Dear Archbishop Etienne,
Thank you for commemorating the Season of Creation in September 2020 with many of us
throughout Western Washington, through St. James Cathedral’s virtual event Laudato Si’ at Five
Years and Beyond. It is obvious that you have deeply embraced Pope Francis' seminal encyclical
on climate change, social justice for all of God’s creation, and integral ecology.
Starting with Laudato Si’ in 2015, the Holy Father has raised the alarm of a climate emergency
and called for prompt and sustained action at all levels: personal, institutional, community,
national, and international. Last year, the Vatican published Journeying Towards Care for Our
Common Home: Five Years after Laudato Si’, which outlines many concrete actions for
Catholics and all people of good will to reduce their carbon footprints. We applaud the recently-
published Ecumenical and Interreligious Guidebook: Care for our Common Home, released by
the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Catholic Association of Diocesan Ecumenical
and Interreligious Officers, and Catholic Climate Covenant. In it, we are reminded that, “As our
Catholic tradition urges, care for the Earth is part of our pro-life ethic” (EIG 3).
Indeed, Pope Francis has inspired many people, especially young people, to rise to the challenge
of personal and community-based actions to care for our common home. This is why many of us
have formed grass-roots Care for Creation groups within our parishes. For over five years,
parishes and institutions in the Archdiocese have collaborated on behalf of the Earth. Since your
time with us last September, our group has enlarged, and with it, there has been a renewed
energy as we learn from one other and create synergies of action for our common home. We now
do this work as the Creation Care Network.
It is a blessing that Pope Francis has provided strong and sustained leadership, calling for all
people to take action to address climate change. With his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI,

Francis stresses that “in the bread of the Eucharist, ‘creation is projected towards divinization,
towards the holy wedding feast, towards unification with the Creator himself’” (LS 236). As a
Eucharistic people, we long to be of one Body, joining in the efforts of the U.S. Bishops, and
with you, our Archbishop. We know of your deep concern for our world’s climate emergency
and our region’s environmental inequities.
We also acknowledge that the Archdiocese of Seattle extends from Canada to Oregon, from the
Cascade Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. We live on the traditional lands of the First Peoples
who continue to be on the front lines of preserving this land that we all hold dear in our hearts.
As our Ordinary, we look to your leadership to embolden us in our own commitment to address
the existential threat of climate change. The time to act is now. We have an amazing opportunity,
particularly as the Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan continues to develop, to work together in the
bonds of fraternity. We know that “the deterioration of the environment and of society affects the
most vulnerable people on the planet” (LS 48). We wish to actively work with you to address
climate change. We therefore propose that the Archdiocese of Seattle considers launching the
following initiatives to address the climate crisis:
1. Establish an Office of Integral Ecology, or designate a leader for this important ministry,
to address climate change, climate inequities, and care for our common home.
2. Provide regular and sustained leadership and assistance to parishes in creating dialogue
and actions to address climate change and climate inequities, and liturgical resources for
communal celebrations to pray for Creation. Encourage each parish to have an active
Care for Creation team that leads efforts to celebrate the Season of Creation, Earth Day,
and Laudato Si’ Week.
3. Encourage all Archdiocesan parishes and schools to undertake energy audits and
upgrades. When completed, the local Church’s carbon footprint would be significantly
reduced. The local Church would be a model of the universal Church's commitment to
Care for Creation.
4. Include Laudato Si’ and integral ecology in ongoing clergy formation. Allocate a portion
of every year’s Priest Days gathering to encourage all priests to live out the vision of
Laudato Si’.
5. Develop a deeper understanding of the traditional Coast Salish wisdom that has been
used to honor and protect God’s Creation. Strengthen the already-existing relationships
with the First Peoples, the indigenous stewards of the environment.
6. Publish regular articles and columns in Northwest Catholic on climate change and action.
7. Declare a Year of Laudato Si’ for the Archdiocese of Seattle.
8. Host annual conferences on climate change and care for our common home. This may be
done in conjunction with the bi-annual Cornerstone Conference.
9. Perform a review of all Archdiocesan investments followed by a plan for the divestment
from all fossil fuel companies and funds and redirect these investments towards green,
zero-carbon companies and climate solutions.

Archbishop Etienne, you have been with us in the Archdiocese of Seattle for almost two years. In
this time, we have grown to embrace you as the leader of our faith. We look to you to guide all
of us to better care for our common home. We have already been doing this, and we are
strengthened by the blessing and support you showered upon us last September. We are mindful
of Pope Francis’ charge in Laudato Si’: “We read in the Gospel that Jesus says of the birds of the
air that ‘not one of them is forgotten before God’ (Lk 12:6). How then can we possibly mistreat
them or cause them harm? I ask all Christians to recognize and to live fully this dimension of
their conversion” (LS 221). Please know that we are ready to assist, to partner with, and to work
alongside you, as stewards of this world, for we are all brothers and sisters through the Body of
Christ.
Thank you for your continued blessings and support. We very much appreciate the time you have
taken to read our letter and consider our heartfelt appeal. We look forward to furthering our
relationship with you, in care for the Earth, our common home.
