I was intro-duced to St. Andrew Nativity School a num-ber of years ago through a number of dif-ferent avenues. One experi-ence stands out above the rest. At the time I was in a leader-ship role at Jesuit High School. My son was a freshman football player at the school and came home after a game quite distressed over an injury on the field. His teammate was taken off by ambulance, which was trau-matic enough. But his real concern was the knowledge that his injured teammate lived in a household that might best be described as “chaotic”. He and the rest of his team were really worried about who would take care of their classmate at the hospital and thereafter.

The next day I attended a meeting at the school and used the opportunity to ask about the injured teammate. I learned from the Director of Diversity that the student was okay after an ER visit, but his parents could not

be reached to allow him to be dis-charged to home the night before. However, after learning about the incident, a woman named Aggie, armed with a medical file and a form allowing her to make deci-sions on behalf of this student, was at the hospital. She took care of the discharge paperwork and saw that the student got home safely and that the parents were given the discharge medical instructions for follow up care. Aggie, I later learned, was the (then) Graduate Support Director at a school called St. Andrew Nativity School.

Over the years I have been for-tunate to become a part of this magical institution. The success of the school, and its impact on the community at large, is made pos-sible through the dedication and passion demonstrated by faculty, staff, volunteers and students. The sense of support, love and acceptance that permeates Nativity School, as was exemplified by Aggie that night, extends far beyond the walls of the classroom.

Nativity School creates learners who succeed not only in middle school but in high school, college and beyond. Nativity faculty bring devotion, creativity and expertise that translate these principles into a community which fosters continued educational and personal growth.

Our generous donors bring financial gifts that allow Nativity school to offer this service without tuition and without taxpayer support to our stu-dents from low-income families. The result is that children who come to our school with a very low statistical probability of graduating from high school instead have graduated at a 96% rate. Over 80% of these men and women have gone onto college studies. They have assumed lead-ership roles in some of the most competitive college prep schools in our city and are already emerging as leaders in their local community.

On behalf of our Board of Trustees we offer this model to our com-munity with pride and a dedication to continue the creation of lifelong learners for years to come.

economic model and infant mortality rate? (A student actually answered this question for me at

our Curriculum Fair last year).

3) Build community. Perhaps my favorite memory from last year was the 8th grade vs. faculty bas-ketball game. Intensely competitive, Mr. Eberly and Amyr, a freshman this year at Jesuit, fought over the ball throughout the game and then gave one another a big hug at the end. Like any strong community, we have sacred traditions that we observe every year.

4) align our values. The 20 faculty and staff members are consistent in their values, so the environment feels safe and predictable. Being “nice” is not old fashioned here.

5) Celebrate success. It is part of our culture to celebrate student and staff success in the class-room, on the field, and by taking a bow on stage.

6) model unconditional love. There is no greater gift we can give our children than for them to know that they are loved for being who they are today, tomorrow, and into the future.

Thank you for supporting our young people, faculty, staff and families. With your help, we are nurturing curiosity and critical thinking and creating lifelong learners.

dear Nativity Community,

Creating Lifelong Learners…what an audacious task! Or is it? If you’ve ever watched a three year old explore nature,

come up with hypotheses that explain phenom-ena such as rainbows and dew, then you know that we are all born to be Lifelong Learners. So how do you teach grammar, drill math facts, and analyze literature and make it fun? That is our challenge and we take it seriously.

Here’s what I see when I walk around St. Andrew Nativity School:

1) Know the kids. Teachers know and care about each young person in this building. They believe in their innate goodness and intelligence. And because a child is known, and sees the positive reflection of himself in the eyes of the teacher, he strives to do his best—to live up to those positive expecta-tions.

2) make it fun. While there is schoolWORK and homeWORK, there are also learning games, iPad research, field trips, and group projects. As I walk into our classrooms, I often see organized chaos! Students are working in teams on cross-curricular projects that help them see how the skills and knowledge they are gaining relate to the real world—how has the history and religion of India shaped their

Nativity students, on average, gain five grade levels in three years. Making such dramatic academic gains takes excellent teaching and hardworking students. Students arrive in uniform between 7:15 and 8:00 a.m. for breakfast. From 8:00 a.m. until 8:15 a.m. they attend assembly, which includes prayer, reflection, and an overview of the day and week. From 8:15 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., Nativity School looks like other schools except boys and girls are educated separately, the teacher

to student ratio is 1:15, and there are two periods of language arts – one to focus on grammar and the other, literature. After a brief stretch break and snack, Nativity stu-dents resume their studies from 3:10 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. This two-hour block of study hall allows students to complete their home-work and get help from teachers and tutors. Every student attends summer school.

In addition to time on task, our students benefit from a school counselor who teaches “soft skills” such as goal setting, communication, study skills, and stress management. The graduate support director is there at the beginning of 8th grade to help our young people decide where they wish to attend high school. Ninety percent of our stu-dents receive a full-ride scholarship to a Catholic, college-preparatory high school. The five Jesuit characteristics (open to growth, loving, committed to justice, religious, and intellectually competent) are

used to redirect students with a JUG (detention) or a Virtue Award—a note given to students when they are “caught” exhibiting the Jesuit character-istics. All 20 of the Nativity staff members have sincere love for and exceedingly high expectations of our young people.

The Nativity Model of Education: “Why IT Works”

20 of our 24 graduates earned acceptance and received schol-arships into private college-preparatory high schools including Central Catholic, De La Salle North, Jesuit, La Salle Prep, and St. Mary’s Academy. The other four are attend-ing public and charter schools.

17 of 17 of our 2010 Nativity graduates went on to earn high school diplomas in 2014 – 100% success!

Nativity’s Graduate support Program: • Provides guidance throughout the high

school and college admissions process for students and families

• Facilitates high school and college site visits as well as mentoring and professional job shadowing opportunities

• Schedules weekly check-ins to help resolve barriers to academic success

(transportation, tutoring, etc.)

Congratulations 2014 Graduates!

In spite of the gains Paris was making academically, she describes her own per-sonal growth as a challenge, “being open to growth was always a struggle for me at Nativity; however, by the time I gradu-ated from 8th grade, I had realized the importance of this characteristic. This was just before my world did a 180 degree turn.” Paris was accepted to St. Michael’s University School in Victoria, BC Canada with a full scholarship. “Attending St. Michael’s allowed me to live in another country while being surrounded by stu-dents from many different countries from

all corners of the world. I ate a variety of foods and learned about new traditions and languages while sharing my culture

with others as well. My school also made us step out of our comfort zones by teach-ing us how to survive on a mountain for a week, learning Spanish, and doing service in Nicaragua.”

During her time at St. Michael’s, Paris had the opportunity to return to Portland about once a month. “Almost every time, I found myself visiting students and teachers at Nativity. I would update them about how things were going and ask them if they could explain concepts to me that I may not have understood in class. Ms. Whitty was always willing to proofread any of my English papers and Mr. Park would allow me to compare my newly acquired knowl-edge of Canadian history with his students’ knowledge of American history.”

Nativity aLum

Paris Lowe graduated from St. Andrew Nativity School in 2010. “I did not know much about Nativity at all when I applied to attend the school. My mom was very instrumental in ensuring that I received the amazing education that Nativity provides. Any opportunity presented to me, my mom made sure that I took advantage of; tutoring, extra help sessions with teachers and even peer mentoring to others to allow me to learn by teaching others. Nativity did a wonderful job of preparing me for high school. They taught me that being proactive and asking ques-tions about work as soon as I needed it, would keep me from getting behind. Another skill that I received is how to use both my teacher and classmates as learning tools. We used to come up with songs and jingles associated with our scientific terms that would help with our long term storage of the information. I still remember the song associated with the organelles of the cell.”

“Though it was hard at times, I learned how to persevere.”

Paris excelled at St. Michael’s and graduated this past June. She will be attending the University of San Diego this fall and will study sociology and pre-medicine concurrently. “This will put me on the right track to either attend medical school to become an obstetri-cian or go into public health and travel to different countries to help improve the healthcare of women and children.”

When asked about what she is most proud of, Paris replied, “I am proud of simply not giv-ing up. Though it was hard at times, I learned how to perse-vere. Being independent and not living at home taught me that sometimes you have to be your own greatest cheerleader. If there is anything that I would like for people to know about me, it is that I am no super hero. I got to where I am today not by receiving a super hero power of success, but by taking advantage of the life changing opportunities presented to me. Sometimes life gets hard, but nothing in life worth having, comes easily. The biggest lesson that Nativity taught me is that no matter where you come from or what your background is, you can be successful.”

The Year in review: What’s new at nativity?

St. Andrew Nativity School is constantly making improvements in order to better serve our students, their families, and our community as a whole. 2013-14 was a tremendous year of change for Nativity—we launched a new technology initiative, added art enrichment to our after school program, and changed our standardized testing.

Through a generous anonymous gift, our technology infrastructure is now current. This has enabled us to invest in North-west Education Association’s Measuring Academic Progress (MAP) testing which gives immediate feedback on student progress. Testing students more fre-quently helps teachers understand which skill areas need further development in math, reading, writing, and science. With the help of Rotary, we have an iPad cart and 30 iPads for our students. Teachers are enjoying integrating the iPad appli-cations into their lesson plans. With the update of our student database soft-ware, families will now have daily access to students’ grades.

With our school library organized and efficient, our librarian Carol Ramsey will spend time with students who need academic intervention. Students with learning differences will benefit from one-on-one time building skills in reading and writing. Caring tutors and mentors will continue to work with our students bringing their talents to the forefront. We have added more variety and fresh food to our school meal program which will be congruent with our health curriculum on the importance of nutrition and healthy eating.

BOYs 2 Men: Who taught you to be a man?For many young men, there is not a father in the house to model what it is to “be a man.” Mr. George Weatheroy and Dr. Mark O’Hollaren have been talking to boys about what it means to be a man for over six years at Nativity School. Each Wednesday afternoon, boys gather in a classroom and talk about what is going on in their lives. George and Mark listen to the young men and offer advice and encouragement. As middle schoolers, these young men have questions about the changes they are undergoing and about their future. George and Mark facilitate the Boys 2 Men class over the course of the school year, creating trusting relationships with the boys that will influence them forever. George, speaking about his experience with the group, said “I’ve enjoyed being part of the Nativity team that gets to cultivate the attributes these young men will need to be the future lead-ers of our city, state, and country.” When asked about Boys 2 Men, Nativity 6th grader Pedro said, “being a man means tak-ing responsibility and taking care of your family.”

Endowment

“The gratification of wealth is not found in mere possession or in lavish expenditure, but in its wise application.” -Miguel de Cervantes, Spanish Writer

Nativity School is blessed with determined, hard-working students, dedicated teachers, and a community of donors who are deeply committed to its mission—ensuring a high quality education that helps lift families out of poverty. In order to sustain our standard of excellence, and to solidify this base of support, our endowment is (and will con-tinue to be) a high priority. Investment in a well-funded and expertly managed endow-ment is wise and prudent because:

1) It creates a stronger Nativity School by allowing the school to plan more confidently for the future. Our current endowment is five million dollars and in four years, we hope to have ten million dollars in our endowment. We will use 4% of the three year average to augment our operating budget.

2) It provides a fund that is guarded and invested separately with the principal remaining intact. Becker Capital Management manages our endowment.

3) It is a significant, positive legacy which has a lasting impact on our young people. Whether support for the endowment is through a scholarship, a named fund, bequest, or cash donation, it fits squarely within the “wise application” contemplated by Cervantes and is deeply appreciated by Nativity School leadership.
