With Christmas less than amonth away, conventional wisdomtells us we should already have ajump on our holiday shopping. Butmix in work, family and otherobligations that don’t go awaysimply because it’s the holidayseason, and wisdom flies out thewindow.

But with a little preplanningand careful thought, you can getthe perfect gifts for everyone onyour list.

Formulate a battle planFirst, give some serious thought

to everyone on your list. Some, likeyour kids, are easy – they’re notshy about telling you all the thingsthey want for Christmas. But oth-ers are more challenging. What doyou get for the man who has every-thing, who says “Oh, I don’t needanything” when you ask him what

he’d like? These are the ones who take a

little more work. For example, dothey have any hobbies? Are theysports fans? Do they have pets?Often, the answers to these ques-tions can help generate gift ideas.

Next, make a list. That ensuresyou won’t forget anyone and thosegreat ideas for gifts. Reminder:list everyone’s sizes and favoritecolors.

Finally, map out your route. Youcan find many one-of-a-kind giftsat local shopping districts, andyour dollars stay close to home.

help our customers findthe perfect gift to showthe special people intheir lives how muchthey mean to them.”

interactive video gamesystems such as Wii andKinect and their accesso-ries; MP3 players; ande-readers and tablet PCs.Internet-ready mobilephones are also much indemand.

» Personal gifts arealso very popular. Theseinclude books, craftitems, puzzles, desk cal-endars, and food and wineselections.

» Heirloom gifts canbe a good choice. A goodwatch or piece of jewelrycan become a treasureditem that’s passed downfrom generation to gener-ation for years of enjoy-ment.

Charge…it!Now you can hit the

stores with confidence. But in a twist, many ex-perts are recommendingyou make your gift pur-chases on credit.

Why use credit cards?“Card issuers are court-ing consumers again,”said Beverly Harzog ofCredit.com. “This is theperfect time when peopleare really looking to get adeal to make it throughthe holidays.”

Many credit card com-panies are offering extradiscounts or cash back oncredit purchases. Forexample, American Ex-press has started offeringfive times the amount ofrewards points to card-holders when they buycertain brands. And Dis-cover card members willreceive 5 percent to 10percent more cash backduring the holidays whenthey shop certain retail-ers through Discover’sShopDiscover. Anotherplus: many credit cardpurchases are covered byadditional buyer protec-tion plans.

A caveat: set a limitand stick to it, and pay offthe balance as soon as theholidays are over.

You’ve spent the entireday in the kitchen cook-ing the perfect holidaymeal. But it’s an hourbefore your guests arriveand you find yourselfstanding in front of thetable listening to thatlittle nagging voice insideyour head. Do the waterglasses go to the right orleft? What side does theknife go on? Should yougo ahead and put food onthe table before guestsarrive, or wait until ev-eryone gets there?

“We hear from somany panicked peoplethis time of year lookingfor a crash course in howto set the table and prop-er manners,” says eti-quette coach Jill Slatter.“Most of us are stretchedso thin juggling work, school and home that wedon’t have time to sitdown together for a prop-er meal except at theholidays, and then thepressure is on to be per-fect.”

Slatter is the etiquetteexpert for Greensboro,N.C.-based Replace-ments, Ltd., billed as theworld’s largest retailer of

Clovernook HealthCare Pavilion is cele-brating 30 years ofserving the Tristatecommunity as a long-term-care facility thatspecializes in woundcare and rehabilitation. The wound care at Clo-vernook is unique tothe region.

“Clovernook’s great-est asset is the employ-ees that serve the resi-dents who live here,”says Amy Mullowney, facility administrator.“You cannot teach peo-ple to care, and wehave the most caringin the industry.”

The majority of itsemployees haveworked at Clovernookfor more than five

years.Clovernook sits on

six beautifully land-scaped acres and iscentrally located inHamilton County. Clo-vernook continuallyupdates its buildingand grounds to stayfresh and manicured.

The facility has justrenovated some resi-dent rooms, makingthem large, deluxeprivate quarters withflat-screen TVs withsatellite, as well asrefrigerators, sofasand private baths.

Clovernook recog-nizes its 30-year teammembers: Betty Chris-tophel, housekeepingand laundry director;Phyllis Radford, laun-

dry assistant; and Cin-dy Hibbs, LPN. These

ladies have dedicatedtheir careers to serving

Clovernook residentsand we thank them.

Clovernook celebrates 30th anniversary

should be poured onceeveryone is seated. Wineglasses should be filledhalfway, not to the rim.

Salad and bread shouldbe the only food on thetable when your guestsarrive.

Are you the hostesswith the mostest?

Remember, the hostessalways sits last.

Passing isn’t just infootball. Always passfood around the tablecounterclockwise to theright and refrain fromserving yourself first.Always pass the salt andpepper as a set, even ifyou’re only asked for one.

Can your guests seeeach other? Sure thoseflowers you spent hoursarranging for the center-piece are pretty, but theywill only get in the way ifyour guests have to cranetheir necks to see eachother. Make sure yourguests can look over anytable adornments.

Be a gracious guest“There is nothing more

disruptive than a cell-phone ringing at the din-ner table,” says Slatter.“Turn your phone on vi-brate, or better yet, don’teven bring it to the table.Holiday gatherings markthe time to enjoy thecompany of the peopleyou are with, rather thanignore them by chattingwith someone who’s noteven there.”

Wait for the signal.Your hosts will let youknow when it’s OK tobegin eating. They mayoffer a blessing or state-ment or perhaps start bypassing a dish.

If you’re not surewhich utensil to use witheach course, start on theoutside and work in to-ward the dinner plate.

If you need to excuseyourself temporarily, gently place your napkinon your chair to indicateyou will be coming back.

Signify you’re finishedwith the meal by placingyour napkin to the left ofthe dinner plate, and yourfork and knife side by

side diagonally acrossyour plate with the sharpside of the knife bladefacing inward and thefork tines up.

“Another big questionwe hear concerns what todo if you accidentallybreak a piece of the host’sdinnerware,” adds Slatter.

“You should certainlyoffer to replace the bro-ken piece especially if ithas sentimental value forthe host or hostess.”

Slatter says don’t losehope if your host doesn’tknow the name of thepattern or the manu-facturer; you can always

take advantage of Re-placements’ free patternidentification service.

You can find placesetting guides diagram-ming how to set the tablefor various meals atwww.replacements.com.
