Editor’s Pick – p.6Details… Fun, quirky

details can be tiny things, but they can

have a huge impact on a piece. Those spectacles on Claudia’s snow angel

are just fabulous!

O ur December issue is traditionally our Christmas issue,so Seasons Greetings to one and all!

We have plenty of seasonal mixed media wonderfulness to share with you this month, but before I give you a taste of what’s inside, I want to explain a little about this ‘Mixed Media’ phrase we keep using!

At its most basic, mixed media simply means using more than one product on your creations. So, if you have created a card using inks, embossing and glitter, then it’s mixed media! Personally, I like to include an ‘experimental’ layer to the meaning as well… just play with lots of products and see what happens! No rules, no restrictions, just let your imagination create something unique!

I would like to say a big welcome to another new designer this month! Darcy Wilkinson is a super talented artist, and in this month’s issue, she’s showcasing her brandnew Christmas stamps she has just released withPaperArtsy (page 23).

Following the Christmassy theme, we have Christmas lights, Christmas wreaths and a whole herd of reindeer! The reindeer are the focus of our 3D Challenge this month, and werecreated from a Cardmaking Paradise template. Be sure tocheck them out on page 42, where you will also find a linkto the template itself. We would love to see the reindeeryou create!

If you love your inky techniques, check out Anna-Karin’s Masterclass, on page 70, all about glossy cardstock. There's some wonderful tips and advice to be found, not tomention a stunning project or two.

I hope all the cards and gifts have been created already, and you now have time to relax and have some crafting time just for yourselves! (and that Santa brings you lots and lots of new stash to play with!).

Project: Snow Angel Art Doll

T he design for my snow angel took form in my head when I found two pieces of whitened driftwood that reminded me of wings.

A wire construction creates the angel's backbone:one longer piece holds the head on top and get's wrapped around the stone base at the other end while the two shorter pieces hold the wings. All three were bent and curled together, to be covered up by the sewn body later. I also formed a small bow about 2cm (1") below the head to keep the body from slipping.

To paint the fabric for the body, I applied some spray paint and white and gold acrylic paints and stamped on some texture using black acrylic paint. The angel's arms were cut from fabric too and glued on using fabric glue. Hands and hair were drawn by hand and for a bit of decoration, I added a tulle collar, some star shaped sequins, glass beads and white glitter.

In the Details...

Make sure you use a stone that has a flat and wide base, as the wire will make it

wobbly if it isn't even on the bottom side!

The angel's face was stamped onto some tissue paper and glued to the driftwood using Art Podge. This way you can use your stamps on uneven objects without losing detail.

Project: Watercolour Art Journal Page

W e all love watercolours but sometimes we overlook the humble watercolour pencil. They can be used in so many different ways, but my favourite way to use them is with a brush. When I want to add

extra details or an intensity of colour, I’ll use them as pencils and pull the colour out with a brush.

To begin my project, I collaged the substrate with old book pages and added a layer of gesso before adding washes of colour with a brush and pencil to start this page off. I then blocked out the butterflies and bubbles with gesso applied through a stencil made from cutting the stamped images from a piece of paper.

There are so many ways to use watercolour pencils – don’t forget you can create flicks and drips from a pencil or brush too!

DESIGNER TIP…

If you want the lines of the stamped

image to merge with the colouring, use a water-

reactive ink like Distress inks to stamp with.

Use watercolour pencils with gesso and old book pages to create a delicately coloured collage.By Kim Dellow

1 Stamp the image with light ink, then block out the image with a layer of water.

2 Take colour from pencil with a wet brush and apply to image. Let the colour merge in the water.

3 Add more intense colours to shaded areas by using the pencil directly on the image.

Derwent Watercolour pencils are available from Derwent, www.pencils.co.uk, 01900 609585

To finish the project: Carefully stamp the bubbles with Archival ink and add the sentiments. Add a little bit of colour bleed to the wings with more colour, added with a brush. Load the brush again with colour from the pencil and fl ick it across the page to create splatters. Let it dry and add boxes to some of the words with a marker pen.

WHY NOT TRY?…

If you don’t want to work on gesso with watercolour then try

using Golden Absorbent Grounds under the

stamped areas.

DID YOU KNOW?…

watercolours.Try practising on

Prepare for the exciting countdown to Christmas by making your very own papercrafts advent calendar. By Jenny Marples

Project: Advent Calendar

F or speed I used a die to cut and fold the box pieces to form the basic construction but you could use a template instead if you’d prefer. Each of my boxes are

3.8cm (1.5 inches) wide, cut from 480gsm white card;I would recommend this weight or greater as it will make the finished calendar strong enough to last year after year.

The box size can be increased, but this will also alterthe size of the overall calendar. The boxes can of course be cut from any colour of card; I decided to keep the base layer white to coordinate with the rest of the design and added extra stamped/painted layers for

additional strength.

At around 3.2cm (1.25 inches) square, the IndigoBlu Christmas Icon images are the perfect size for decorating an advent calendar, and they are easy to cut out too!

Joy Canvas by Jaine DrakeThis mini canvas is only 10cm x 10cm, just the right size to frame the doodled Christmas tree stamp. A page of old music score paper made the perfect base, once it was torn up and collaged onto the canvas. It’s a lovely aged brown colour, so there was no need to stain it. To position the tree correctly, I die cut a circle and then stamped the design. I then added sketchy shading lines on the tree and applied plenty of glitter. I used scissors to slightly distress white crepe paper, creating a fringing, which was glued to the back of the circle. A mini doily was the perfect size to mount in a vintage style.

To finish, I used a few scrabble tiles to spell out the word 'joy' and added sticky gems for extra sparkle. It is Christmas after all!

“ The only time of year I go vintage and shabby chic is Christmas. All that old book paper and glitter

makes me very happy!”

Dazzling Christmas TreesThis issue, we’ve got a gorgeous little Christmas tree stamp for you to create seasonal treats with!

Our Angel Policy: You are free to use these stamps in any handmade projects, including those for commercial sale, provided images are hand-stamped. Jaine Drake owns copyright over the original artwork so you may not use the artwork to manufacture stamps or other products for personal or commercial use.

Altered Cardboard Tube by Jaine DrakeBy altering toilet roll tubes, you can make quick and easy Christmas decorations. First, I taped the top together and collaged with music score paper. To build my vintage theme, I used a piece of lace ribbon and added a bit of sparkle with a line of sticky gems at the top.

The rosette on the front was made by stamping the tree onto a die cut circle, which I mounted onto a second, scallop edged die cut to make it sturdier. I added more sticky gems to it and doodled shading lines on the tree. I then glued glitter around the edge and added white netting to the back. To finish, I glued the whole thing to the front of the tube and embellished with more sticky gems to give the netting a more Christmassy feel and added a die cut bottom to help it stand up.

Altered Heart Peg by Jaine DrakeI found the wooden heart on a peg in my local craft shop and originally the heart was red. I covered it with music score paper, using sand paper to neaten the edges. Even though the surface of the heart is flat, I still found it a challenge to get a perfect image with the stamp, so I decided to stamp onto tissue paper and glue the image on with gel medium. To age the white tissue paper, I used an Old Paper Distress ink all over.

To complete and add a bit of glitz, I added glitter and sticky gems and a white crepe paper ruffle.

Penny SaverS…Look out for vintage

music score books and game pieces like scrabble tiles at car boot sales or

junk shops.

“I love the hand drawn quality of this stamp design, it’s fun for all your festive projects. Why not get the kids into stamping by making Christmas cards with this lovely stamp!”

Christmas Tree Canvas by Jenny MarplesIt’s tempting to use small stamps on backgrounds or repeatedly stamp to form a pattern, but they can be the centre of attention too. Using a mini canvas to raise the tree above the rest of the canvas gave it some well deserved impact, and the lettering below helped to make it the focal point of the larger canvas.

Continuing a theme across a whole piece is important to make the design look more effective and fluid. The addition of stencilled stars beneath the layers of paint and ink enhanced the independently stamped stars. The whimsical design and subtle colour palette means this tree is not just for Christmas!

Christmas Coaster by Jenny MarplesWhen the festive season rolls around and your guests arrive, it’s so much fun to be able to provide them with drinks coasters to match your holiday décor theme!

The crackle background, dry brushed layer of translucent gold and purple splatters made the whole thing fun and colourful. To make the trees stand out, they were stamped onto coordinating red paper and adhered over the stamped background. Using paper rather than card ensures that they don’t stand too proud on the relatively flat surface. To finish, I coated with varnish to protect and preserve it for years to come.

Designer Tip…If you want to stamp a small section from any detailed stamp, tape

over the unwanted areas before you apply ink and remove before you stamp with it.

I love layers and texture, so these were very much in my mind as I played with different elements. Keeping a common theme of colour or substrate means lots of elements can be used without it becoming overwhelming.

The crackle paste was new to me, so I really wanted to try it. I was pleased by the amount of texture that was achieved. The size of the cracks is determined by the thickness of the paste, giving great variation.

Most of my stamping in this project was done onto tissue paper. The main advantage of this is that you can add stamped images to an uneven surface, such as crackle paste.

I had fun with embossing too, using the same colour powder on all three boards keeps continuity, but I was able to change it up by using open stars, filled in stars and just dipped edging.

My favourite image is the reindeer. To colour him, I used Pitt pens, which were blended with a finger. They work beautifully over Fresco paints.

My inspiration came from that little bit of sparkle that Christmas brings us at this cold and dark time of the year… glistening snow, dashes of glittering lights, decorations peeping through windows…

These cards are a pure mixed media mash up - a little bit of everything went into them! Keeping the ingredients the same but changing out the colours of the paints and style of card/layout still gives you great variety, but at the same time helps keep your focus without going overboard.

Christmas cards are a great excuse to play with glitter and I adore the star stencil by The Crafter’s Workshop, combining it with modelling paste made it just the perfect finishing touch for the background. It helped to give me the foundation I needed to apply some of that much needed Christmas sparkle!

In the Details...

Vary the consistency of different paints by diluting with water, this allows a feeling of

fading into the background, leaving foreground splats sharper.

Using white cheesecloth underneath the layers gives the cards a soft edge as well as adding extra

interest to the background.

Chipboard pieces are great for bringing out dimension. Plus they take anything

you throw at them, perfect for your mixed media adventures!

TIME SAVING IDEA…Use chalk paint for

your white splatters asit dries quicker than

other paints.

TOP TOOL…A heat gun! It’s a mustwhen adding layers

of paint.

Project: Mixed Media Christmas Ornaments

I f you have a lantern that has suffered some damage to the glass panes, this is a perfect upcycling opportunity. You can alter and decorate the lantern to your heart's content, just like I did with layers of 3D foam

shapes, crackle paste, paints and DIY shimmer mists. I make my mists subtle, as I use them for vintage aging and delicate shimmer.

You can also replace the glass panels with illusion film sheets; they reflect the light beautifully. They are also perfect for stamping! If you want toadd more colour to your images, I recommend using alcohol markers

on the reverse side – as the markers will make StazOn ink smudge. The blending pen will help you move the colour around the image.

To continue my Christmas Lights theme, I decorated a church candle and turned a giant light bulb into a bauble ornament. These projects feature stamping on tissue paper. For the light bulb, I transferred the stamped image using a dry decoupage technique, using adhesive sheets heat embossed with Kaleidoscope powder and coloured

with Inktense pencils, before being sealed with matte varnish. For the candle, I coloured my image with alcohol markers first and

then adhered it to the candle by gently melting the tissue into the wax.

The final touches were made with textural snow, Glossy Accents icicles, glittered foam dots and snowflakes. To embellish my makes, I added cheese cloth, seam binding ribbons and handmade poinsettia flowers.

Project: Origami Christmas Wreath

An Origami Christmas

Learn a simple origami technique to create effectivepaper wreaths. By Christine Dark

36 www.craftstamper.com

I made my first origami Christmas wreath a few years ago with patterned scrapbooking paper, but these days I’m more inclined to create my own papers.

To create my papers, I’ve used a lightweight card that folds well and is substantial enough to take the mediums and works well with my gelli plate.

The wreath is made up of separate folded modules and isn’t too long a process once you learn the simple folding technique. My projects are made up of eight or twelve modules and each module starts as a single piece of card. The rule for cutting the card is that the length is twice the width and this will determine the size of the completed wreath.

Origami projects are great for using up gelli plate printed papers. I added stamping to my prints using Paperbabe text stamps, which work particularly well when the stamping is random and rotated throughout the print.

This is a great project to involve children especially in the run up to Christmas…many hands make light work!

1 Cut gelli printed papers into 12 pieces measuring 14 x 7cm (approx. 51/2 x 23/2 ").

2 Fold each piece in half lengthways and crease for a crisp fold.

3 Fold each piece in half again widthways and crease for a sharp fold.

4 With open edge facing up, fold each edge down from the top at a forty five degree angle, crease well and repeat for all pieces.

5 Take two modules and with the open edge facing up, slot the point of the one into the opening in the other.

6 Adjust the pieces so that the second piece is aligned snugly against the first.

7 Continue until all twelve modules have been inserted into the wreath shape.

8 Insert the points of the final module into the openings in the first to complete the wreath.

9 As the wreath is not fixed, adjust the shape so that the inside edge is a circle.

To finish the project: After making the wreath, I created the seasonal greeting ‘joy’, using the Sizzix die and gave

it a faux molten silver finish. I added Ranger Ideology mirror stars coloured with alcohol inks and some

self-adhesive gems. To stop the modules of the wreath moving about, I added some glue dots inside the folds and then attached silver string to the back for hanging.

In this fabulous new regular, we take a closer look at some stunning artistry by Kim Costello.

“ This box canvas has many layers; I started with a patterned paper collaged base, which is only evident from the texture it's created. The Dylusion inks sprayed through stencils really pop and fibre paste, also through stencils, adds an amazing texture. With the use of my media templates and face

stamps, this piece came together effortlessly.”

The Dylusions work like magic, I have never known colour to come through

that many layers of paint! I love the subtle polka dots all over the canvas.

I’m very pleased with her dramatic make-up, I masked the eye before stamping in blue ink, the extra sparkle and gems really lend to the icy theme.

I am in awe of how clear the sentiment is, it's amazing how tissue paper disappears under the white embossing. I'm also impressed with how well it was manipulated over the fibre texture bumps.

Rockinʼ Reindeer by Riikka KovasinI printed the reindeer, cut them out and used as templates to cut two reindeer from watercolour paper. I chose watercolour paper, as it is sturdy enough to hold the weight of my embellishments and also takes colour well.

I used gel medium to add the metal embellishments and flowers to each side of the reindeer. I embellished a side at a time and left to dry in between. After leaving the whole piece to dry overnight, I then added colour using mists and Mica powders. This isn’t your average reindeer!

Reindeer Gift BagBy Chrissie StokesAs the reindeer’s body looked like bag handles, I decided to use him to create a gift bag. I reduced the size of the image so that it would fit a bag constructed from a sheet of A4 paper.

I cut out the images from card, stamped and inked them using the grunge stamp and, having coloured the whole area, clear embossed them. The bag was cut to size and stamped with the tree images, clear embossing after each stamping and adding a little inking to the top and bottom of the images. It was then scored and folded and the handles attached with strong double sided tape.

To get you excited about Christmas, we asked our talented designers to create some arty reindeer designs using the Arty Reindeer template from

Cardmaking Paradise. Created using a mixture of interesting media, colours and techniques, the artwork is fun and adventurous. Rudolf gets a makeover!

Twinkle by Tracy EassonWhat a joy it was creating this little reindeer! I decided to produce an art piece that resembled a pull along toy. I traced the template onto board, cut it out with a scalpel, then got messy with paints, glue and glitter. I then made a little sail from a skewer, wire, stamping and cut out sentiment and added bunting made from old book pages. I wanted it to look as if it were on wheels, so I used old wooden spools and a hot glue gun to create the desired effect. To finish, I added a wooden star to tie in with the ‘Twinkle’ sentiment.

Dashing Reindeer by Helen ChiltonFor my reindeer I didn't want to use brown, so I went for a brightly festive look, cutting out two reindeer from grey board and covering each side with some paper from the

Kaisercraft Fly Free Collection. Each reindeer was then foiled in gold using

Kaisercraft texture stamps and Ranger Sticky embossing

powder. To finish off, I slotted them

together and added embellishments

to make a three dimensional hanging ornament.

Rudolph by Tracy ScottI decided to create a reverse canvas so that my reindeer could sit in the recess. I started by covering the canvas with book paper and stencilled gel medium through the scribble stencil. Once dry, I painted with Green Gold and Diarylide Yellow and rubbed in Metallic Lustre and Burnt Umber to highlight the stencilling. Using the template, I cut my reindeer from a cereal packet and painted. I then tied a scrap of lace around his neck and attached to the canvas with 3D foam. For my poinsettia, I painted music paper with Quinacridone Red and cut six large and small petals from it. I glued the petals together and attached to the frame. To finish, I added pearls to the flower and frame.

Antique Rudolf by Jenny MarplesI used die cut strips of mount board to provide a strong connection between two reindeer shapes, I then covered them with coordinating ribbon. The holly leaves started my chosen vintage look - they were coloured with Distress inks and overstamped with Mega Flakes. With the intention of giving the completed project a look of aged and crazed pottery, I applied a layer of Crackle paint, emphasized the cracks with Distress stain and then added a triple coat of clear embossing powder. The reindeer looked much more lifelike and friendly with the addition of pearl eyes and an ink coloured tinsel scarf complete with jingle bells.

Project: Christmas Canvas

I enjoy making three dimensional projects tremendously! I really like how light and shadow play on the surface and the ability to mix any materials in these creations.

When I started to think about Christmas and Winter, a few things came to my mind: jingle bells, snowflakes and snowballs. The bells were found in my craft stash, snowflakes were cut from a decorative

felt ribbon and the snowballs are paper maché balls of various sizes. Combining these found or cheap things together with a few more

showy products makes an interesting combination and also helpsin the budget.

I adhered all the pieces to the canvas using gel medium and coated with white gesso. I went with a warmer colour scheme and misted the canvas with gold, peachy beige and also used tea as a colourant. The final touch to the piece was a red embossed ‘Cherish this moment’ sentiment.

Gel mediums are made of 100% acrylic polymers, which are proven to have excellent flexibility. They are in fact a glue and dry to create a durable film.

As frames for the gel medium, I used simple metal bracelets that I had in my stash. I made my first bracelet ornaments in 2012 when I stumbled upon a similar Mod Podge tutorial on the internet and decided to adapt it to use gel medium instead. When experimenting with the technique, I decided to incorporate stamped images.

For this technique it is important to have patience and follow drying times. Drying times are influenced by many factors: thickness of application, temperature, humidity and airflow conditions. Also, to get a good result, make sure to remove excess gel before the drying process starts as it may crack if left to dry slightly.

1 2 3

1 Work on a flat, non sticky surface, I used a craft sheet on a sturdy table.

2 Place a bracelet on top of the craft sheet and dot gel medium inside.

3 Spread gel evenly with a palette knife, making sure it makes contact with edges.

Step–by–step... Creating Gel Medium Ornaments

To finish the project: Paint with Tumbled Glass Distress ink. Stamp text on background with turquoise paint and stamp the reindeer with Timber Brown StazOn ink. Mask the reindeer before stamping the stars. Stamp trees with Eden Green StazOn ink. Once dry, brush Twisted Citron Distress ink on top. Stamp stars, post stamp and stitches with Timber Brown. Add accents with Twisted Citron and Gathered Twigs Distress inks using a brush. Apply white dots with a Sharpie. Add turquoise paint to the bracelets.

To finish, make a hole in the gel medium and add an open jump ring. Create a hanging loop using invisible thread and decorate with beads.

4 Use a spatula or a metal ruler to flatten the surface and wipe away excess.

5 Leave to dry for 24 hours. The gel will become more transparent as it dries.

6 When dry, gently peel off away from craft sheet.

M ost of the decoration on these bottles is on the inside so the glossy exterior remains untouched and will shine in the lights of the Christmas tree. I decided on a blue/green/red colour scheme,

accented with silver.

The number of stamps used here is minimal as they had to be small images and text in order to fit inside the bottle. The snowflakes were punched out in three different sizes and gently curved to push inside the bottle neck. Even though it's quite fiddly to attach, I've used chain to suspend them, as this makes them hang better.

The cabinet type box is made up of two box bases – I took off the lids and re-hinged the deeper bases together. I wanted the cabinet to open so that the bottles were standing up like magic potions. They can all be taken out to hang on the tree and then stored away for another year.

Cute Santa by Scrapper MyraFor this challenge I thought of a cute Santa Claus with a soft shabby look. I wanted to make a background without adding too much complexity to the project, so I used an acrylic block to stamp Distress inks and water onto patterned paper. I then cut a doily in half to use at the top and bottom of the card and stamped the sentiment on the bottom doily.I stamped Santa in the middle for guidance, then stamped and coloured separately on white cardstock. I then cut him out and attached with dimensional adhesives after tying baker’s twine in lines. I embellished with gems and sequins, and placed on light blue/green cardstock.

North PoleWelcome to our winter wonderland filled with cute creatures and cool colours! Our amazing readers and designers have crafted a beautiful collection of card just for you...

Let it Snowby Mandi ManceI decided to create a cute reindeer snow scene. Stamp the reindeer and sentiment with archival ink on watercolour paper. Use watercolour pencils to colour the reindeer and create a background. Blend the colours using a brush and water. Wipe brush between colours to keep them from getting muddy. Leave to dry. Cover the reindeer and sentiment. Mix acrylic white paint with water and splatter on your card to create snow. Add glitter glue to the nose to give it a little sparkle and finally, attach it to a white card base.

Pop Art Elvesby Giovanna ZaraDraw a line with a pencil to use as a guide when placing your stamped images. Ink the elf stamp and stamp, following the line, three times, with different ink colours. Agatha at Christmasby Samantha ReadA card to make you shiver, brrrr! I began by painting some white card blue, keeping the horizon a third of a way up the card. I added some chilly flourishes by using modelling paste through a stencil. Snowflakes were added by sprinkling watered down paint. I stamped and coloured Agatha on white card, cut her out and glued her in place. Next came the fun bit of embellishing. A single glittery snowflake, a word, glitter and glossy accents were used to complete my wintry scene.

Christmas Penguin Giftsby Julie BeechThis cute little penguin was just the thing for the North Pole theme.

I cut out a base card and a panel 1cm smaller. I then cut an aperture with a circle die.

I cut patterned paper 5mm smaller than the base and adhered to the base. The penguin was stamped on white card, extending the snow line with a black fine liner. I coloured with Copics and cut out. I stamped a greeting in Versafine and added a twinkle to the scene with my snow writer. To finish, I mounted the panel on foam tape.

Christmas Chickensby Chrissie StokesThese Christmas chickens are sending their 'Glad Tidings' from within a circular aperture. They were gently coloured then given a little sparkle with Glamour Dust, before the top part was cut out and the lower section was embossed with the wall folder. The shape of the sentiment panel echoes the line of the large circle.

Snow Retroby Shirley BamptonStamp the snowman in Versafine Onyx Black, allowing for a border where the washi tape will go, then stamp the tree and sentiment. Add shading to the snowman’s body with the baby blue Tombow pen, and colour the buttons in fuchsia. Follow the outlines of the tree with the lime pen. Add a swipe of baby blue under the tree to indicate the snowline and help to ground the tree. Add washi tape across the bottom of the card and trim to fit.

Tinsel in a Tangleby Becky SmithUsing Versafine Onyx Black, stamp penguin and sentiment on Bristol paper; add clear embossing powder and heat set. Mask off penguin; blend Distress Tumbled Glass ink over background. Colour details with markers, add Glossy Accents to beak and feet and leave to dry. Using Post It tape, mask off strips on another piece of paper and blend Picked Raspberry and Twisted Citron to create stripes. Using the Stitched Rectangles die, cut stamped and striped pieces and set aside. Using Onyx Black ink, stamp a star cluster randomly over card base. Finally, mount penguin panel on a slightly smaller piece of fun foam, mount to striped panel and adhere both to cardstock.

“ A friend’s mother was turning 101 years old and I wanted to make her something special to mark the

occasion. I knew that her Mom liked to play the piano, so I drew inspiration from music and decided to incorporate sheet music patterns into my design.

To create my card, I used Distress Inks, Ranger and Dylusions sprays, Sizzix and Darice embossing folders,

Tim Holtz dies, a stencil by The Crafter’s Workshop and stamps by Heidi Swapp, The Paper Garden and Stampin’ Up. To add an extra personal touch, I used

some homemade papers.”

“ As part of the STAMPlorations design team, I was asked to showcase a new stamp set by STAMPlorations in the Dee’s Artsy Impressions line called

Balloons and Banners. I loved the balloon stamp and wanted to create a fun and bright card using it.

I decided to use two of my favourite techniques: masking and colouring. Using a mask I had made, I layered my balloons and I coloured them in

with my Spectrum Noir markers. I love how the brightly coloured balloons seem to float all bunched up together!”

A Thing of Wonder by PaperArtsy Designer – Alison BomberI stamped the angel and her wings onto a whitewashed book page and clear-embossed the image. Mud Splat and Taupe were used for her hair and in the shading of the gown. To complete the gown, I added an ethereal layer of cheesecloth, cinched in by a rusty wire belt.

She’s hovering over a crackled background, made with layers of Fresco paint colour mixed with plenty of water for a soft, blended look. I painted Mud Splat onto some card for the word, cut down ‘wonderful’ to ‘wonder’ and clear embossed it for a glossy finish.

Beautiful Blues by PaperArtsy Designer – Alison BomberTea-stained book pages were used to form the background. The angel was stamped on watercolour paper which was used to mop up inky blue Distress inks. To develop an unearthly look, I gave her blue hair and then masked her off, in order to stamp lots of bubbles behind her.

Her crown and wings were made from the same tea-stained book paper, to echo the background. Her dress was cut from tracing paper, softening the blues behind and creating a gentle, smoky finish.

MaterialsINKS: Ranger Jet Black Archival; Ranger Distress Inks – Blueprint Sketch; Faded Jeans; Vintage Photo. OTHER: PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Paints – Snowflake; Blue Oyster; Glass Blue; Sizzix Thinlits Die – Adventure Words Script; Derwent Pastel Pencils – Burnt Carmine; Indigo; Kingfisher Blue; Sharpie Paint Pen – White; tea-stained book pages; twine; seam binding; tracing paper.

Designer tip…Clear embossing the

image on the book text really makes it pop and makes it much easier to paint or colour between

the lines.

Let it Snow by Chrissie StokesFor this project I decided to use the stamps slightly differently. Using the theme from the sentiment, I made a wreath based on a large snowball. I began by sketching a circle and stamped the trio of snowballs, using them as baubles. I then took three of the small snowflake shapes and stamped them around the circle. Finally, masking the snowball stamp so as to use just the smallest of the three snowballs, I stamped this four times to fill some of the gaps. The holly was stamped and coloured and a doodled circle completed the design. The baubles were coated in Glossy Accents to finish.

I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas by Chrissie StokesThe apertures for the sentiments and the front panel were die cut to size. This was then embossed with the snowy folder. The holly was stamped and masked to add to the Santa hat, which was then coloured, cut out and trimmed with Flower Soft. The panel was popped onto dimensional dots and small holly springs were used to decorate the frames.

MaterialsINKS: Memento – Tuxedo Black Ink. OTHER: Mirage Alcohol pens – 558; 513; 429; 420; CG1; 0; MFT Inside and Out Stitched Rounded Square Die; Lil Inkers Stitched Rectangle die; Ranger – Glossy Accents; dimensional pads; Sheena Douglass Festive Embossing Folder – Snowfall; Simon Says Stamp – Stitched Rectangle dies; Anita’s PVA Tacky Glue; Polar White Flower Soft.

Designer tip…Make the most of your stamps by using them

for a different purpose … here I used the snowballs to make baubles! Stamps can be cut apart to use just part of them and then reassembled on

an acrylic block if required.

“These stamps were wonderful to colour because of the great open style of the design. With humorous quotes and useful accessory stamps, this lovely set is perfect for Christmas and other occasions too.”

Snowflake Bottle Bag by Christine DarkThe wine related quote stamps in the set made me think of creating a wine bottle gift bag. Using a scoreboard, I created a miniature bottle bag to fit one personal size bottle of wine inside. I decorated the bag using sponged paint and the bubble stamps with pigment ink. To finish off the bag, I made a snowflake label in the same mixed media style as the tag, and incorporated another one of the quotes.

Winter Angel Tag by Christine DarkThis great stamp set from PaperArtsy is Christmas themed but it's versatile because the whimsical girl can easily suit other occasions, becoming a princess by adding the crown stamp, an angel by adding the wings or simply a girl. I've coloured the stamp in pencil and masked in the wings and crown for a winter angel; she works beautifully over the ultra textured mixed media tag I've created.

Ilove paper, nothing holds as much potential as a sheet of white paper. It could be used for writing a letter, a book, notes, and of course for art. You can transform a piece of white paper into almost anything with the

help of stamps and ink. The surfaces we stamp on impact on techniques, this masterclass focuses on gloss paper. This was one of the first surfaces I used when I started stamping, and it is still one of my favourites. You can do so many fun techniques on gloss paper, and many of them are quick and simple, but give a result that looks like it was complicated to achieve.

Gloss cardstock is clay coated, giving it a glossy and smooth appearance. It is a porous paper, but with some non-porous qualities. Note that gloss cardstock is not the same as gloss photo paper, since they don’t have the same coating. Although some of the techniques might work on photo paper, I suggest that you use gloss cardstock instead.

I am particularly fond of the vibrant look of dye ink on gloss paper, particularly in combination with using a brayer to apply the ink, which makes the techniques very quick. If you don’t have a brayer, you can get the same effect with an ink-blending tool. It is easier to get a smooth application of ink with a brayer if you only go in one direction, and don’t brayer back and forth.

Since these techniques are quick, they’re great for making a batch of Christmas cards!

1 Apply an even layer of Tumbled Glass on gloss cardstock with a brayer.

2 Continue with darker shades of Distress Ink, but don’t cover the previous layer completely.

3 Splatter water on the project with a Distress Sprayer. The ink reacts to the water and lighter spots form.

Technique 1:Splattered OmbréFor a quick background, brayer dye ink on gloss cardstock in a graduated ombré pattern and splatter with water. Start with the lightest ink and gradually build up darker colours.

"Gloss cardstock is clay coated, giving it a glossy and smooth appearance. It is a porous paper, but with some non-porous qualities.”

DESIGNER TIP…

Dye inks are transparent, which

makes it extra fun to experiment with different

colour combinations. Brayer blue ink over

yellow to create green and so on.

1 Apply graduating ink, with a lighter centre and darker edges. Start with the lightest ink.

2 Emboss in an embossing folder. You can experiment with different folders to see what works best.

3 Sand with a Sanding Grip to remove the ink from the embossed parts. Wipe off the paper dust with a damp cloth.

1 Stamp background stamp and white embossing powder onto tag. Hold the stamp in your hand for a more abstract print. Heat set.

2 Use a brayer to apply Caribbean Coast Dye Ink over the entire tag.

3 Repeat with a darker ink, in this case Blue Ribbon, but don’t cover all the previous ink.

Technique 2:Sanded Dry EmbossingIf you sand inked gloss cardstock, it will remove the glossy layer of the paper, and also the ink, revealing the white paper core.

Technique 3:Textured EmbossingRanger Dye Inks, unlike other inks, donʼt resist embossing powders. If you use Distress Ink instead, youʼll get a beautiful resist eff ect.

1 Apply Tumbled Glass with a brayer as in the first technique.

2 Sand horizontally and then vertically, to create a crosshatch pattern. Ink in between with Tumbled Glass.

3 Continue sanding and applying inks with the brayer until you are happy with the result. Angle the brayer to make lines using ink from its edges.

1 Stamp trees with VersaMark ink to build a forest scene.Dry with a heat tool.

2 Tear paper to create masks and ink with an ink-blending tool. Begin with lightest shades and add darker inks.

3 Stamp trees with Distress Inks and Ranger Dye Ink to develop a layered effect.

Technique 4:Sanded LinenIf you sand glossy cardstock, you remove the glossy coating and get a beautiful matte surface, which feels very soft to the touch.

Technique 5:Layered ResistWith a watermark embossing ink, you can create a resist eff ect on glossy cardstock, without using embossing powder.

Christmas BoxDie cut a box from mountboard and die cut it a second time from gloss cardstock. Use technique 4 to prepare the gloss cardstock and add stamping with a snowflake background stamp. Cut the panels apart, ink the edges and adhere to the box.

Ink a piece of gloss cardstock as shown in technique 2 and die cut two snowflakes with the Snowflake Duo die. Emboss in the coordinating embossing folder and sand to reveal the embossed pattern.

Die cut two smaller snowflakes from a splattered ombré background. Also die cut a sentiment from the same background and another one from cork. Assemble the box according to the instructions on the packaging and tie with twine.

Main Project:Glue corrugated card to mount board and apply gesso. When dry, paint randomly over the gesso with brown shades of Distress Paint. Prepare a layered resist background on gloss paper as shown in technique 5.

The deer was die cut from glossy cardstock and technique 3 was used to create a wonderful texture. Mask the antlers before embossing pattern. Ink with Java Bean Dye Ink.

Prepare a piece of splattered ombré gloss cardstock and die cut snowflakes from it. Die cut a sentiment from gloss cardstock and ink with Java Bean. Add twine, tinsel and a sentiment sticker and the wintery wall hanging is done!

Stamping Contrasts p.64

Take a closer look at Alison Bomber’s deep crackle on her ethereal angel art work. The crackle medium applied over the watered down paint creates a naturally distressed finish.

Reindeer Days on p.23

Using a splash of London Bus paint, these birds were transformed into glorious Cardinals, perched at the top right corner of Darcy Wilkinson’s beautiful composition.

Card Art on p.28

Nestled amongst the layers of delicate die cuts, fluffy cheesecloth and glittery stars, hides an ornate Christmas wreath embellishment. We love how Georgie Connelly has offered us some fab alternative Christmas cards in Card Art!

Sky Full of Bubbles on p.10

To create her whimsical ‘bubbles’, Kim Dellow used circle stamps by Finnabair that are filled with snippets of old style type and sheet music patterns. They add another subtly vintage accent to the beautiful piece.

3D Challenge on p.42

Riikka Kovasin has used a variety of exciting embellishments on her dark reindeer art work for 3D Challenge. A mixture of black micro beads, soft ribbon and arty embellishments are coated in dazzling Micas, ready for the party season!

Amazing Artistry on p.38

To develop her beautiful textures and add subtle interest to the background of her Amazing Artistry piece, Kim Costello has used fibre paste through a stencil. The soft peaks of the paste echo the snowy theme perfectly.

Discover gorgeous details, including hidden textures, patterns and even birds!

We asked our Design Team some questions about their practice. We'll be sharing their answers over the nextfew issues.

This month’s question: If you could ask any company to create a crafting product, what would you ask for?

“An avalanche prevention/containment gadget. 'Someone' keepspiling stuff up on my desk, large on top of small, crooked and wobbly. Then one day, when I am sitting drinking tea and innocently adding pretty paper offcuts to the mini mountain... it gently sighs and starts to slide... and there is no stopping it. Tea and water pots go flying and casualties usually include all the tiny fussy cut images that have just taken three hours to cut out.” – Darcy Wilkinson

“I'm really enjoying the products out there! But what I could really use is an extra hour or two to the day! Any company manufacturing that would have me as a regular client!” – Riikka Kovasin

Do you sometimes wonder where other people create? This month, we take a peek into the creative space of Jaine Drake.

“Here in my basement craft room in Luxembourg; despite having an enormous table, I still craft on the space under the window. It’s not just because it’s the only source of natural light, it’s also because it allows me to look out onto my herb garden and see the forest on the other side of the valley. Nature offers endless inspiration.”

One of our talented readers, Susanne Rose has created this beautiful envelope project that we couldn’t wait to share with you!

“I love using my crafting supplies in every way my mind can think of. I used VersaMark ink together with metallic PanPastels to create this decorative birthday envelope. I love the shabby chic look of this technique. To fi nish, I added some sewn accents, leaving the threads long and loose.”

This issue we’ve reviewed a fun, Tokyo-inspired craft book by craft artist and blogger, Ebony Bizys.

Packed full of craft projects, upcycles and home style tips, ‘Hello Toyko’ is a really exciting DIY book that could be the perfect gift for any age.

This beautifully presented book takes you on a journey into the quirky, Tokyo-based world of Ebony Bizys and her ‘Hello Sandwich’ blog. Through the book, she documents her new Japanese lifestyle; searching for inspiration, collecting ephemera for her art work and learning more about the local culture.

We love her fun, personality-filled makes, using bright colours and accents of pattern. Her delightful collages and scrapbooks made from unusual found ephemera, act as windows into her explorative crafting journey.

Her gorgeous mini-notes and zines take scrapbooking and journalling to a more openly engaging level, creating art that encourages and inspires interaction with others.

She also suggests some great craft storage ideas, such as using pegboard, vintage tins and found boxes and offers some quick stationery projects. Any upcycler is sure to adore this sensational book.
