The incident ocurred just be-fore 4 a.m. on Sunday, June 16, 2013.

Cranbrook RCMP re-sponded to a report of a double stabbing in the area of 17th Avenue and 8th Street North, Cran-brook. Investigation re-

vealed two Cranbrook residents were walking in the area when they were approached by an

unknown male who ac-cused them of property crime in the area. The unknown male became increasingly belligerent leading to an unpro-voked attack on both victims.

The Honourable Judith Guichon, 29th Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia made a few stops in Cranbrook on Thursday on a four day trip through the East Kootenay. One of those stops was Laurie Middle School, where Guichon talked to stu-dents about her duties as a representative of Her Majesty the Queen. Guichon also visited Joseph Creek Care Village and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 24.

of the Cranbrook-Kim-berley will be surging this weekend, as 260 cy-clists converge for the much-anticipated Koo-tenay Rockies Gran Fondo.

The public is advised that the North Star Rails To Trails will be closed for a short while on Sunday — from 9 a.m. to noon — to accom-modate the event, which is featuring 260 riders. Cyclists have

come from as far away as Ottawa, Ontario, from across Western Canada, and from Washington state.

The event is being presented by the Sun-rise Rotary Club and Western Financial

Group.“We’re thrilled with

the response,” said Glen Dobie, Chair of the event. “It’s exceeded our expectations — we’re prepared for it and we’re looking for-ward to it.”

The event will be hosted by St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino and will encompass some of the most spec-tacular scenery and hospitality in the re-gion.

Riders will choose

from three different course lengths — 52 km (the Piccolo Fondo), 102 km (the Medio Fondo) or 152 km (the Gran Fondo) — and ride at their own pace. The three different rides leave St. Eugene at 10 minute intervals, start-ing with the piccolo at 9 a.m.

The ride starts off from the St. Eugene Re-sort, comes back to Cranbrook via Mission Road, hooks up with the Rails to Trails at

Echo Field Road, then heads north to Kimber-ley. The Gran and Medio rides proceed via Meadowbrook to Wasa, then south down to Fort Steele.

At the Fort Steele junction, Gran riders will do a 25-kilometre loop out to the Koote-nay Trout Hatchery, and back to St. Eugene. All riders should be completed by late after-noon.

On Sept. 19-22 the Rocky Mountain Naturalists will be hosting the Federation of BC Naturalists Fall Conference in Cranbrook. The confer-ence will bring in naturalists from all over British Colum-bia to talk about what they are doing and for the natural-ists in the area to show their work.

Greg Ross, a member of the Rocky Mountain Natural-ist and Kootenay co-ordina-

tor for BC Nature (Federation of BC Naturalists), said the meeting is centred around what the various clubs are doing across the province.

“So here in Cranbrook we get to show off Elizabeth Lake,” Ross said. “The Rocky Mountain Naturalists have been pretty instrumental in preserving the area.”

He said they have been putting in trails, restoring na-tive grasslands and general stewarding the city’s portion of Elizabeth Lake.

“The other clubs will come in and talk about the things that they’ve done.”

There will also be awards given to certain naturalists.

Daryl Calder, a member of the local non-profit society, said they sent an invite to all of the naturalist clubs of the province to attend the four-day event.

Calder said they are ex-pecting 75-90 registrants. Many of those B.C. natural-ists are active retired profes-sionals who haven’t been in

the Southeast part of B.C. in years.

The Rocky Mountain Nat-uralists were formed in the 1980s and work toward pre-serving, enhancing and doc-umenting the wide array of native animals, birds and in-sects found in the East Koo-tenay.

The full schedule can be found at www.bcnature.ca. There are many events planned, from presentations on the Rocky Mountain Trench and the biology of

Leopard Frogs, to early morning birding at Elizabeth Lake and Jimsmith Lake. There’s even a butterfly hunt along the Kootenay River and a field trip on the native plants in the Cranbrook Community Forest. Registra-tion takes place at the Pres-tige Inn on Thursday from 6 – 7:30 p.m., Friday from 7 – 8:45 a.m. and Saturday at 8:45 a.m.

Calder said the public can sign up for the conference.

“The one condition is that

they have to be a member of the BC Naturalists Federa-tion,” he said.

The membership costs $20 and is available through www.bcnature.ca.

The Rocky Mountain Nat-uralists were also instrumen-tal in putting together the new kiosk at the upgraded Elizabeth Lake pavilion.

BC Nature is a federation of local natural history groups and represents over 52 local nature clubs throughout B.C.

Naturalists holding conference this month in Cranbrook

More than 100 local volunteers are taking part to mount the event. Aid stations and sup-port vehicles are also taking part, so the mo-toring public is advised to be aware of the cy-clists and share the road. Traffic control and signage will be in place throughout the route. Residents are also encouraged to greet the riders who will be converging on the community this week-end, and help make them feel welcome.

Sunrise Rotary invit-ed other service groups from the community to help out manning the aid stations. These in-clude the Mark Creek Lions, the Wasa and District Lions, the Kim-berley Rotary Club, the Cranbrook Rotary Club, and the staff of Falkins Insurance, which is af-fliated with Western Fi-

nancial Group.Funds raised from

the event will be used to enhance and maintain the Rails to Trails sys-tem as well as support other local community service projects,” said Dobie.

“Members of the Cranbrook Sunrise Ro-tary Club had a dream to create a cycling event that would utilize the fabulous Rails to Trails system between the cit-ies of Cranbrook and Kimberley,” Dobie said. “We also hope the Gran Fondo will en-courage healthier life-styles, support our local businesses, and serve as a fundraiser for our Rotary Club.

“We have an oppor-tunity for the Gran Fondo to become a major tourism draw for our area. Let’s be sure to treat our visitors well.”

be a big day for a local product who is riding at the top of the Canadian Country Music circles.

Dean Brody is up for seven nominations and a live broadcast perfor-mance at the 2013 Ca-nadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Awards on September 8.

The awards show, taking place in Edmon-ton, will be broadcast on Sunday, Sept. 8, on CBC Television, starting at 6 p.m. Mountain Time. Gord Bamford, Terri Clark, Johnny Reid and George Canyon are among the other nomi-nees.

The Jaffray product and MBSS grad has had an impressive last cou-ple of years. Brody was named the Number 1 Most Played Canadian Country Artist at radio in both 2011 and 2012, he charted 11 Top 10 singles, and released back-to-back Album of the Year wins at the CCMAs (Trail In Life and Dirt). Brody has won six CCMA Awards and earned two JUNO Award nominations.

This week, Brody un-veiled the details for his fourth studio album Crop Circles (Open Road Recordings/Uni-

versal Music Canada). Slated for release on No-vember 5, 2013, Crop Circles features his

brand new single “Bounty” with guest vo-calist Lindi Ortega. Ac-cording to a pres release

from Strut Entertain-ment, the single has re-ceived the Number 1 Most Added spot overall

and Number 1 Most Added spot at Country radio for the second week in a row.

Glacier Resorts Ltd. is holding off on its in-junction against the Cit-izens for Jumbo Wild checkpoint group on the Farnham Creek road, as work gets underway on summer skiing and lift construction at the gla-cier.

The company’s law-yer made a motion for indefinite adjournment at a hearing on the in-junction in B.C. Su-preme Court in Vancou-ver on Monday, August 26, which the judge granted. In the after-math, both sides in the case each said the other can’t claim victory.

The camp is still in place on the road, but Glacier Resorts Ltd. vice-president Grant Costello has been up to Farnham Glacier with a work crew and excavator and says work is pro-ceeding as planned.

“I don’t know how they (the checkpoint group) could claim vic-tory,” said Glacier Resort Ltd.’s Vancouver-based lawyer Greg Tucker.

“The judge awarded us costs in any event.”

The injunction appli-cation had only one per-sonally named defen-dant — checkpoint group member and Johnsons Landing resi-dent Robert Meaney — although it also listed John and Jane Doe and persons unknown.

said it’s inaccurate to say the developers won the case.

“They (Glacier Re-sorts Ltd.) brought an application for injunc-tion and they didn’t pro-ceed with it. To me, there’s no way that they won,” said Judah Harri-son. “It is apparent that the matter is not re-solved. The (resort) pro-ponents and their coun-sel attempted to bully and catch the citizens (at the camp) off guard and failed. They tried to push us around and that didn’t happen. Their ability to get an injunc-tion is in question. It’s easy to say you won when you didn’t have a

hearing.”But according to Mr.

Tucker, the motion to adjourn indefinitely was made because Mr. Costello along with a work crew and excavator – the same crew and ex-cavator that did not go past the camp on Satur-day, August 10th — was able to get up to Farn-ham Glacier unimpeded last weekend.

“We (Glacier Resorts Ltd.) brought an appli-cation, served notice, prepared the materials and as of last week this blockade was moved, taken down. When the hearing came on, we said we think there should be an adjourn-

ment. It’s a bit anti-cli-matic because the hear-ing did not proceed. But we won’t have to pro-ceed with it ever if there’s no further attempts to block access,” said Mr. Tucker.

All parties are in the same legal place they were before the pro-ceedings started, said the defendant’s Vancou-ver-based main legal counsel Jason Gratl.

“They (the develop-ers) applied for an in-junction and didn’t get one. And if they apply for one again, the defen-dants are poised to shred the plaintiff’s evi-dence,” said Mr. Gratl, adding that seeking an injunction creates a continual threat of seri-ous, immediate conse-quences and — if grant-ed — removes police discretion on whether or not to arrest protes-tors.

“Ordinarily at this point in an injunction case the project propo-nent has acting orders in place and the protestors live with the ongoing threat of criminal con-tempt charges against them. The project pro-ponent here failed to ob-tain the threat advan-tage they were seeking in the first place,” he said. “The injunction order usually means punishment will be probable, swift and harsh if the injunction order is breached. Here Glacier Resorts Ltd. failed to obtain those advantages.”

Camp members characterized the mo-tion to adjourn as back-ing down.

But according to Mr. Tucker, the developers did not back down in court.

“I have to say that there is just no merit at all to that position. We backed off because the blockade’s gone,” said Mr. Tucker. “It (adjourn-ing) seemed to be the correct do under the cir-cumstances.”

emergency at the airport on Monda,y Sept. 9, 2013 from 12:30 p.m. until 3 p.m.

The exercise will involve a variety of agencies including the RCMP, Cranbrook Search and Res-cue, Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services, the BC Ambulance Service, Air Canada Express, Pacif-ic Coastal Airlines, CATSA, the Canadian Rockies International Airport, the City of Cranbrook and Impalla Security. Students from the Mount Baker Secondary School drama program will be partici-pating as mock passengers.

The exercise will be a training opportunity for airport, airline and emergency response person-nel. It will also allow airport personnel to evaluate the Emergency Plan.

Members of the public should not be alarmed if they see emergency vehicles at the airport on after-noon of the September 9.

The exercise will not have any impact on sched-uled flights or other airport activity.

The BC Coroners Service has announced an in-quest into the death of Patrick Roy Wilder.

Wilder, aged 58, of Fairmont Hot Springs, died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound after an interaction with RCMP members on May 10, 2011, at his home. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The inquest will take place the week of Oct. 21, 2013, at the Provincial Court building in Invermere.

Presiding coroner Larry Marzinzik and a jury will hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses to determine the facts surrounding this death.

While the jury may not, by law, make any find-ings of legal responsibility, it will have the opportu-nity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances in the future.

Can money buy happiness? Most of us would respond with a resounding “No!” Many of us have had that les-

son drummed into us from our earliest days. I can’t count the number of times my father told me that money would never buy me happiness.

It’s been one of those philosophical truisms which we’ve grown up with. The ancient Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus believed that “Wealth con-sists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants.”

This kind of attitude has also provided plenty of fodder for comedians like Groucho Marx: “While money can’t buy happiness, it certainly lets you choose your own form of misery.”

It came as quite a surprise to me when I heard a TED talk by Michael Norton of the Harvard Business School. You can hear the results of his research at www.TED.com. He begs to differ with this attitude. As a result of some very clever and creative ex-periments he and his team devised to try and measure whether money can in fact buy happiness, he has learned some sur-prising things.

What he has learned is that money can indeed buy happiness. The problem is not in the money. The problem comes with how we spend it. “If you think money can’t buy happiness, you’re just not spending it right,” he says.

He asks us to imagine how we normally spend our money. Usually, we tend to

spend money mostly on ourselves. When people fantasize about winning the lottery, they often imagine how all that money will set them free from their daily worries. They think of what they would get for them-selves.

Often, for lottery winners, the story is quite different. When people win the lottery, they often go broke very quickly. They begin to resent family mem-bers and friends who ask for financial help, and so people who have won the lottery often become anti–social,

simply to protect themselves against all those who approach them with their hands out. But that’s a different column.

Norton devised one experiment with UBC undergraduates. He gave those who agreed to participate different amounts of money. One group was told to spend the money on themselves. Buy whatever they liked with the $5 or the $20 they were given. So they did — makeup, or some-thing they wanted, or a cup of Starbuck’s. The other group was told to spend the money on someone else.

At the end of the day, his team inter-viewed the students and asked them how happy their purchases had made them.

Those who spent the money on them-selves were neither more nor less happy. It just was something they did as part of the experiment. The other group, however, re-ported that they felt happier about them-selves at the end of the day.

Other experiments had very similar re-sults. It didn’t matter how much money

people were given, or what they bought. The only thing which made a difference was whether you spent the money on yourself, or on someone else.

They wondered if it was a cultural phe-nomenon, so they replicated the experi-ments in poorer countries such as Uganda. They found exactly the same results. Peo-ple spent the money differently, but the only thing which made a difference was whether you spent the money on yourself, or on someone else.

It doesn’t matter how you spend the money. It doesn’t matter how much money you spend. What makes a significant dif-ference is whether you spend the money on yourself or on another person.

Can money buy happiness? Yes … pro-vided you spend the money on someone other than yourself.

People who give money to charity are happier than people who don’t. This seems to be universally true.

An ancient Christian writer once wrote, “Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” That was the apostle Paul, in 2 Corinthians 9. It seems he may have been on to some-thing.

We often talk about “giving until it hurts”. This kind of research stands those opinions on their heads. So let me invite you buy some happiness. Don’t give until it hurts. “Give — and keep on giving — until you can’t stop smiling.”

In 2005, archaeologists were trying to solve one of Poland’s biggest mysteries, one the country’s citizens have been

trying to solve for centuries: Where had they buried Copernicus? At the time of his death in 1543, Nicolaus Copernicus had yet to become the household name he is today. At the time, nobody thought to record where his body had been buried.

Copernicus spent his adult life working as an ad-ministrator at the Catholic diocese in Northern Poland. Tradition stated he was bur-ied underneath the church he worked at, but no one knew for sure.

When archaeologists began to dig in 2005, they discovered what they hoped were his bones. They were from a 70-year-old male (the same age of Copernicus when he died), and the skull had a mark which corresponded with a scar Coperni-cus was reported to have.

Unfortunately, their conclusions were not definite. While the bones they uncov-ered still possessed viable DNA, Coperni-cus had no living descendants with which to compare it to.

Part of the reason Copernicus was put to rest so haphazardly was that his book, ‘On the Revolution of Heavenly Spears,’ wasn’t published until after his death. His (correct) idea that the sun, and not the earth, was the center of our solar system didn’t become a heretical work and shat-ter scientific thought until years later.

Today, 600 original copies of this book still exist, and astronomer Owen Gin-

gerich has examined each and every one (it only took him 30 years). Gingerich’s purpose was to see what people first thought of Copernicus’ radical theory, as most of the original owners wrote down their thoughts in the book’s margins.

Knowing of his research interests, a rare book dealer from Paris asked Gingerich if he had ever heard of a library named the House of Mary Magdalene. He had not, but the book dealer told him that an earlier Copernicus work, ‘First Account,’ had come

on the market, featuring a House of Mary Magdalene library stamp. Since he couldn’t afford the book’s 1.5 million dol-lar price tag, Gingerich put it out of his mind.

Years later, while perusing various works owned by Johannes Kepler at Wro-claw University, he noticed most of Ke-pler’s books featured the Mary Magdalene stamp. He immediately requested to see the University’s copy of Copernicus’ ‘First Account,’ but it could not be found. He told the university he knew they wouldn’t find it; it had been stolen and was current-ly for sale in Paris. Interpol later recovered it.

While he was busy alerting Wroclaw of their book theft, Gingerich heard about the search for Copernicus’ DNA. A fellow astronomer had suggested a search amongst Copernicus’s personal library (at Uppsala University in Sweden), hoping to find a bloodstain somewhere amongst the

pages. While this seemed unlikely, Gingerich

knew of a book — Johannes Stoeffler’s ‘Great Roman Calender’—which Coperni-cus had owned. Between two pages which Copernicus had scribbled down his own astronomical thoughts, four of his hairs still remained.

In 2010 the Polish government was pleased to announce the DNA from the hairs matched the DNA from the uncov-ered bones. And unlike his original one, Copernicus’ new funeral was a massive global event, complete with a large granite monument…hopefully ensuring no one will forget where he is buried.

Police and ICBC are launching a month-long cam-paign to deter distracted driv-ing, the third leading cause of fatal car crashes in the prov-ince after speed and impaired driving.

Driver distraction is blamed as a factor in 91 fatalities prov-ince-wide each year. Trans-portation ministry officials es-timate drivers are four times likelier to crash when talking on a hand-held phone while driving and 23 times more likely to be in a crash if texting.

Enforcement by officers handing out $167 fines will be stepped up throughout Sep-tember, according to police.

Officials kicked off the cam-paign Thursday using a simu-lator to show the effect of dis-tractions on a driver.

“Driving is a complex task that requires your full atten-tion,” ICBC interim president

Mark Blucher said. “When you’re distracted behind the wheel your reaction time is

significantly reduced. Dis-tracted driving is a common cause of rear-end crashes and

injuries – there is no safe fol-lowing distance when your mind is not on the road.”

A 2012 survey for ICBC found B.C. motorists consider texting while driving to be just as risky as drinking and driv-ing, yet 40 per cent of those who own cellphones admit they’ve used a hand-held phone while driving.

ICBC says its statistics count use of communications or video equipment among the sources of driver distrac-tion, along with driver inatten-tion and other sources of in-ternal or external distraction.

ICBC injury payouts reached $1.9 billion in 2012, up $165 million from the pre-vious year and a $400 million increase over five years. The Crown corporation cited that increase as the main reason for its application to raise pre-miums 4.9 per cent, effective Nov. 1.

CALGARY - One of the NHL’s biggest per-sonalities vows to work in the background for the Calgary Flames.

Veteran hockey exec-utive Brian Burke was named the team’s presi-dent of hockey opera-tions, a position the Flames created for him in an effort to return to the playoffs after a four-year absence.

Burke will “assume overall responsibility of the sport side of the Calgary Flames.”

General manager Jay Feaster will report to Burke, while Ken King remains president and CEO of the Calgary Sports and Entertain-ment Corporation.

In addition to the Flames, the company

encompasses the American Hockey League’s Abbotsford Heat, the Western Hockey League’s Cal-gary Hitmen, the Cana-dian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders and the National La-crosse League’s Rough-necks.

Burke’s description of himself on Twitter is “a dash of truculence”. He’s brutally honest and unfiltered, so re-porters both love and loathe him depending on the day.

“I don’t intend to be front and centre,” Burke said Thursday during a news conference at the Scotiabank Saddle-dome. “That would be a nice break after being front and centre and getting into a lot of little scraps in the media.

“I know people think I need to be driving the bus all the time. I’m ac-tually a pretty good teammate.

“The guy you should talk to every day should be the coach. The trans-actional guy, if you make a trade . . . the guy that should explain it should be the guy that

pulls the trigger on the trade and that’s Jay.”

Flames owners ar-en’t normally present at team announcements, but chairman Murray Edwards and others in the ownership group sat in the front row of seats Thursday.

Burke was fired as president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs in January. He had been working as a part-time scout with

the Anaheim Ducks since February.

Reporting to Burke instead of King is the only change Feaster ex-pected in his job de-scription.

“To be able to bring somebody in who has won a Stanley Cup, who has taken a team to that lofty level and who has been in the game in as many capacities as Brian has been through-out his career, to be able

to tap into that wealth of knowledge on a daily basis, it’s a great thing,” Feaster said.

“I endorse it as the GM.”

A dual citizen of the United States and Can-ada, Burke sits on the board of directors for Rugby Canada and is the director of player personnel for the Amer-ican men’s hockey team at the 2014 Sochi Olym-pics.

Local rugby player makes impact with provincial squad

With some hard work and grit, local rugby player Conor Sinclair managed upgrade him-self to make the top pro-vincial U14 rugby team.

Sinclair, who was pencilled in to a lower tier provincial ‘B’ team—Team White—managed to impress coaches with the top tier Team Gold enough to crack the squad.

Team Gold romped through a tournament in the summer against competition from New-foundland, Washington State and central Cana-da.

Sinclair’s squad managed to make it into the final, but lost out to the top-tier Team Blue, fielded by Ontario.

Even though Sin-clair’s team lost, he still felt that the B.C. Gold squad had a lot of tal-ented players.

“All teams were very talented, but I do think that Gold had a major advantage over other teams in the tourna-ment,” Sinclair said.

The B.C. Rugby pro-gram had 60 U14 kids in total with two teams, while some of were going to play with the Newfoundland squad to even out numbers.

The whole week and a half event featured the tryouts before the tour-nament, and Sinclair worked did everything he could over the five-day practice schedule that kept him out on the

pitch for up to six hours each session.

He had previously at-tended a rugby sevens tournament in Victoria, and was mentored by the Team B.C. coach for that event. When Sin-clair began tryouts, he knew the coach would be watching him with close eyes.

“When we went into the six-hour days of training, he started no-ticing me a little more, I was working my hardest every day,” Sinclair said.

“To make it onto Gold, yeah, it was really cool.”

Sinclair will still stay involved at the provin-cial level with some more camps later in the fall down in the Lower Mainland.

As for rugby in Cran-brook, Conor’s dad, Sean Sinclair, who is a teacher with the school district, is hoping to get some after-school rugby programs going at Lau-rie and Parkland middle schools.

He’s hoping to get at least a rugby sevens team for boys and girls off the ground with an after school practice twice a week.

Those Grade 8 or Grade 9 students could also come out to Mount Baker rugby practices in the spring depending on what numbers are like, he added.

Any students inter-ested in joining a rugby team at their school can talk to their athletic di-rector.

Kootenay didn’t cap-italize on both power play opportunities, while the Americans were denied on three of their own.

“We did exactly what we wanted to do coming out of the gate, we just couldn’t sustain it,” said Ice head coach Ryan McGill. “We made some mental errors with the puck in the neutral zone and then once it got to the D-zone, it was a bit of a Chinese fire drill, but nothing that we can’t work on.”

Kootenay came out strong in the opening period, outshooting Tri-City 15-9, with Martin getting his goal just after the halfway mark, with an assist by former American Clint Fil-brandt.

A few minutes later, Tri-City knotted it back up on Playfair’s unas-sisted effort.

Going into the sec-ond period, momentum shifted as the Americans outshot Kootenay 19-8 on the clock and Messi-er took the lead with seven minutes remain-ing.

McCue scored in the final frame, and added an empty netter for a pair of goals to seal up the score at 4-1

The Ice defensive corps also suffered a blow when veteran Landon Peel went down with an undisclosed in-jury.

“We had a young group in there and I think we had one veter-an defenceman go down—Peel got hurt—so after that, our defence looked young and inex-perienced, but it is the first game,” said McGill.

“Not to make any ex-cuses, but we’re a week behind and we just need to get a little better to-morrow and hopefully get better the next day.”

Kootenay takes on

the Spokane Chiefs on Friday and the Everett Silvertips on Saturday to close out the exhibition tournament in Kenne-wick.

Win or lose, the goal is still evaluating the re-maining prospects on the roster, said McGill.

“I’ve got three line-ups ready for these three games, with a purpose to see certain guys and we’re not varying from that plan,” McGill said.

Dear Annie: I am involved with a wonder-ful man who has three grown children. The youngest, age 25, is still in college. He seems to have made college his career. Dad has put himself into debt putting his children through school. This young man was failing his classes, so he decided to take a break and moved back into his father’s home six months ago. He does not have a job, nor is he putting any ef-fort into getting one. He recently mentioned that he is planning to go back to school, and it seems that Dad is again going to pay for it. I think it is time to cut the cord. What ad-vice do you have for the 25-year-old who is not ready to become a productive citizen? What about the father who feels it is his re-sponsibility to keep paying for his child’s education? And what about me? I want us to spend the rest of our lives together, but I have no desire to be financially and emotionally drained by a child who doesn’t want to grow up. -- Stuck Between Dear Stuck: Obviously, a 25-year-old should get a job and help support himself. If Dad is willing to help pay for tuition, that’s fine, but Dad should not encourage dependency by being overly accommodating, allowing him to live rent-free while he sits around all day. His son needs to be held accountable. But they aren’t asking for our advice. So this is for you: This is not your child, and you need to be careful about making demands. Your basic choice is to stay or to go. Are you willing to wait it out, hoping the young man will eventually get it together? Talk gently to your boyfriend about your concerns, helping him understand that the best gift he could give his son is to teach him to be indepen-dent. But don’t issue any ultimatums unless you are willing to follow through. Dear Annie: For the past 20 years, my wife and I have hosted an annual summer week-end for a small group of friends. Several years ago, one of our guests brought along her 10-year-old cousin. She didn’t ask. The sec-ond time she did this, I asked her not to. She apologized, and I thought that was the end of it. This year, however, she called the night be-fore and announced that she and a friend would be there in the morning. I was seeth-ing. Had she asked, we would have said yes, but I resent the disregard for our efforts in cooking and preparing. To my astonishment, all of the other guests thought I was overreacting and the wom-an hadn’t done anything wrong. Where has common courtesy gone? To me, her failure to ask for our OK was blatantly rude. My friends say I should apologize. -- Why Ask When You Can Just Take Dear Why: Your friends are incorrect. No one should bring uninvited guests. It is con-siderate to ask beforehand whether it is con-venient. You can explain this more thorough-ly to your guests, saying they cannot bring anyone without asking you first. Or you can choose to consider it a compliment that your friends treat your home as their own, wheth-er you like it or not. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Outcast Sister,” whose sisters resent that she is being paid to care for her mother. Please tell her that the best thing her family can do is see an eldercare lawyer or specialist. When my mother passed away last year, I left my home and career to move in with my elderly father and help him continue his quality of life. My sisters and I consulted an eldercare lawyer, and we are glad we did. The laws are very complicated, and small mis-takes now can be very costly later. Eva Mae BousquetMay 29, 1918 -

September 1, 2013

It’s with sadness that the family of Eva Mae announce her passing at Joseph Creek Care Village on September 1st with her family at her side.

Eva spent the first 18 years of her life in the

Grand Forks, B.C. area, the next 20 years in Rossland, 34 years in Nelson and the final 18 years in Cranbrook.

Gran loved her music, gardening, curling, bridge, but most of all her family.

Eva was predeceased by her husband Frenchy, of 63 years, brother’s Frank (Tim), George (Laura), Bill (Nellie), Elmer (Sadie) Thompson, son-in-law George Takahashi and her loving dog Gator.

She is survived by her half sisters, Emma and Nell, daughter Elina (Henry), son Leonard (Ivana), grandson Jarrett (Laura), granddaughters Melanie (Mani), Allyson (Jamie) and 6 great grandchildren, Austin, Emerson, Jack, Jasmine, Lee and Benjamin. Also, daughter-in-law Jeannie and special friends Shirley and Ennis.

A special thank-you to the wonderful staff at Joseph Creek Care Village for the loving care of Eva Mae the last 6 years.
