Crime maps
Mock ups for Power of Information Task Force and Home Office
Presume ‘spot’ data available to overlay onto Google Maps – many forces have this, even if they don’t plan to publish it
Aggregates data into ‘post code sectors’ – several hundred households, an approximation to a neighbourhood (eg for NN6 8AH sector is NN6 8)
Includes call to action for people to do something about the crime – unique feature not found on most American and UK crime maps
Overlays non crime data such as schools, pubs, cash machines
All done on presumption that Safer Neighbourhood Teams have limited time
Pictures bring data to life – easy to over estimate numerical literacy when producing league tables and performance data:
47% of the UK population cannot understand…‘straightforward mathematical information’ nor can they ‘independently select relevant information from given numerical information’
‘Skills for Life’ survey 2003 DfES Research Report 490
Is crime rising or falling in my area?
Falling Rising
Computer generated heuristic text based on
data
Where SNT produce info it can be displayed here
SNT police can email in top priorities set by Safer
Neighbourhood Panel and is automatically displayed
Simple vote on SNP priorities
Links to SNT mini site or page on Force website
Slider to set time period for comparison
Post code driven
Force badge is post code sensitive
Two layers of detail and call to action
DUMMY DATA
How can I do something about it…..?
Interactive element – clicking on map converts
to an email to crime reporting email address
Simple email to SNT email address (they all
have one)
Call for volunteers (sends email to SNT)
Basic contact info
Connects to other participation mechanisms to write to Cllr, MP etc via www.writetothem.com and via www.fixmystreeet.com
Call to action almost completely missing in existing mapping propositions
DUMMY DATA
How does my area compare to similar areas?
Computer generated heuristic text based on
data
Crime relative to similar areas – similarity determined from
Acorn Demographic Profiles
DUMMY DATA
What precisely has happened in the last year?
Some crimes could be point data
Simple chart – ultra local, ward, borough
More detailed stats
Computer generated heuristic text based on
data
Detailed selector
DUMMY DATA
Some crimes ‘fuzzied’ up to post code sector to
protect victims etc
Where is it safe to park my car around here?
Car crime in different colours, mapped on to the
location of car parks
Rich potential to blend in other national data sets – eg cash machines, pubs
(for local licensing committees), schools
