A note from the editor

It’s been an incredibly busy month. With our committee pushed to the lim-its. Groundsmen have had to prepare more games than ever in a month, players and coaches have had to play and run the games, so I apologise for the lateness of this month’s issue, we usually aim to send the issue out between the 10-15th of each month so yes we are incredibly late with June’s issue.

Accept my apology and be prepared for a fantastic June issue and the July issue is due out Friday 12th July. (I’d better get writing)

If anyone would like to write something/ add something/ advertise something or make a suggestion, please don’t hesitate. This isn’t a closed shop we are always looking to move forward with feedback and new articles each month.

Hope you enjoy this month’s issue.

Committee’s Chat

With the NSSCCL celebrating a major anniversary this year, all clubs have been asked to write a small piece about their clubs history. Alan Jones has stepped up and written a wonderful piece which will be featured in a league book marking the anniversary.

The origins of Barlaston Cricket Club can be traced back to 1868. Our first hundred years was marked in 1968 by a festival of cricket which included games against The Midland Cricket Club Conference, the President’s XI and Staffordshire Gentlemen. A large marquee was erected on the ground and a cocktail party held with representatives from many cricket clubs in the county and the Chairman of Stone Rural District Council.

There is evidence to suppose that the club first came into being as a country house team representing Barlaston Hall and the Broughton-Adderley family whose estate included much of the village of Barlaston.

At the beginning of the last century the pavilion was an old railway carriage, the club had between 30 and 40 members and the fixture list included ten teams no longer in existence – Bucknall, Basford, Eturia and Wolstanton among them. Fundraising was largely confined to dances and whist drives and total income was less than £20 for the year. During the war years, 1914 to 1918 no minutes were taken of meetings but interestingly during 1918 Mrs. Broughton-Adderley wrote to the secretary instructing him to remind the farmer that the field was given to the village for cricket and that her three sons who were in France would be very displeased to hear otherwise. The cricket field was finally purchased by the Parish Council in 1956 and let to the cricket club for a peppercorn rent. The sum involved was raised by loans from the wealthy pottery manufacturers who lived in the village.

Following the purchase of the ground the next twenty years arguably provided Barlaston with its greatest period of development and success as a club cricket side until entry into the North Staffs and South Cheshire League. In the late 60’s the Saturday first XI remained undefeated for a whole season whilst the Sunday first XI lost only one game playing against some of the strongest clubs in the midlands.

The cricket club has remained very much a village club. Players and officials living locally with a strong connection to the nearby conurbation of Blurton and particularly the High School. The present five officers have a total of over two hundred years association with the club. Membership is small with the exception of the Junior section which over recent years has developed into an excellent training facility for local youngsters many of whom have represented the district and or county.

We are blessed of course with a wonderful picturesque ground. The square and outfield have improved greatly due largely to the work of the Chairman and Vice Chairman who happen to be the groundsmen also. It is quite common for our members to have more than one job. Following a period of mining subsidence during the 70’s and 80’s it was necessary to replace what was our 3rd pavilion in thirty years. After much hard work we now have a two storey brick pavilion which has excellent facilities for players and spectators. It is our intention to continue to develop this further.

We seem to have come a long way since the days of ‘Fred’ Cholerton, groundsman and general factotum of the club during the 50’s and 60’s. Fred, master craftsman at Wedgwood produced a pint mug adorned with the names of the teams we played against and the ‘Captain’s pot’ was kept at the Duke of York for use by the opposition captain. We have had our successes in the league but much remains to be done to establish ourselves as a premier league club.

The people of the village have been most supportive particularly when we built our pavilion. The Cricket Field is a wonderful village amenity and long may it be so.

Fascinating article from Alan and I invite him to write us anything he likes about our amazing clubs wonderful history, reading this even myself who has only been here for two year feels a certain sense of pride that I am playing for such a historic club.

Captain's Column

The season has well and truly got under way and while my last report in May em-phasised a poorer start than expected the last month has brought with it some much needed positive results.Early in the month, league form was not great resulting in a painful loss at Ash-combe Park. This however has seemed to be the spur that was needed as the first eleven have embarked on a superb unbeaten run. Great wins in the T20 against Crewe and premier league Checkley spurred the boys to a fabulous win against Moddershall. Another great win against Sandyford was then followed by a resound-ing victory over a full strength Longton side in the Staffs cup. An excellent fight back against Meakins secured a draw which keeps the run going. We also had an excel-lent win last week against Silverdale, and again against Alsager. This great league form was then followed by a super effort in pummelling Woore and Eccleshall in the second round of the T20. We are now into the semi finals of the T20 and Second round of the Staffs cup. Yes we have actually won a game on a Sunday!!!!The team is now very much on the up despite the league position at the moment. Bronson has begun to fire, drilling a superb century in the T20 against Crewe and scoring plenty of runs in the league as well. Similarly the burly left hander Jack Dav-ies has been wielding his willow like a caveman's club smashing attacks to all parts in league and cup. Tom Taylor has recovered from injury and the return of awesome all rounder Alex Thorley should see us in good stead for the rest of the year. The rest of the team too have contributed in so many ways working exceptionally to raise their standards of fielding to the level required and refusing to be beaten with the bat and ball alike. Teams are realising that when they play Barlaston they have to bring their A game or they will lose.

Onward and upward boys

Jon Taylor (Captain)

Name: Sam Taylor

Age: 18

Occupation: Student

Role at Cricket Club: A player when selected! 3XI Vice-Captain, U17's Coach, Publicity Secretary (including co-editing this marvellous newsletter), Groundsman. Chief Optimist.

Previous Clubs: None.

Proudest moment in Cricket: With ease it's having a role in winning the U17's Cup and League double in 2011.

Lowest moment in Cricket: Also with ease, being the main (some would argue only) reason behind an U15 Cup semi-final defeat at Little Stoke. I'm sure some in-sufferable oaf will give you the details.

Best player you’ve played with: Obviously with having a fairly limited back cata-logue of senior cricket I can't pull an amazing name out of the air. So I'll keep it close to home: The only player who has ever amazed me countlessly when I've played and batted with them is Jack Davies. He's a match-winner, against any bowl-ing. Even if he is a bit fat.

Best player you’ve played against: No-one really sticks out in my memory. Proba-bly because if they're playing against us, I don't think anyone is very good. Or else they'd be playing for us, wouldn't they?!

Hidden talents: I can play cricket. Keeping it hidden for the foreseeable future though.

Football team: Port Vale

Page 6: CRICKET PROFESSIONAL CONTRACT OF …p-cgallery.ecb.co.uk.s3.amazonaws.com/4438b0c0-5f...  · Web viewEst. 1868. President. T.A.Jones. 17 ... Great wins in the T20 against Crewe and

Favourite artist: Vincent Van Gogh

Favourite food: Donner meat and chips from the Priory Fish Bar. Oh my word.

Favourite drink: JD and Coke.

Favourite cricket player: Shoaib Malik and Asghar Bajwa. If you don't know why, leave the club immediately. England wise - Jonathan Trott, because he's class and gets loads of stick for it; and James Anderson. Could watch him bowl all day.

What would your hobby be if you didn’t play cricket: I'd umpire and earn the ex-tortionate £37 a game for ruining people's weekends.

Club you would most like to play for: Anywhere to play Saturday cricket every week.

Superstitions: No comment – don’t want to ruin Neil’s game featuring in the next edition!

What would you like to happen at Barlaston in the next 5 years?

On the field I'd like us to win leagues. Simple as that. Off the field I'd like us to evolve to be much more businesslike, in every aspect, rather than settling for medi-ocrity because it's easiest.

Review of Senior Section

First Team: We have started to find our form in the league and cups, Second round of the Staffordshire cup and the semi-finals of the T20 competition, We are also undefeated in the past 3 league games, beating Moddershall and Sandyford and then drawing against the league’s top side Meakins. After last week’s great win against Alsager we go and play Little Stoke at home this weekend.

Second Team: A steady month for the second team, with Leigh being a fixture in the first team recently Wayne has taken over captaincy duties well with two wins in their last two games! Alongside a Talbot Shield win against Stone SP, we have Stafford in the next round so we have a really good chance to do well this season. We sit third in the table 9 points off the top.

Third Team: Carl’s team are sitting mid-table after a quiet month with other teams taking preference on cup duties. A heavy defeat against Wedgewood last time out hurt us badly but I’m sure the boys will carry on fighting for every point possible to stay in this division for another year.

Just a quick note that training is still on Tuesday nights 6pm- 8.30pm. Please come down and practice your trade.

The Phoenix team have 2 games left so if anyone fancies a chance to bat and bowl in a game situation please let Pank know before Tuesday’s selection.

Review of Junior Section

Summer Fayre: For this year’s summer fayre, the junior section will be running a tombola and book sale. I am in need of some help! I am looking for donations of mainly bottled items but also other items you deem useable for tombola. Please pass any items to Claire or Steve behind the bar by Friday 12th July. Also as part of the organising committee, I cannot commit myself to running the entire stall all day. I am looking for volunteers to run the stall and the children to help run small games that have been organised for the day, again speak to Claire if you can help.

Parents Vs Kids Kwik Cricket/BBQ: Friday 12th July. As many of our juniors and coaches venture on their summer holidays as soon as schools finish. We have planned a fun evening where our parents can show off their cricket skills and try and outclass the kids. The evening will be organised into four separate games depending on your child’s age group. All you need to do is come dressed appropriately and get the burgers in.

If anyone else has any ideas on how the club can raise money, please see one of the committee members with your ideas.

Grants Committee

A small committee has been formed to look at how we can raise much needed funds to keep Barlaston CC fit and healthy for the future.

We are looking to fund the following projects through grants if possible:

Relocation and refurbishment of the outdoor netsReplacement of practise wicketReplacement of various pieces of ground equipmentFunds for level 2 coaching courses/first aid courses etcAdditional mobile cover

To date six applications have been submitted with a further three being put together as we speak. We will update you each month with wins and rejections but fingers crossed for good news.

We have had excellent news from our application to the ECB for wet weather equipment and have been awarded £750. We are still waiting for the cheque to arrive.

We have been awarded £600 from The Sir Stanley Matthews Foundation so we can pay for some of our amazing coaches to be fully qualified.

An application has been completed and sent to Tesco Fund for £4k towards the replacement of ground equipment. Decision is due September 2013.

You can also help to raise valuable funds by logging into Easy Fundraising.org.uk and register. Every time you shop on the internet via the Easy Fundraising web site the club receives a donation and as we know every little helps!
