Our own Sarah Nutter returned to Columbiana County with four medals from the Special Olympics USA Games

held in New Jersey June 15 – 21. Sarah earned four medals in swimming at the Princeton

University Campus Swimming Pool. Sarah won the gold in the 50-yard freestyle and 25-yard butterfly, silver in the

50-yard breast stroke and bronze in the 4x25-yard medley relay. A total of 3500 Olympians from 50

states competed in 16 sports. The theme for the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games was,

“ONE AMBITION TO INSPIRE THE WORLD”.

CONGRATULATIONS and GOOD JOB SARAH !

Threshold would like to congratulate James Gordon, who competed in this year’s Special Olympics State Summer

Games held in Columbus, Ohio. James is a two time gold medal winner, competing in the shot put and 100 meter run.

James is currently employed at Threshold ODO

working with the lawn crew and at the detail shop. James is also president of the ODO client council that meets monthly to discuss his peers questions and concerns, in which he is

an effective advocate.

All of us at Threshold and ODO workshop wish James continued success in his athletic endeavors.

CONGRATULATIONS! WELL DONE JAMES.

Ed Davis and Tom Helton enjoyed a visit to the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame recently. They really loved seeing all the guitars and memorabilia from many of their favorite stars. The two guys joined their residential manager for a McCarter Coach and Tour day trip to Cleveland. All three had never been to the museum and all three had their must see displays. Ed’s was Elvis, Tom’s was Black Sabbath and Mary’s was Janis Joplin’s car! After lunch at the Hard Rock Café and more guitars on display, they stopped at the Western Reserve Historical Society where they saw lots of old cars and motorcycles. It was a great day of music, cars and friends.

“Marvelous Marvin”, as he was referred to on the ski slopes during his years in Special Olympics, was a man who left an impression.

Marvin came to Threshold in March of 1983 at the age of 36, from a life in institutions. Though Marvin was not verbal he made himself heard and touched the lives of the people he knew. When Marvin came to Threshold he

became a part of our family and both were blessed for the time shared together.

Jessica Keeder won a first place ribbon in the adult bookmark

category at the County Fair. Congratulations Jessica!

Who you gonna

call ??? Yes Sarah Reed, currently Threshold’s Program Director, comes to the rescue time and time again for both Threshold staff and residents alike. Sarah has become our “go to” person any time we are looking for answers to questions or solutions to problems. Sarah Reed had worked as a Team Leader for Threshold and left for a while only to return and take on the position of Program Director of our Threshold ODO Workshop. Sarah did this job well and the residents love her, but there was even more in store for her. In 2013, Sarah moved to the Threshold office and became Program Director, exercising and sharing her knowledge and expertise in the Developmental Disability field. Once again she excels and delights all those she engages.

Sarah also has a very good sense of humor and a very positive “glass full” attitude. You can’t help but smile and feel a little better after being around her, no matter what kind of day you may be having. We love and appreciate Sarah and all the good work she does at Threshold and feel fortunate to have her to rely on and to call her friend. Threshold is a better place for having Sarah as a part of our Threshold family. Thank you Sarah!

VACATIONS ...

...and OUTINGS

The ladies at home 3 began their journey to Geneva for 5 days on

June 2nd with a full van and a Partridge Family CD playing in the back-

ground. Anxious to get there, everyone was pleasantly surprised by the

accommodations, each lady had their own bedroom! The first night was

spent settling in, setup in the house and checking out the local area for the

adventures that lay ahead. They discovered, they were within walking dis-

tance of several little stores and food stands and only a few minutes from

the arcade and go karts.

Time was spent on the beach where the ladies searched for rocks

and enjoyed putting their feet in the water. Staff and Doris played in the

sand to see who could first fill the pail with sand using only their feet... and

Doris won!

The trip to the arcade was fun and it was discovered that Judy was

a pretty good driver as long as staff operated the peddles. Doris enjoyed

hitting everything along the side of road - missing the road

completely. Also, during this time of discovery, Angie was found to be a

great basketball player!

It was on to shopping, and what girl doesn’t like to shop?! The ladies set their sights on shopping and finding the best buys and this is where Jeannie excelled, finding several treasures. Diana was our daredevil, enjoying the speed of the go karts as she whipped around the track passing all the others. Everyone had a great time and can’t wait till next year to do it all over again !!!

On July 30th, ODO enjoyed a guided tour of Beaver Creek Wild Life Education Center where we viewed several rooms set-up with wildlife themed natural animal settings. Following the tour, we stopped at Beaver Creek Park for a picnic and nature walk. Every month everyone also enjoys the trips to our local coffee house, The Coffee Stop, in

East Palestine. ODO hopes that the good weather continues into the Fall so we can continue these special outings.

Threshold ODO clients have been enjoying a mild cool summer filled with fun, educational and exciting activities. During the ODO monthly client council meeting, consumers vote on several field trips for the upcoming month. The ODO and Detail Shop staff do a great job of putting together a monthly activity calendar filled with several stimulating outing opportunities. This summer we have visited Angels for Animals, picnicked at East Palestine Park, swam at the pool and nature walked around the pond. We have also visited Brady Run Park for lunch and nature walks. We have also visited Scenic Vista Park for walks along the stream, Roger’s Flea Market and Leetonia Coke Ovens.
