ST JACOBI LUTHERAN CHURCH IS PLEASED TO AWARDA $750.00 SCHOLARSHIP TO:MARIELLEN MCCULLOUGH.

Mariellen is a confirmed member of St Jacobi.. She is attending SullivanCounty Community College studying for a culinary career.

Here is her essay on what God means to her. There are so many ways that God has affected my life. God gave me a family that

loves me for who I am. A family that helps me no matter what I do. That doesn’t judge mefor the worst. When I was born I had something called NF1, it required me to get MRI’s andtest done every years. I’m very thankful to have God protecting me throughout my life withNF1. God gave me a Mother and Father who cares so much about me. They would drive1,000 miles if I were in trouble or hurt. God gave me a little brother that I care so muchabout even though we fight all the time. I can make a bet that he cares about me too. I lovehim from the bottom of my heart. If anything ever happed to him I don’t know what I woulddo with out him. He’s my little brother. If anyone tried to hurt him in any way, I’d be thereto say something. I thank God for giving me friends that love me. God has given me friendsthat care about me and would do anything for me. Friends that are hard to find, ones thatdon’t judge on appearance, clothing or money but what really counts, God gave me theability to love, care, trust and believe God gave me the ability to believe in my self and any-thing I put my mind to. I thank God everyday for my family, for protecting me, for the bestlittle brother and for great friends.

Thank you for the chance for this scholarship, it will help a lot with gas, books andsuch things like that.Thank you,Mariellen McCullough

Pillars of the faith

Because Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses, or thoughts, to a church door in Wittenberg, Germany, on

October 31, 1517, many Christians remember that day and the major changes, or Reformation, that resulted.

Luther's theses contained three main pillars, which have stood for almost 500 years:

1. Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone) ‐ The Bible is the sole authority in matters of faith, life and conduct.

"All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in

righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16, NRSV).

2. Sola Fide (Faith Alone) ‐ Christians are justified, or declared righteous, only through believing in Jesus Christ

as Savior. Although morality and good works are important, they alone cannot lead to salvation. "A person is

justified not by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ" (Galatians 2:16, NRSV).

3. Sola Gratia (Grace Alone) ‐ Grace is God's unmerited, or undeserved, favor. Salvation is a free gift from

our gracious God. "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the

gift of God ‐ not the result of works, so that no one may boast" (Ephesians 2:8‐9, NRSV).
