Welcome to the Crested Butte News’ guide to the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. In the following pages you will find everything you need to know about the race, including

maps, road closures, the best places to watch, a glossary of racing terms and much more.

The race

IS oNImagine this: five Colorado State patrol cars leading

the USA Pro-cycling Challenge (UPCC) peloton—includ-ing every podium placer from this year’s Tour de France—out of Salida and over Monarch Pass. That’s 135 riders followed by 120 team vehicles, all racing into Gunnison around 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23—a mere hour and a half after the 11:45 a.m. start in Salida, the same amount of time Google Maps calculates a car would travel the same distance.

In other words? They’ll be hauling, and they’ll be heading straight for Crested Butte.

Once the State Patrol hits Almont, sometime between 2 and 2:30 p.m., every road in Crested Butte will close, including the racecourse along Highway 135. Traffic will literally come to a halt to make way for a peloton reaching 60 miles an hour—but Crested Butte will not.

Spectators and locals alike will find a full-on biking bonanza to celebrate the arrival of America’s toughest bike race. Racers will scream through town at 50 miles an hour with only one inch of rubber between them and the asphalt. But locals will showcase their favorite bikes—Townies, of course—in a Townie Crit through downtown Crested Butte.

A sanctioned hand-cycling race will follow suit after the Townies, and up on the mountain, a finish festival will celebrate biking with vendors, a strider cup and a Taste of the Town featuring local restaurants.

Beer gardens and jumbotrons will make it easy to watch the race from downtown or on the mountain, for the kiddos there will be a Strider cup and play area on the mountain.

gettINg to CreSted BUtteArrive early! Highway 135 and the

roads in Crested Butte are expected to close sometime between 2 and 2:30 p.m.—as soon as the racers reach Almont.

Plan on parking in the Crested Butte Community School parking lot and walking or taking the bus from there. If the parking lot is full, parking will be directed to the East side of Highway 135/6th Street.

Note: The RTA bus from Gunnison to Crested Butte plans to run its normal sched-ule, but the evening bus might not be able to go to Mt. Crested Butte.

gettINg AroUNd CreSted BUtteDriving will be extremely limited. Plan

to walk, bus or bike. The action will be centered around the

sprint line just outside of Maxwell’s Steak-house and the Brick Oven. You can’t miss it: just look for 20-foot inflatable pylons and the beer garden in the Post Office parking lot.

Elk Avenue will be closed all day. At 10:45 a.m., 5th and 2nd Avenue will closed between Whiterock and Elk, and so will Whiterock between 5th and 2nd. All roads will be closed between 2 p.m. and the finish of the race.

Mountain Express will run on an alter-nate route and schedule (see page 29) gettINg to Mt. CreSted BUtte

Park in Crested Butte and ride! Leave your car in the Crested Butte Community

School parking lot. Overflow parking will be directed to the east side of town. Mt. Crested Butte parking is extremely limited.

Get in the spirit of the race and ride your bike up the rec path. A secure bike valet is available outside the Grand Lodge for $2, and all proceeds benefit the Local Organizing Committee.

Mountain Express Shuttles will run to and from Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte (see page 29). Plan on catching a shuttle early to make it to the mountain before racers come through.

Service will be suspended during the race and resume once roads re-open. There will be no road closures on the rec path, so ride your bike for the most flexibility.

gettINg AroUNd Mt. CreSted BUtte

Starting at 5 a.m. all traffic will be escorted by a patrol car from the intersection of Gothic and Snowmass Rd to the intersec-tion of Gothic and Treasury. Escorted traffic will be rerouted off of Gothic, through the lot north of the Grand Lodge to Emmons and Treasury roads. Traffic will travel one direction at a time, so expect delays.

All activities are centered around the finish, which is on Gothic just south of Trea-sury. Walking is the best way to take in the festival, which includes a special Taste of the Town, a beer garden, a live entertainment stage and Jumbotrons to watch coverage of the race.

GettinG to Gunnison from Crested Butte on AuGust 24All Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte roads will be open. Expect heavy

traffic as racers drive from Mt. Crested Butte to Gunnison around 8:30 a.m. Town Marshals will help direct traffic in town.

The race starts in Gunnison at 10 a.m. and the course follows Highway 135 until Almont. Rolling closures between Gunnison and Almont will be in effect from approximately 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

GettinG to Cottonwood PAssCottonwood Pass is arguably the most talked about spot to watch the race.

The County will close to vehicles and bike traffic the day before Stage 2, on August 23, to make sure it’s in prime condition. Plan ahead by signing up for a shuttle from Western State College at 7 a.m., 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Email [email protected].

Old Californio, so called because while they don’t try to intentionally recall an earlier time in music history where California had a unique sound of its own, Old Californio certainly harkens back to it. It should be a great Alpenglow, perhaps touching on memories of the older generations and sparking some new ones for the younger folk. The sound crosses quite a few generations, and that’s what Alpenglow is all about!

Kick off the day Crested Butte style by participating in the much-antic-ipated return of the Townie Criterium! Watch or participate as racers speed around town, and through the legendary Talk of the Town on their most coveted bikes of all; their townie bikes. As with all great events in Crested Butte, costumes encouraged! Rumor has it that Ben Preston has been do-ing double-secret training to “defend” his long-lost title.

To participate, register on the Brick Oven deck after 10 a.m. The cost is $10.

us HAndCyClinG CriteriumTuesday, August 23 at 1 p.m.Elk Avenue Sprint Line

As a part of the U.S. Para Cycling Challenge, and in partnership with the Adaptive Sports Center, Crested Butte will host the US Handcycling Criterium on August 23. Handcyclists will participate in a 30-minute timed race on an 8/10 mile circuit. The race will start at 1 p.m. at the Sprint Line for the Pro Race (Elk Avenue between 2nd and 3rd). The competition is expected to draw 15-20 top Para Cyclists from all over the nation. Awards will take place at 1:45 p.m.

Crested Butte sPrint line Beer GArdenTuesday, August 23 from 11 a.m.-11 p.m.Crested Butte Sprint Finish Line

Enjoy libations from Sierra Nevada and Avery Brewing Company while watching the race action unfold all day on the Jumbotron. Located on the Elk Avenue Sprint line, the beer garden also boasts premier viewing of the Sprint Line, Townie Crit and US Handcycling Criterium.

From 7-10 p.m., challenge your buddies to a simulated 500 meter sprint. Participants will race side by side on stationary bikes for their own taste of victory. Spandex is optional yet encouraged.

strider CuPTuesday, August 23 at 1 p.m.Mt. Crested Butte Finish Line

Even the littlest of riders can experience the thrill of racing across the finish line. Stop by the Strider tent in the Festival to register or at the finish line 15 minutes before the race. A very limited number of bikes will be available, please bring your own to ensure a spot for your child.

Little racers can race across the finish line at 1 p.m. or on a special course within the festival throughout the entirety of the day.

In Mt. Crested Butte, the finish line will come alive with a Finish Festival including live music and a “Taste of the Town” planned from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., where you can see the race unfold via live video feeds all while enjoying beverages from Sierra Nevada. Take advantage of food and product vendors, a kids area, two Jumbotrons, beer garden, and a live music stage with multiple acts throughout the day.

The live music starts at 11:30 with the Fid-dling Foresters. Known as the “official old-time string band of the US Forest Service” the Fid-dling Foresters are a musical group composed of Forest Service employees and volunteers from the Rocky Mountain Region. Combining toe-tapping music and the message of natural resource conservation, the Foresters are sure to be fun for the whole family. Between sets, enjoy a dance performance from the Crested Butte Collective. At 1:30 p.m., Doctor Robert takes the stage. A new generation of Beatles Tribute band, Doctor Robert brings a youthful energy and fresh perspective to an amazing catalog of music.

The Finish Festivals are the highlight of the finish cities throughout the race with vendors traveling to each city.The finish festivals feature not only the latest bike technology but also a fun-filled atmosphere for the whole family to enjoy.

After the awards ceremony, make your way to the Red Lady Stage for a performance from folk/pop songstress Megan Burtt.

Burtt was recently honored as one of only six 2011 NewFolk Competition winners. She has performed at the legendary Red Rocks Ampithe-ater, shared stages with Braddigan (of Dispatch), Brendan James and Toad the Wet Sprocket, toured listening rooms, clubs, living rooms, pris-ons and military barracks and is hard at work on two side projects (Travel By Skylark and The Dance Cards) as well as her sophomore record-ing with The Cure For Love (due early 2012).

Bring your lawnchairs, family and friends and enjoy one of the last outdoor concerts in Crested Butte for the summer. Outside alcohol and pets are not allowed.

Chase the raCeWednesday, August 24 at 7 a.m.Crested Butte to Aspen

After watching the spectacular Stage 1 fin-ish in the town of Mt. Crested Butte on Tues-day, take part in the inaugural Chase the Race stage to watch the next day’s finish in down-town Aspen, CO.

On August 24, as Stage 2 of the USAPCC leaves Gunnison, CO to race over both Cot-tonwood & Independence Passes en-route to Aspen, we will follow in the tire treads of his-tory, by riding from downtown Crested Butte over historic Pearl Pass, and on into downtown Aspen to catch the Stage 2 finish. Being dubbed the Chase the Race, this event is a chance to experience the early rides of some of mountain biking’s great pioneers, like Gary Fisher, Tom Breeze, Don Cook, and more, when they used this route as one of the inspirations to help develop the beginnings of the modern day mountain bike. An annual event every Septem-ber to this day, this will be a special and unique way for cycling enthusiasts to be a part of the sports history and its future.

The take-no-prisoners 131-mile journey from Gunnison to Aspen starts at the intersection of Main Street and Virginia Avenue in Gunnison at 10 a.m.

The Queen Stage Downtown Expo kicks off in downtown Gunnison at 8 a.m., featuring an Autograph Alley with the cyclists on Tomichi Avenue and Main Street, a vendor expo and a pre-start program complete with color guards, local cycling heroes and the national anthem. Craft your own crown, channel your excitement with a cowbell to send off the riders in style, and stick around to watch the drama of stage two unfold on the jumbotron at IOOF Park through-out the day. Before approximately 2 p.m., drivers heading north will use 1st and Maroon to get to Gothic Road and will use the Nordic Center parking lot (ac-cessed from 2nd and Whiterock) to get to southbound Hwy. 135.

County Road 742 Taylor River Road, will close at 8:30 a.m. at George Bailey Drive (just past Three Rivers Resort). The road will close at the inter-section of Taylor River and Hwy. 135 at 9:15 a.m. Expected closure is until 1 p.m.

Cottonwood Pass will be closed to all traffic except the Western State College Shuttles until notification is received from race officials that it can be opened.

Mountain Express Town Shuttle will experience route diversions and unknown schedule delays on Monday and Tuesday, August 22 and 23 due to the 2011 Pro Cycling Chal-lenge.

In anticipation of the day, Moun-tain Express is working with officials from the towns of Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte as well as the local Pro Cycling Challenge committee to offer the best possible service during the event. In addition to this informa-tion, they will update the website at www.mtnexp.org as details become available.

The main thing to know is that the Town Shuttle will be running in full force to get you to Mt. Crested Butte for the festivities. People are strongly encouraged to take the bus as public parking in Mt. Crested Butte will be in low supply. Public parking will be available at the Crested Butte Community School and the streets on the east side of 6th Street.

On August 23, starting with the first bus at 7:40 a.m. from 6th and Belleview, the Town Shuttle will not service the downtown Crested Butte stops, which include Old Town Hall, the Nordic Center and Whiterock Avenue.

The shuttle will come into Crested Butte from Mt. Crested Butte and stop at Teocalli and the Four-way Stop. It will proceed to Belleview and turn right, then make an immediate left on 6th Street. A temporary stop

for the duration of the race will be on the northwest corner of 6th and Bel-leview. As long as possible, the Town Shuttle will run on time. Once the racers begin to roll into Crested Butte, the Town Shuttle will be subject to unknown delays.

On August 23, starting with the 10 a.m. departure from 6th and Bel-leview, the Town Shuttle will service the parking lot at the CBCS parking lot and 8th Street. It will turn left on Elk and proceed to the Four-way Stop as usual.

On August 22 and 23, starting with the first bus leaving Mountaineer Square at 8 a.m., the Town Shuttle will not service Three Seasons, Outrun, Chateaux and Marcellina until they are given notice on August 23 that the route is clear. Additionally, since this leg of the route is eliminated, they will arrive and depart Pitchfork early. For example, if the Shuttle leaves Mountaineer Square at 12 p.m., it will depart Pitchfork at approximately 12:02 p.m.

Wherever possible, barricades will separate you and your loved ones from the bicyclists racing through town at 60 miles an hour. But accidents happen. A Scottish rider crashed into a dog during the first stage of this year’s Tour de France, and in 2010 a stray dog ran into the middle of the peloton and caused a multi-ple-bike pileup. Use your best judgment: leave your pups at home and keep your kids (and yourself) out of the street.

All-rounder: A racing cyclist who excels in both climbing and time trialing, and may also be a decent sprinter. In stage races, an all-rounder seeks a top-10 place in the General Classification. Eddy Merckx, Miguel Indurain and Lance Armstrong were notable all-rounders; Ivan Basso, Alejandro Valverde, Cadel Evans, Danilo Di Luca, and Alberto Contador are more contemporary examples.

Attack: To quickly accelerate while riding in a pack, or in smaller numbers, with a view to create a gap between yourself and other riders.

Autobus: A group of riders in a stage race (typically non-climbers and suffering domestiques) who ride together as a group on the mountain stages with the sole inten-tion of finishing within the stage’s time limit to allow them to start the next day.

Bonk or “Hit the Wall”: To completely run out of energy on a long ride.

Boxed in: To be positioned in a peloton or other pack of riders, regardless of size, such that one is unable to move ahead of the other rid-ers. This usually refers to the sprint where one is unable to improve one’s finish placing due to the inability to maneuver around other riders.

Breakaway: Breakaway, or break in short, is when a small group of riders or an individual have successfully opened a gap ahead of the peloton.

Cadence: The rate at which a cyclist pedals (in revolutions per minute).

Caravane: The team cars following behind the peloton in support of their racers.

Chase: A group of one or more riders who are ahead of the peloton trying to join the race or stage leader(s). There may be none, one, or many chases at any given point in a race.

Climber: A rider who specializes in riding up-hill quickly, usually due to having a high power-to-weight ratio.

Counter attack: An attack that is made when a break has been caught by chasers or the peloton.

Descender: A cyclist who excels at fast descents, often using them to break away from a group, or bridge a gap.

Domestique: A rider whose job it is to sup-port and work for other riders in their team (liter-ally “servant” in French).

Drafting: To ride closely behind another rider to make maximum use of their slipstream, reduc-ing wind resistance and effort required to ride at the same speed.

Drop: To be dropped is to be left behind a breakaway or the peloton for whatever reason (usually because the rider cannot sustain the tempo required to stay with the group). To drop

someone is to accelerate strongly with the intent of causing following riders to no longer gain the benefit of drafting.

Echelon: (French) a line of riders seeking maximum drafting in a crosswind, resulting in a diagonal line across the road.

False flat: A low-gradient climb, usually occurring partway up a steeper climb. So-called because while it may look deceptively flat and easy (especially after the steep climb preceding it), it is still a climb.

Feed zone: In road bicycle racing, a location along the course of a long race where team person-nel hand musettes containing food and beverages to passing riders. Ideally, a feed zone should be along a long, uncongested straight section of road, with a wide shoulder for team personnel and vehicles.

Gap: A distance between two or more riders large enough for drafting to no longer be effective. While gaps are usually achieved through attacks, on mountain climbs, where slower speeds means the advantage of drafting is much less significant, riders are often gapped who simply cannot main-tain the tempo of the faster riders.

Individual time trial (ITT): Race where riders set off at fixed intervals and complete the course against the clock; fastest time wins. Drafting is not allowed.

Lead out: Sprinting technique often used by the leadout man where the rider will accelerate to maximum speed close to the sprint point with a teammate, the sprinter, drafting behind, hoping to create space between the sprinter and the pack.

On the rivet: De-scribes a rider who is riding at maximum speed. When riding at maximum power output, a road racer often perches on the front tip of the saddle (seat).

Peloton: (from French, literally meaning little ball or platoon and also related to the English word pellet) is the large main group in a road bicycle race. May also be called the field, bunch, or pack. Riders in a group save energy by riding close (drafting or slipstream-ing) near and, particu-larly behind, other riders. The reduction in drag is dramatic; in the middle of a well-developed group it can be as much as 40 percent.

Prologue: A short individual time trial before a stage race, used to deter-mine which rider wears the leader’s jersey on the first stage.

Road rash: Severe

skin abrasions caused from sliding on the asphalt in a crash.

Sag wagon: Support motor vehicle following long races or recreational rides to pick up riders un-able to complete the event.

Sprinter: Rider with the ability to generate very high power over short periods (a few seconds to a minute) allowing for great finishing speeds, but usually unable to sustain sufficiently high power over long periods to be a good time trialist, and is usually too big to have a high enough power-to-weight ratio to be a good climber.

Stage: One part of a multi-day race, such as the USA Pro Cycling Chal-lenge.

Time Trial: A race against the clock where riders are started sepa-rately (ranging from 30 seconds to 5 minutes apart). The winner of the race is determined by the fastest person across the course. No drafting may be employed in a time trial as it is a solo race event.

Wall: A steep incline along a race’s course.
