Welcome to our 15th annual on farm sale! It seems like yesterday we were preparing for our first sale. A lot has changed over the years. Our family has grown up and some have left to follow their dreams. I think back to when the sale help would be content with a

beverage after the sale to now wanting to sit in the stands with their young families. 2013 marks sixty years of purebred cattle at Crescent Creek. Breeding Angus cattle was never a fad around here, it was a passion started by Mike and Irene and is now being carried out by the 3rd generation. As we think back over the past 15 sales, we are very humbled by the success you, our customers, have had choosing our program. Many fine herd sires and foundation females have come out of these sales. We thank you, our cherished repeat customer base. This year’s offering is perhaps the most complete set of young bulls we have offered to date. The Chisum 6175 offering is to say the least very exciting. Chisum offers the performance and consistency of any bull we have ever used through AI. His numbers are phenomenal but the bull adds depth of body and muscle like no other. We are also very pleased to offer the bulk of our sale bulls and females sired by three home raised bulls. Bulls that we have raised the mothers of so we are very confident they will produce the type of cattle needed today. Whether you are looking for calving ease, power and performance or maternal strength, this offering has it all. As in the past, come to expect a set of bulls with large testicles, lots of muscle and meat, excellent hair, and raised by a very fine set of mama cows. As in past years, our bulls have been grown out and never “pushed”. We appreciate the fact these young bulls have to last year after year at your place. The bulls were hand fed a bull ration consisting of high

levels of protein and no barley. They were fed to achieve an average daily gain of 3 pounds. Free choice brome hay was also fed. The females were fed a rolled oats ration along with a protein pellet to achieve approximately 2 pounds of daily gain. They are not over fitted to ensure proper development as breeding females.

The vaccination program consisted of Express 5 and blackleg shots. All breeding females & bulls will have had their pre-breeding Express 5 vaccine and blackleg booster prior to the sale. The cattle have had plenty of exercise in large pens, and are very free moving.

New for this year we have acquired the services of DLMS.This will allow you to bid on the bulls via the internet. We would much sooner see you in the stands at our sale. But for some reason you cannot attend this gives you a chance to bid on the bulls at the live auction. In the event we would have another bad weather day, this could help some of you out. Please remember to pre- register with DLMS prior to the sale. You may also register sale day but preferably before. If you are planning to bid on line we suggest you come see the bulls prior to the sale. Once again we would like to see you sale day, but this does give you an option. ULTRASOUND CARCASS MEASUREMENTS

Rib Fat/Backfat: An external fat measurement taken between the 12th and13th Reported in inches. Rib fat is the main trait that affects percent lean meat yield ie; A1, A2, A3, & A4. Percent lean meat yield is the calculation that estimates the percent of lean muscle on the carcass. For example, a lean meat yield of 60% on a 1000lb carcass would have 600lbs of lean muscle and 400lbs of bone and fat.Ribeye Area (REA): An area measurement of the loin or ribeye muscle. Reported in square inches. While an increase in backfat will lower the percent lean meat yield an increase in REA will raise the percent lean meat yield.Rump Fat: An external fat measurement taken from an image collected between the hooks and the pins of the animal. Reported in inches. The rump fat measurement, coupled with the rib fat measurement will increase the accuracy of percent lean meat yield.Intramuscular Fat (%IMF)/ Marbling: This measurement determines the amount of fat within the muscle. Reported in “%”. This measurement is used to determine the quality grade of the carcass.

In order to use body composition EPD’s or ultrasound data to its full potential, a breeder must have an understanding of the ultrasound terminology. Several of the ultrasound measurements are comparable to the familiar carcass measurements. The data is simply collected on yearling bulls and heifers instead of market ready steers. Take a step back from looking at the numbers and become comfortable with the terminology.

BULL WARRANTYWe guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bull capable of servicing a reasonable number of cows. In the event that your bull is a non-satisfactory breeder the seller will not, under any circumstances, be responsible for more than the original selling price of any bull or female sold in the sale. The consignors will not provide replacement or credit for physical injury or mismanagement. Therefore we stress the importance of insurance on your bull. An insurance agent will be available on sale day.

For most commercial cattlemen, there are really only four EPDs they need to look at: birth weight (BW); weaning weight (WW); yearling weight (YW); and milk. The others, with perhaps the exception of the carcass traits, are more useful for purbred breeders. Birth weight is the best predictor of calving ease and the birth weight EPD

is more reliable than looking at the bull’s own birth weight. A bull with a 65 lb birth weight may have been born early, may be a twin or could have been born to a heifer. These sorts of things are accounted for in the EPD calculation. Weaning weight and yearling weight are easily measured performance traits. A bull with a 10 lb high weaning EPD than another bull of the same breed will sire calves that weigh an average 10 lbs more at weaning.

The milk EPD is a maternal EPD. What this means is that it is predicting the performance of the animals daughters, not the sons. The daughters of a bull calf with a +20 milk EPD would be expected to wean calbes that weigh 10 lbs more than a bull with a +10 milk EPD. Obviously, the sons don’t produce milk, but they can pass on superior traits to the next generation. If you want more milk in your herd, choose sires with higher milk EPDs. Comparing animal to animal when looking through the sale catalog is one way to use EPDs; another is to compare to the breed average usually also posted in the sale catalog. It is important to realize that the breed average does not mean that the average animal possesses that particular set of numbers rather that it is the average for each individual trait. If you are looking for a heifer bull then compare the birth weight EPDs to the average birth weight EPDs for the breed.

One of the most common mistakes I see is the tendency to focus on one trait when selecting bulls versus balanced trait selection. Cattlemen in the market for a heifer bull will focus on a calving ease breed and then look for a bull with a low birth weight EPD. Likewise, I have seen bulls selected for use on heifers with breed leading WW and YW EPDs. With the exception of what we call curve benders these traits are related. Bulls with really high WW EPDs generally have BW EPDs well above average. Determine which traits are important to you, the choose acceptable EPD ranges for those traits, and realize that tradeoffs may have to be made

This Chisum bull is very easy fleshing and easy to look at. The bulls were never pushed, but really converted feed well. His dam has some of the most prolific cows in the breed “WOS 115F” and” WOS 6R”in her pedigree. This young cow has a Fortune 425C son working at Tom Flanagan’s Sheidaghan Anghus at Maple Creek. Tom quite likes the bull. We think 17Z with his pedigree and performance can do no wrong.

Another sale feature. 16Z probably has as much thickness you can put in a yearling bull. Chisum calves are proud and eye catching. This young bulls dam is a grandaughter of “MAINEVENT 6H” who sold thru our 1st sale to Minburn Angus. 6H not only left his mark there, but

We were fortunate to have been able to purchase one of a limited semen packages being offered on this young bull. The results were excellent.

The two young bulls are outstanding and the females will make great brood cows. We used more of the semen this year on first calf heifers and the results once again excellent .

“Huck” was first purchased as a heifer bull, and what a job he did. It was amazing to see how calves with such small birth weights could actually perform as well as they did. In away we feel very fortunate to be using so many home raised herdbulls. We selected these bulls simply on the strength of their dams, and it has excelled our program even faster. 16U is a perfect example, we used this bull primarily on heifers and were surprised to see how many of them made it into the replacement pen. If you have the time we would like to show you his daughters and see why this bull will be used here for many years to come. With many milking daughters in the herd it is easy to see why this outcross bull has become a very important breeding tool for us.
