A new Crime Prevention Unit program allows residents to register their property via the department’s website. Information, including the make, model and serial number of the bicycle or generator, is stored in the police department’s database. Should the items ever be stolen, officers can quickly access information that is critical to locating stolen property. The information also makes it possible for officers to list the property as stolen in state and national databases. “The only way to reunite a generator or bicycle with its owner is with a serial number,” Crime Prevention Officer Rita Swan said. “We encourage city residents to take a few minutes to fill out this form online. It will help us help them should their property be stolen.” Most bicycles and generators are stolen because they are not properly secured. Swan suggests storing your generator or bicycle in a locked storage shed or garage when not in use.
