Why do you need to know about credits?
Every course you pass gives you credits toward graduation!
All of the credits you earn get you get closer to your diploma!
All of the classes you take in high school will have credits!• What is a “credit”?• Based on the number of periods (or
hours) you are in a course in one week in one semester/term
Example: A class that meets 1 period a day each week (5 days per week) for 1 semester/term = 5 credits

every year
• Includes 5 credits of Oral Communication
Math• 30 credits
Including Algebra and Geometry
Science 30 credits – Including:
• Physical Science – 5 credits
• Geoscience – 5 credits• Biology – 10 credits • Chemistry – 10 credits
Social Studies30 credits – Including:• Civics – 5 credits – 9th • Geography – 5 credits – 9th • World History – 5 credits –
10th • US History – 10 credits –
11th • Government and Politics –

Physical Education• 10 credits
Fitness for Life in 9th grade – 5 credits

Take Charge:Career Readiness & Financial Responsibility
• 5 credits – 11th
Reading Proficiency• Pass RGDE
• Score at or above the 70th percentile on Reading subtest of a standardized test in 9th grade or later
• Meet specific criteria in Reading Advancement – 12th
8th Grade Counts too!
Students taking Algebra or a higher math class and/or a world language will earn high school credit for passing these classes
