JOURNEY SO FAR...

Prateek Kaul

Either we all are able or no one is! GiftAbled was envisaged as anorganization which could bridge the gap in our society between what is perceived as ability and disability. All of us have limitations that may be mental, physical or spiritual and we also have strengths in dierent areas. The extent of society’s ability is a sum total of individual strengths and limitations. Unfortunately to a large extent, disability is dened byphysical or mental parameters of an individual instead of theenvironment. Also depending on subjective attributes dened bysociety, a person is labeled -disabled or non-disabled; even though this distinction is incorrect. Let me illustrate simply: Stephen Hawking, the

living legend is without doubt exceptionally intelligent.. His contribution to the science and in turn to society has been worth emulating. He has been tested in ways no others have been. The greatest mind in the world! Hawking passed all kinds of tests with ying colours, but society still labeled him disabled. We need to get rid of such discriminations, and that’s exactly where GiftAbled comes in. Not just advocacy of rights for the People with Disability but also creating an enabling environment for everyone to nd their rightful place in today’s competitive world is what GiftAbled aims to do. The question is how do you build such a world, where contribution matters more than the size and shape of your limbs? We envision a world in the near future where preconceived norms dened by society will be ignored and constructive contribution in your eld of choice will be the ultimate limits test of ability.

When we founded GiftAbled 2 years ago I was condent we make an impact, but I could not have imagined how much we would accomplish in such a short period of time. So far, we’ve touched the lives of People withDisability through our unique inclusive initiatives with the invaluablesupport from many wonderful volunteers, donors and partner organizations. It has been an exciting and memorable journey, and I can’t wait to see how much more we can do in the days, months and years ahead. It is my honour to present to you the work we have done so far. I hope you enjoy reading every bit of it.

Note From The Co Founders

GiftAbled is a Social Enterprise which strives to create an ecosystem of like-minded individuals to collectively build an inclusive society.

We have been fortunate to have the constant support of volunteers from diverse backgrounds who have also given us their valuable inputs.

Our sensitization workshops are designed to bust myths (unfortunately) too many of them have been passed down to us) surrounding disability, and give the audience an insight into the real needs of the disabled and an understanding of how to approach and interact with them.

We strive to design our events in a manner that keeps volunteers coming back, and encourages them to keep the chain going, and share their knowledge with a larger audience.

Looking back at the events of the past years, it gives us great pleasure to announce with pride the ones that embody the GiftAbled principles.

To inculcate condence, leadership skills, involving them in team work and giving them responsibilities

To promote Sign Language among the public at large.

April 2014 - March 2015

An inaugural inclusive activity event aimed at visually impaired in order to improve the communications between sighted volunteers and visually impaired. Life experiences and success stories were shared by the visually impaired with the other participants through group addressing and individual interactions.

The 2nd meet was organised by vision club members on January 11th to commemorate the birth anniversary of Louis Braille - inventor of Braille, as well as to create awareness on the Braille system and to teach Braille tovolunteers and toconduct a test of their brailling abilities.

The challenge included a session of learning experience for those who were new to Braille and practice experience for the Brailleliterates who had learnt Braille through 'Intro to Braille and Sign Language' Workshops by GiftAbled. In the session, the visually impaired facilitators did a hand holdingsession for the sighted, teaching them the basics of Braille writing. Followed by Braille Writing competition for the sighted.

Institutional Trainings:

Through our work, we observed that it is not only the individuals that need support, but also other institutions, groups, andorganisations that deal with disability. We identied and worked with a large number of organisations and helped them put in place best practices and methods to support People with Disability.

The event also included special sessions on 'Assistive Devices and Corporate Inclusiveness Environment and Interactions' with persons with variousdisabilities.

The event aimed at shifting focus fromdisabilities to possibilities.

GiftAbled @Hyderabad:

While our beginnings were in Bangalore, we aim to reach out to a global audience. In 2015 we had the opportunity to visit the Tata Institute in Hyderabad to lean best practices in disability and also attended a refresher course on Braille and Sign Language. We also visited NGOs in Hyderabad where we shared best practices and learned the bestpractices. Learning never ends, andexploring ideas will lead us to improvisation and innovation.

The Wall of Hope is an initiative to bring this feeling to reality. WoH has served as a platform for persons with disability to open their hearts and express their deepest wishes on paper, which are pasted onto the wall.

We initiated the wall of hope, so that some dreams, some hopes, that are hard to achieve alone, can be achieved together. The wish can be anything from a ower to a wheelchair.

The WoH is set up at various event locations and also at the GiftAbled oce. The donor or wish fulller picks a wish and either contributes the monetary amount or fulls the wish directly. Wishes are also listed out and sent to corporates who wish toparticipate.

We have been able to full over 250 wishes. We have learned that this project enables everyone to support people with disability and make a positive impact on their lives.

Wall of Hope
