This document is Volume 8C of the Transport Assessment Report and deals with the western route section. This includes both the western Crossrail branch on the Great Western Main Line, which extends from Maidenhead to Portobello Junction, and the Heathrow Crossrail branch.

This volume should be read in conjunction with Volume 8A which includes the following:

    • Scope and methodology for the Transport Assessment • Baseline • Scheme-wide impacts and mitigation measures • Principal findings and conclusions • Mapping sources • Glossary and list of abbreviations. The western route section has been subdivided into 30 route windows; 25 on the western branch (W25 to W1) and five route windows on the Heathrow branch (H1 to H5). This Volume assesses each route window separately by Chapter, except for those on the Heathrow branch, which are dealt within a single chapter. The final chapter provides a summary of the cumulative impacts, principal findings and conclusions for this route section.

The Crossrail service will use only the existing Great Western relief lines (in normal operations). Additional new track will however, be provided at some locations. For example, a new line will be constructed over about 1 km between Langley and West Drayton, which will link existing (but upgraded) freight lines to its east and west so providing increased track capacity.

Crossrail’s major new structures or facilities include a new diveunder (rail underpass) at Acton (W4), a new flyover at Stockley in Hillingdon (W11) and new or remodelled sidings at Maidenhead (W25), West Drayton (W13) and Old Oak Common depot (W3). During

construction the site at Old Oak Common Depot will be used for the storage and transfer of materials into the central section for the fit out of Crossrail’s underground tunnels.

Crossrail will require at several places, changes to the permanent way, such as new track or track realignment. It will also require new or extended station platforms to accommodate Crossrail’s 200 m long trains at all 13 stations. At nine stations, improved facilities, including new or modified ticket halls, will be provided to accommodate the increased number of passengers from Crossrail.

Much of the Great Western Main Line is not electrified; only the section between Paddington and the Stockley Road bridge in Hillingdon is electrified at present. The remainder of the route west of Stockley Road bridge will require the provision of new overhead line equipment (OHLE). This in turn will require that some of the bridges on the route be raised or the track lowered beneath them. In some cases, bridges will be reconstructed completely. In other cases, bridge works will be more limited; for example, raising of parapets (side walls) for public safety reasons.

In some instances the works on these bridges will require temporary road closures and diversions. In all cases diversions and closures have been kept to a minimum in terms of both duration and diversion length in order that any disruption be kept to a minimum. The programming of bridge works will be devised so that works will not take place concurrently at adjacent bridges.

Remodelling of the track layout on the approach to Paddington station will be undertaken during the construction period. A full blockade of services into Paddington will be required for an estimated two week period with partial blockades for a week before and afterwards. Otherwise, disruption to passengers at stations will be minimised throughout construction period.

No works are required in association with the Heathrow route, as Crossrail trains will utilise existing and future infrastructure.

Permanent Permanent transport impacts of Crossrail once operational are identified in western route windows. These include effects on road traffic, pedestrians as well as on rail passengers. Various general and specific mitigation measures are recommended as appropriate. These impacts are generally at and around stations, but not exclusively in that there are some impacts at rebuilt bridges and sidings. Generally, Crossrail passengers will benefit from journey time savings, a removal of the need to interchange and improved accessibility for mobility impaired passengers at many stations.
