Creating a RefWorks Account
Go to http://refworks.ucalgary.ca
Click on Login to Refworks
Click on RefWorks 2.0
Choose Sign up for an individual account

Create your account. You may create as many accounts as you wish.
If you are off campus you must obtain and enter the Group Code to access RefWorks. Use your UCIT account information obtain the Group Code.

Import records directly from online databases: Medline (OVID):
Direct Import: OVID example
For our example we will use the OVID database Medline.
Open Internet Explorer – this is the best browser for importing
Choose Online Resources – Medicine from the U of C library homepage.
Choose Medline from the list of databases
Do your search To complete the Direct Import, click on Export in the box directly beneath the search box:
Choose RefWorks from the dropdown menu, then Complete Reference. Click on Export Citations.

The records will be imported into RefWorks
Importing from Medline (OVID) via text file:
Choose .txt when exporting. Choose Complete Reference. Click on Export Citations.
Save the text file to your computer.
In RefWorks choose File – Import

Saving a Text File and Using a Filter: PubMed example
Some databases do not have the capability for Direct Export. We will be using PubMed as an example of this type of database.
In Internet Explorer, type www.pubmed.gov into the URL box.
Do your search in the search box and click on GO.
Once you have selected some records, click on Send to: File and choose MEDLINE as the format.
Save the file as a .txt file on your desktop. Must be a txt file!

In RefWorks choose File – Import from the top menu bar.
Choose NLM PubMed as the Import Filter / Data Source. The database will also change to PubMed.
Click on the Browse button to locate the text file.
Specify the folder you want the records to go into (optional) and click on Import.
Importing from Google Scholar:
Go to http://scholar.google.ca/
Click on the Scholar Preferences link
Choose Show links to import citations into and Choose RefWorks
Click on Save Preferences

In Google Scholar click on the Import into Refworks link
In the menu box beside In Folder, select the folder where you want to save the reference. Click on Save Reference.
Manually Entering References:
Choose References – Add New
Add information to correct fields. Be sure to choose the correct reference type.
Searching Online Databases / Online Catalogs from within RefWorks:
Choose Search – Online Catalog or Database

Best to use only for very simple searches or finding individual records. Searching within your RefWorks account:
Choose Search – Advanced Search
References: Organizing Folders:
Rename, delete or clear folders – Click on Folders

Viewing / Editing References:
Accessing Full Text Articles via SFX:
Click on the SFX button beside record
Adding Attachments:
Click on the Edit button. Click the Browse button beside Attachments and locate the file.
Click Add Attachment and Save File. Attachment size limit per file: 20 MB Attachment size limit per account: 100 MB Sharing Folders:
Click on the Share tab
Choose the folder you want to share

Complete the share form and click on Save. Close dialog box
Select the email icon for the folder you want to share.
The folder will be emailed to the person you want to share it with.

Duplicates:
Choose View – Duplicates – Exact Duplicates
Before deleting duplicates ensure that you are not deleting from different folders.
The duplicate search covers the entire account – you cannot search individual folders for duplicates.
Adding Output Styles to your “Favorites” for bibliographies:
Choose Bibliography – Output Style Manager

Select the output style you want to add and click on the green arrow to the Favorites list.
Writing Your Paper and Creating Your Bibliography:
Using Write-N-Cite:
Write-N-Cite – program must be downloaded – instructions available in Help
Open Write-N-Cite. Open Word – write your paper. When you want to insert a reference go to Write-N-Cite and click on the Cite button beside the reference you want to enter.
It will appear in your paper like this:

To create the bibliography:
When you have finished writing your paper, make a copy. On the copy develop the bibliography.
Go to Write-N-Cite. Click on Bibliography – Choose the output style you want – click on Create Bibliography
Transferring Records from RefWorks to EndNote:
Choose References – Export
Choose Bibliographic Software as the export format, and which references you want to include. Click on Export.
Save the file to your computer.
