It is true that when you promote an affiliate product (a product created by someone else that you promote and earn a commision for every sale from it), you will be just like the many others promoting that same product. They all use the same website. But if you create your own, you can stand out from the pack AND get the chance to collect emails and build your list before prospects are entered in the mailing list of the product’s owner!

This is what happens when you promote some one else’s product using the provided website:

You get your affiliate link (a special link you will use to promote the product), then you send traffic to that page. When someone arrives to the page and purchase, the product owner gets their email address and deliver the product. You instead, will collect a commission for your efforts, nothing else!

But, again.... you need your own website. Having your own website gives you the opportunity to build your own web presence which is key in this business.

Promoting affiliate products is a great business system for the newcomers to the online business because, when you are starting out, chances are you don’t have your own product yet. A Word About Domain Nameservers

Once you get your domain name and your hosting service, you will need to re-direct or point your domain name to your server. You need to do this to tell the domain where is your storage place, to look for your website. Your hosting will send you via email what nameserver you need to use.

It is something like this: NS1.NETFIRMDNS.COM and NS2.NETFIRMDNS.COM

When you purchased your domain, they will be pointing by default to the domain registrars’ hosting servers and you need to change the settings to make them point to whatever hosting server is assigned to you by your hosting company.

If you used CheapNames.com to get your domain name as we suggested earlier, login to the backend, select from the left menu Domains / Domain Manager. You will see a list of all your domain names. Click on the link to your new domain name.

On the window that opens, just about the middle of the page, you will see the link Set Nameserver right under DNS Manager column.

After you click on Set Nameservers link, a pop up will open. Make sure you select the option: I have specific nameservers for my domains, and under the boxes for Nameserver 1 and Nameserver 2, enter the corresponding nameservers given to you by your hosting provider.

Now it’s when the fun starts... It is now when you start designing your own webpage.

Do you remember what we talked about affiliate marketing webpages? Well, we mentioned that it was to your advantage to create your own webpage instead of just promoting with the affiliate product’s website. Since you want to be ahead of the pack, you will create your own website.

To create a basic website you, will need a web editor (HTML editor. HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language). This web editor workes somewhat like a word processor with a few differences which you will notice.

You will download this software to your computer, and once you finish your webiste, you will upload it (send it) to your hosting server to make it available for the entire world to see!

There are many website editors around. There is Adobe Dreamweaver, Microsoft Frontpage, Net Editor, etc. But they all come with a price tag.

The one we are going to use is totally free. It’s called Kompozer. This is a WYSIWYG (“what you see is what you get”) type of web editor. This fascilitate the process of desinging and editing your pages. So, lets go ahead and download Kompozer.

After you click on the Download button, Komposer will show you the following message alerting you that the download will start automatically in 5 seconds. See image below.

When download starts, a popup window will open prompting you where do you want to save the file at. Make sure you notice the path where the file will be saved to.

Notice that I am using Windows 7, so your window might look a little different than mine.

Once you know the location where you will be saving this zip file, click on the Save button and the file will be saved. The file you just downloaded is a compressed file with the extension ZIP (the three lettters after the period on the file name. This means that you need a way to extract or decompress it.

To extract it, navigate in your computer to the folder where the file was saved at and right-click with the mouse on the file. The following poupup will come up. Now, since I have a program that helps me compress and decompress files and folders easily, my window looks like the image below. I really recommend you to download WinRar free compression program. You will be using this a lot in your business.

Some versions of Windows comes with a simpler decompression program and when you right-click with the mouse on the zip file, you will get a windows saying: Welcome to the Compress (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard). Just click the Next button if this is the option you see.

Next, select the folder where you want to decomperss the file to. Once you select the place, click the Next button to start extracting the files. At the end, you will be asked if you want to view the folder. Make sure the option is checked and click the Finish button.

Now that you have the folder unzipped and opened, locate the file on the list titled Kompozer.exe (exe is the extension for executable files).

If you double-click on the file, Kompozer will open but then every time you want to use Kompozer, you will have to navigate to this folder to double-click again on the Kompozer.exe file to start it.

So, what I want you to do is to create a short-cut to this file and place it on your Desktop for easy access. To create the shortcut, right-click on the Kompozer.exe file and select from the list: Create short cut.

A new shortcut is created. Now drag this file (Kompozer.exe - Shortcut) to your desktop and when you are ready to open the file all you have to do is double click on this new shortcut located on your desktop.

By now, you should have everything you need to start creating your webpage. You should have your domain name and your hosting account already; and you should have already updated the nameservers to point to your hosting server.

It is easy to get distracted and start playing around with the web editor, but if you dedicate yourself to follow the steps as I’ll be explaining here, you will have your first webpage immediately. That fast and easy!

Let’s Get Started!

Open Kompozer. Remember the shortcut we created on the desktop?

Double-click on it to open the program.

It will open with the Tips of the day window opened. If you don’t want this window to appear every time you open Kompozer, just uncheck where it says “Show this tips at startup” and click the Close button.

After you close the tips window, you will see at the top of the Komposer’s window, the menu settings available to you. From here you will get access to all options available that will help you with the creation and formatting of your website.

If you don’t see the Site Manager column to the left as you see on the image below, press the F9 key on your keyboard. This is a toggle option you can turn on and off.

When you first open Komposer, it will open a blank “untitled’ page. So, the first thing you need to do is to give it a name or title. Notice that the name of the current page name also appears at the very top right of the window.

Select form the main menu: Format > Page Title and Properties:

Whatever title you enter on the Page Properties, will also appear at the top of the browswer window and will be picked up by search engines.

It is recommended that you use keywords as part of the desciption; but for the sake of this tutorial, I entered This is My First Web Page (see previous image).

Notice that after giving it a page title, it now appears at the very top of the window and the page tab as it would appear on a web browser.

I have seen so many web pages in which their creators just forget this important aspect for SEO; so get in the habit of doing this as your first step before starting to design any page.

Saving Files Website StructureBefore we save our new page, lets talk a little bit about the structure of a website. This is very important to learn. So many people don’t pay attention to this, and when they upload their files to the web and open their pages, all images are missing, and they just see empty boxes where their images were supposed to be.

Keep these points in mind:

1. All files (pages and content) should be saved in the same folder in your computer

2. Use different folders for each website3. The main page or home page of your website is usually called index.htm

or index.html. Either will work fine.

What I always do is to create a folder under My Documents named Websites and in that folder is where I create the individual folders for each individual website.

Saving Files So, let’s save our first page as index.html in a folder named Test.

Select from the main menu File > Save. A new window will open asking you where you want to save the file and the name you want to give it to it.

In our sample, we’ll save it under My Documents and create a new folder called Websites and in there, we will create the folder Test which is where we want to save our website.

And for file name, replace the title This is My First Web Page.html to index.html and click Save.

If you open your Wiindows Explorer and navigate to the new folder, you will see your new file named index.html.

Now that we have the structure in place and our blank page titled index.html, in the next section we’ll publish the page to the web in order to have all settings in place before we start editing our page and creating new pages.

In this section, you will learn how to prepare your site to be published on the web. Yes, I know we still need to polish our webspage, add more content, images, etc. But, let’s go through the basics first.

When we setup our site to be published, Kompozer will manage the links between each pages, and all images so that when we transfer our site, the references to each image and links don’t get broken and you don’t end up with missing images and a navigation that doesn’t work as it had happened to many people.

Trying to send their pages to the web is a common problem most face because they don’t understand it. But you are about to learn how easy it actually is.

Select from the main menu: File > Publish as

Site Name will show your site’s name or folder name as you previously assigned.

File Name should say index.html

Click on the Settings tab. Under the section Web Site Information, enter your domain name under HTTP address of your domain name.

You need to preceed your domain name with the prefix http://

NOTE: In my sample, I will publish the page in a folder named Test because I already have content at the root of the domain. If you want to publish your pages on the domain’s root, you would type here only the domain name, like http://yourdomain.com/ instead of http://yourdomain.com/foldername/.

Under Publishing Server, for Publishing address, you will type the prefix ftp:// and the ftp address given to you by your hosting company. It’s usually with this format:

ftp://ftp.yourdomainame.com/public_html/

Generally your websites will be stored on the hosting server in a directory called public_html. Everything you place in there will be public. Outside this directory, it’s not accessible via the web. But don’t worry about this. The important thing you need to know is that your website will be under /public_htm/ on the server even though you access your website directly through the domain name without having to enter public_html.

Now, enter your User name and Password under the corresponding boxes and check the box Save Password so that you don’t be prompted for the password everytime you are going to publish a page. Now, click on the Publish button.

If everything goes well, your site will be published.

Testing Your Newly Uploaded Web Page

Let’s take a look at our page on the web to make sure everything is working fine before proceeding. Open your web browser and type your domain name. If your website was installed in a folder, then make sure you enter the folder name as well. But you probably installed it on the root.

Contratulations! You have your first web page on the web, even though it is still simple plain text.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand all this at the moment. The important thing is to be able to upload your website to your domain.

And you just accomplished that.

You have accomplished what many don’t because they quit and didn’t bother to learn this. So, congratulations for this accomplishment. This shows me that you are really serious about wanting to make money online.

NOTE - Possible errors and how to solve them:

1. If you got any error message, it could be possible that your domain has not been routed to your hosting yet. Depending on the domain registrar and your hosting company, this process can take anywhere from 24-72 hours. In my case, the hosting we use and recommended to you, and the domain registrar we suggested to you route or point the domain to our hosting immediately.

2. Another reason why you might get an error is that maybe you entered the name-servers incorrectly. Double check this before proceeding if you got an error. Go to Page 23.

3. Make sure you name your home page ‘index.htm’ or ‘index.html’. Check the spelling. Any of these two files is what the web browswer will look for if they exists. If they were mispelled, you will get a not found error message on the browser.

4. If you are not hosting with us or the provider we suggested to you, make sure if you needed to enter the folder path /public_html/ as part of the FTP address. The mayority of hosting services uses the /public_html/ or /www/ folder to place your web pages into. So check with them.

This section was in my opinion the hardest one to master. So if you were able to upload your web page to the web, you will be able to create your website in no time as everything will be much easier from this point forward.

Fonts and Images BasicsLet’s start now to make our page more presentable.

FontsWhen selecting fonts, we must stick to what’s called ‘web safe fonts’. These fonts are fonts that are standard and available in any computers nowadays. Using these fonts will ensure your webpage displays as you intended it to be; at least, as close as possible.

If you chose non web save fonts and someone doesn’t have that fancy font installed on their computer, your font will be replaced with one of the standard web fonts and your layout will look weird. This is why it’s very important to stick to web safe fonts.

Good web safe standard font choices are:

Lets change the entire paragraphs to Arial font. To highlight everything, place your cursor at the beginning of the first word, then click and drag the mouse until the end of the paragraphs. See the image on the next page.

Now, let’s change the text while the test is still selected.

From the main menu, select Format > Font and scroll to select Arial font. See the image below.

As you could see, everything has been centered on the page and the font is Arial.Click anywhere else outside the text to turn the highlight off.

Now let’s change the first line, the title, to a bigger font because this is a Headline.

Hightlight the first line. Then, click a couple of times on the font size icon. The icon with the letter A and an arrow pointing down is to decrease the font size and the one with the arrow pointing up is to increase the size of your font.

If you want to break up a line without adding paragraph, place the cursor at the position you would like to break it apart and then press Shift+Enter keys on your keyboard.

Our page is definitely looking much better, right?

Adding an ImageYou will import an image form your computer. Remember I told you that all files needed to be placed under the same folder.

In our exercise, it is the Test folder on the computer. So go ahead and copy an image you have and place it under your website’s folder on your computer. In the sample below, I am dragging my image to the Test folder where my website files are.

Now that your image is located in the same folder as your web page, you are ready to place it on your page. This is why it’s important to plan ahead your website before you start building it. You need to have a clear vision of how you want your page to look like and create your images beforehand.

Importing an Image onto the Page

Place the cursor between the second and the third paragraph. If there is no space in between, place the cursor after the second paragraph and then press Enter to add a blank line. Now, to insert an image, click on the Image icon.

On the popup window that opens, browse to the location on your hard drive where your image is located. Then, click on the image to select it. Then click Open.

While we are still on the Image Properties window, assign now an Alternate text to the image. Otherwise, Kompozer won’t allow you to continue.

The Alternate text is what’s shows up when people roll over an image. It’s also for text readers. After filling out this information, click the OK button. The image will be inserted at the cursor position.

If the image was too big, you can resize it with the square handles that appear around the image when selected. Just click and drag any of it’s corner points while holding the Shift key on your keyboard to constrain its proportion and avoid distorting the image.

A Note About Images

Even though you can resize an image using the handles, it is recommended that you have the images at the exact dimension before placing them in your web page.

The reason is because, even though you resize the image and make it smaller, the image will still be loading at the actual size and then the browswer will resize it to your specification; so the file size will still be the same, not smaller.

Notice that now your image is also listed on the left panel, under Site Manager.

It is good to get into the habit of constantly saving your changes. You don’t want to loose all your hard work and have to start all over.

Let’s save the file now.

Saving Your WorkClick on the Save button from the top main menu. It will ask you if you want to overwrite the file. Answer Yes.

See previous image. The folder name where you are storing your website, your web page and image are now showing up under the Site Manager panel located to the left of the Kompozer’s window.

If you don’t see the list, click on the plus (+) sign next to folder name. It will show your entire web structure.

Changing the Page’s Background and Text ColorsTo change the page background’s color, select from the main menu Format > Page Colors and Background.

To customize the colors, click on the Use custom colors radio button (see image on the previous page) to make the options available as shown below. To change a color, click on the color swatch box.

Notice we have changed the backround. Make sure the color you pick doesn’t compete with the rest of your design and that all text is readable.

Save and PublishLet’s publish the page to the web, but first, let’s save our work. This time select Publish as from the File menu.

The reason why we are going to use Publish as instead of Publish is because now we have an image and we need to let Komposer know what to do with it; if we want to publish it too or not.

Under the Publish Tab, check the box next to Include images and other files.

Then click the Publish button to send both our webpage and our image. Komposer will show a progress window that will close after publishing is completed. See the image on the next page.

Creating Links to Other PagesIn this section we are going to create two more pages and link them. We are going to create an About page and a News page. At the end of this excercise, we will have 2 pages and three links on both pages. One of the links will link to an outside webpage.

Place the cursor at the end of the page (leave one or two blank lines between the last paragraph and where you will insert the links. These links will be the navigation menu so that visitors can navigate between the pages in our website.

Click on the Insert > Insert Link from the main menu in Kompozer. The following window will open.

On the first box (Link Text) type Home (refer to the previous image). This will be the label of our link, what people will see on your page.

Our Home page will always be the index.html, which is our main web page. So, on the next field (Link Location), type index.html. Then click OK.

You will see on your page the newly created link titled Home as shown below.

Now that the link has been created, place the cursor after the link and press the Spacebar on your keyboard 5 times. This time we are going to create a link for a page that doesn’t exist yet. This will be the About page.

Open the link menu again (Insert > Link). On the first box, type About Us and on the second box, type about.html in smaller caps and not spaces. Then click Ok.

Links are case sensitive. So may sure they are all in lower cases and no space between the page name and the .html

Repeat the process to create our last link titled News with a page name: news.html

Save your work.

Creating the Other PagesLet’s create the About page. There are several ways to create pages. One of them is to click on the New icon at the top of the menu. This will create a blank page. Notice that once the blank page is created, you can switch between all opened pages by ticking their respective tab.

Add content to your About page and create the respective links as we did before. Then save your page as about.html

On the Home page, add the link to your new About page and make sure that your About page has the links to both the Home and the About page also.

Publish the pages and test them from your browser. You should be able to navigate between both pages by clicking on their respective links.

Another way to start a new page is by copying from an existing one. This way you preserve the links - you wouldn’t have to recreate them again and again for all pages. In addition, you will be preserving the overall design of your website and have a consistent look.

By now you should have a clear understanding of how to create a single web page and and entire website with several pages all linked between each others.

Adding an Outbound linkFor the third link, I want you to link it to an external website (a page outside your domain - known as an outbound link). Since we created the link titled News when we created the Home page, we are going to edit this link to point it instead to another website.

Click on the home page tab (titled This is My First Web Page) to switch to it - your Home page, remember? Hightlight the link News, then click on the Link button at the top on the menu area.

The same window we saw before will open. Just replace the name of the page with the address of the web page of your choise. This time, you need to enter the full path or web address of the page since this page is outside of your domain. In other words, it must start with http:// and then the domain name. Enter in this example: http://createawebsitein4hours.com

We now need to make this link open the page in a new window. This is important because you don’t want people to leave your website; instead, we want this page to open in a new browser window.

Under the Target section, tick the box Link is to be opened and make sure it says ‘in a new window’. Then click Ok. See image below:

You can add links to images the same way by just clicking on the image and then the Link button to add a link, either to another of your pages or to an outiside page.

Save your work and publish it to the web. You should have now two webpages with three links on them. Your home page should look similar to this page.

How to Resize a Web Page

In the following section, you will learn how to constrain the width of you page so that it doesn’t look so wide. As of now, our pages expands to the entire width of the browser window, but we want it to be of a fixed width and have empty space to each side of the page while the content area appears centered on the browser window.

The way you can accomplish this is by using Div tags or Tables. To make things simple for you, we will only work with Tables as Div tags are a little bit more complicated.

In Kompozer, we’ll create a new blank page. Click the New icon to create a blank page.

Now select from the menu: Insert > Table.

The following window shown to the right will open.

Now, click on the tab named Precisely and enter the number 1 for row and 1 for column.

For Width, enter 600 pixels.

What this means is that we are creating a table of one column and one row, with a width of 600 pixel maximum.

Click OK. A box will appear of the specified width and it will be left aligned. We want to make it centered.

Double-click anywhere inside the table. The following window will appear.

Click on the Table tab to switch to it, as the window was opened with the Cells tab active.

Now, the table will appear centered on the page after you click the OK button.

Now, click outside the table. We will change the background colors of the page and the table to the one we asign on the other pages we previously created.

Select from the menu Format > Page Colors and Background and select the background color of your choise. This will change the entire page’s background just as we did on previous lessons.

To change the table’s background, double-click inside the table to open the same window we previously opened when we changed its size.

Under the Table tab, notice that at the end of the label Background Color, the default is set to: Let page color show through. This is why the page’s background color is showing also on the table.

Click on the box (the color swatch) to open the color picker and select white. Then, click the OK button.

The default alignment of the page is set to left aligned. Make sure that before you start typing, you select the Center button as we learned before.

You can use this technique to highlight certain areas of text you want to draw attention to. Just as have seen throughout this e-book.

Inserting the little Table

Place the cursor after the image and hit the Enter key twice to create room for our new table. The table will be inserted at the current cursor location.

From the menu, select Insert > Table

This time, instead of creating the table with an exact with, we are going to indicate it’s size as a percentage of the with of the parent table.

The new table was inserted inside the main table as left aligned.

Change the table’s alignment to Center just as we did with the main table on previous steps.

Double click anywhere inside the new table to open its properties again. Click on the Table tab. From the Table Alignment drop-down box, select Center.

Thenk click OK.
