“A whole bookshelf of the immortals”—that was what publisher J. M. Dent aimed to make available and affordableto every reader when he founded the Everyman’s Library in 1906.

While Everyman’s Library has continued to realize Dent’sambition more than one hundred years later—publishing every-thing from Aeschylus to Atwood—we are particularly proud ofthe line of Contemporary Classics that we began in 1995.

The Contemporary Classics series represents, quite simply, the best literature of our times, in beautifully packaged hardcov-ers meant to stand the test of time. These are works from the pastcentury that have achieved the status of modern classics, and thewriters form an all-star lineup that few publishers can match. They range from such icons as James Joyce and Virginia Woolf toliving legends like Toni Morrison, John Updike, Salman Rushdie, and Margaret Atwood, and to giants of international literature aswell, from Gabriel García Márquez to Naguib Mahfouz.

J. M. Dent wanted to appeal to “every kind of reader,” and inthat tradition we offer every kind of classic, from the lightheartedwit of P. G. Wodehouse to the dark humor of Roald Dahl, fromnoir classics by Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler to non-fiction masterpieces such as the essays of Albert Camus andGeorge Orwell.

Our editions are often the only hardcover edition available. We offer many unique omnibus collections, such as John Updike’sRabbit novels, a selection of Alice Munro’s own favorite storiesfrom across her career, and the only single-volume, illustrated edition of the collected works of Kahlil Gibran.

We hope they will help you fill your own bookshelves witha permanent library of the immortals of our own time.

In 1905, Joseph Dent resolved to publish a library ofworld literature that would appeal to “every kind ofreader: the worker, the student, the cultured man,

the child, the man and the woman.” He envisioned abalanced selection of classics and other worthy books, from the popular to the specialized, that would combineto create the perfect library so that “a man may be intel-lectually rich for life.”

In 1991, Everyman’s Library was relaunched with thesupport of Alfred A. Knopf in the United States. Therevived library featured a fine, easy-to-read typographicdesign, sewn cloth bindings, acid-free paper, silk ribbon-markers, and substantial new introductions andchronologies by leading scholars and writers. Pride andPrejudice was the first of 50 titles to be published inSeptember 1991, and within twelve months 130 titleshad appeared, including such major twentieth-centuryclassics as Joyce’s Ulysses, Kafka’s The Trial, andPasternak’s Doctor Zhivago, none of which had previouslybeen published in Everyman’s Library.

By the 100th Anniversary in 2006 the list of Everyman’sLibrary authors included Chinua Achebe, Isabel Allende,Penelope Fitzgerald, Patricia Highsmith, CormacMcCarthy, Toni Morrison, Vladimir Nabokov, SalmanRushdie, John Updike, and Evelyn Waugh. AndEveryman’s Library continues to grow today, fulfillingDent’s wish by creating a catalog that few publishers canrival in paperback and of course none in hardcover.

“The edition of record.” —JOHN UPDIKE
