Rev. Paula Ashby could not have had a stranger introduction to life as a United Church minister in Creston.

In August, not long after she had accepted “a call” to become the

church’s pastor, she was sitting in a provincial church workshop. Next to her, the B.C. personnel director got a text message on her cellphone and gestured to Ashby to follow her out of the room.

“She showed me the message,” she said. “I was just stunned.”

Within minutes Ashby was

speaking to people who were stand-ing on 10th Avenue North, watch-ing smoke, and then flames, pour from Trinity United Church.

Ashby grew up as an air force brat, living on NATO bases through-out Europe. As an adult she owned and operated a newspaper in Gibsons. Later, she and her husband

relocated to Marin County, Calif., where she ran a lifestyle magazine.

Her experience as a journalist paved the way for a 20-year career with the provincial government, where she did administrative work and wrote news releases.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Darryl Hammond formally intro-duced himself to Creston town council at the Nov. 10 regular council meeting. Hammond, who has 35 years of service in the police service, assumed command of the Creston detachment in late August.

In his first appearance before council, he presented several maps of criminal activ-ity in the area that, he said, will help plan police patrol activity. Hammond will pres-ent his first quarterly report to council in January.

Council Briefs•Municipal services co-

ordinator Ross Beddoes pre-sented council with proposals to change water conservation measures to align with new Regional District of Central Kootenay policies. Included

in the changes is an automatic imposition of Stage 1 restric-tions from June 1-Sept. 30.

•Engineering manager Colin Farynowski commented on a letter from the Lung Association to council outlin-ing concerns about radon gas and its dangers. He said that Creston gets lumped into radon concerns in the Kootenays because there are serious issues to the east and west. Creston has different geology, he said, and radon has not been found to be a significant danger.

He does, however, plan to order some testing kits that will be free to those who want to test their homes.

•A request that Creston’s street signs also include the names of pioneers will be referred to 2017 budget discus-sions, as the 2016 process is already underway.

•Councillors were informed about a leadership forum to be held in Richmond in February.

None immediately indicated an interest in attending.

•Intern Helene Miles reported on plans for a Youth Engagement Strategy commit-tee celebration on Nov. 6 at the Sasquatch. Reports indi-cate the event was very well attended by youth and local officials.

•Finance director Steffan Klassen told council that the town’s budget is on track to be at or under spending pro-jections, with the exception of the wastewater treatment plant, which has experienced significant challenges this year.

“This is a good snapshot of where we are at,” Coun. Joe Snopek told Klassen. “You do a good job on it.”

•Applications will be made under the 2016 Union of BC Municipalities FireSmart grant program for funds to treat wildfire fuel where Creston properties abut with forested land.

Major renovations are in store for the Creston Valley Hospital’s emergency room, with a tender for construction services released Nov. 12, said the Interior Health Authority (IHA) in a press release.

The cost of the project is expect-ed to total about $650,000, made possible by bequeathals from the estates of Jessie Julia Hopper, Don and Dariel Anne Korczynski, and Blanche Oleskiw, currently held by the East Kootenay Foundation for Health (EKFH).

“EKFH is proud to have played a role in the stewardship of these

legacy gifts,” said EKFH executive director Donna Grainger. “These individuals and families have truly left an indelible mark in the quality of health care available at the Creston hospital.”

The goal of the redesign, said the IHA press release, is to improve patient privacy and flow, at the same time increasing efficiency and effectiveness of the space.

“Both physicians and nurses have been very involved in the planning process and we are very excited to see the project moving forward to the construction stage,” said Creston Valley Hospital site manager Carolyn Hawton.

The renovation will create a new triage and registration room, a cen-tral nursing station and a “fast-track area for minor treatment of less acute patients.”

“We are so grateful for the strong community support for health care in our Creston community,” said Town of Creston Mayor Ron Toyota. “It’s the generosity of our people that makes our community a great place to live.”

The tender will close this month, with construction expected to begin in January. The project should be complete in the spring of 2016.

“The renovations to the Creston emergency department will focus

on improvements that will ensure patient-centred care and enhance the working environment for staff,” said Health Minister Terry Lake. “These upgrades are particu-larly meaningful for Creston com-munity because of the generous donations from the estates of local residents.”

“Creston Valley Hospital plays a vital role in providing acute health care to residents in this part of the East Kootenay region,” said IHA board chair Erwin Malzer. “We are very pleased to see this project moving forward and grate-ful for the donations that made it possible.”

The theme of gratitude comes to mind as I look back on last week, a workweek broken in half by Remembrance Day.

On Nov. 9 I got an email reminder of the next morning’s Remembrance Day assembly at Adam Robertson Elementary School. For the past few years I have attended at the invitation of Grade 7 teacher Tanya Poznikoff. Each year she produces a short play that her class presents at the assembly. The productions are con-sistently outstanding — beautiful to look at, lovely to listen to and are an invitation for the audience to meditate on what it means to families and communities when their members go off to war.

Later, I was surprised to see a post on Facebook from former CBC Almanac host Mark Forsythe about attendance at the cenotaph in Fort Langley for the Remembrance Day service. Forsythe visited Creston Valley Public Library earlier this year to promote his latest book, From the West Coast to the Western Front: British Columbians and the Great War. He tends to notice such things and commented that in 1998 there were two people at the ceno-taph ceremony. This year, 17 years and the 9-11 horror later, the crowd numbered in the thousands, he said.

I had another appointment scheduled on Wednesday so I did not attend the cenotaph ceremony in Creston. Instead, I was out at Shukin Orchards, witnessing the sixth annual effort to send apples and gift items to Shamattawa, an isolated northern Manitoba com-munity. It has become a truly

remarkable project, with organiz-ers Muriel Buhr and Terrie Faulkner working year-round to collect clothing, notions and small gifts to send to the community before Christmas. Buhr’s interest

was piqued years ago when she was invited to the home of friends whose RCMP officer son was visit-ing. In conversations over dinner he mentioned the challenges faced by the isolated and poverty-strick-en community of Shamattawa, where he was posted. Items we take for granted, like fruit, he said, are luxuries in fly-in communities, where battered and bruised apples cost a small fortune at the town’s grocery store.

Buhr approached Ken Shukin, whose Shukin Orchard donates tons of fruit to food banks around the province, and the plan was hatched. She has woven together a remarkable team of volunteers, including trucking companies and airlines that transport the half-doz-en or so tightly wrapped pallets to Shamattawa at no charge. I was genuinely moved to see the enthu-siasm of the seven women, includ-ing three teenagers, as they sorted through items to create gift packs for each child in the 1,400-member

reserve. Next week’s Advance will include a story and photos as we work with Buhr and Faulkner to acknowledge the many who help in this most worthy project.

The Shamattawa effort is all the more impressive knowing it comes at the same time when much of our attention turns to the local food bank and the hamper fund, both of which fill huge gaps in the lives of the less fortunate of our friends and neighbours. Add to that the recent fundraiser led by Brandy Dyer for the family of the man who lost his life in a sawmill accident, and the efforts by Canyon-Lister Fire Department to aid the family that lost its home to fire last month, and one starts to get a better appreciation of this community’s endless generosity.

Finally, if I needed another reminder to feel gratitude at this time of year, I needed only to stare at a picture from Global News in Calgary. In it, my son and another RCMP member, both dressed in the traditional red serge, were casting salutes in front of the Memorial Drive cenotaph after placing wreaths on behalf of their fellow officers. I sent him a message later to tell him how proud I was, the more so because he also took our grand-children, ages three and six. His response was simple, that it is important to him and his wife that the kids gain an appreciation for the countless women and men who serve their community and country.

He grew up in Creston, so of course I wasn’t surprised.

Since installing iPads in the chil-dren’s area earlier this year, many par-ents have expressed concerns about their use and availability. Here is one of the comments I received, which suc-cinctly summarizes the main concerns:

“Since you have added iPads to the library, we can no longer go to play and learn with our toddler because they are only interested in them. Kids already watch and play on iPads, computers and TV too much at home, and now it has taken over our library. I understand the need for kids to learn about technology but they get enough of that everywhere else.”

The planning of the children’s area was completed over the course of more than a year by a committee consisting of longtime volunteers, staff, board members and community members. We also invited input from a variety of local consultants. The topic of intro-ducing computer technology to the area was contentious, and the decision was not taken lightly.

I was, and remain, a strong propo-nent of having computers in the chil-dren’s area.

The basis of my support is my commitment to the principles of intellectual freedom and equitable access to information. One of the statements in our library policies (available on our website) reads:

“It is the responsibility of libraries to guarantee and facilitate access to all expressions of knowledge and intel-lectual activity, including those which some elements of society may consider

to be unconventional, unpopular or unacceptable. To this end, libraries shall acquire and make available the widest variety of materials.”

Erecting barriers that inhibit an individual’s ability to access infor-mation is contrary to our mandate as a public library and something that we strive to avoid.

Barriers in this instance might include placing computers in adult areas where they may not feel comfort-able using the computers, using com-puter furniture that is inappropriate for smaller people, placing computers in restricted areas where access requires staff intervention, and using Internet filters to block content.

This might seem like an overly abstract or intellectual response to a very practical problem, but it is important to keep in mind that pub-lic libraries are bound to certain val-ues that, in some cases, transcend local community values (however those might be defined).

As a librarian, I make a point of visiting libraries whenever I travel to new places. In many communities

— especially larger centres — the issue of computers in children’s areas was debated and decided in favour of computers a decade or more ago. In some communities, it remains a contentious issue.

As a parent of a young child who is both a regular library user and has access to various forms of technology at home, I sympathize with parents who see technology in the library as an unwanted distraction. The library’s mandate, however, is to serve all members of the community, many of whom do not have access to up-to-date technology at home.

Limiting a child’s exposure to tech-nology and spending time together at the library are not incompatible. However, it does place added onus on the parent to make decisions about their child’s exposure. This responsi-bility is not unlike that faced by par-ents at home, or teachers at publically funded schools. It is a function of a changing world, of which the library plays just a small part.

I encourage all parents to set limita-tions for their children. I also hope that all children will be given the opportu-nity to be inspired by the amazing world of stories and wisdom that our library provides through our storytell-ing programs, Summer Reading Club, and extensive, free collections of books and resources.

Several years ago I facilitated a course for seniors entitled “Lost your marbles? Or just your memory?” There may be a few people who still remem-ber it! The intent of the course was to help us all feel more comfortable about forgetting, rather than getting all upset and embar-rassed. And we had a lot of laughs, too. Here are a few of the things we learned — a mini refresher course!

•What is memory? All of our knowl-edge from Day 1, records of emotions and feelings, how-to skills, records of sensory perceptions — all packed into the filing cabinet/computer of the left brain.

•When we forget, we tend to blame ourselves. It’s really important to keep ourselves from letting forgetfulness eat away at our self-confidence. Laughter, even when forced, tends to suppress the flow of adrenaline that happens when we are embarrassed.

•Lists free our memory, help us orga-nize our time, rehearse information, help us pay attention to what we want to remember. And using yellow paper to list things on in easier to see in case we misplace it.

•Why we forget: Heads would burst with useless information if we didn’t forget, so much forgetting is necessary. Doesn’t that make us feel better?

•Remember, each of us is a unique person. Society tends to stereotype “middle-aged”, the “elderly” and “senior citizens” but we are not all the same. We don’t have to be set in our ways, forgetful or absentminded.

Ability and inter-est to not turn off at 55! Memory changes do occur, but at different ages, rates and intensities — very individual.

• C h a n g i n g pace is also very individual, both physi-cally and mentally. We do slow down but at no specific time. We can still do many of the things we have always done — it just takes longer. Forgetting can be frustrating, but it doesn’t mean we’re falling apart. We avoid wasted energy when we accept the slowing down process; it allows us time to stop and smell the roses!

•Mental powers, like the muscles of the body, need exercising. They can be developed and strengthened, or they can simply atrophy and die for want of use.

•”Senility” is a catchword used to label any eccentric behaviour in an older person. Since the subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between reality and fantasy, reinforcing the idea of senility will tell the subconscious that we really are senile!

•Speed of reaction and recognition

often slows, but older people are often better at problem solving, reasoning and vocabulary than younger ones.

•The capacity to learn does not decrease with age, but mood, self-confidence and desire deeply affect the ability to learn. Older people are more selective in learning than young-er people, since we are perhaps more interested in conserving energy and dwelling on what is interesting, useful and pleasurable. Saying, “I can’t learn,” becomes a self-fulfilling proph-ecy. Don’t overload, take your time, take breaks, ask questions.

•Keep a positive attitude. It helps supply energy for remembering. Let go, relax, take the pressure off. Taking more control over our lives is important at any age, and keeping control is even more important as we grow older.

•Self-worth and self-acceptance — accept weaknesses, as well as strengths. Accept yourself as an indi-vidual. Self-worth controls outlook on life and affects memory. Be good to yourself. Put things in perspective. Find alternatives. Grow, search, change and laugh!

There is so much more, but there’s only so much space in this column, so we’ll call it quits for now. Love life to its fullest and give yourself lots of new memories!

Things are ticking along at the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS) with all programs going. Well, we did have to make some changes as our dear TAPS big bus, which has served us so well since 2010 but ran out of steam recently. Many decisions and rescheduling are underway to continue serving our seniors. Hats off to the flexible and creative minds at Valley Community Ser-vices and TAPS staff and volun-teers as they meet this challenge. The fundraising efforts of the Krafty Kronys contributed to the purchase of our buses and one is even named after Patt Robicheau, whose leadership inspired their efforts that continue on today.

This month we completed a previ-ously mentioned 16-week program called Moving Along Together for peo-ple with memory changes and their caregivers. This was funded by a Columbia Basin Trust social grant and was very well received by participants with strong recommendations as a much-needed program.

It’s a mouthful: Multigenerational and Intergenerational Connections is our yearlong program bringing seniors and youth together. By meeting and sharing histories and memories and working together in documenting

them, it’s proving to be a popular and engaging program. As well as visual arts, they are working on a play and recorded histo-ries, and I hear there’s a dance in the works. Thanks to Mike Poznikoff for dis-

playing one of the projects by the seniors and Grizzly Bear Out of School Care youth at Creston Card and Stationery. Students from Wildflower and TAPS seniors will be performing at Crest View Village and Swan Valley Lodge. Funding for this program came through the New Horizons for Seniors Program — Employment and Social Development Canada.

I dropped in on the Tuesday Strummers Group last week, as well as the Thursday band and choir, and found myself seduced by the nostalgic sweet-ness of the music and voices singing the old familiar tunes. Thanks again to

Joanna Wilson volunteering her musical skills on a regular basis.

OK, we’ve had our fun over the summer plotting, planning and staging photo shoots, we’ve pored over the photos reminiscing and imagining the titles, and very soon you will be able to get one (or two or…). Our 2016 TAPS fundraising calendar will soon be avail-able around town: at Kingfisher Used Books, Creston Card and Stationery and Black Bear Books, and of course through us at TAPS.

Thanks to the Blossom Valley Singers for inviting us to provide refreshments at their Christmas concert — see you at intermission Dec. 11 and 13.

We’re thinking of Ann Hepher and her family and join them in remember-ing Peter Hepher, who passed away at 94 on Nov. 6. As the 2014 citizen of the year, he was honoured then for the sig-nificant contributions he made to our community. He wrote columns for The Voice of Experience in the Advance and was a board member on the Creston-Kootenay Foundation which benefits so many of us in the Creston Valley. Thanks, Peter. Your wisdom lives on through your life’s work.

One of the behind the scenes happenings that you may not be aware of is the meeting between programming staff and our cus-tomer service representatives (CSRs) each time prior to the release

of the leisure guide. While there is pretty constant communication between programming and front end staff every day, this summit is the platform to go over all pro-grams and special events in the upcoming guide, in this case the winter leisure guide, to be released around the end of November. Being as we are open a pretty wide span of hours, we have to schedule the meeting for 6 a.m. to try and squeeze as much info and dialogue in before we have to open the front desk at 8 a.m. (I always tiptoe in, politely say good morning and scuttle off to my office as not to cre-ate a disturbance in the Force.)

The importance of our CSRs being well informed can’t be under-stated; they are our front line and

their smiling faces are the first thing you see when you walk in the door. Typically they have a better idea on what is happening overall in the building than perhaps an individu-al department, and hopefully have

most answers, or at least know how to get the answers, when a patron stops at the front. The small town advantage also plays a part as we may get to know you through your use of the facility as well as services, and sometimes can suggest a program or event that might pique your interest. Another advantage might be with a drop-in class where attendees

are not documented and an instruc-tor is suddenly sick or stuck at home, CSRs often remember who the regulars are and subsequently can do some last-minute phoning to save a trip to town for some folks.

There is a lot to know. For exam-ple, between general programming, aquatics and fitness, we had 176 programs offered this fall, which did not include any special events, child-minding services, birthday parties, public skating or swim-ming. You can see there is a lot to be aware of so if there is an error in a barcode or program location, CSRs are the first to hear about it and, depending on circumstances, are the first to have to solve it.

Customer service isn’t any differ-ent at any other business or restau-

rant; the customer ser-vice rep is usually the first point of contact, whether it is a waitress, dental receptionist, lumber store worker, gas station attendant or retail store clerk. They set the first impression, so having the knowl-edge to be able to answers questions or assist in some manner, in my opinion, is one of the main pillars of cus-tomer service. Which, if you Google pillars of customer service, you will find there are four or seven or 12 or six or five depending which website you visit. Suffice it to say, it is an important part of keep-ing a roof over the head of your business.

To the Editor:(Re: “Walk-in clinic would

lessen ER waits”, Oct. 29)I am in total support of

Sheila Watson’s suggestion as to how a walk-in clinic would benefit Creston. It would defi-nitely take away the long wait time for people with minor ailments and allow the doc-tors there to treat the emer-gency patients, which is what hospital emergency rooms are supposed to be used for.

We had lived in Creston for quite a while, and our kids went to school here. At that time we all had family doctors and dentists — no problem. But we’ve been gone eight years and moved back one year ago, and things have cer-tainly changed. We now both have doctors (my husband only in the last two months because a new doctor arrived)

and were informed Friday that we both have a dentist.

We lived in Castlegar, Cranbrook and Nelson prior to moving back here. There was no problem getting a doctor or dentist in these small communities.

Nelson, where we recently moved from, is a small, rural, isolated, community like Creston. But, there was no problem getting a doctor or dentist there, and Nelson also has two walk-in clinics to serve the community. We both had to use these walk-in clin-ics on a few occasions even though we had family doctors. These walk-in clinics certainly were of great benefit and, as Sheila said, they are a first come, first served clinic — but you find out the wait time and then you can leave your name and come back later. It worked out so well for patients, as well as the doctors.

My experience with the hos-pital in Creston, when we first moved here, was not positive at all. I did not yet have a fami-ly doctor, so I had to go use the hospital emergency room. About twice a year, I need to have my ears flushed out. My ear canals are a bit twisted and this is the only solution to clear them. The pressure from the

wax buildup causes earaches and headaches. Twice a year, that’s all. So, I went to the hos-pital and waited three hours to see the doctor. I understood it could be a long wait, and I accepted that. I finally saw a doctor and explained what needed to be done, a procedure that takes a few minutes. She refused to flush my ears. Refused. I waited three hours. She said she’d send me to a specialist. Are you kidding me? I am 61 years old and I think I know what needs to be done. I’ve had this done for years. No, she refused.

My only option now was to go to Nelson to a walk-in clinic. That isn’t fair. So, I waited until the next day and went to the hospital again, and there was a different doctor on. I waited two hours this time. This doctor could see what needed to be done, and flushed my ears, releasing the pressure that was causing my earache and headache, and that was that. It took a few minutes and all was well. So, now I had taken up two doctors’ time for a simple procedure that could have been treated at a walk-in clinic.

What is it that many people find so fascinating about trains? Probably the fascinations are as different as the mountains are diverse. Then, some people’s fascination with trains has more to do with being taken up with how some people can be so captivated by trains. It can start very early in life.

I recall the little story relayed by a grandmother who lived across the road from the railway track along Northwest Boulevard in Creston. Her daughter would come for a sev-eral-day visit bringing the two-year-old grandson along. Well, after that, when the train horn woke him up, he was wide awake and standing on his bed looking out the window calling, “Train, train train,” every night for the remainder of the visit. He would watch it until the caboose was gone. (In case you

didn’t notice, there are no lon-ger cabooses.)

The lives of many individu-als, to one degree or another, were connected with the railroad in some way. One individual, when watching the train run along the track at the Creston Museum model railway, exclaimed how the railway track ran by their Prairie farm, and when the train would pass, the engineer would blow the whis-tle. In those days, the locomo-tives were all steam engines and the kids could tell by the way the whistle was blown which engi-neer it was. Of course, it would have been almost discourteous not to wave to the engineer or to the man in the caboose who was leaning out the window, giving a big wave.

Some people are not at all fascinated about trains. They may only take notice when they

are held up at a railway crossing. In fact, they could care less except when they get woke up in the night by the loud diesel horns. I guess the reason that the horn is so loud and that they blow several times for each crossing is because too many people have been on a crossing or on the

track at the wrong time. Others, who live by the railway track, when asked if the train went by they say, “Oh, was there a train? I didn’t hear it.”

The person who thought of putting a flange on wagon wheels to keep them on a track with wooden rails had quite an influence on transportation worldwide for over 200 years. I know that the fact that trains stay on the track for thousands of miles has to do with those flanged wheels; thus it is mainly mechanical, but I am still fasci-

nated with the fact that trains of up to 100 cars or more, transport-ing wheat for overseas shipment from Portland, Ore., seldom derail. To help prevent derail-ments some railway lines have a sort of greasing device at inter-vals along the track. A “push button” device next to the rail pumps a shot of grease into a channel or flange-way each time a wheel passes over it. So, a bit of grease gets on the flange, lubri-cating the rail as it goes along. This device helps keep the train wheels from “climbing” the rail and derailing, and also cuts down some of the squealing on the curves.

There are several aspects about trains that are basically absent from highway driving. One is that the train doesn’t wave back and forth like a car going down the highway. However, there is a rare phe-nomenon that takes place when a certain railway car, like a large tanker, at certain speeds begins a “harmonic roll”. Rolling from side to side, they have been known to leave the track without damaging the track or derailing the car ahead or behind. I think the solution is to vary the speed of the train in areas of the line vulnerable to this kind of phenomenon.

One aspect I like about riding on trains is that I can enjoy the scenery while not having to be concerned about staying on the “highway”. Although the trains generally follow transportation routes followed by highways, they do divert at times through different landscapes. I remember once travelling from Banff to Revelstoke. Somewhere on the west side of the Rockies the train slowed down and I could distin-guish individual plants. One that I will never forget was a healthy

clump of the large-flowered lady’s slipper orchid. Well, I could go on.

Today there aren’t as many oppor-tunities to ride a train, but if you make a little trip to the Creston Museum, you can watch all kinds of trains going here and there and imag-ine you are standing in the vestibule between two passenger cars listening to the wheels go clickity clack as the

train moves over the joins in the rails. But you could miss the train unless you are there at the Creston Museum Model Railroad open house, where you are welcome to be, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 22. That is just three days or less away!

I’m a collector of local art — not because I want to fill every available space on my walls and shelves, but because I like what the artists in our area are producing. And what better venue to view fine art than the Images art show and sale on Nov. 21 and 22!

All your favourites will be on display: Karen Arrowsmith’s

elegant watercolours of moun-tains, valleys and Kootenay Lake, Ute Bachinski’s vibrant pastels of valley grandeur and detailed watercolours of garden produce, and Gunda Stewart’s wood-fired pottery, with excit-ing forms and glazes you can envision on your table. Eileen Hirota will display her richly surfaced intuitive semi-abstract

paintings, and James McDowell will impress you with his eclec-tic and heartwarming painted subjects in oil and acrylic.

Elaine Alfoldy will delight you with her colourful “farm lady” images and landscapes painted within our valley in watercolour.

Images show returning with new artwork

Due to unforeseen circumstanc-es, the date of the next opera show-ing at the Creston Valley Public Library has been moved forward by one week and is now scheduled for Nov. 21. Now for the good news: Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini will still be shown.

Cio-Cio-san, or Butterfly, is Japanese and falls in love with an American Navy lieutenant, Pinkerton. A marriage ceremony takes place in Japan despite adverse warnings from the U.S. consul. According to Japanese law, Pinkerton can annul the marriage at will. Butterfly is 15 and her fam-ily renounces her. As she weeps, Pinkerton comforts her and Act 1 ends with a touch-ing love scene.

Act 2 depicts Butterfly discussing their dire financial straits with her faithful maid, Suzuki. The U.S. consul attempts to persuade Butterfly to accept the mar-riage proposal of the wealthy Prince Yamadori. Butterfly remains steadfast in her love for Pinkerton and reveals that a son has been born from their union. She sings one of opera’s most beautiful

arias, “One Fine Day”. Meanwhile, Pinkerton has annulled his mar-riage to Butterfly and taken an American wife. The conclusion is very sad.

Madama Butterfly is based on a story written in 1898 by John Luther Long. In 1900, a play by Peter Belasco was seen in New York and London, where Puccini saw it. His opera premiered Feb. 17, 1904, at La Scala in Milan, Italy, but rehearsal time had been inad-equate and it was poorly received, but found success after Puccini revised the score.

Madama Butterfly begins at 7 p.m. Nov. 21. All are welcome and there is no charge. There are plans to show The Nutcracker Dec 12. For details, call Julie at 250-428-7097.

Andy Alfoldy will be there with his evocative watercolour landscapes and depictions of life, both human and animal. Carol Schloss will show her colourful pastels of rural life and landscape, captured beau-tifully by her experienced eye.

Andrea Revoy is the guest art-

ist showing with Images for the first time. Viewers are delighted her whimsical and happy cre-ations. Be ready to really enjoy and consider her well-designed detailed clay works.

I’m happy to say I own work by many of these artists. I learned a lesson about purchas-ing artwork several years ago, when I fell in love with a Phyllis Margolin watercolour at a Crawford Bay gallery. Thinking I was too poor to buy it, I left it

there, hanging on the wall. Someone else has it now and is enjoying the autumn moodiness of it, the hues of gold and rust and the stormy Kootenay sky. I made a bad decision that day and I’ve always regretted it.

Try not to make the same mistake. Visit Images at Rotacrest Hall and open your-self up to the prospect of owing your own piece of original art.

ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

Along with six others, Creston’s Robert Hynes and Penny Karpowich received a St. John Ambulance Lifesaving Award by the Alberta council for assisting at a Crawford Bay plane crash last year.

On Aug. 30, 2014, a number of people were on the Kokanee Spring Golf Resort course when they witnessed a plane crash into a line of trees while it

attempted to land at the airport. The small plane was extensively damaged and on fire. Rescuers rushed to help the pilot and pas-sengers. Only minutes after the two casualties were removed from the wreckage, the plane exploded.

Despite CPR and emergency first aid being administered at the scene, the passenger did not regain consciousness. Without the lifesaving efforts of the many people who administered first

aid to keep the severely burned pilot from succumbing to his injuries, a second life would have been lost. For their knowl-edge and use of first aid in sav-ing and attempting to save a life. Penny and Robert received their awards in October.

St. John Lifesaving Awards are presented every year to those courageous individuals who go out of their way to help others in desperate need of help — often very dangerous situations.

SASQUATCH

Gerhard and the Missing Links are looking forward to their Nov. 28 concert (postponed from Oct. 24) at the Sasquatch as they present a familiar and eclectic mix of music spanning sev-eral decades and a few countries.

Well known around the Creston Valley, the upbeat and entertaining group is made up of Gerhard Link, Neil Ostafichuk, Mike Mitchell and Keith Brookfield.

Putting the Link in the Missing Links, Gerhard plays acoustic and electric guitars along with lead vocals, Ostafichuk picks up the bass guitar to cover the lower register, Mitchell playing per-cussion on suitcases, wavedrum and bongo cajon, and Brookfield lays some steady beats on the drum kit.

Tickets are available in advance at Buffalo Trails Coffee House, Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books, and at the door, which opens at 6 p.m.; the Nov. 28 show starts at 7. Teens receive a special $8 rate only at the door.

Lucky

Grooming Boarding

I'm just over a year old and am a neutered male. I'm shy and would do better with a quiet home. If you think it would be nice to have a chill cat like me, you should check me out. I would be suitable as an inside/outside* cat due to my origin.

*PAWS cats are normally indoor only; Lucky is an exception due to his upbringing.

Thunder Cats host and beat Leafs, DynamitersBY BRIAN LAWRENCE

Advance Editor

After breaking out of a losing streak last weekend, the Creston Valley Thunder Cats kept on winning this weekend, defeating the Nelson Leafs and Kimberley Dynamiters before losing 5-4 in overtime to the Fernie Ghostriders.

The five points helped the Thunder Cats remain in second place in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, their 30 points eight behind the Dynamiters’ 38, and six ahead of the Ghostriders and Columbia Valley Rockies, tied for third with 24.

The Thunder Cats started the scoring in Friday’s 5-1 victory over the Leafs with first-period goals by Jayden Smith, Alec Wilkinson and Carson Cartwright. Sebastian Kilcommons scored a second-period goal and Jackson Bruce-Fuoco scored on a third-period power play before Nelson responded with a single goal with 4:10 remaining in the game.

“Overall, it was a complete effort,” said head coach Jeff Dubois.

He credited the efforts of goalie Brock Lefebvre, who blocked 32 Nelson shots, and the line of Wilkinson, Cartwright and Logan Styler.

“They combined for eight points between the three of them,” he said.

Saturday’s game was the second time the Thunder Cats had played against Kimberley this season, the first time resulting in a 4-0 loss. This time, they started with goals by Tyler Severson, Jayden Smith and James Severs (power play) before Kimberley responded at 5:49 in the first period. Dylan Hogue fol-lowed that with another Creston goal. After a Dynamiters goal in the second

period, Hogue scored again. The line of Hogue, Liam Plunkett and

Nicholas Kovacik “had probably their best game of the season,” with Kovacik and Plunkett each getting two assists.

“They were tasked with playing against Kimberley’s top line,” said Dubois. “To not only do a good job defen-sively, but also give us a couple of real momentum-turning goals, it was real good performance from those three.”

The Doug Birks Division-leading Kamloops Storm visited Sunday, and “they really took it to us the first five or so minutes of the game,” said Dubois.

Kamloops scored early, with goals by Cartwright and Jake Livingstone follow-ing, and an unassisted goal by Hogue in the second period giving the Thunder

Cats a 3-1 lead. Third-period play was back and forth, with a Kamloops goal, then a Creston goal by Plunkett and two goals by the Storm tying the score 4-4. Kamloops won the game by scoring on a breakaway in double overtime.

Dubois again cited Lefebvre as a key player, blocking 39 Storm shots.

“There were points where he defi-nitely held us in there,” he said.

This weekend, the Thunder Cats host the Sicamous Eagles, on Friday, then visit the Golden Rockets on Sunday. The Rockets are at the bottom of the Eddie Mountain Division with five points.

“They were in a long losing streak last time we saw them, and they just got their first win of season this weekend,” said Dubiois.

Jennifer HuscroftCreston’s Jayden Smith slips past Nelson Leafs Ren Mason and Levi Hulston.

PCSS boys hosting E.K. volleyball championshipsSUBMITTED

A tournament victory in Fernie highlights tune-up events for the Prince Charles Secondary School Bulldogs heading into the senior boys’ volleyball zone finals this week-end in Creston.

PCSS topped a Fernie field that featured all their main East Kootenay counterparts, beating the host Falcons in a thrilling three-set battle in the champion-ship match Oct. 24.

The Falcons’ lineup includes several former students of Jaffray Elementary/Junior Secondary School, which has been the PCSS boys’ primary rival over the past several seasons in the bantam and junior divisions, making the triumph especially sweet.

PCSS rolled into the final match with a second-best 4-1 record in the six-team tourna-ment, avenging a preliminary round-robin loss to Fernie, which topped the standings at 5-0.

PCSS posted round-robin vic-tories over Selkirk of Kimberley, David Thompson of Invermere, Sparwood and Elkford to earn a berth in the final.

The title is the Bulldogs’ only one of the season so far, but there were a couple of close calls else-where in the East Kootenay and hopes are high for the zone finals Friday and Saturday where only the David Thompson Lakers and Selkirk Storm stand in the path of a trip to Langley for the AA pro-

vincial championships in early December.

PCSS encountered both those opponents in other tournaments at Kimberley and Mt. Baker sec-ondary in Cranbrook, with posi-tive results. The Bulldogs reached the semifinals of both events before falling just short of the finals, and losing tightly contest-ed, three-set matches in the con-solation finals to decide third and fourth places.

In Cranbrook this past week-end, the Creston squad split its opening day matches on Friday, downing Fernie and being edged by the host Mt. Baker Wild in a pair of three-setters.

The trend continued the next day when all three of the Bulldogs’ best-of-three set matches went the distance, beginning with a victory over Selkirk that started with an opening set loss before they rallied to win two straight.

A promising semifinal start against Sparwood saw PCSS win the first set before dropping the next two, putting them in the consolation final against Fernie where they battled back from a 1-0 deficit to force a third set that ultimately went to the Falcons.

On Nov. 6 and 7 in Kimberley, meanwhile, the Bulldogs posted victories over both the Storm and Lakers en route to the semifinals, offset only by a close 2-0 loss to Mt. Baker.

Fernie beat PCSS 2-0 in the semifinals and Sparwood took a 2-1 victory to claim third place.

SubmittedPCSS Bulldogs senior volleyball team (from left, back row): coach Rick Czar, Braeden Holland and coach Doug Dortman; (middle row) Andrew Armstrong, Jordin Czar, Mitchell Bell and Jamond Dortman; and (front row) Marcus Bell, Makaiah Gorham, John Sommerfeld and Darien Bergman.

The Bulldogs also competed in a season-opening tournament in Kelowna on Oct. 16 and 17, acquitting themselves well in winning two of five matches against stiff competition from

throughout the Lower Mainland and Southern Interior.

The PCSS senior squad, coached by Rick Czar and Doug Dortman, features Grade 12 students Darien Bergman,

Mitchell Bell, Andrew Armstrong, Jordin Czar, Jamond Dortman and Braeden Holland, plus Grade 11 students Makaiah Gorham, Marcus Bell and John Sommerfeld.

“I have always been active in the church,” she said. “Mainly in the youth ministry, study groups and retreats.”

In 2000, she was ordained as a minister and soon afterward moved to Hazelton, which is situated on the infamous Highway of Tears, Highway 16. Her connections in the govern-ment were useful, and she helped organize annual pro-tests in which people would stand alongside the highway holding photographs of the murder victims.

“That got a lot of attention, and that’s all we wanted.”

Later, in Victoria, she would run a street ministry, working with poor and homeless people in the inner city. Most recently she and her husband lived in Comox and she worked part-time for a small congregation an hour’s drive away.

“My husband and I moved to Comox to care for my mother, who had Alzheimer’s,” Ashby said. “We moved in to keep her in her home as long as we could.”

In the small community of Cedar, where she worked week-ends, she ran what she describes as “a little experiment.”

She and the congregation worked together to create a com-munity that doesn’t need clergy.

“I guess you could say I was doing myself out of a job,”

she laughed. “That’s how I got to Creston!”

The call to take over as min-ister of Trinity United Church offered a certain level of com-fort. For many years the Ashbys spent summer vacations in the area, where they pursued their love of fishing.

“The best bass I’ve ever had came out of Duck Lake!”

Small town life has an appeal.

“It’s a huge draw. It’s how I thrive.”

She was offered the choice of turning down the position here after the fire, but she didn’t even consider not taking the job.

“The fire? Maybe it’s why I’m here, to bring my sheep back into the fold,” she said. “We are working together and developing trust — we are all in this together.”

While Sunday services are being held in the Anglican Church, the congregation has no place to call its own, no ideal venue to host its Wednesday

lunches, Bible studies and other activities that members enjoy. The disruption in routines has not been easy.

“Everybody processes grief in different ways,” Ashby said.

It has been five years or more since the Ashbys came to the Creston Valley to camp but the sense of familiarity is welcome.

“I still recognize places. Creston Valley Bakery is still here with its amazing bread!”

With a temporary office space close to the bakery on 10th Avenue North she is get-ting to know the congregation (and community) and its needs, but the church’s short-term future is far from clear. Insurance companies are work-ing to get the restoration going and remediation of items is expensive because there is asbestos in the building.

“Finding a (temporary) place is proving to be ridicu-lously difficult,” she admitted. “We need to come together, but where? There are many empty spaces, but none with a kitch-en, which is more important than a pulpit!”

While moving to a commu-nity with no church in place has its challenges, Ashby said she has no regrets.

“People have been really sweet and very supportive, and thank goodness for that,” she smiled. “People help each other out — that’s just what they do. There is a kindness here that is not just a way of living, it’s a way of being.”

Ministerfrom page 1

“There are many empty spaces, but none with akitchen, which is more importantthan a pulpit!”

Lorne EckersleyRev. Paula Ashby, the new Trinity United Church minister, ventured out into the rain to pose with her muppet Pamela, her counselling partner when work-ing with children and elderly people. The two cheerful and enthusiastic red-heads are excited by the challenge in Creston, where the congregation is struggling to carry on in the temporary absence of its church, which was damaged by fire in August.
