  • I love all crafts and I especially love the challenge of making things in the authentic way but in 1/12th scale. My favourite medium is crazy quilting because it encompasses embroidery, tatting, crocheted edgings and beading. The difficult part is attaching the basic fabric patches to the backing material using the stitch and flip method while keeping the patches small enough to be the correct size for a dolls house scale.

I get my initial inspiration from books, visits to museums and from photos on the internet but once I start a room box, I dont really know how it will finish up. As I get involved in decorating it, the room takes on a life of its own and seems to tell me what to do next. I get a real thrill once it is completed because it is never what I had in mind to start with! I display my room boxes in a bookcase which has glass doors, although I have open bookcases either side of that and I am spreading out onto them as well.

I love the late Victorian early Edwardian era. I like to dress my dolls in clothes from that same period because the outfits were so elegant and stylish while still retaining some of frills and trimmings of the earlier Victorian era. I also love the large hats trimmed with flowers and feathers from the later Edwardian period and the fact that most stately homes of that time-frame had servants which lend themselves to the upstairs/downstairs type of life.

Most of my dolls house dolls and furniture are the normal commercial variety but I sometimes buy damaged dolls cheaply and mend them. Often the porcelain legs break but once glued together and painted to represent boots or black stockings, no-one but me and the doll knows about it. I strip them of their original clothes which are usually glued on - my two pet hates are glue and nylon lace! - and dress them in more appropriate outfits.

I also collect Pedigree Delite dolls. They were produced in England from 1953 for about five or six years, are seven inches tall and have rigid bodies and movable arms with the fingers splayed out like a starfish, which is what they are described as starfish hands. While some were sold naked, others were dressed as characters from Nursery Rhymes, Countries of the World and Storybooks. Altogether there were 37 different characters produced and so far, I havecollected 13 of them plus half a dozen naked ones, which I shall dress.

I dont belong to any miniature clubs except for being a member of the on-line Yahoo group Wee Creations, which is U.S. based and encourages members to create miniatures from everyday objects.

I have a blog which is called Anlaby Dollshouse Minis and Tiny Textiles, which replaces an earlier blog calledAnlaby Dollshouse, which for some reason I can no longer access to post new items. From now on I will only be posting to the new blog and adding tutorials to the pages on my side-bar. Anlaby is the name of the village (now suburb) of Hull in Yorkshire where my husband grew up and which is now the name of our house in Western Australia.

  • Yes, I started a branch of the West Australian Embroiderers Guild in 1982 teaching all kinds of embroiderytechniques. Later, I taught in several shops and then ran classes in my own home for several years. I co-judgedembroidery at local shows and had over forty designs published in Australian and English magazines.

Then in 1988 wrote my first book Australia Cross-stitch Designs. Between 1988 and 1995 I wrote six more books, mostly on cross-stitch and embroidery, with two on Decoupage for Kangaroo Press and also for Simon & Schuster(Australia). Having become all booked out and not wanting the pressure of any more deadlines, I stopped writingbut continued to teach classes at home.

My biggest highlight was being invited to demonstrate embroidery using Rajmahal Art-silk threads at a Stitches and Craft Fair at Alexandra Palace in London in 1995 for a week.

My plans for the future including making two miniature shop room-boxes. A Ladies Wear Emporium withdresses, hats, fans, shawls and all manner of accessories for sale plus a Toy Shop which is self explanatory. But before I do that, I want to complete a Morning Room, which will be a female equivalent to a Male Study very feminine decor where the lady of house plays the piano, paints pictures and entertains her friends. I also want to make a library with loads of empty shelves crying out for books, which I will have to make, buy, beg and borrow.

My only advice is that if I have a vague idea for a room box which might be constructed in the future, even a year or two ahead, I start collecting bits and pieces of furniture and accessories which then lend themselves to ideas for stitching items like cushions or rugs or making beaded jug-covers or bath-towels. So by the time I come to make my room box, it is already developing a personality. CM

The gathered stitch for this quilt came from a book published in 1984 called Knitting Encyclopedia 1500 Patterns by Mon Tricot.

I used the stitch and flip method of piecing the tiny patches by hand, using a 3 mm or 1/8 inch seam and tiny running stitches.
