Cord blood can only be collected at the time your baby is delivered, afterthe umbilical cord has been clamped and cut. There is no pain or risk toyou or your baby.

Following the collection of your newborns cord blood, the specimen istransported to Cryo-Cells state-of-the-art laboratory facility for testing,processing and storage. The specimen is frozen in the vapors of liquid

nitrogen to extremely cold temperatures of approximately -195C.

This process, known as cryopreservation, halts the cellular activity of thestem cells almost as if they are frozen in time. When cryopreserved inaccordance with industry standards, cord blood stem cells remain vital formany years. Cord blood stem cell specimens harvested from some ofCryo-Cells first clients have been safe and securely cryopreserved fornearly 20 years.

Should the medical need arise the stem cells can be retrieved and thawedin preparation for use in a transplant at a certified medical facility. Collecting your babys cord blood is simple and safe. When your baby is

born, the cord is clamped and cut. Using the supplies provided in the

Cryo-Cell collection kit, your healthcare professional collects the blood

that remains in the umbilical cord and placenta.

Next:

1. You may arrange for the transport of your specimen by simply calling a

Cryo-Cell Transportation Coordinator 24/7/365 at 1-800-STOR-CELL,

option 1.

2. Once your specimen is received in Cryo-Cells laboratory, the cord blood

is tested for microbiological contamination. It is then processed with Hespan,

a plasma volume expander derived from natural sources of starch, to reduce

the red blood cells while concentrating the white blood cells and stem cells.

3. Stem cells are quantified using flow cytometry, a technique for counting

and examining microscopic particles, such as cells and chromosomes, by

suspending them in a stream of fluid and passing them by an electronic

detection device. The stem cells are then mixed with dimethyl sulfoxide

(DMSO) and dextran which are used as cryoprotectants, and stored in a

compartmentalized cryobag.

All bags include a 20 ml and 5 ml sample. Three segments for testing are

overwrapped for additional protection during cryopreservation. The stem

cells, referred to as specimens, are stored in Cryo-Cells highly secured and

monitored cryogenic storage facility.

4. Maternal blood is tested by an outside Clinical Laboratory Improvement

Amendments (CLIA) certified and Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

registered laboratory for hepatitis, HTLV, HIV, CMV and syphilis. If any

of these screening tests are positive, confirmatory tests, if appropriate, are

automatically performed.
