Who are we?

Creative Play is one of the leading outdoor play equipment specialists in the UK. We design, manufacture and install all its equipment here in the UK, using UK-sourced materials (including our timber which comes from FSC-accredited sustainable sources).

Our equipment and safety surfacing has been installed in thousands of schools, nurseries, holiday parks, council play areas and holiday attractions across the UK.

We have a reputation for quality – built over the past 25 years - in our equipment, our installations and in our customer service. Schools and nurseries which we have worked with are more than happy to recommend us and ask us back to install new equipment when the need arises.

Our aim

Our goal is to design and make children’s play equipment that is fun to use and also keeps them active and develops a range of spatial skills such as balance, co-ordination, agility and strength. Our equipment is designed to meet Ofsted’s requirements for physical education. We have also designed equipment to encourage imaginative play and social interaction.

Creative Play has a number of Play Advisors to help you in planning and designing your playground based on the budget and space available. We produce detailed proposals with 3D images to show exactly how your play area could look. These are provided at no cost or obligation – so it is always worth asking Creative Play to quote to develop your play areas.

We aim to squeeze as much play value as possible from the budget and space available and schools often comment on how much better value Creative Play equipment is compared to other companies.

The importance of outdoor play equipment

We’re committed to developing the very best in children’s play equipment to promote healthy living and improved well-being for our youngsters. There is growing concern on the rise of obesity, the lack of regular exercise and the increase in sedentary lifestyles amongst young children. Current advice says that children should be having at least one hours’ moderate exercise every day. Our equipment helps schools achieve that aim (our Challenger range is often used for Physical Education lessons). More exercise can make children fitter and healthier, and also helps children concentrate better, makes them happier and can also have a positive impact on behaviour.


Sustainability : Our timber comes from sustainable sources in the UK and South Africa. Rubber used in our safety surfacing comes from recycled rubber that would otherwise go to landfill.

Timber : The majority of our play equipment is made from square cut timber. Why? Because the basic round timber used by other companies tends to split - as shown in the picture. Which means you could be replacing that equipment much sooner than you thought.

We build our equipment to last – we cap the ends of the timber to prevent water access, use arsenic and chrome-free preservatives and use timber that is naturally water-resistant. For that reason we guarantee our timber for 20 years.

We do use round timber for some of our ranges – but high quality, specially treated timber from South Africa that – if it splits at all - will split to a maximum of only 3mm.

Installation : We never subcontract. We only ever use our own, highly trained installation teams – all of whom are CRB checked. All our installations are compliant with European safety Standards

We know that you’re likely to compare a number of proposals from different play companies before choosing the one you want to transform your play area. So what should you be looking out for? And why should you choose Creative Play?

We listen : We’re here to deliver the play area YOU want. To do that, we have to listen carefully to what you’ve got to say and ensure that our proposals reflect your requirements.

Proposals : Once our Play Advisor has met with you and discussed your requirements, we develop a detailed proposal document – with 3D designs and plans – to allow you to visualise how your playground will look.

Our ranges : We have a wide range of equipment to meet every playground need ; active, social, imaginative, educational and sensory play and to support Learning Outside the Classroom. We also constantly update our ranges to meet new play requirements.

Flexibility : We’ve built many bespoke items for schools and nurseries to meet a specific requirement. That’s a flexibility few if any other companies can offer.

We design and manufacture our own equipment here in the UK : Our lead times are much shorter, meaning your playground is transformed much quicker. Many other play companies import their equipment (meaning you have to wait much longer for your equipment). All our equipment complies with European Safety Standard BS EN 1176.

Value for money : Many of our customers tell us that we offer much more play equipment for the budget than other companies – so we believe we offer the best value for money. Our aim is to combine the highest quality with affordable pricing.

Child Safety : All our equipment is compliant with European Safety Standards BS EN 1176. We’ve also introduced enhanced safety features, like our unique slip-resistant surface for steps and floors to make play safer in the wet. In addition, we add additional features like tamper-proof bolts. We also insist on installing the correct depth of safety surfacing required for specific equipment.

If you want your children to get fit and active, be safe while doing so and also have a great time, then a Challenger Trim Trail is the range for you. The Trim Trail incorporates separate elements that develop different parts of the body, provides a cardiovascular work out and allows for both social and active play.

Our Trim Trail components have been designed specifically to meet Ofsted’s requirements for physical education.

Many schools now incorporate a Trim Trail into their Physical Education lessons, as the equipment and layout ensures all children in a class are active for the duration of the lesson.

Indeed, schools find that children return from their Trim Trail session more alert and focused, which subsequently helps concentration in class.

Note : Safer surfacing with impact attenuating qualities will be required. Grass can be used provided it is well maintained.

Our Challenger Trim Trails are a great way for children to safely improve fitness and have fun at the same time. “Active, social & imaginative play for ages 2-12”Social and imaginative play are equally important. That’s why we created the Voyager range, designed to help children play imaginatively together. Whether it is sailing the Seven Seas in a Pirate Ship or Galleon, rushing to put out a fire in our Fire Engine, driving the Mini Train into the station or cross-country exploring in the Land Ranger, children will have plenty to keep them occupied and playing together.

Most of the range comes with fun physical components such as slides, scramble nets, jelly boards and the like.

The Voyager range offers a great alternative to traditional options of sport or physical exercise.

The Zenith and Zenith Max ranges allow children of different ages to enjoy the thrill of multi-level play. Moving from tower to tower using clatterbridges, crawling tubes and net bridges, children can also use slides and fireman’s poles to return to ground level – and ramps or climbing panels to get back up again.

Children love to find different routes around the towers – and find plenty of opportunity for both physical exercise and social interaction while on the equipment. For example, they learn to take turns in using slides and firemans’ poles, interact while using the under-tower seating or using the Shop Front play panel.

Creative Play’s new range brings all the colour and fun of the fair with multi-coloured roof and side panels, helter-skelter slides, play panels – and a performance stage with musical platform! The range promotes role play, social interaction and provides outdoor learning area potential with stage and musical play.

The Carnival range is fully modular – choose from between 1 and 6 towers and then the play features you want to meet your exact requirements.

Central to the Carnival range is the combination of a performance stage under a musical platform, which has two musical panels (from a choice of 6 options) to bring musical play to the Carnival. So children can play music upstairs while others dance and perform downstairs.

There is also space for sheltered seating under a tower for social play.

“Jungle climbing fun for ages 7-12” A brand new addition to our play equipment range. Our new climbers evoke the spirit of Africa with rounded timber combined with net platforms to create an attractive addition to any play area.

These climbers are very popular – accommodating many children at the same time and encouraging both active and social play. Balance, co-ordination, upper body development – all get tested in Africa!

The timber used comes from sustainable sources in South Africa, chosen for its resistance to the splitting seen in traditional round timber play equipment. This new timber is guaranteed not to split by more than 3mm (8mm is the minimum requirement to prevent finger entrapment). Sun shades are a vital element to outdoor learning, providing UV protection and shade in the learning area. Each can have seating or stage areas installed underneath to create an outdoor learning area, a picnic .

Sensory play has become a key element of playground development. The ability to interact with nature and to actively explore the outside world helps the development of social skills, communication skills, environmental awareness and much more. For this reason many schools are now developing sensory gardens on school premises - allowing all children access to the benefits of sensory play without the need (and the inherent problems) of having to go ‘off site’. In addition, they can also form the basis for extra-curricular activities such as Gardening Clubs.

We offer two standard Sensory Garden sizes - 4 metres square and 8 metres square. These comprise elements such as planters, trellis, playboards (such as a musical play items), Mini Beasts, Wormery and seating to create a secluded area where children can experience all elements of sensory play.

MUGA’s have become increasingly popular in schools across the UK. They provide an area to undertake PE lessons, to play traditional team sports and to let the children use during playtime. As they come with safety surfacing they provide a safer environment for active sports play.

A variety of surfacing options are available – including artificial grass, wetpour and synthetic surfacing – and markings for your choice of sports can be included (cricket, football, basketball, netball, hockey…). There are also optional extras including basketball hoops, cricket stumps and football goals.

SAFETY SURFACING

WETPOURAn all-weather playground surface combining safety, durability and a wide variety of colours – its construction and versatility allows for complex shapes and designs.

Wetpour is the ideal playground surface for most schools and nurseries. Durable and long lasting, Enhanced play value with colours and designs, Porous and fast-draining, BS EN 7188 and 1177 compliant, Available in a range of depths to suit the relevant Critical Fall Heights.

For child safety, Creative Play will always inform you when you need to install safety surfacing, and the correct depth of safety surfacing required for each specific item of equipment. If equipment is being installed onto tarmac or concrete, safety surfacing will be required. If installed onto grass, safety surfacing may not be required but may still be recommended to prevent soil erosion.

We own our own safety surfacing company – Playgrounds UK – so you have the peace of mind to know that you only need to deal with one company for all your playground needs. All our installers are CRB checked and highly experienced.

We offer four types of surfacing – Wetpour, Rubber Mulch, Playsafe and Artificial Grass. We will advise which surface is best for your particular needs (always keeping child safety clearly in mind). All are BS EN1177 compliant and guaranteed for 5 years.

Great as a play surface with aesthetic qualities – and can easily transform a worn grassy area into a safe play area.

Ideal for landscaping play areas, and of course great for natural look areas. A variety of ‘grasses’ to suit different needs are available.

Can be used to cover mounds and humps and prevents soil erosion in high traffic areas.

PLAYSAFEA synthetic woven all-weather surface, specially developed for playgrounds. It can be laid directly onto concrete, tarmac and grass at any time of year.

If you’re going to buy outdoor play equipment, you’ll want to know it has been built to the very highest specifications. After all, child safety is paramount – and we ensure all safety elements have been accommodated in our equipment and installations.

TimberOur timber is selected first grade timber from commercial plantations with a minimum of 70% of which is sourced from forests independently certified under the Forest Stewardship Council.

Timbers are cut free from the heart of the log and square cut with chamfered edges for extra safety.

Timber is a natural product and splitting can occur as a result of changes in the moisture content. In our experience the square cut timber we use is less prone to splitting.

All our timbers are pressure treated with a chrome-free and arsenic-free preservative which protects against decay and insect attack for 20 years.

Even with treated timber, it is possible for moisture to enter the end grain and in freezing conditions can cause damage. We therefore cap all end grains with custom-made polyethylene covers to prevent moisture entering and to protect little fingers from splinters and finger entrapment.

Panels and RoofsWe use high specification, self-coloured, co-extruded polyethylene panels exclusively used in the manufacture of our products.

This material is extremely durable, will not fade in sunshine, it is unaffected by moisture, will not delaminate, is graffiti resistant and easy to clean.

If you prefer a rustic look, we can provide half-rounded timbers secured to steel frames instead of polyethylene panels to create a more rustic look to our Tower ranges.

Floors and RampsBirch plywood exterior panels with a dense, rough ‘wire-mesh’ pattern surface to provide a slip-resistant finish.

Ropes and netsPolypropylene covered multi-filament steel core rope secured with hydraulically pressed end connections and custom made tamper-proof net joints.

ChainsSmall link galvanised chain - for safety, strength and longevity.

SpringsOur spring coils are designed not to compress and therefore not cause entrapment under load and during use.

Swing SeatsMade from rubber, the sides have a honeycomb construction for maximum impact absorption.

ConstructionHorizontal timbers are secured on the top of uprights by custom-made brackets rather than attached to the side of uprights. This maximises the load-bearing capacity. Foundations for timber uprights are 75cm x 40cm, infilled with concrete to 150mm below ground level.

Fastenings are tamper-proof or capped with secure custom-made plastic tamper proof covers. All footholds have a slip-resistant surface.
