MILO/BROWNVILLE - At the Wednesday, April 1st morning meeting, Three Rivers Kiwanis|Milo-Brownville (TRK) attendees were enthralled by a slideshow presentation by Nancy and Tom Harrigan detailing their recent trip to New Zealand and Australia. Several members and guests enjoyed profession-al-quality photographs and several fascinating and humorous anecdotes of their trip with Road Scholars, formerly Elder Hostel. The Kiwanis building offers presenters a 60-inch screen, wall-mounted television screen allowing easy viewing from around the room.

“We’ve traveled on a number of trips with Road Scholar, who gave us all a comprehensive printed book with detailed day-by-day descriptions, a suggested reading list, and a list of the lecturers and their bios,” said Nancy. Tom reported their tour included eight fl ights and 3000 mile in their own car on a trip to and from Florida before and after disembarking for Down Under. Tom reported, “We arrived in Auck-

land four days before starting the tour to get over jetlag and get ready for our tour. We do that on all our long-distance trips.” A high point was the cultural show of the New Zealand Maoris, say-ing it was the best cultural per-formance they have ever seen. The list of locations they visited included: Rotorua, then on to Christchurch, which was devas-tated by an earthquake in fall of 2010 then another one in Febru-ary of 2011. Akaroa was next, a beautiful town with a beautiful harbor. They visited the Inter-national Antarctic Centre where centre staff put visitors into warm jackets with hoods, and put

them all in a room and dropped the temperature and gave them a blast of cold wind – all to simu-late being in Antarctica. “Like being in Maine in January,” said Nancy. The next fl ight was to the southernmost city in NZ and on to Milford Sound, which is on the west coast of the South Island and offers spectacular natural features. They next traveled to Queenstown and Wellington on

the southern tip of the North Is-land. The tour group took a fl ight to Melbourne Australia. Next on the agenda was Sydney, with its world-famous bridge and the amazing opera house. Nancy told us the opera house was originally budgeted to cost $7M, but ended up costing $107M, entirely from donations. The tour headed lastly to Cairns on the northeast coast to see the Great Barrier Reef.

GARLAND - It’s Spring, which means it is time for Garland Grange’s Annual Public Supper Season. For well over a decade, Garland Grange has been provid-ing monthly public suppers as a major fund-raising effort.

The public meals have grown the organization’s treasury to al-low for minor improvements to the building over the years.

“We really appreciate the com-munity’s support of Garland Grange,” says Garland Grange Master and Chef Bill Bemis. “ We have developed quite a following for our suppers.”

Public supper season starts at Garland GrangeOver the past few years loyal

supper patrons have come to ex-pect Bill’s famous Baked Beans and Macaroni and Cheese as well as the homemade bread and des-serts. However, as the treasury was building, some community members asked about what the money was being used for.

“I am the fi rst one they see when they come into supper,” says Secretary Andrea Rollins, “so I am often asked what their money is being used towards.”

Rollins is happy to be able to have a great answer for them this year. The fall of 2014 saw Garland Grange undertaking two major capital projects on the historic hall.

First, was the drilling of a new well. For many years (no one is certain as to when), Garland Grange has been getting wa-ter from the next door Garland Community Baptist Church. When the water line froze under the parking lot between the two buildings in the spring of 2014 causing delay of the Grange’s 2014 public supper season, the need for an independent water source was brought to the fore-front. The fall of 2014 a new well was dug and pump installed.

Second, the major project was the installation of a new heating system. For a couple years now, the oil furnace at the hall was giving the organization more problems than heat. The need for a newer, more energy effi -cient system was obvious. So in January of 2015, an oil furnace and new duct work was installed. The furnace was of no cost to the Grange, thanks to Treasurer and local business owner Ernest Rol-lins. Rollins spoke with a neigh-bor who works for Bangor Natu-ral Gas. Thanks to the movement in Bangor to switch to natural gas, there was an oil furnace available free for the taking. All it took was 3 Grange members and a family member a Sunday afternoon to disassemble and re-move the furnace from the base-ment of an apartment house on Forest Avenue in Bangor. How-ever, the cost came when hiring a licensed heating contractor to re-assemble the “Humpty Dumpty” furnace. While he was there, he suggested some rearranging of the heating duct work at the hall

to improve the effi ciency of heat-ing the large, old building.

The new heating system and well will allow the building bet-ter year-round use. “Right now, we shy away from much going on in the winter time at the build-ing. Our hope is to allow rent of the building for weddings and parties as well as other events such as game days,” says Bemis.

The fi rst public supper will be held on Friday, April 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. The menu will include Baked Beans, Macaroni and Cheese, homemade bread and desserts. As always the meal is all you can eat for $7 for adults. $3 for children, under age 5 FREE.

Garland Grange thanks the loyal patrons for their continued support, and invites the public to come check out the upgrades at the hall.

Another exciting addition to the public supper schedule is the conjunction of a Family Contra Dance following each supper. This tradition was started last year and the great collaboration has continued. The fi rst contra dance will be held on the same night of the supper starting at 7 p.m. This a great family friendly event with live music. All dances are taught, so anyone can do it. Admission to the dance is $7 per person and $12 per family. The caller is John McIntire and the music is provided by Some Reel People.

In addition, as Community Service Committee chair, An-drea Rollins wants to thank all the supper patrons for using the suppers as opportunities to bring in all the items collected by the Grange. These include Campbell Soup Labels, Box Tops for Educa-tion, Soda Can tabs, pennies for House in the Woods, used post-age stamps, and Coupons for the Troops. Rollins encourages everyone to keep bringing these items in.

Garland Grange meets ev-ery fi rst and third Friday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the hall which is located on Oliver Hill Road in Garland. For more in-formation about Garland Grange call Bill Bemis at 924-4123 or check Garland Grange #76 on Facebook.

DOVER-FOXCROFT - The Center Theatre is gearing up for open-ing night of their new children’s production of the Jungle Book on April 10 at 7 p.m. The production, written by Vera Morris and di-rected by Bobby Keniston, is presented by special arrangement with Pioneer Drama Service. The play, based on the beloved stories of Ru-dyard Kipling, follows the story of Mowgli the boy raised in the jungle and his struggle against the tiger Shere Kahn. The all children’s cast brings the jungle to life with a large cast of colorful jungle characters.

Keniston says that directing the play has been very rewarding, “The kids have been working hard on the production and we’re all excited to show off our work to the community.” According to Kenis-ton, participation in a play is much more than just memorizing lines and reciting them. “Being in a play is a great opportunity for the kids to learn about being part of a team. The kids have to learn to focus and listen to each other as they’re acting, they learn they can do something wonderful by working together.”

Keniston says the play is very entertaining for the whole family and he hopes the kids have good audiences for each performance. The cast will also be performing for area schools during the day on April 15. The production at the Center Theatre opens on Friday the 10th at 7 p.m. and continues Saturday the 11th at 7 p.m., Sunday the 12th at 1 p.m. and the next weekend on Friday the 17th at 7 p.m. and Saturday the 18th at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Admission for the show is $12 for the general public, $10 in advance and for Seniors, students, and members. There is also a special $5 rate for kids 12 and under.

For tickets and more information please call the Center Theatre at 564-8943 or stop by the Theatre at 20 East Main Street, Dover-Fox-croft between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

PISCATAQUIS - Poor health impacts not only the lives of individu-als but the vitality of the communities in which they live. According to the 2015 Robert Wood Johnson County Health Rankings released in March, Piscataquis ranked second to last of Maine’s 16 counties for poor health. In particular, Piscataquis shows an alarming rate of chronic disease, the highest incidence of most forms of cancer, and Maine’s highest premature death rate.

“Feel Good Piscataquis!” is a county-wide community-centered initiative to help people in Piscataquis live healthier lives. The ef-fort grew out of two separate health grants awarded to Piscataquis County by the Maine Health Access Foundation (MeHAF) under its Achieving Better Health in Communities initiative. The “Feel Good Piscataquis!” name signifi es that the TIP and Healthy Community are working closely together – and that in the big picture, being healthy is about feeling well.

The Thriving in Place (TIP) grant, facilitated by the Charlotte White Center, is helping medically vulnerable adults avoid unneces-sary hospitalization and other forms of institutional care. Specifi -cally, TIP is working to increase capacity in four core areas to help older people and adults with serious health problems stay well at home: volunteerism; health-related transportation; home-based ser-vices and supports; and caregiver support.

The Healthy Community grant, being led by the Piscataquis Re-gional YMCA (PRYMCA), aims to improve the overall health of resi-dents in Piscataquis County by helping people get better access to fresh, healthy foods. According to the USDA, nearly 3000 individu-als in Piscataquis County, including 700 children, are “food insecure.” Seniors and children, in particular, are at high risk for physical and mental health problems and diseases due to lack of adequate daily nutrition. They also have a harder time learning, working, and con-tributing to their communities.

Both TIP and Healthy Community are looking at how resources and services that already exist in Piscataquis can be used more effectively to help people achieve better health. More than 30 organizations and individuals have become partners in the “Feel Good Piscataquis!” ef-fort. Together they are already fi nding and implementing solutions that are “small enough to do and big enough to matter” to people’s health. TIP project coordinator Meg Callaway and Healthy Commu-nity coordinator Erin Callaway hope that the coalition will continue to grow. In particular, they invite people who have trouble getting access to healthy food or living well at home to join the conversation.

There are many ways to get involved. To learn more about TIP, con-tact Meg Callaway at (207) 270-2778 or [email protected]. For the Healthy Community initiative contact Erin Callaway at (207) 343-0171 or [email protected]. “Feel Good Pistcataquis!” will also be present at regional events and venues throughout the year including the Dover-Cove Farmer’s Market and The Whoopie Pie Festival.

PENQUIS AREA - Maine Audubon, Trout Unlimited and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) are seeking volunteer anglers to survey remote Maine ponds and coastal streams for brook trout this fi shing season. Information gathered by volunteers will be used to identify populations of previously-undocumented wild brook trout across the state.

Wild brook trout have signifi -cantly declined throughout their range. Maine is home to 97% of the intact wild brook trout lake and pond habitat in the east-ern United States. Brook trout require clean, cold water and well-connected streams to sur-vive. The population status of

brook trout is a key indicator of a healthy ecosystem that also illustrates the health of other species, including moose, deer, otters, kingfi shers, herons and osprey. A decline in brook trout populations serves as an early warning that an entire ecosys-tem is potentially at risk.

The quality and abundance of some of Maine’s brook trout have declined in recent years due to development, land use practices, the introduction of non-native competing species and climate change. Wild brook trout are a nationally signifi cant resource and Maine has a special respon-sibility to protect the last strong-hold population of these iconic fi sh and its valuable habitat.

Maine is home to hundreds of remote ponds that have never been surveyed by fi sheries bi-ologists nor have any record of past stocking. “Identifying the ponds and coastal streams with wild brook trout will greatly as-sist MDIFW in planning our conservation and management strategies over the next several decades,” noted Merry Gallagh-er, MDIFW Fisheries Research Biologist. The project’s focus on both remote ponds and coastal streams offers anglers a chance to explore new areas of the state. “Volunteers should be enthu-siastic about fi shing for brook trout, be comfortable in remote settings and have a sense of ad-venture,” noted Jeff Reardon of

Trout Unlimited.2015 marks the fi fth year of

the Brook Trout Survey Project. To date, 252 active volunteers have successfully surveyed 288 remote Maine ponds. Of those waters, 127 ponds were recom-mended to MDIFW for a formal survey after brook trout were caught or observed. Based on the fact that these ponds had never been formally surveyed by MDIFW and there are no records of any past stocking, these trout are likely previously unknown populations of native or wild brook trout.

Based on the success of the Pond Survey, the project expand-ed in 2014 to include coastal stream surveys. Project partners hope that this year will bring a signifi cant increase in the num-ber of streams surveyed and new volunteer anglers. Brook trout that live in coastal streams may spend part of their lives in salt-water and come back to freshwa-ter to spawn.

There is little is known about the distribution and life history of sea-run brook trout in Maine, so volunteers are needed to help identify watersheds contain-ing this special and elusive fi sh.

“The success of this project is entirely dependent on volunteer participation,” noted Emily Bas-tian, Brook Trout Survey Project Coordinator at Maine Audubon. “This is an exciting opportunity for people who care about conser-vation and love to fi sh to make a meaningful contribution to the conservation of wild brook trout, a signifi cant and unique ecologi-cal, economic and cultural re-source for Maine.”

Volunteer anglers are needed to survey 300+ ponds in north-ern Maine and coastal streams ranging from Kennebunk to Lu-bec. Surveys can be completed any time before September 30, 2015. The prime time for coast-al stream surveys is mid-April through June, while pond fi sh-ing can be productive in both the spring and fall. Project partners will provide maps, data sheets and instructions on how to sur-vey ponds and streams.

To sign up to volunteer, contact Emily Bastian at 781-2330 x207 or [email protected]. For more information about the Brook Trout Survey Project, visit maineaudubon.org/brooktrout.

“A sad farewell.”To the Editor:As we all said farewell on March 27th to Pastor Tom Bruce and his volunteer crew, our hearts are fi lled

with sadness. Pastor Tom has been serving our community for many years, as a Pastor and thoughtful person. He has been working very hard to keep “The Living Word” Food Cupboard going for over twenty years. He cares deeply for all the people he has served at the church and the food cupboard. He has taken the time to pray for and also with folks who have asked for his help. He has helped out people who needed food and also a kind word. He has been a blessing to us and many others. He has a big heart and will be deeply missed by all of us that have entered into his life. Thank You Pastor Tom and all of the volunteers for a Good Job. “WELL DONE”

Safe travels in your new adventure in life. May God Bless and keep you safe in His Arms. The Dodge’sDover Foxcroft

“I guess it takes some longer to learn.”To the Editor:This is an inquiry for information about this proposed Quimby National Park. Can anyone tell me the

difference between this park and the East West Transportation Corridor?Do not both force the sale of privately owned land?Do not both promise large employment numbers?Do not both say it is great for the local economy?Do not both say it is good for the State economy? Will we as citizen be given the opportunity to vote on either one or both? Will not both be fenced and or posted against trespass? Will we not have to pay a fee to use either one?One stated that they only want a highway when their own study says they will need to incorporate all

forms of transportation to make it profi table. One stated that they only want to give one hundred fi fty thousand acres when their own web site wants

three million, one hundred fi fty thousand acres (two million, nine hundred fi fty thousand acres owned by others).

If this proposed transportation corridor is such a gift to Maine why doesn’t the State build it?If the proposed Park is such a great scheme, I wonder why Baxter State Park isn’t making the State

and local economy boom. Aren’t both spokespersons from Maine? If so, I guess they prove the old saying. “Just because a cat has

kittens in the oven doesn’t make um biscuits.” They might sop up the molasses pretty good but a little too squirmy for me.

The tree growth incentive tax law says that, a change in use will automatically invoke a penalty, the payment of all back taxes plus interest. Will either one be charged this tax penalty? This penalty should, if calculated correctly, be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars if not a few million dollars.

Can anyone inform me as to the plan to pay these tax penalties to the local towns or counties or State? Will our benevolent politicians, who seem to be absent on these schemes, be kindhearted and wave this

penalty for either one or both? It’s so easy to be free with other people’s money. Here they are both the same. At face value both have a good proposal but just like a face lift both hide

what they really look like. Both give good amounts of money to politicians. I wonder what they get for their money. Both are schemes that will continue to draw people in just as the false prophets of old and new.

Here are a few differences that I can see. One will not let you or I have free access to their land. The other says that it will be open to hunting, forest harvesting and other activities. In my opinion, one is telling the truth, the other one? Not so much. One draws in investors from all over the world. The other draws in fl atlander trust-funders that are embarrassed by their parent’s, or their own, wealth. One oper-ates a Maine based business. One took their business out of Maine only to return and tell us Mainers how backward and uneducated we are. In essence: calling us ignorant, country bum-kens. (We learn pretty fast hee-ah.)

If both got together and really wanted to get the Maine economy rocking and a rolling, they could build on the grow local theme that could rival any country and give Mainers the employment that builds a great society. Just a thought.

Has anyone else ever noticed that when something is actually good for us it just gets done? But when something is not, then the proponent has to continually talk and talk about it, show us how foolish we are for not wanting it, get others involved to limp it along and try to sway public opinion to believe it is good for them. (I guess it takes some longer to learn.)

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Pine Tree Hospice will offer its CORE training for volunteers during the week of April 12 - 18. The 11 hour training prepares individuals to support hospice clients in their home or at a healthcare facility. The training is free and open to both men and women in the community.

There are 450,000 hospice volunteers in the United States. Hospice programs care for 60 percent of all dying patients each year, a total of 1.5 million. Because of lack of information, patients and their families seldom take advantage of all the hospice services that are available. This is unfortunate, since hospice can enrich the end of life experience, creating a way to live out our lives with dignity and purpose.

Pine Tree Hospice, as a volunteer hospice, is able to provide services without charge and without a phy-sician’s referral. Volunteers offer non-medical assistance, such as companionship, respite for caregivers, help with errands, conversations about history, or cooking a special treat. The client may enjoy playing a game or watching a movie, going for a walk or looking at photo albums. The goal is for a caring supportive relationship between the hospice client and volunteer to develop, helping to enrich the life of the client and enabling them to do things they enjoy. The specialty of a hospice volunteer is fulfi lling last wishes, which are often as simple as eating McDonald’s French fries or going fi shing.

The Core Training begins on Sunday, April 12, 1 - 6:30 p.m. The training continues on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 5 – 8:30 p.m. Meals are provided. Call 564-4346 or email [email protected] to register.

Pay It Forward: Become a Pine Tree Hospice Volunteer

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Beginning April 21, the Alliance will offer it’s hotline training in Piscataquis County at their 8 Mechanic Street offi ce in Dover-Foxcroft. Volunteer from the comfort of your own home and provide critical support and individualized safety planning over the phone or assist them during the regular work day in one of our offi ces, either in Dover-Foxcroft or in the Bangor offi ce.

This is a comprehensive 40 hour training for paid and unpaid staff. The training prepares one to be an advocate for those with issues around abuse. Advocates provide information to callers on the hotline about the dynamics of domestic abuse, the effects of family violence on children, relevant legal and social issues, safety planning and crisis intervention. Advocates support and validate a caller’s feelings, iden-tify and explore options, make referrals for other needed services and do safety planning. The training is presented in 12 three hour sessions.

This training will meet from 4 to 7 p.m. the fi rst night. At that time they will determine the days and times that will work best for the participants. This could be a daytime or an evening training. Call Ginger at 564-8166 or email her at [email protected]. for more information.

PITTSFIELD - Sebasticook Valley Health (SVH) was presented with 24 hand-made quilts from area women as part of Project Linus, which provides handmade ‘security blankets’ for children who are seri-ously ill or traumatized. SVH President and CEO/EMHS Senior Vice President Terri Vieira, with Director of Nursing Amanda White, accepted the quilts from Project Linus Kennebec County coordinator, Merlene Sanborn. SVH volunteer chaplain Rev. Laura Peckman, along with other quilters from Bangor Savings Bank – Carrie Orcutt, Kathryn Taylor, and Robin Chase – were in attendance during the presentation.

“These lovely hand-made quilts will help comfort our pediatric patients who come to SVH for care,” explained Vieira. “A hospital can be a scary place for children, especially when they’re sick or hurt, and a quilt can help comfort a child who may be in pain or in need of care.”

Project Linus is a national volunteer program that collects and distributes over fi ve million blankets every year to children who are seriously ill or traumatized. Named for the Charles Schulz’s Peanuts character, Linus, who was known for carrying a blanket, Project Linus gives new, washable, handmade blankets to children 0 to 18 years old who are in stressful situations, like an emergency room visit, x-ray for a broken bone, or a lab test. There are currently fi ve Project Linus chapters in Maine and over 350 chapters in the US.

Project Linus relies on donations of money and blankets or quilts from crafters and community groups. For more information about Project Linus, visit their website at ProjectLinus.org.
