From The Principal …
HSC comes to an end
The Higher School Certificate exams have finally come to an end much to the relief of both
students and parents. As a school community we have certainly been very conscious of
supporting our students through this period and I must commend Years 7-11 on the respect
they have shown in keeping the area around the hall (where exams were held) calm and quiet.
I wish all students the best for results and now we can look forward to the ‘event of the year’
the Year 12 Formal.
Student Leaders 2015
At the beginning of term 4 our Student Leaders 2015 took office. They have already been
engaged in meetings and leadership camp to discuss their focus areas for the coming year. On
Tuesday 4 November our School Captains and House Captains went to Crestwood Public
School to work with Year 5 students in a newly implemented Student Leadership Mentoring
Program.
During the day our students led activities to build interpersonal skills and foster teamwork, all
qualities essential for an effective leader. Our student leaders gained invaluable experience
implementing the skills they learned at the Mitchell Leadership Forum held in October and had
the opportunity to build a rapport with the enthusiastic students from Crestwood Public
School.
The day was an outstanding success with excellent feedback from the staff at Crestwood Public
School and the Year 5 students. Many thanks to Mr Steve White (Crestwood High School) and
Ms Chris Joachim (Crestwood Public School) for organising this valuable program.
School Fees and Contributions
Recently notices were sent home regarding outstanding elective course fees and school
contribution payments. It would be greatly appreciated if parents/carers are able to finalise any
outstanding payments as this is a crucial source of funding for the school. If you are experiencing
financial difficulties please contact me so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

More upgrades happening in the school.
Crestwood High School is continually being upgraded and improved so that students have
the best facilities possible. The school has endeavoured to do as much as possible both
within the school’s budget and with the generous help of the P&C. Starting in the next few
weeks, new carpet will be installed in the B block foyers and stairs. The toilet upgrade has
been completed with all student toilets renovated. Over the last few months there has
been major upgrade to the technology wiring and wireless systems. Again thanks to the
support of the P&C all classrooms have good wireless connections.
Social Graces
In AIM lessons this week, students will be discussing those things we all do to ensure we
are accepted into polite society. Students will be discussing what you should do every day
to show manners and be polite, including saying “please” and “thank you”, “excuse me” and
all those other behaviours that show respect. Please discuss this at home and practice the
social graces that are so important in everyday society.
The Crestwood High School Community Mentor Program
The awards breakfast was celebrated last week with 18
students participating in the program this year. We would
like to thank our community partners for their contribution
to this valuable program. Thanks also to the staff involved in
the organisation and running of this program, in particular,
Jenny Telidis from the office.
HSC completion and celebrations
The HSC is now over for 2014. Students should ensure they
complete their sign-out process before the formal celebration next
week. The formal begins with a ‘preformal’ garden party in the rose
garden beginning at 4pm. The students will then be bussed to the
Deckhouse for their last official day as a whole group.

Year11 Engineering Studies Excursion to North West Rail Link
Recently the Year 11 Engineering Studies class had an excursion where we were visited by a senior engineer
working on the North West Rail Link. We then got in a bus and toured the alignment.
The day began with a visit by Adrian Bull, who is a senior engineer on the NWRL, who manages up to 150 other
engineers. Adrian spoke to us about engineering as a career, engineering standards and may other interesting
aspects of the NWRL project and engineering in general.
We then alighted the NWRL bus and had a tour of the alignment. We started our tour at Tallawong stabling yard,
just past Cudgegong Road station. It was interesting to discover that the government has secured a transport
corridor to the west of this location so that the NWRL can be expanded in the future. Not far from here will be
an iconic bridge over Windsor Road, just past Rouse Hill Town Centre.
Proposed bridge over Windsor road
We then drove past Rouse Hill and Kellyville stations and stopped at Bella Vista station, where the first Tunnel
Boring Machine, Elizabeth, is tunnelling towards Showground station. She has made about 500 metres progress so
far. There are currently 2 other TBMs at the NWRL and a 4th is to arrive soon.
As we drove past Norwest station, it was interesting to learn that beams from the Sydney monorail were used to
support Brookhollow Drive as its surrounds were excavated. Another interesting fact was that the removed rock,
or “spoil” will be used for other things. Shale will be used as landfill, whilst the Sydney sandstone will be used by
Austral to make house bricks. It’s great to know that such a massive project is considering the environment and
re-using materials where it can.
Our next stop was Showground station. The old Hills Council Chambers have been converted to the NWRL
operations centre. We were given a run down on the tunnel boring operation by an engineer involved in this
process. The TBMs are manned by 12 people and operated 24 hours per day, 5 days per week.
Our last stop was Cherrybrook station. It was interesting to learn that Francis de Groot, who unofficially cut the
ribbon in protest at the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in
1932, lived in a house across the road from Cherrybrook station.
We would like to thank the following people for giving up their
time to educate our students:
Tina Chin- Event organiser
Adrian Bull- Senior Engineer
Gai Hardman- Community Relations Manager
Jon Hinde- Engineering Studies Teacher

Sport News …
CONGRATULATIONS to Dylan Johnson who competed at the NSW Athletics All School
Championship. Dylan won the Under 13 Boys Pole Vault during these championships with his
clearance of 2.7 metres. Pole Vaulting is a very challenging event which requires a highly
specialized training method. It is extremely technical requiring a complex combination of skills.
Pole Vault is Australia’s most successful track event and we wish Dylan all the best in his future
in this event with the hope that he may one day add to Australia’s success. He has now been
invited to the National All Schools Championship.
A reminder for Year 7 that Swim school is fast approaching. All year 7 need to organise their
payment and return their permission slips ASAP.
Year 7 competed in a Gala Day against the other 7 schools in the Macquarie Zone. The sports
on the day were Soccer, Touch Football, AFL and Netball. All students participated well and
enjoyed the day. It was very pleasing to see our Year 7 competing and enjoying the day with
their friends.

This Term’s national ‘Canteen’ magazine has an
article about ASCA’s National 5 Star
Accreditation Program which states “Now in its
second year, the ASCA program currently has
around 100 accredited schools across Australia.”
There are 9,393 (ABS 2013) nationwide so we
are one of the first schools to achieve this
accreditation in Australia as well as NSW!

checking with our volunteers their availability
for canteen duty next year. If anyone needs to
change their rostered day please let us know. If

Please make use of this opportunity to help organise study time and improve your results.

Asking how you can be of support
Reminding them of their good points
Helping them build friendships and handle conflict with friends
