Welcome to our 14th annual on farm bull and female sale. What a change a year can make. We have gone from record snowfall and cold temperatures to a fall and winter of record high temps and no snowfall. Another positive is the attitude and bottom line of the

beef producers. Cattle prices are up to record levels, and according to every Tom, Dick and Harry, we are in for a good ride.

Once again we would like to welcome you to our sale and thank you for choosing our program as a source for your herd bulls or to select some replacement females.

As in the past years our bulls have been developed with their future as breeding bulls in mind. They have been fed a diet of rolled oats and pea screening pellets along with free choice brome hay. They were fed at a rate of gain approx. 3 lbs per day thru the feeding period. These young bulls have never been “pushed” to achieve high yearling weights, thus never compromising their ability to be good breeding bulls for many years. As in the past you will see bulls with ample growth, lots of muscle developement with large testicles. These bulls are free moving with enough age to service cows. The females were fed a diet consistning of rolled oats and a protein lick to achieve milking ability. These animals were all hand fed thus they are easy to work with. The vaccination program consists of Express 5 modified live vaccine. The sale cattle will have had their pre breeding shots along with a Black Leg booster.

As in the past come Saturday April 7th and enjoy some great hospitality, great fellowship, make some new friends, and evaluate an offering of honest cattle. Orie received his B.Ed 2 years ago and is presently teaching at North Valley High in Lemberg, SK. Dany is to receive his B Comm from the U of S in Saskatoon this Spring. He is presently employed with Richardson Pioneer in Yorkton, SK. Wade is in grade 8 at MCS in Melville. Time flies is an understatement!2

Rib Fat/Backfat: An external fat measurement taken between the 12th and13th Reported in inches. Rib fat is the main trait that affects percent lean meat yield ie; A1, A2, A3, & A4. Percent lean meat yield is the calculation that estimates the percent of lean muscle on the carcass. For example, a lean meat yield of 60% on a 1000lb carcass would have 600lbs of lean muscle and 400lbs of bone and fat.Ribeye Area (REA): An area measurement of the loin or ribeye muscle. Reported in square inches. While an increase in backfat will lower the percent lean meat yield an increase in REA will raise the percent lean meat yield.Rump Fat: An external fat measurement taken from an image collected between the hooks and the pins of the animal. Reported in inches. The rump fat measurement, coupled with the rib fat measurement will increase the accuracy of percent lean meat yield.Intramuscular Fat (%IMF)/ Marbling: This measurement determines the amount of fat within the muscle. Reported in “%”. This measurement is used to determine the quality grade of the carcass.

Several of the ultrasound measurements are comparable to the familiar carcass measurements. The data is simply collected on yearling bulls and heifers instead of market ready steers. BULL WARRANTYWe guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bull capable of servicing a reasonable number of cows. In the event that your bull is a non-satisfactory breeder the seller will not, under any circumstances, be responsible for more than the original selling price of any bull or female sold in the sale. The consignors will not provide replacement or credit for physical injury or mismanagement. Therefore we stress the importance of insurance on your bull. An insurance agent will be available on sale day.

For most commercial cattlemen, there are really only four EPDs they need to look at: birth weight (BW); weaning weight (WW); yearling weight (YW); and milk. The others, with perhaps the exception of the carcass traits, are more useful for purbred breeders. Birth weight is the best predictor of calving ease and the birth weight EPD

is more reliable than looking at the bull’s own birth weight. A bull with a 65 lb birth weight may have been born early, may be a twin or could have been born to a heifer. These sorts of things are accounted for in the EPD calculation. Weaning weight and yearling weight are easily measured performance traits. A bull with a 10 lb high weaning EPD than another bull of the same breed will sire calves that weigh an average 10 lbs more at weaning.

The milk EPD is a maternal EPD. What this means is that it is predicting the performance of the animals daughters, not the sons. The daughters of a bull calf with a +20 milk EPD would be expected to wean calbes that weigh 10 lbs more than a bull with a +10 milk EPD. Obviously, the sons don’t produce milk, but they can pass on superior traits to the next generation. If you want more milk in your herd, choose sires with higher milk EPDs. Comparing animal to animal when looking through the sale catalog is one way to use EPDs; another is to compare to the breed average usually also posted in the sale catalog. It is important to realize that the breed average does not mean that the average animal possesses that particular set of numbers rather that it is the average for each individual trait. If you are looking for a heifer bull then compare the birth weight EPDs to the average birth weight EPDs for the breed.

One of the most common mistakes I see is the tendency to focus on one trait when selecting bulls versus balanced trait selection. Cattlemen in the market for a heifer bull will focus on a calving ease breed and then look for a bull with a low birth weight EPD. Likewise, I have seen bulls selected for use on heifers with breed leading WW and YW EPDs. With the exception of what we call curve benders these traits are related. Bulls with really high WW EPDs generally have BW EPDs well above average. Determine which traits are important to you, the choose acceptable EPD ranges for those traits, and realize that tradeoffs may have to be made

We feel very fortunate to be offering some of the 1st sons to sell in Canada by the very popular Genex sire CHISUM. This outstanding performance sire caught our eye when we were looking to use some semen. He leads the breed in both performance and carcass data with a modest birth EPD. His first calves did not disapoint. We decided to drive down to Spickler Ranch in ND and see more Chisum calves. Once again we were not dissapointed. There we found a no nonsence program, raising sound functional cattle. Since there was no more semen coming into canada, we set out to purchase what semen was available. We also purchased along with our partner D Bar K Angus what we think is a very good Chisum Son (pictured bottom right). This spring we have over 30 Chisum 6175 calves on the ground. Plan to check them out, you will not be dissapointed. We feel this line of genetics is what the beef industry is looking for. These young bulls are a sample of things to come.

15W was the lead of the bull in our 2010 sale where he commanded a lot of attention from some very astute breeders. At the end of the day Bar CR Angus purchased a 1/3 interest for $26,500.00. Since then this bull has certainly proven himself worthy. As seen in his picture he has become a true breeding bull. He shows as much muscle and capacity as any bull out there. His first calf crop at both farms is exceptional. His sons are easy to find in the pen. Proud in character, chucked full of red meat his pedigree is proven and predictable. “Huck” was first purchased as a heifer bull, and what a job he did. It was amazing to see how calves with such small birth weights could actually perform as well as they did. Dynasty has surpassed all our expectations as a herd sire. His offspring are very uniform in type and consistent in quality. His sons are moderate as he is. His daughters are phenomenal; in hind sight selling our interest in the bull may have been foolish. After calving out his first daughters it doesn’t get any better. They are the model Angus cow. Moderate for frame. Udder quality seconded to none. Luckily we have semen in the tank. It was nice to see him sell to an American outfit. I believe they could use some outcross genetics again. If you are wishing to build your cow herds, these Dynasty’s will do the job.

Pacesetter is proving to be quite a valuable piece of our program. He was retained mainly for his light birth weight and exceptional maternal power. His calves have proven us right. He continues to be our light birth weight sleep easy heifer bull. His first daughters are exactly what we thought they would be. Really nice udder development and super disposition. Females We think the cattle and the cows families speak for themselves. As in the past we have dug very deep into the replacement pen. We offer you the proven cow families from our program. The Queen Ruth’s, Heroines, and the Rosebuds. It is easier to now part with the females as their numbers are increasing. These are the cow families who have year after year produced these excellent young herd bull prospects. Feel confident in your purchases as we have proven them out. We have calved out ½ sibs to them and know they can work for you because they work for us. Maternal traits are the back bone of our program and our breed.

Here is an opportunity to by ½ sisters in large groups. When we use herd bulls it is for the long haul. Offered is a cross section of our program. Remember the financing terms 60% sale day and 40% October 1st. the leave and breed option worked well for some. Dollar for dollar your best purchase will be this spring on open replacements. Next fall these females will command a hefty price.

We would like to thank the Richardsons from Ontario who ventured out and purchased some excellent females last spring. Victor reports that the females have all met their expectations, and was very satisfied with their purchases. We expected nothing less.
