We exist to create environments that help our clients and communities prosper.
Every day, 3,000 Opus experts across the globe create what matters for future generations – road and rail systems to drive economies; buildings for growing cities; water to sustain people and industries.
We are driven to make the world around us work better.
You see it in the things we made yesterday, the projects we manage across the globe today, and our vision for making a better world tomorrow.
From high-speed rail in the United Kingdom to intelligent water treatment management in Canada. From complex bridge design in Australia to world-leading seismic resilience in New Zealand. We mobilise a global pool of experts to develop and maintain infrastructure that solves challenges for thousands of clients.

We start with people – the cyclist commuting to work, the
office worker, families at play in the local park.
The human perspective we bring to every project ensures our
clients deliver infrastructure solutions that enhance the lives
of people.
How do we do it? By working as a truly connected enterprise.
When you choose Opus, you don’t just deal with the
local office. Our project teams live and work in the very
communities our projects are delivered. From this real world
context, we draw on a global pool of engineering expertise,
behavioural science, and big data to solve client challenges in
a holistic way.
It means the infrastructure we deliver is really smart, operates
sustainably, and keeps performing over an extended life.
The value we place on our people, partners and clients is
demonstrated in our commitment to leading best practice in
health, safety and wellness for our staff, the world over.

Opus today is a world away from our predecessor,
the Public Works Department. It was 1870 when the
government body opened up New Zealand’s pristine
countryside to deliver a national road and rail network.
For the next 100 years, the Public Works Department
– renamed Ministry of Works and Development in 1943 –
spearheaded New Zealand’s great infrastructure buildout,
establishing military installations, hydroelectricity
facilities, airports, tunnels, and irrigation schemes.
In 1988 the ministry became a state-owned enterprise
– a move that launched the organisation’s consultancy
division as a separate operating business, called Works
Consultancy Services. Sold in 1996 to Kinta Kellas
of Malaysia, the business was rebranded to Opus
International Consultants Limited (Opus) in 1997 and
listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange in 2007.
Today, 3,000 Opus designers, architects, planners
and engineers work across the globe, developing
world-leading social and fixed infrastructure for our
communities.
We serve 12,000 clients from offices in New Zealand,
Australia, the UK, and North America.

Planning and developing sustainable water supply is a
complex business.
As one of the leading water sector service providers,
our smart water supply and treatment facilities set the
standard for sustainable water management.
Opus water specialists helped spearhead SCIRT
(Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team),
designing water and wastewater systems, and guiding
investment for New Zealand’s 3-Waters networks –
assets worth an estimated NZD$45.2 billion. In the
harbour city Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, we
designed and constructed the Five Fingers Ocean
Outfall. Also in British Columbia, we designed a
wastewater treatment plant for the city of Ladysmith,
and a new membrane filtration water treatment plant
for the District of Sicamous.
Consulting Services:
• Water & Wastewater Treatment
• Conveyance (Distribution & Storage)
• Storm Water & Flood Risk Management
• Water Resources – Rivers, Lakes & Coastal
• Water For Agriculture
We sustain usable water for cities, communities, and industry.Water

Buildings
We are a global team of property consultants, project
managers, architects, urban designers, engineers, space
planners, and interior designers.
Our skills with building information modelling (BIM)
ensure contractors work with better information and
build with more certainty. We also know holistic asset
management inside-out, helping clients to prioritise
investment and extend the life of their buildings.
For the Waikato University, in Hamilton, NZ, Opus
designed the new NZD$30m Law School building
to whole-of-life principles that minimise ownership
costs over the building’s life. In the UK we designed
storage facilities for the Royal National Lifeboat
Institution’s lifeboats. Clifftop launch-sites required
advanced structural and geotechnical designs.
And in Christchurch, NZ, where the earthquake
recovery continues, we designed our own city office,
incorporating the latest seismic design standards to
withstand earthquakes.
Consulting Services:
• Building Maintenance Management
• Building Commissioning & Soft Landings
• Structural & Seismic Engineering
• Architectural Design
• Interior Design
• Electrical Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Fire Engineering
• Facility Management
• Building Survey & Inspection
• Building Legislation & Regulatory - Consents & Compliance
• Security Services
We design and maintain world-class buildings.

Our transportation infrastructure projects quite literally
track the globe. We’re rebuilding roads in Africa, and in
Auckland we’ve upgraded the rail network and readied
it for electrification. Opus specialists integrated unique
environmental factors into the design of an iconic pedestrian
bridge in Port Macquarie, Australia. And in Saudi Arabia we’ve
partnered the Royal Commission of Jubail to develop an asset
management system for a sustainable city.
From asset policy advice to overseeing the development of
major transportation projects, Opus ensures you get the most
from your transportation assets.
