The greatest benefit of a cruise is that it allows you to discover new lands while experiencing all inclusive service onboard magnificent vessels. It is no coincidence that more than 13 million people choose to cruise each year around the world and according to CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association), the majority of travellers rate cruising as the number one vacation choice when it comes to value and fulfillment of their needs.

There has been an explosion of new vessels navigating the seas and 2010 is a record year with 15 new ships that will be launched, including the world’s biggest, the Allure of the Seas by Royal Caribbean Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Lines’ The Epic. And Oceania is getting ready to launch the much anticipated Marina, a luxurious vessel that will include a culinary theatre and the first Jacques Pépin Restaurant at sea. With so much choice the process of finding the right cruise might be overwhelming. So whether you are trying cruising for the first time or a seasoned navigator seeking a new experience, we have put together a summary of the cruise categories to help you navigate your way to your perfect cruise vacation.

PremiumA Premium Cruise has all the features of a Contemporary Cruise but add to it - a more refined level of service and amenities, a higher staff to passenger ratio and some unique onboard activities that enhance the overall cruising experience such as culinary theatres, learning programs and Specialty classes. In general, Premium cruises are targeted for baby boomers who seek more unique experiences while travelling such as fine wines and gourmet dining, luxurious spas, art and upscale surroundings but all in a more intimate setting.

Premium Cruises distinguish themselves from Contemporary Cruises through enriched amenities and services . Included in this category are River Cruises that bring clients to many of the famous rivers around the world and offer a unique way of enjoying a leisurely vacation and discovering many European and Asian cities and countrysides while experiencing the pampering of a cruise vacation.

Family-Friendly Cruise VacationsFamily Cruising has become increasingly more popular, mainly due to the fact that many of the top cruise lines now offer cruising styles that fit the needs of parents travelling with children. From toddlers to teens and every child in between, cruise lines have designed special programs that cater to children depending on their age group. We’ve researched the world of cruising to find out – who’s got the best when it comes to the kids?

It goes without saying that when you think of ‘family cruising’, Disney® comes to mind. The Disney ships were created specifically for families to enjoy some of the same incredible experiences on the sea that you do on land at any of the Disney® Resorts. The fun begins the minute you step on board and are greeted by ‘Mickey & Minnie’ or ‘Donald & Pluto’. As the ships set sail the party starts off with the ‘Sail Away Celebration’ - truly a one of kind welcome featuring members of the crew and some all-time favorite Disney® characters. Later on at night the fun continues with the famous ‘Pirates IN the Caribbean’ show. This one of a kind show starts during the ‘Pirate’ dinner in one of the main dining restaurants and ends with a spectacular fireworks show. But this is just the first of many – there’s a different shows every night to enjoy at the theatre!

Disney cruises are the best choice for families with kids of all ages as they offer an assortment of programs and amenities from infants right up to teenagers with then provides parents with the choice to either enjoy an interactive holiday with their kids or a carefree holiday away from the kids knowing they are being well taken care

of and fully entertained by the Disney® cruise staff. For the littlest ones, ‘It’s a Small World Nursery’ staffed with Disney® counselors that provide activities and even nap times for those between 3 months and 3 years old. The ‘Oceandeer Club and Labs’ for 4 to 12 years features all sorts of activities such as games, dress up and play acting, movies, storytelling and best of all - loveable Disney® characters join in and play along. And tweens and teens can play and party all day and night with programs designed just for them.

Royal Caribbean also offers cruises that are all about families including two fun filled programs - the ‘Fisher-Price® Aqua Babies and Aqua Tots’ program and the’ Adventure Ocean’ for kids 3 – 17 years old. There are five clubs that provide fun, games, activities and entertainment throughout the voyage. The ‘Fisher Price® Aqua Babies and Aqua Tots programs were developed exclusively for Royal Caribbean Cruises and include age appropriate activities to engage and entertain this age group. Ask any parent who has sailed with their kids on Royal Caribbean and they will tell you that the most challenging part of the voyage was pulling their kids away from the ‘Adventure Ocean’. There are activities going on all day whether at sea or on the private islands and kids collect Adventure Ocean credits for participating in the events. Credits can be redeemed for cool merchandise at the end of the voyage. Royal Caribbean is set to enhance its’ kids program even more when it launches the ‘Dreamworks Experience’ in December 2010. A full program of activities will feature characters from Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and more.

Other cruise lines such as Norwegian Cruise Lines, Holland America and even Paul Gauguin have programs geared for kids. With so many programs for kids of all ages, cruising is definitely a vacation for the whole family to enjoy.
