Very Important Band Engagement
C learly this is not the first Band Engagement nor do we suspect it will be the last, however we refer to a particularly important Band Engagement.
You will appreciate that there has been a long growing harmony between the Trombone and Clarinet section of Mullingar Town Band, in the light of which we take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Ger Brady ( Trombone) and Eileen Walsh ( Clarinet) on the announcement of their engagement.
And if that was not enough Eileen has double reason to celebrate having been awarded Band Person of the year.
Altogether a definite reason to ….blow your own trumpet ( or clarinet or trombone!). Congrats to you both.

The Annual General Meeting of Mullingar Town Band will take place on
Tuesday 24th February 2015 from 7.30pm to 8.30pm
I n 2015 the IMBA will host three summer shows and one winterguard competition. We will not be returning to Ballygar this year as
many bands were having difficulty with the
scheduling of the show on the August Bank
Holiday weekend. Dates for the three shows have
been moved to take account of what would have
been a large gap in the summer program. The
first competition will be in Arklow on the 19th
July, two weeks later than normal as part of the
Seabreeze Festival. On Sunday the 23rd August
we return to the Rugby Club in Clonmel after a
very well attended show there in 2014.
At the IMBA AGM in November there were
requests to bring Finals forward out of the school
year, so we will wrap up one week earlier than
normal on the 5th September in Dublin. January
will see the IMBA Council and all the band
colourguards busy in preparation for
Winterguard on Valentine’s Day in the Basketball
Arena.
Finally the council of the IMBA want to
congratulate Celtic Crusaders for their
performance at IMBA finals. In a very
entertaining show, the band achieved their
highest score (56.85) since we joined the DCE
judging system and achieved 3rd place at IMBA
Finals.
The confirmed dates for 2015 are:
Sat 14th Feb – Winterguard, Basketball Arena,
Tallaght
Sun 19th July - Arklow, Co.Wicklow
Sun 23rd Aug - Clonmel, Co.Tipperary
Sat 5th Sept – IMBA Finals, Dublin

W hat is it about Bingo in the
Bandhall of a Wednesday
night that is so appealing?
Well, if you come early enough you are
likely to hear the dulcet tones of our
Chairman Martin Nally on the piano,
chat with chief checker Jane and take
time to carefully choose Mullingar
Town Band Lotto numbers.
For those that are regulars you will
find your Lotto envelope pre-prepared,
name, numbers, all written out at the
desk courtesy of Seán. What more
could you ask for? If your tummy
rumbles there’s a variety of tasty treats
available from budding entrepreneur
Aaron Moore’s tuck shop. If that isn’t
enough to sway you, there’s the
pleasure of catching up with friends
and escaping the hum drum reality of
the daily grind ...just for a few hours.
So the buses have descended,
punters anxiously purchasing booklets
hoping to be the lucky one. Silence
descends, all banter abruptly stopped;
heads crouched down earnestly,
highlighters at the ready. Yes, you’ve
guessed it, the real fun has begun. The
ever patient caller is revealing the
much coveted numbers.
So from callers to checkers,
cashiers and counters, there’s more to
the average night of Bingo than meets
the eye. The volunteers who are the
foundation of the Town Band
generously give their time every week
to make this happen. They do it with
unfailing good spirits no matter how
cold and dark a winters night it may be.
It is this good will that provides
the community with an outlet to
socialise, be entertained and let’s not
forget, gamble! And when all is said
and done, there’s always the hope of
winning the ever elusive Jackpot...
Bingo - Your best bet for a good night out. By Orla O’Dea

T he date was set back in early
September for our Midterm break
Fundraiser “Shake Rattle and Bowl”.
We endeavoured to sell 70 lanes of bowling at
€50.00 per lane for our night on the 24th of
October. Rock N Bowl kindly loaned us their
full facility and we completely took over both
bowling lanes and Jungle Joes play area from
5.30pm till late. Families’ friends and
members of the band were encouraged to go
out and sell as many lanes as possible in order
to make this fundraising event as successful as
possible, and they did not disappoint us.
Slowly at first our time slot poster began
to fill up and by the 22nd of October we had
accumulated a total of 55 lanes sold out of 70.
Excitement was building among members and
so were their competitive streaks! We had
arranged trophies for winning team, runners
up, highest individual score adult, highest
individual score child and worst player. Who
would be triumphant on the night and who
would be awarded the not so coveted worst
score trophy only time would tell!
Caroline Egan and myself walked the
town, cap in hand, approaching businesses for
spot prizes for our raffle. Everywhere we went
we got positive feed back on how much loved
the Band was by the people of Mullingar and
they were only too glad to help us by donating
a spot prize. A list of those generous
businesses is at the end of this article. Once all
preparations were made and the prizes
gathered, we waited for the fun to begin.
The event began at 5.30pm and Martin
really got into the swing of things by
festooning Rock N Bowl with inflatable
instruments, balloons and banners. Amy
Garvey kindly made us our welcome sign and
also volunteered to do face painting on the
night. Aaron set up the decks and laid on
some tunes to get us in the party mood. We
had great support on the night with plenty of
helpers setting up prizes, selling tickets and
checking younger children in to Jungle Joes.
The lanes quickly filled up and the band
members really let their hair down! The sound
of laughter and high spirits coming from every
direction.
Frank took on the task of checking
scores and keeping an eye on those really
competitive teams. The night went very
quickly and soon it was time to see who would
get to take home a spot prize. We had some
great prizes on offer from beauty hampers,
aftershave, clothes, goodies, to a ton of
vouchers and we had some very happy
people at the end. Once the raffle was over we
gathered the players together to announce the
winners and the losers!
The wining team was Frank Kiernan’s
Team and they accepted their trophy
triumphantly! We awarded out our other
trophies and all the younger children got a
special medal for their efforts so every one
was happy, well not everyone was happy …
our worst adult player wasn’t as eager to
accept her award as the other recipients! But
keep practicing there’s always next year Rita!
All in all our night was a great success,
well supported and enjoyed by all accounts. I
would like to thank Rock N Bowl for all their
help and support on the night and also to all
those who purchased a lane, donated a spot
prize or turned up and helped out on the
night. We raised an impressive €2150.00 on
the night. Thanks to each and every one of
you! Thank you to the following Businesses for
their kind donations:
