Today we are going to look at different paper toys and how

to make them...

All of these toys have been made

from paper. What do you think each toy

does?

How do you think they were made? What looks easy? What looks difficult?

Let’s take a look at how to make the snail first...

1. 2. 3.

First, decorate the snail template. (You will have to decorate the other side of the snail’s body too.) Cut out both parts carefully.

Fold accurately along the dotted line so that the

snail’s head and eyes are facing forward!

Roll up the snail’s shell as tightly as you can, all the way to the end. Hold it

rolled up.

Now let go of the paper and it will uncurl. It will

start to look like the snail’s shell!

Decide where you want the shell to sit on the snail, and then tape it in place.

You have now made your very own paper snail!

Let’s look at how to make

the helicopter

next...

1. 2. 3.

First, decorate the helicopter template. (You need to decorate one side of each ‘wing’.) Cut out

carefully.

Cut carefully along the black line to separate the two wings. Make sure you stop when you reach the

dotted line.

Fold the wing that you have decorated the back of along the dotted line.

You should now be able to see your design.

4. 6.5.

Turn the helicopter over and then fold the other

wing along the dotted line in the opposite direction to

the first wing.

Now fold along the dotted line at the bottom of the

helicopter. Put a paper clip on it to hold it in place.

Hold it in the centre (the ‘T’ shape part) then throw

it up in the air – you should see it spin!

Now let’s look at how to make the flapping

bird...

1. 3.2.

First, decorate the bird template. Cut out both

parts carefully.

Fold along the middle dotted line on the wings

so that they fold together.

Now fold along the other dotted lines so that the wings bend upwards.

4. 5. 6.

Put a piece of string through the wings, leaving a big loop before you tie it

at the top.

Place the wings on the body, and staple them

together, making sure the string is trapped between the paper and the staple.

Pull the string up and down to see the bird flap!

Next let’s look at how to make the

rolling dog...

1. 3.2.

First, decorate the dog template. Cut out

carefully.

Fold the dog in half accurately, using the black

line to help you. Make holes in the legs where

each circle is.

Carefully push a straw through the hole of one of

the legs.

4. 6.5.

Put a cotton reel on the straw, and then gently push the straw through the hole in the other leg.

Repeat this for the other pair of legs. Cut down the

straws if they are too long.

Push your dog and see him roll along!

Next let’s look at how to make the pecking bird...

1. 3.2.

First, decorate and then cut out your template.

Make sure you cut out the section between the beaks

and the feet carefully.

Fold along both dotted lines so that the front and

back of the bird come together.

Turn the template over. Cut a piece of straw the same length as the feet

section, and tape it securely in the middle.

5.4.

Fold again, and this time stick the two sides of the bird together. Make sure

you stick the feet together too.

Put some string through the straw.

Hold the string tightly and straight. Pull the bird to the top of the string, then let it go. He

should fall and peck all the way down the

string!

Finally let’s look at how to make the

circus rider...

1. 3.2.

First, decorate and then cut out both parts of the

template.

Carefully unfold a paper clip, making sure that the end on each side is still

curled.

Turn the template over. Fold up the white tab at the bottom of the shoe. Hook the paper clip in, and secure with tape.

Page 21: Creating Paper Toys · Back Next 4. 5. 6. Turn the helicopter over and then fold the other wing along the dotted line in the opposite direction to the first wing

4. 5.

Carefully, make a hole in the centre of the wheel.

Push the end of the paper clip that is attached to the

shoe through this hole.

Hold the other part of the paper clip straight, and push the wheel

along!
