Art“More than meets the eye”

-vase or two human profiles?

• Any additional items visible?

• Ex. An anvil. 2. An overpass pillar on a highway. 3. Champagne glass. 4. Piano stool. 5. Tower with revolving restaurant. 6. Minute-timer. 7. Propeller. 8. Chess-game rook or castle. 9. Fruit holder. 10. Bird bath. 11. Chalice. 12. Rubber grommet. 13. Keyhole slot in door. 14. An extrusion die. 15. Two Pontiac automobiles about to crash head on. 16. A screw jack. 17. An arrowhead going into an object. 18. Two girls sitting back-to-back and holding parcels on their heads.

Brainstorming History• Divide the students into groups of 3• Name a problem that everyone is familiar with,

ex. how to reduce the number of homeless people?

• Assign students a figure from history, fiction, or current events, such as Martin Luther King Jr, Ninja Turtles, Barbara Walters

• Have the students determine how those people would solve the problem, considering their expertise

Circle Stories• Give children a worksheet with

circle shapes. Ask them to add as many different details to each circle as possible, ex. face, sun, watch, cobweb

• In pairs, ask children to compare their drawings

Circle story continued…

• Next ask the kids to choose and cut out six of their circle drawings. Ask them to make as many connections as they can between these circles, ex. “the face is smiling because the watch says it’s lunchtime……”

Circle story continued…

• Next, the children in pairs will create stories incorporating their circle drawings

• As they draft stories they can add more details and use circle drawings as illustrations

• Finally, the kids will present their stories which will be discussed with the class
