The Royal Commission survey of English
Hospitals: 1660 to 1948 identifi ed the King
Edward VII Sanatorium as ‘one of the three
fi nest [hospitals] of its time’. Its design embraced
head on the new philosophy for treating the sick.
Rest, relaxation, fresh air and light were top of the
agenda; consequently every aspect of the ‘King’s
Sanatorium’ was designed with this in mind.
The elevations would have been amongst the most
complicated and expensive examples of a building
envelope employing a remarkable mixture of
stone, brick, tile, metal and timber dressing. It is
an impressive demonstration of just how many
variations on the arts and crafts theme can be
achieved in each elevation.
In addition to the main hospital building, there are
a number of equally important historic buildings
that form part of the family of buildings.
The Grade II* Chapel is unique. It follows an
L-shaped plan and was designed specifi cally to
provide separate wings for ladies and gentlemen,
an important consideration at the time. The
Chapel features stained glass windows hailed for
their simplicity in elegance and colour as well as
extensive use of stonework, lead work and specialist
plasterwork inside the large open vaulted spaces.
The Engine House, Lodge and Motor House were
all designed by Charles Holden at the same time
as the Sanatorium and use the same architectural
language with the form adjusted to demonstrate
the function of the building.

Biography
Antony Gormley was born in London in 1950. Upon completing a degree
in archaeology, anthropology and the history of art at Trinity College,
Cambridge, he traveled to India, returning to London three years later to study
at the Central School of Art, Goldsmiths College and the Slade School of Art.
Winner of the Turner Prize in 1994, Antony Gormley is acclaimed
internationally. With solo and group exhibitions in Europe, Scandinavia,
America, Japan and Australia, his sculptures have been acquired by many public
and private collections around the world. In 1997 Gormley was awarded the
OBE for services to sculpture.
