“To love at all is to be
vulnerable. Love anything and
your heart will be wrung and
possibly broken. If you want to
make sure of keeping it intact
you must give it to no one, not
even an animal. Wrap it
carefully round with hobbies
and little luxuries; avoid all en-
tanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin
of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark,
motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be
broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable,
irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”
These beautiful words came from the pen, heart,
and mind of C.S. Lewis and how true they are.
Living in this day and age of the Internet, Social
Media, and 24-hour News, we are much more
aware of the rampant violence in our country and
around the world than we were in our younger
days. Thus, whether consciously or unconsciously
in an act of self-preservation, we are more weary
and suspicious of others that we do not know or
perhaps look like us. And it’s truly a shame that in
many cases that is our default position. So what
happens when we slide into this mode? Our
hearts become unbreakable. We forget how to
empathize. We forget how to care.
Let’s be honest, we’ve all been there at times. I
have. We shut others out, looked the other way,
pretended we didn’t hear someone in need, or
just didn’t want to give the time needed to hear
someone’s heart…someone’s story.
Obviously, this goes contrary to the teaching of
Jesus who taught us to “…love thy neighbor as
thyself.” So my prayer, as we return from vaca-
tions and begin the Fall-Kickoff, is that we “take a
chance” on someone. Reach out to someone who
is in need and help them. Go outside and talk to
your neighbors. Invite the neighbors you don’t
know over for dinner and get to know them. Take
a walk downtown and speak to others. Get in-
volved in a community project that will help the
poor. Pray with someone. Tell others about Christ
and how He has changed your life.
And let me tell you what will happen if you make
this a habit. God will bless you. Your heart will
grow, and you will begin to think of yourself less
and others more. You’ll start to act more like
Jesus and that is what the world desperately
needs more of.
Blessings, Pastor Greg

Dot Lambeth and her 90th birthday were celebrated many times and in many ways. (She was even featured on Fox 8 TV!) But her Monticello UCC church family was honored to join her family & other friends who gathered early on her August 8th
birthday morn to celebrate her during worship service. The Men’s Chorus sang her favorite, “How Great Thou Art” , Pastor Greg praised her and prayed thanks for her
and her many good works at church and in the community, and everyone sang a rousing “Happy Birth-day” too. After worship service, Women’s Fellowship hosted a luncheon that featured an enormous spread of delicious meats, veggies, fruits and desserts (birthday cake too!) and more opportunities for all to celebrate our amazing friend Dot and her milestone birthday!

pal Hunter Smothers and teachers greatly appreciated the generous expression of appreciation and support.
Thank you . . . Clyda & David Johnson for hosting the first session in our new group Bible Study, “Slaying the Giants in Your Life” by Dr. David Jeremiah. Every-one is invited to join in this study that meets once a month, day and time determined by volunteer host.
Jimmy Sloan . . . Had a PET scan in August that revealed the best news: no sign of cancer! Praise the Lord!
Jimmy & Mickey and family thank everyone for your faithful prayers!
Thank you to: . . . Everyone who attended the AUGUST MUNCH! And, of course, to our hosts Pastor Greg and Nancy Bouck, Jackie and Steve Wagner, Sharon Hall, Lyndi and Greg Forehand. The spaghetti dinner featured three amazing choices of sauces: alfredo (Nancy Bouck) marinara ( Lyndi Forehand) and meat (Steve Wagner)—so delicious some people tried all three. (No names will be men-tioned!) Crisp salad fixings included home and local grown tomatoes, cucumbers, and more and there was also hot bread. Dessert choices included key lime pie, various cakes, cup cakes and more! What a fun night and a total of $805.00 was raised for the Building Fund!
Thank you to . . Everyone who donated school supplies for South End Elementary School and to Laura Smith, Patsy Smith, Jerry and Ginger Smothers and Pastor Greg for delivering an array of delicious foods to the staff there on August 19..School Princi-
