At Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center, we are proud to bring you many exciting opportunities to enrich your life through the visual arts in 2015! During Winter & Spring session, the Hui is offering over 100 classes & workshops in painting, drawing, jewelry, printmaking, photography, digital media, ceramics, glassblowing, and more! Personally, I find great joy in taking a few moments out of my day to

visit the Hui’s Open Studios to see all the exciting work being made—whether it’s a purple starfish being blown to life in our new glassblowing studio or an intricately carved silver ring being shined to perfection in the jewelry studio. We have an incredibly talented artist community at the Hui and we’re so thrilled to be able to offer opportunities for everyone, regardless of age or artistic ability, to participate in the visual arts. I strongly encourage you to stop by the Hui and take a look for yourself or invite a friend to sign up for a class with you! I also ask you to please consider a donation to the Hui’s Annual Fund! It’s not too late to give and every gift, no matter the size, makes a tremendous difference. Open Studios Visiting Artists Margot MyersBellingham, WashingtonJanuary 3 - 13

Margot B. Myers makes visual work that reflects her relationship with the natural world and is influenced by the rural landscapes where she has lived and worked. She spends summers in her family-operated commercial fish camp on the Nushagak River in Alaska’s Bristol Bay. This formative experience and her curiosity about natural systems are the forces that propel the development of her aesthetic. She uses various media to create work that is characteristically delicate, fluid, vital, and elegant. In addition to making works on paper, Margot creates installations that incorporate textiles, ceramics, papers, film, and site-specific drawings on diverse materials. She earned BAs in Art and Spanish from Walla Walla College, and an MFA in Printmaking from New Mexico State University. This class will introduce students to the basics of binding and dyeing on silk. Students may experiment with small pieces of fabric before beginning their final project of a finished silk scarf. Students will have access to a full range of colors for their dye projects and will be encouraged to layer various shibori techniques to produce a unique and complex final wearable piece. Batik Drawing #908Monday, Wednesday & Friday, 3 daysJanuary 5, 7 & 9 / 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Students will learn the basics of drawing with hot wax resist, hand painting dye techniques, fabric preparation, and wax removal. Students will work for three days to complete a layered drawing in a color palette of their choice on finely woven cotton fabric. Traditional techniques and tools will be introduced, however students with some experience with wax resist, dye, or drawing can use this class to further develop their skills. Printmaking Exploration: Develop & Expand Your Techniques! #909Tuesdays & Thursday, 3 daysJanuary 6, 8 & 13 / 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Join this class and you’ll have an opportunity to develop existing imagery and work in new ways. During instruction time, new techniques will be introduced that students can use to enhance their own work. Chin collé, sugar lift, drypoint, monoprint painting, whiteground and softground will be taught using test plates. Students will be shown how to make grounds from scratch and will be given recipe hand outs to use for future projects. Students will also be given direction on how to further develop existing images with these new techniques. Jeff Juhlin is a nationally recognized artist who has been working primarily with encaustic for the past ten years. Discover the luminous and translucent quality of encaustic painting! Students will learn the basics of an ancient painting technique that uses hot beeswax mixed with resin and pigment. Robert Regis Dvorák is a professional speaker, painter, and teacher. He has given over 2000 presentations promoting creative thinking, personal awareness, imagination, vision, and risk taking. Robert received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Illinois and a Master of Architecture degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He was awarded a two year Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome for post-graduate study. Robert was a professor of architecture for seven years at the University of Oregon and for two years at the University of California, Berkeley. Dorothy CochranWoodland Park, New JerseyFebruary 6 & 7

Dorothy Cochran is a well-known East Coast printmaker, acknowledged for her expertise and broad command of multiple print methods. A two-time recipient of a NJ State Council on the Arts fellowship, she has taught at Columbia University, City University of New York, and Manhattan Graphics Center. She is currently a faculty member at The Montclair Art Museum. Her work is represented in both private and public art collections throughout the United States, including The New York Public Library, Prudential Life Insurance, Valley Hospital, and the Zimmerli Museum of Rutgers University. Recent exhibitions include shows at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk, CT, the Art Museum of Southwest University in Minnesota, and Franklin54 Gallery in New York City. She is a popular lecturer and workshop leader with a dedicated following and is a featured presenter at the International Encaustic Conference in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Experiments with Encaustic Collagraph #915Friday & Saturday, 2 daysFebruary 6 & 7 / 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Discover and embrace this compelling non-toxic printmaking process! Engaging experimentation, artists will use hot wax to create their printmaking matrix and be challenged to enhance their print practice. The fluid nature of the collagraph method is appealing for its versatility, painterly effect, and ease of manipulation. Wax is applied to a plexiglass substrate using gestural brushwork then further carved, scraped, and incised for textural effects. Found objects can be stamped and pushed into the surface; linear elements created with hot tools, tapes, and stencils may be used for precise geometry and image definition. This technique can accommodate both abstract and realistic imagery. Plates will be printed with Akua soy based inks in both intaglio and relief on fine art papers. The class will also explore layered monotypes and chine collé applications. Advanced Encaustic Workshop #914Saturday, Sunday & Monday, 3 daysJanuary 31, February 1 & 2 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

In this workshop designed for those artists who have some prior experience with encaustic, participants will have the opportunity to further refine and develop skills with basic encaustic techniques and explore other more advanced techniques. This workshop will emphasize working with diverse materials that can be incorporated into artwork, including paper, fabric, metal leaf, and foil. Jeff will also focus on creating and working with rust on silk and paper, using natural hairs and other fibers, and incorporating techniques that create line, texture, and transparent color layering. Drawing from life is a challenging, but rewarding and valuable venture for artists and creative minds working in any medium! In this class, students will be given a supportive environment to try their hand at different perspectives and styles using large still life scenes set up in the classroom. The class will talk about composing a drawing, how to show an object’s three-dimensionality, how to place objects in space with adjacent objects, and rendering light and shadow. Students should bring their preferred drawing utensils, including pencils, ink, colored pencils, pastels, etc. (avoid materials with extensive set up requirements such as oil paint). Megan McGlynn is a draughtsman and wood sculptor. She received her BFA from University of Pennsylvania, a certificate in Sculpture from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and attended the design-oriented atelier program, Barnstone Studios. As a partner in Philadelphia-based design/build firm Dubinsky Forman & Associates, she works alongside architects and designers to render project ideas and build models. Whether you’re creating a still life, landscape, or abstraction, understanding the rules of perspective will create new depths in your work. Perspective gives the impression of height, width, and depth in relation to other objects. Geoffrey Dubinsky is a skilled metal sculptor and fabricator. He received his BFA in sculpture from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and started his own company, Dubinsky Iron Works. There are countless ways to join metals together. This class will take a look at several styles of connections, including brazing, welding, rivets, drilling, and tapping. Through these methods, students will learn about important distinctions, strengths, and limitations of different kinds of metals. This class will look at a wide range of metal finishes for a myriad of applications. Students will learn how to choose and execute appropriate patinas for their work, using heat, chemical reactions, abrasives, and more. We will go through the processes of prepping the metal, creating the patina, and sealing/maintaining the work for long-lasting durability. Students are encouraged to bring in their own metalwork to be finished, but it is not required. Japanese Pottery Techniques #921Saturday & Sunday, 2 daysFebruary 21 & 22 / 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

In this workshop, Ken Matsuzaki will focus on throwing techniques to create Japanese wares, i.e. tea bowl (macchawan) and sake bottle (tokkuri). He will teach students how to make a Japanese-style teapot (kyusu) and how to coil a flower vase. Ken will demonstrate in the mornings and work with students in the afternoons. Ken MatsuzakiMashiko, JapanFebruary 21 & 22

Ken Matsuzaki received a degree in Ceramic Art from Tamagawa University School of Fine Arts, Tokyo. After graduating in 1972, he moved to Mashiko to apprentice with National Living Treasure Tatsuzo Shimaoka (who himself had moved to Mashiko to study with Shoji Hamada). After a five-year apprenticeship, Matsuzaki established his own kiln, Yuushin Gama, down the road from Tatsuzo Shimaoka. Although his approach is very contemporary, Ken’s works have a strong grounding in the Mingei philosophy. His work introduces a focus on the Oribe style with yohen, shino, and oribe glazing. Ken is currently the president of the Mashiko Potters Association. His pottery is among the collections of major galleries and museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Worcester Museum of Art, and the Tikotin Museum in Israel. He has exhibited widely in Japan, the United States, and the UK.

Charles Cohan received his MFA in printmaking from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has taught workshops at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Pilchuck Glass School, Anderson Ranch Art Center, Pyramid Atlantic, Whanganui Polytechnic in New Zealand, Canberra Glassworks/Megalo Printmakers, and the University of South Australia. He has received research grants from the U.S. Department of State, the Helpmann Foundation, and the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Andrew earned his AB in Art History from Vassar College and his dual-honors MFA/MS degrees in Painting and Art History from Pratt Institute. Since 2006, Rose has been an instructor of classes and seminars in oil painting and professional practices at the Honolulu Academy of Arts’ Linekona School, now known as the Honolulu Museum of Art School. Dalani Tanahy is a native of San Diego, California with maternal roots from Waikapu, Maui. A lifelong artist in many media, she was drawn to kapa making over 15 years ago and stayed with it because of its diversity and rareness. Dalani’s favorite kapa to make are the ones people will use, whether a pa‘u to wear for a wedding, a baby’s blanket, or burial kapa, she feels proudest of the kapa that is made for actual use. She is known for making soft and pliable kapa. With kapa education always being at the forefront of her work, she enjoys teaching students about the ingenuity, patience, and artistry of not only Hawaiians, but all of our ancestors who respected and worked with the ‘aina. Students will learn how to create a logo for a business or other creative application. Logos will be suitable for use in print collateral, silk-screen printing, and web pages. These workshops will give you new inspiration, techniques, and helpful skills that will enhance your studio practice. Students in Argentium Granulated Hollow Bead will work with a sheet of Argentium Silver to cut two large disks, which can then be formed into a lentil shaped bead that can then be decorated with granules and fused to form a large hollow bead. In Surface Decoration, students will learn to create a custom stamp tool from a steel rod that can add a unique touch to your jewelry designs. In Tool Maintenance, students will learn useful and money-saving tips and ways to keep tools clean, polished, oiled and up to speed in our Maui climate. Bring in your favorite shell, sea glass, or sentimental object and we’ll turn it into a necklace! Participants will develop important motor skills and dexterity and use pliers to create beautiful and unique pieces. Your gift to the Hui’s Annual Fund helps us unlock creativity on Maui!

With your help and support, the Hui creates outstanding visual arts education programs and services for our Maui community. In 2014, the Hui educated over 950 adults and 900 children in our state-of-the-art studios, and continued to bring Hui programs into the community through partnerships with Maui’s schools and local community organizations. We are so proud of all that we have accomplished, but we need your help now to keep the visual arts alive on Maui through a contribution to our Annual Fund.

The Annual Fund is vital to sustaining the Hui’s mission to unlock creativity through exceptional visual arts education and to enhance this endeavor through the preservation of the historical Kaluanui Estate. 100% of the dollars raised through the Annual Fund go back into our local community by enabling us to: • Offer access to the studios, gardens, and galleries • Provide financial aid for families in need • Create a safe and fully-equipped art-making environment• Maintain our historical grounds for public use

We believe that each and every one of us carries the potential to benefit from a life engaged in the visual arts. It is our job at the Hui to provide the necessary tools to nurture creative spirits, but we need your help! Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a tremendous difference in our ability to serve the community by providing invaluable opportunities in the visual arts, helping to sustain the Hui’s historical legacy, and ensuring that future generations will continue to enjoy Kaluanui and the visual arts.

6 Things to Do at Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center...on any day of the week!

Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit visual arts education organization located in beautiful Upcountry Maui. Since 1934, Hui No‘eau has provided an accessible space for the community to experience and enjoy the visual arts. Throughout the year, the Hui hosts art classes for adults and children, artist lectures, fine art exhibitions, events, tours, and educational outreach programs. Working artist studios are nestled across the grounds and a gallery shop featuring artwork created by Hui members is located in the main house. As a community-based organization, we thank you for helping us continue our mission of unlocking creativity through exceptional visual arts education and enhancing this endeavor through the preservation of the historical Kaluanui Estate.

See a professional gallery exhibition: With five different shows scheduled for 2015, you’ll be sure to view some outstanding work created by artists from Maui, Hawai‘i and beyond! With many of the exhibited works available for purchase, you might even find that perfect piece to add to your collection.

Browse the gift shop: You’ll feel like you’ve discovered your very own treasure trove of handmade items and fine art when you shop at the Hui’s Gallery Shop at Kaluanui. Many of our items are made right on-site by local artists in our Open Studios program. You’ll also get to see inside a historical Maui home!

Tour the Gardens: We invite you to explore the Hui’s beautiful and historical Kaluanui Estate! You are welcome to create your own route or if you’d rather reserve a guide ($12/person with advance reservations), we are happy to oblige! About an hour in duration, this walking tour will give you some fascinating new historical and botanical information!

Join us “On the Wild Side:” Bring your keiki (or become a kid again, yourself!) as you view the “Stickwork” sculpture created by 2011 Artist in Residence Patrick Dougherty. The curved forms created from invasive and non-native trees will have your imagination soaring away!

Capture a Piece of History: The Hui has collaborated with the Haleakala Ranch Company to create an exhibit featuring hand-woven rawhide lariats and traditional boots worn by its original Spanish-trained “paniolo” cowboys—an important part of our Upcountry Maui heritage.
