Creating a Template in Microsoft Word

You have created a document for everyone in your department to use, but you don’t want them to be able to change the original. So, you need to save the document as a template.
Start by pressing F12 on the top right hand of your keyboard.

This should take you to your default save location.
From the Save as Type drop down, choose Word template.

You will probably find that the computer defaults to the Custom Office Templates folder. You may need to navigate to your work area before saving.

A document template is recognisable by the orange band above the icon as shown here.

When the document is edited and saved the Save As window opens, leaving your original template unchanged.
