I hope the New Year has lifted your spirits
and you are looking forward to a year of new, exciting and our annual
events. The release of Macquarieperch fingerlings into the 4 areas on
the Ovens River between Wangaratta and Myrtleford occurredon Friday
22ndJanuary, followed by Australia Day Celebrations. In February I will
be attending the Rural City of Wangarattas
leadership program and back into doing
WATERWATCH at the White Street Bridgealong One Mile Creek. Dr Scott Raymond
and his crew from the Arthur Rylah Institute
will be up early February to do some Electro fishing to monitornative
fish populations and also remove carp with the assistance of
Wangaratta Sustainability Network volunteers. Then its time for
WSN-ROWS Clean Up Australia Dayon Sunday 6th March along
One Mile Creek. The RCOWs CUA will be on Tuesday March 1st
along the One Mile Creek from Cribbes Road to
the Vincent Road Bridge with a guided walk as theygo. Meet 6.00pm at the Yarrunga Scout Hall. Pizza
is on the menu and you can also win prizes in what
will be a fun night and I hope to get there.
There are some funding grants open at the moment and WSN will seek
funding to undertake some new environmental projects on local
waterways, so lets hope we receive some favourable results.

Macquarie Perch Fingerling Release, Friday 22ndJanuary 2016
Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning's (DELWP)
Senior Biodiversity Officer, Glen Johnson,
said:
"In a joint effort with community volunteers
including members of Wangaratta
Sustainability Network, we released
around 6400 Macquarie Perch fingerlings
today into the Ovens River between
Wangaratta and Myrtleford.
"The fingerlings were bred by Fisheries Victoria at the Snob's Creek Fish
Hatchery, with the breeding program funded by recreational fishing licence fees
and the State Government's Target One Million plan.
"These stockings value add to and form part of a broader five-year collaborative
program to re-establish a self-sustaining Macquarie Perch population in the
Ovens catchment.
"Future releases are planned in May this year involving the direct translocation of adult fish from the healthy
Dartmouth Dam population to be released to create a multi-age population and kick start natural breeding
and species growth.
"During the past three years, more than 60,000 fingerlings have been stocked and
700 juvenile to adult fish, collected and translocated from Dartmouth Dam have
been released into the Ovens
"DELWP plan to undertake electro-fishing surveys in a few months to help
determine the survival and spread of stocking fingerlings and translocated adults,
clarify which technique is working best and identify whether translocated adults have
already bred and recruited new fish naturally into the population.
"Other works will also include re-snagging to provide critical large aquatic habitat for native fish and the
Wangaratta Sustainability Network's ongoing Carp control program.
"This project is jointly funded through DELWP Hume Region, the Victorian Governments ThreatenedSpecies Protection Initiative, recreational fishing licence fees and the Target One Million Plan, and the
Australian Governments National Landcare Program."

AROUND THE TRAPS
WATERWATCH
Wednesday 20thJanuary 2016 at Kaluna Park
It was a catch up and a little re-
training with Vanessa Thompson from
NECMA, Gill Baker WSN, Sophie
and Adele from the Rural City of
Wangarattas Environment Team. If
you are interested in joining and
monitoring a site along our waterways
contact NECMA on 02-60437600
I also registered the site I am going to monitor this year just near the White Street
Bridge along One Mile Creek and at the moment it is not a beautiful site.
FLOOD MAPPING WITH NECMA
Tuesday 19thJanuary 2016
This was a very interesting drop in session all about obtaining data from community members in
order to update flood mapping. For further information see an article that was in the Chronicle
Monday 25thJan page 3. We spotted a possum out mid-day trying to cool off from a sprinklerwatering under the tree.

CARP HERPES VIRUS
The research into this virus has been very extensive tested and has proven to be safe for ourNative fish. A 17 page CSIRO blog paper. Dr Ken McColl was released on 13 January titledUsing herpes virus to eradicate feral fish? Carp Diem!

You can also contact me as I have a number of hard copies of the report.
There will be a strategy meeting with all regulatory bodies and scientist on the 4thMarch 2016 atthe Latrobe Conference centre..At a recent meeting, Native Fish Victoria tabled submissions to changebag limits for yellow bellyin streams and lakes and also closing streams in prolific breeding periods.
GOOD NEWS.
Carp have been self-destructing in some waterways due to very hot weather, low water flows and
a lack of oxygen. This was particularly noticeable in the Broken Creek and a number ofbillabongs. I encourage you to use the Feral Fish Scan website for significant sightings of carp.
