Comparisons

•Composite volcanoes produce a different ,thicker lava than regular volcanoes.

•Composite volcanoes are much steeper because the lava doesn't travel very far and builds up on the sides of the volcanoes.

•Composite volcanoes do not erupt as frequently as other volcanoes do.

•Composite volcanoes are known for their eruptions, that can be so huge they have the power to destroy the volcano.

Types of Lava the Volcano Produces

The composite volcano has three types of lavas: andesite, dacite and rhyolite. Compared to other volcanoes, the eruptions of the composite volcano are much stronger and much more violent.

Andesite: It is dark colored and fine grained and can be found in lava flows. It is made up of many minerals such as silica, iron, and magnesium.

Dacite: It is light colored and becomes very thick when erupted from a volcano at temperatures between 800 and 1000°C.

Rhyolite: It is light colored, fine grained and very thick. It often has amazing patterns ranging from light greens, reds, tans and browns. When it hardens it has a glasslike texture.

The Volcano in History and Why it Stands out Today

• Composite Volcanoes are deep-sided large volcanoes built of layers of lava flowing through them.

• They also are composed of volcanic ash, cinders, blocks and bombs and rise about 8,000 ft. above standard other volcanic heights.

• Some of the nicest mountains in the world are composite volcanoes–examples of which include Mount Fuji in Japan, Mount Cotopaxi in Ecuador, Mount Shasta in California, Mount Hood in Oregon, and Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier in Washington.

• When a composite volcano becomes dormant, erosion begins to destroy its cone.

• They are constructed by different types of erosions that occur over hundreds of thousands of years.

• Erosion can begin to reshape and deform the cone of the volcano, causing it to stand higher than it normally would.
