i t i s d u e t o t h e c o m m o n c o l d o r a l l e r g y , s m o k i n g , c e r t a i n
i n d u s t r i a l f u m e s , a n d i n t r a n a s a l p o l y p s o r c a r c i n o m a . Pe r -
n i c i o u s a n e m i a , d i a b e t e s , a n d v i t a m i n A d e f i c i e n c y c a u s e
d i m i n i s h e d o l f a c t o r y a c u i t y . P e r n i c i o u s a n e m i a c a n a l s o c a u s e
anosmia . H y p o o s m i a c a n o c c u r a f t e r t o t a l l a r y n g e c t o m y .
The reasons are not known .
Anosmia m a y b e b i l a t e r a l o r u n i l a t e r a l . T h e p a t i e n t c a nr e c o g n i z e b i l a t e r a l a n o s m i a , b u t u n i l a t e r a l a n o s m i a i s u s u -
a l l y n o t p e r c e i v e d . H e a d t r a u m a i s p r o b a b l y t h e m o s t f r e -
q u e n t c a u s e , w i t h a n i n c i d e n c e o f 7. 5 % i n o n e l a r g e s e r i e s .
