PARK RULES AND REGULATIONSSafety and enjoyment go hand in hand atCrowder District Park. The following rules and regulations have been established to ensure a safe and pleasant visit.

PICNIC OPPORTUNITIES

There are three covered shelters and several other areas located throughout the park. Each of the covered shelters has a charcoal grill with restroom facilities and playgrounds nearby. Shelters are available from 9 a.m. until one hour before park closing time. Shelter reservations can be made online at wakegov.com/parks/crowder. Unreserved shelters may be used free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis. Users are required to leave the shelter and surrounding areas clean and undamaged. Please follow rules posted on each shelter.

EDUCATIONAL GARDENS

There are several display gardens for the enjoyment of all park visitors. The gardens are maintained largely by volunteers. The gardens provide suggestions for native plantings and backyard wildlife habitats.

Butterfly/Hummingbird GardenLocated next to the park office, this garden includes native plants to attract butterflies in both the adult and larval stage. As an added benefit, the hummingbirds like it as well.

Bird GardenNative trees, shrubs and vines provide food and shelter for the many birds that visit this garden on the outer loop near the office. Bird feeders allow visitors to view songbirds up close.

Prairie GardenThe prairie garden is made up of common grass, wildflowers and shrubs found in North Carolina prairies. The garden is located near the open play field by the paved trail. An artistic display shows visitors what the prairie landscape may have looked like years ago.

Shade GardenThe shade garden is behind the Heron Shelter and features a vine-covered arbor and a variety of shade-loving plants such as ferns and mosses.

The park’s 33 acres provide outdoor recreational opportunities that include over one mile of paved trails, a natural surface trail, an open play field, sand volleyball, outdoor amphitheater and three picnic shelters with adjacent playgrounds. The

boardwalk across the park’s 2.7-acre pond is always a favorite stop while at Crowder.

A visit to Crowder Park offers a chance to relax in a natural setting that offers passive recreation and educational opportunities.

Park naturalists offer interpretive, hands-on environmental programs for all

ages throughout the year.

HISTORY

In 1992, Mrs. Doris Crowder donated 33 acres of land to Wake County, with the stipulation that the land be used as a public park. With two million dollars from the 1993 parks bond referendum, planners were able to transform this heavily wooded tract of land into a fully operational park. Crowder District Park opened to the public in June of 1998 after a two-year recovery from damage caused by Hurricane Fran.

Walking TrailsTake a relaxing stroll along trails that wind through wooded areas of the park and circle Crowder’s 2.7-acre pond. The outer perimeter paved trail is 0.8 miles in length while the paved loop trail around the pond is 0.3 miles. The park also features a 0.2-mile unpaved nature trail with tree identification signs.

Park FacilitiesThe park features structures nestled in a natural setting that provide locations for a variety of recreational and educational opportunities. Restrooms are located in the two park pavilions. The upper pavilion is a great place to relax and look for wildlife, as is the amphitheater, pond overlook deck and boardwalk.

PlaygroundsThere are three playgrounds at Crowder. The largest is located near the upper pavilion and has play equipment for preschool and grade school age children. The other two playgrounds are located near the Heron and Robin picnic shelters and are designed for preschool age children. All of the playgrounds are located near parking.

Open Play FieldThe open play area is located in the lower section of the

park. This area includes a baseball backstop, sand volleyball court, open play space and a bench to rest

along the area’s perimeter. It is open to all and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

ProgramsPark staff offer a variety of educational programs that

accommodate diverse age groups, interests and curriculum. Children and family programs are available. Packaged

discovery box activities may be checked out that provide mini lessons to groups or individuals on a variety of topics.

EventsFree family-oriented events are offered at the park each year,

including the largest event, Frog Fest! Events feature educational displays, crafts, fun games, community vendors,

tasty food and more. All events are listed on the park website, social media and the monthly e-newsletter.
