Cradlehuts Mountain and Guided Walks
The cradle huts overland track is no doubt a heaven for trekkers. But
you got to know what you are in for.
How about a 65 kilometer trek through intense wilderness? That’s only
possible in a place like Tasmania. The Overland Track is the most
famous bush trek in the whole world and has every reason to be so.
The beauties you witness here are to be found nowhere else. The entire
track is a part of the World Heritage Area. It generally takes 5-8 days,
depending on your trekking speed, to cover the entire stretch. If you
are travelling to Australia, this must be a part of your travel itinerary.
The Overland Track Guide:
Transportation
If you are driving all the way there, park your vehicle at Lake St Clair
and then take a bus ride to the Cradle Mountain. Here from cradle huts,
it’s only you and your feet. Getting to Overland Track and then coming
back to Lake St Clair requires some planning. Shuttles are sporadic and
at times high expensive. Tassielink is the most trusted name there as it
runs trips from Hobart to Cradle Mountain via Queenstown, Lake St
Clair to Hobart, and Launceston to Cradle Mountain. The fares and
timings are subject to change.
Practical Information
You must purchase a permit before you set foot on the Overland Track.
The high season for trekking there is November to April. The permit
enables you to walk at your own pace without being questioned by
security guards. You must purchase the permit well before via the
internet. Or you can get your permit at the visitor’s centre in Lake St
Clair, Mt Field, Cradle Mountain, or Freycinet National Park. Permits
cost you a $100-$150. You have to collect the permit before 3PM at the
Cradle Mountain (in April, it’s2PM). Have your own tent, sleeping bag,
and cooking stove if you are an individual trekker.
Make your trek enjoyable. Don’t take unnecessary risks.
