HAILE'S (Pineapple Stitch) Baby Booties
Oh babies! They're just so cute and
cuddly and you just want to adorn them
with all the cute things you can make
and find like this pair of crocheted baby
shoes!
Since I'm giving birth this November
2012, I decided to crochet these cute
pairs of shoes. And since they're super
cute, I'm sharing the pattern with
everyone. I hope you make one for your
newborns, too.
The sole of the shoe is a simple oval of
dc's.
The body of the shoe uses pineapple
stitch, a vintage crochet stitch you can
hardly find in modern patterns. The
pineapple stitches are worked in a
spiral and decreased at various points to achieve the shoe's shape.

Close up on the toe. See those beautifulhearts piling over each other? I love them.
Close up on the heel. It's curved to fit nicely(hopefully) on my baby's heels.
The sole of the shoe is slightly raised.
The decreases of the pineapple stitches folds the sole up giving the shoe more
interest.
This pattern includes a high resolution chart pattern along with the written pattern.
The chart pattern took 3 days to make. But for a pattern this beautiful, it's all worth it.
Required Skills:
Ch, dc, sl st
Working on both sides of the chain
Working multiple dc's in single
chain
Pineapple stitch
Optional: changing colors
Materials:
Size 8 mercerized crochet cotton
3/0 - 4/0 steel hook
Tapestry needle
Scissors
Measurements:
Length: 3.5 in
Width: 1.5 inc
Height: 1 in
Gauge: 8 dc per inch; 5 pineapple stitch
per inch
Notes:
I have not actually fitted these shoes to
a newborn baby. The measurements I
used is based on this size chart.

The sole is an oval of dc's.
When turned inside out, the texture is sobeautiful too!
The sole is 4 inch long while crocheting.
Once the body of pineapple stiches is
added, the sole folds up reducing it's
length to 3.5 in.
The pineapple stitch has a tendency to
lean. Therefore, when examined closely
a pair of shoes looks like two left shoes.
To remedy that, I used flowers to define
the left and right shoe.
The shoe can be lengthened or
shortened by adjusting the foundation
chain. All shaping stitches occur at the
heel and toe.
Special Stitch: The Pineapple Stitch
I discovered the pineapple stitch in a vintage crochet book from our college library. I
love the look of inverted hearts piled over each other and the thick textured crochet
fabric it produces.
However, to crochet a rectangle of pineapple stitches, you have to break off at the
end of each row which can automatically become fringes. But working this way is
cumbersome, wastes a lot of yarn, and well, uhm, boring.
But who said that's the only way to work the pineapple stitch?
In most of my projects, I crochet the pineapple stitch spirally in rounds. It's more
convenient this way even though I end up with pineapple stitches that don't pile up in
a straight vertical line even when blocked.

Close up on the heel showing a normal pineapple stitch and a 3-pineapple stitch decrease.
Close up on the toe showing the last dc round of the sole and 2-pineapple stitch decrease.
Parts of the Pineapple Stitch
Instructions will be much easier to comprehend if we all know the parts of the
pineapple stitch.
Top Loop - connects the pineapple stitch to other stitches
Leg Loops - anchors the pineapple stitch; a normal pineapple stitch will have two leg
loops while a pineapple stitch decrease will have more leg loops.
Lid Chain - caps the pineapple stitch to make the "heart" pattern more pronounced
How to Make a Pineapple Stitch
In this pattern, there are four different sets of instructions on how to crochet a
conventional pineapple stitch depending where it is anchored. All of them are in a
photo tutorial floating next to the written pattern.
The following instruction is for the very first pineapple stitch worked on top of
another stitch (like dc's or sc's or ch's).
THE CURRENT LOOP ON HOOK WILL BE THE TOP LOOP.
INSERT HOOK IN ST, DRAW A LOOP THROUGH.

Changing Colors (Video)
Working this shoe in various colors adds and/or changes this shoes' personality.
Here's a very good video tutorial for changing colors in crochet.
