Our Mission: United Ministries is a housing
and social justice organization
dedicated to assisting homeless men
who want to change their lives, and
to changing community attitudes
toward the homeless.
Our Vision: United Ministries stands as a source
of hope and change in the Baltimore
community. Through successful
partnerships homelessness will be
reduced in both its magnitude and
severity, as all people are treated
with dignity and have access to both
the services and housing that they
and their families need.
Our 2014 Outcomes: *This number includes
residents who remained in the
program at year end and those
who entered during the year.

Dear Friends & Neighbors, In the Beginning…there are many creation stories throughout the world with similar themes of darkness and light. In the same way, we have stories of creation and new beginnings that contain common threads that brought the men to us including: • Untreated mental health • Incarceration • Addiction • Low self-esteem • Hurt/pain-feelings of hopelessness. The men are individuals and understanding that is crucial to our success. Whether they were shuffled from foster home to foster home or were raised in a two-parent family; whether they found themselves consumed by drugs or alcohol before they had a chance to reach adulthood or they found themselves addicted later in life; whether they are college educated or dropped out of school, they are someone’s son and they deserve a second chance. You make the stories of new beginnings that you find in this annual report possible every day. Thanks to you, men are reuniting with their families, continu-ing their education, obtaining employment, housing and stability; they are thriving and not just struggling to survive. In 2014, 32 men found a safe haven at Earl’s Place. Four participated in work-force training, seven obtained employment, four enrolled in college, two enrolled in GED programs, nine increased their income. Ten men moved to permanent housing, two moved in with friends, three were unsuccessful; the remaining 17 continued their stay at Earl’s Place. Soon, thanks to you, there will be more opportunities for stories of new beginnings as 12 chronically homeless men move into their new homes at Prospect Place. In the fall of 2015, these men will begin creating their own stories of new life and new beginnings. Thank you for providing a place where the men can emerge from the darkness into the light. Thank you for helping us make dreams come true. Without you, this would not be possible.
We look forward to sharing many more stories of new beginnings with you.
Sheila Helgerson Rev. Jennifer Knighton Executive Director Board President
Lives YouChangedYour kindness and generosity creates a space
where men who have experienced homelessness
can thrive. Thanks to you, in 2014 residents
reunited with loved ones, returned to school,
maintained their recovery from alcohol and
substance abuse, and discovered new career paths.
ERNIE’S STORY
Creating New Careers
Before Earl’s Place, Ernie felt lost. Although he had made
a commitment to maintaining his recovery from addic-
tion and mending his relationship with his mother, he
struggled to find full-time work that was a good fit. Earl’s
Place helps our men realize dreams that they may have
forgotten. Ernie shared with our Case Manager Jim that
he hoped to travel beyond Baltimore and see new things.
Jim suggested that Ernie pursue a commercial driver’s
license, and thanks to an award from Central Scholarship
he attended a CDL-A training course. He obtained a job
with good pay immediately after passing his driving exam.
He has now been to 48 states and has been given the
responsibility of training new drivers. His personal journey
to move past homelessness and addiction has given way
to a veritable journey across the country. Thank you for
giving Ernie the chance to rediscover a dream.
CHRIS’ STORY
Creating Stability through Education
Chris completed the Earl’s Place program in June 2014 and
moved into a one bedroom apartment of his own. He has
since put much care into creating an atmosphere there that
makes him feel comfortable and relaxed. Chris was able to
build a new life for himself because he made the most of
his time at Earl’s Place. Although he was eager to rejoin the
workforce, Chris first chose to return to school for addi-
tional vocational training; he knew that investing in himself
would solidify his future. Chris was awarded a scholarship
from Baltimore-based Central Scholarship and became
HVAC certified from Baltimore County Community College.
He secured full-time employment almost immediately after
graduating from BCCC. Despite his busy work schedule
Chris continues to stay in touch and visit Earl’s Place.
ROBERT’S STORY
Creating Sober Futures
Recovery from either substance or alcohol abuse is a
core tenant of the Earl’s Place program. All residents
attend AA or NA meetings and support each other in
maintaining their sobriety. Robert arrived at Earl’s Place
on Jan. 13th, 2014 and is now building a better life.
Robert knew that remaining drug free is key to being
the man he truly is. While under the influence of drugs
Robert felt robbed of his true nature: “A person gets to
a point where it’s like ‘this ain’t me because your spirit is
broken.” Robert is now looking forward to a bright future.
“My mind was so polluted [while using drugs], I thought
that a momentary feeling was enough...It was just day to
day living. But now, I can see myself 5 years from now.
It’s a beautiful thing to live and not just exist.”
MIKE’S STORY
Creating Strong Family Ties
Homelessness and addiction can tear families apart,
but your support creates the opportunity for our
men to rebuild those relationships. Our resident Mike
reconnected with his son a month after he moved in
to Earl’s Place. Mike shares, “Since I’ve been at Earl’s
Place, positive things have been happening. This is
really new to me, because I’ve never been a father. I’m
happy…It’s going to be a part of my journey…If I wasn’t
here, [meeting my son] probably wouldn’t be happen-
ing. Being here, I’m able to focus on what I have to do.
If I wasn’t here, I’d probably be back on the street. And
I’d be in a negative frame of mind. And I’d probably be
using [drugs]. When I start using…nothing matters. I
would have been repeating my cycle, back over.”

ANNUAL BENEFIT DINNER: Thanks to everyone who helped make our Everyone Has a Story Dinner and Silent Auction a success!
Special thanks to our sponsors: TMDG, LLC, St. John’s United Church of Christ, Flowers and Fancies, Brian Frank and Ronald Frank: Lexington National Insurance Corporation.
The evening was filled with stories of new beginnings. Linda Emerick and her husband, Joe Arsenault, shared their getting involved with Earl’s Place story. Joe said, “The image of someone standing alone and then connecting with others to move his life to a different place was an image that really affected me.”
That sums up what you, Joe, Linda and the many others who support Earl’s Place do – provide opportunities the men could never have imagined, let alone gain access to on their own, so they can thrive and not just survive.
RESOLUTION RUN 2014: By now, you probably know where to find us on January 1…That’s right, at the Resolution Run in Patterson Park! We were fortunate to have another good weather day and runners, walkers, volunteers, and encouragers filled the park.
Thank you to our sponsors: Chesapeake Association United Church of Christ (UCC), First & St. Stephen’s UCC, Immanuel UCC, Central Atlantic Conference UCC, Scott Kreger: RBC Wealth Management, David Counts, Robert Olsen and Bruce Swanson, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, United Evangelical UCC, Canton Club Health and Fitness, Gerry’s Tire Service, Thomas Hoffman, CLU, CHFC, IAR and Patterson Park Baptist Church.
You continue to help make this a great event and provided much-needed funds for men who have resolved to a new way of life. Thank you!
“Earl’s Place helped me change my life.” —Program alumni Chris S.
“I could just tell that Earl’s Place was one of it’s kind.” —Program alumni Colin C.
