Creating Value with Connected

Devices

HIGHLIGHTS

This paper details the aforesaid marketing

themes that OEMs can pursue and also the

solution that OEMs need to pursue these ideas

OEMs who make home appliances like washers and

dryers (W/Ds) are struggling with stagnant demand.

Connected devices enable OEMs to acquire GEMS,

which stands for

1. Gain new customers;

2. Empower partners;

3. Motivate field force; and,

4. Secure customer loyalty

Secure loyalty with data-driven

products and warranty services

Motivate field force by making them successful

Empower channel partners and monetize the

service

Marketing themes for OEM’s to pursue

Gain new customers by

creating customer

confidence

• EG: To solidify the behavior

of a customer, the W/D can

display the benefit in terms

of energy saved after very

wash or dry operation. The

W/D can remotely connect

to OEM server and enrich

displayed information by

using unit energy cost by

zip code

OEMs knowing the customer psychology has to be followed up with an action

plan to exploit potential wide market

• OEMs can use the product

usage data to understand

customer behavior across

regions. This will help in

knowing the products that

appeal in a region and also

the ones that appeal to a

demography

• Using the fault and failure

analytics, OEMs can

identify the training

programs needed for

service professionals and

can also customize them

by region or served

markets

• In addition to using remote

connectivity to send

energy pricing information,

OEM can collect the usage

data and energy

consumption from W/Ds to

improve product design

Secure loyalty with data-driven

products and warranty services

Motivate field force by making them successful

Empower channel

partners and monetize the

service

Gain new customers by

creating customer

confidence

Connected Device Solution to pursue marketing themes

For OEMs to pursue aforesaid business ideas, they need a connected device solution. The connected device

solution is model and make agnostic, except for the hardware which is mounted on the W/Ds and connected to

sensors

1. Hardware

It has circuit to communicate with sensors and electronic

control unit (ECU) in a W/D; possess a GPS chip; and

telecom system to transfer data wirelessly

It passes the collected information to firmware for enriching

it and then connects to telecom systems to transmit

processed and packaged information to central server

2. Firmware

It processes the incoming sensor signals and adds

meaning to it. It compresses the processed information

and sends data packets to backend server. It is also

capable of running remote diagnostics codes sent by a

technician from central server

The firmware that runs on hardware handles three types of

data: faults, remote diagnostics codes and event data. All

critical faults are processed immediately and sent to target

user for taking corrective action

3. Telecom

It serves as information pipe to connect remote equipment

to the backend server for a two-way communication

However, to initiate transfers from server to device for

example, to do a firmware update over the air, we send a

wake up SMS to device following which GPRS connection

is established for further communication

4. Central server to create insights that drive actions

Perform usage based analysis to identify preventive

actions

Execute trend analysis and use service knowledge to

predict failures that call for proactive actions

Create machine learning algorithms to predict failures to

make course corrections

Conclusion

OEMs are in a better position to implement a connected device solution that enables

timely service of equipment, access to operations data and security of equipment.

There are 3rd party technology service providers who have a platform based solution

that comprises of hardware, which will capture and transmit data backend server, and a

cloud-based application, which will churn the data and provide expected business

insights over browser to the OEM
