Last year, my daughter Alexa—then in 2nd grade—struggled with the transition to a new school. She sobbed on the way to school every morning, convinced she’d never make friends and that her teacher didn’t like her. Prayers, hugs, and notes in the lunchbox didn’t seem to help much. (What was happening to my “mom magic”?) After many tear-filled mornings, God put the answer right on my desk at Group. I received a set of Bible Memory Buddies for approval and carefully read the Scripture on each one, making sure they were all correct. Then I came to that watery dude, Dewd. “I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.” (Psalm 23:4) The next day, Alexa bravely went to school with Dewd clutched in her hand. Perched in her desk next to yellow pencils and bubble gum-scented erasers, Dewd reminded Alexa of God’s presence...in a way that I couldn’t. That little blue Buddy travelled from home to school and back for the entire school year—long after Alexa made great friends and discovered that her teacher loved her. And even better, Alexa got to share her faith with curious friends who saw the little blue dude. She read the Scripture passage and told them that it made her feel better to know that God was with her. That smiling, surfing Buddy gave me a way to put God’s Word into my daughter’s hands...and heart.

HErE’S HOW IT WOrKS: It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3!

On Day 5, the Crafts Leader will distribute two Comfort Critters to each child (one to give away, and one to keep). Kids will stuff the turtles with Poly-fil, comparing the stuffing to how they’re filling children’s lives with God’s love. They’ll seal the turtles and then draw a special note (found in each child’s student book) to include in the Comfort Critter’s pocket. Kids will also slip a copy of The Survivors Booklet into the pocket.

Then each crew will huddle together and pray for the children who will receive their gifts of love.

That day, during Firefly Finale, each of the kids will come forward and set one Comfort Critter on the stage as an offering. This is a powerful, moving ceremony. Kids and leaders will be amazed as they see just how many turtles and books they can send to children in North America. It’s a concrete way for kids to see that it’s easy to shine God’s love. (And it’s a simple way for kids to be a God Sighting!)
