In the recent past Poland has witnessed a period of transformations and dynamic growth. If you are coming back after ten, five or even two years, you are in for a pleasant surprise.

Right in the heart of Europe you will find Poland – a country synonymous with beau-tiful nature, highly energetic cities and hospitable residents. An exceptional place onthe tourist map of the continent and the world, it offers an unequalled experience.

In the recent past Poland has witnessed a period of transformations and dynamicgrowth. If you are coming back after ten, five or even two years, you are in for a ple-asant surprise. Although the country continues to offer the same historical and culturalmonuments, it now radiates an entirely new, positive energy, a spirit of profound chan-ges. In addition, it has gained an advanced infrastructure together with sports, leisureand business centres. The fact that Poland hosted the 2012 EURO European FootballChampionship considerably contributed to its intensive modernisation. Thanks to thismajor event Poland gained far more than splendid sports venues. First, it was given achance to show itself to football fans as an open country of opportunities. The success ofthe championship inspired further efforts. The continuous growth of Poland also inclu-des the tourist offer: expanding and developing tourist products, modernising historicalmonuments and introducing new helpful solutions aimed at travellers. The Poles intendto make their country as accessible and friendly as possible.

All transformations occurring in the country by the Vistula take place in harmonywith tradition. The cultural and historical heritage occupies a highly important place inthe national consciousness, which is why new qualities are created in accord with thepast. And the country has no shortage of places of particular value for Poland, Europeand the world. The largest Teutonic Order castle in Malbork, the unique salt mine inWieliczka and the Old Town in Wrocław are among those especially noteworthy. Butthere is more! The offer of Poland represents such a wide range that everyone will findsomething intriguing, regardless of theirlikings and preferences. Alongside monu-ments, whose renown is confirmed by ti-me, there are new exciting highlights onthe rise, such as the Multimedia FountainPark in Wrocław, the advanced experi-mental Copernicus Science Centre inWarsaw, any many others. Moreover, Po-land is hosting numerous events of inter-national rank, including festivals, sportstournaments, concerts and congresses. All goes to show that Poland is a thoro-ughly contemporary country. Plus, every-thing is easily available within your reach– all you need to do to get yourself carriedaway by the prevailing atmosphere iscross the border.

Poland – letyourself besurprised!

2013 WILL MARK three impor-tant anniversaries connected withMikołaj Kopernik (Nicolaus Coper-nicus), one of the best known andmost brilliant astronomers, the manwho inspired the so-called Coperni-

can Revolution and ”moved theEarth and stopped the Sun”. We willbe celebrating the 540th anniversaryof Copernicus’ birthday, the 470thanniversary of his death and the470th anniversary of the first edition

of his epochal work De revolutioni-bus orbium coelestium. The triple an-niversary will be a first-rate opportu-nity to visit Toruń, the hometown ofthe seminal astronomer, where anumber of Copernicus-related cultu-ral, scientific and religious events oflocal, regional, national and interna-tional scope are planned for the Fe-bruary to May period. Concerts, exhibitions, lectures and shows areonly some of the attractions. The To-ruń-based Nicolaus Copernicus Uni-versity, the Museum named afterhim and the local planetarium allprepared a special programme aspart of the Copernican HeritageDays. The planetarium actually be-came one of the most popular touristhighlights of the town and its region. It is also one of the most visited pla-netariums in Europe. For the Co-pernicus anniversaries the planeta-rium developed its own projects,one-of-a-kind shows based on uni-que scenarios and visual materials.www.torun.pl

City Life

Located in south Poland, Cracow will fascina-te you with its unequalled ambience – someti-mes lazy, packed with events at other times, but always unique and inspiring. The city is anexceptional treasury of works of art, historicalmementos and constructions representing near-ly all architectural styles from the Middle Agesup to the present day. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that each year Cracow becomes thedestination for millions of travellers from thewhole wide world, offering a myriad attractions.

The Main Market Square continues to be thecity’s centre just like it has for hundreds ofyears. The largest municipal square of media-eval Europe boasts a shape unchanged since1257 and inclusion on the UNESCO WorldHeritage List. For 600 years, on every hour, thecharacteristic bugle call is played on a trumpettowards four directions of the world from thetower of St. Mary’s Basilica, adjacent to theMarket Square. Located in the Square’s centre, the Cloth Hall – a mediaeval marketplace – isamong the best recognized Polish monuments.

The available merchandise mainly includes lo-cal handicraft, jewellery and souvenirs. Amidstthe stands you will also find the traditional Cra-cow obwarzanki, a bread roll with a hole andsprinkled with poppy seed, salt or sesame, aswell as figurines of the mythical dragon of Wa-wel Hill. According to legends, the creatureused to dwell in a grotto on Wawel Hill, atopwhich the town was founded. At present, thedragon remains a symbol of Cracow and oneof the main motifs of popular souvenirs. A fire--breathing sculpture is set at the feet of the Wa-wel Hill, particularly frequented by the youn-gest fans of the legend. From here, a straightpath leads to the hill itself, with the Castle andthe neighbouring Cathedral towering above itssummit. A former seat of Polish monarchs, theCastle is now open to the public as a museum. The arcaded courtyard of the royal residence –a pearl of Renaissance architecture – never failsto enthral visitors.

The list of architectural treasures of Cracowis virtually never-ending. The Nowa Huta di-

City Life

strict continues to surprise with its monu-mental character and extraordinary symme-try. It remains the most interesting and com-plete implementation of the intentions of so-cialist realist architects. A slightly tongue-in--cheek tour of Nowa Huta allows you to notonly learn about the period architecture, butalso Polish reality of the times: to see howPoles used to live, reside, work and finallyenjoy themselves. This is exactly the type ofexperience only Nowa Huta can offer; afterall, vintage cars dating several decades backstill roam the local streets.

The invariably intriguing Kazimierz –where Christian and Jewish cultures haveco-existed for many centuries – delivers anentirely different type of thrills. Althoughglobally recognized Judaistic monumentsabound, this is predominantly a place thatteems with life – the seat of fairs of vintagecollectibles and works of art, with atmosphe-ric joints, restaurants and pubs playing hometo live music. An excellent option for treasu-re hunters and enthusiasts of exploring re-gional flavours.

The townscape of Cracow lacks glass sky-scrapers but that does not mean that youcannot look at it all from above. On the con-

trary - the Kościuszko Mound, raised in 1820-1833 to comme-morate the Polish national heroTadeusz Kościuszko, is the fa-vourite viewing spot. At the he-ight of 34,1 the Mound includessoil from the battlefields of theKościuszko Uprising and theAmerican War of Independen-ce. In the middle of the ninete-enth century Austrians surroun-ded the Mound with fortifica-tions, adapted for a hotel in1977. The terrace on the Mo-und’s top offers a gorgeous pa-norama of Cracow.

A viewing platform, which thelocal residents call a ”balloon”,calls for nerves of steel… or atleast a good head for heights. An actual balloon gives touristsa ride to about 150 m, enough to see not on-ly the whole town but also Tatra peaks. Keepin mind, however, that accessibility of the fli-ghts depends on weather condition.

European Capital of Culture in 2000, Cra-cow also has a boisterous cultural life. Eachyear it hosts close to 100 festivals and other

cultural events of internationalrenown. Moreover, it is a cityof modern museums, givingtheir visitors a chance to enjoyclose encounters with historyand art. The National Museumin Cracow features one of themost valuable and largest col-lections of Polish art, includingan exceptional gallery of mo-dern national painting. Along-side all the major and celebra-ted institutions you will alsocome upon some rather bizarreand niche ones – the InsuranceMuseum among them – strictlyaimed at enthusiasts of a givenfield. Finally, light entertain-ment fans staying in Cracowhave no need to worry. Morethan 300 bars, pubs and cafes

set in the city centre are the reason why somany people from all over Europe travel toCracow to have a good time in one of the lo-cal establishments. The immense variety ofhighlights and extraordinary sites are preci-sely what makes Cracow so popular amongforeign tourists.

Each year Cracowbecomes thedestination for millionsof travellers from thewhole wide world.

“Your home in Cracow”

Historical capital opens up its vaults

Cracow is so ancient that no one can fully graspits stunning past. Krak’s Mound dates back to thetimes of the Celts and the legendary Avars. Slavdukes and monarchs residing here decided aboutthe shape of a town soon to become the capital ofone of the mightiest countries of mediaevalEurope. Those and other stories continue to beconcealed by the Cracow vaults. Right beneath thecity’s ancient market square, a brand-new andliterally unequalled underground museum featuresa permanent exhibition exploring the Europeanidentity of Cracow. The multimedia showtransforms standard sightseeing into a remarkabletravel in time. Guests not only see but also touchthe origins of the legendary town. Anarchaeological park 4 m below the market squareboasts Europe’s only cross-section of an immense, bustling mediaeval urban centre. Underground,

the visitors encircle the Cloth Hall using glassramps and footbridges suspended above mediaevaltracks, the oldest ones dating back to the eleventhcentury. The exposition has no shortage of state-of-the-art gadgets, with many touchscreens, digital3D models, holograms and multimedia standsarranged along the sightseeing tour. All serve toboost the imagination and render Cracow legendsalmost tangible. A journey deep underground andfar in time will certainly provide touring suchmonuments, as St. Mary’s Basilica, the Cloth Halland Wawel Hill Castle with a completely newdimension. Wawel Cathedral is next on the listoffering underground tourist highlights. A tour ofcrypts with the tombsof Polish monarchs starts in the oldestRomanesque crypt of St. Leonard, featuring thetombstones of kings and most eminent

commanders, who won fame on many battlefields,i.a. Jan III Sobieski and Tadeusz Kościuszko. Averitable lesson in the history of Poland and thearcana of Romanesque architecture, the cryptoutlines the construction of mediaeval buildings. This raw and moving atmosphere stands incontrast with the opulent cathedral, in which acloser look is due to the Zygmunt chapel, anoutstanding example of Renaissance architecturenorth of the Alps. When sightseeing Wawel Hillbe also sure to pay attention to the Royal Castleand its impressive galleries, adjacent to thecathedral. The Castle’s chambers feature theresidential quarters of the Polish monarchs fromthe fifteenth century on. There is more tosubterranean Cracow than pensiveness and atestimony to historical transformations. After all,the cellars of Old Town houses used to be the

busiest centre of Cracow’s social life. This iswhere rollicking parties and meetings used totake place and local breweries and inns wereset side by side. In the post-war period theunderground section of the market squarehosted well-known cabarets brightening upthe gloomy reality. Well, we are glad to saythat today these traditions are beingcontinued. Cellars in town housessurrounding the market square continue to beused for top bars and eateries, such asRestroBar Ratuszowa below the town hall’stower, in the exact centre of the market

square. In these atmospheric surroundingsregional delicacies take on an unmatchedflavour and beers, brewed according totraditional recipes, gain in intensity. At thesame time, the mood of Cracow of a bygoneera resounds among the thick cellar walls.

Galleries, theatres and cinemasall teem with life around here and in the processbecome important meeting places, such as theWrocław Opera, one of the most recognisedPolish opera companies worldwide. Its repertoireincludes classics and present-day works producedby acclaimed artists. The opera house in Wrocławis also Poland’s only institution of this kind tostage blockbuster productions, spectacles createdin unconventional vast spaces for an audience ofthousands, with executive teams of severalhundreds working on monumental decorationsand special effects. The shows are usually held inthe historical interiors of the Wrocław CentennialHall, held in high esteem for its magnificentarchitecture. The Hall was designed by architectMax Berg, an eminent German Expressionist. In2006 the Hall and the architectural complexsurrounding it, encompassing i.a. the FourDomes Pavilion, the Pergola and the Spire, joined the UNESCO World Heritage list.Nowadays the Hall and its grounds are visited bycrowds of local resident and tourists, not only dueto the construction itself, but also attracted by thenear-by Multimedia Fountain. With an area of a 1ha, this is Poland’s largest fountain and one of thelargest in Europe. Special multimedia showsstaged in the summer season guarantee anunforgettable experience.

Naturally, Wrocław has more culturalhighlights to offer. The more unique ones includeRacławice Panorama, Poland’s largest paintingdisplayed in a circular building constructedespecially for this purpose. Be sure to see the OldTown Market Square and the Gothic town halltowering above it. The latter’s interiors host thecelebrated Piwnica Świdnicka – Europe’s oldestrestaurant. This list is but a small sampling of theattractions available in Wrocław, an electrifyingand inspiring city abounding in one-of-a-kindvenues, places and historical monuments.

boasting gorgeous sandy beaches and imposinghotels. The enchanting scenery of the city based onthe merits of its natural landscape, attractive leisureand relaxation centres and many culture andentertainment events, combined with the fact thatit is so easy to reach, make Sopot an increasinglyacknowledged business tourism centre.

Where prestigious events take place The meetings industry is remarkably important

both for the town and its region as a whole. Alreadynow Sopot hosts more than 20% of all congresses, conferences, trade fairs and corporate and incentiveevents held in Pomerania. The city is particularlysuccessful among companies representingadvanced business services. The ABSL conference, the most important event in the calendar of theCentral and Eastern European sector, was stagedthree times at the Sheraton Sopot Hotel and isprobably the best example of this trend. also hosts numerous symposia and business andscientific conferences of international scope.Although most Sopot-based meetings (53%) areheld in May, June, September, October andNovember, the city stays open to visitors all yearlong. Considering its picturesque location and thepresence of upscale tourist centres, the number ofevents attracted to Sopot should not come as asurprise. The prestigious New York Times rankedthe Baltic resort 17th on its list of the world’s placesto go in 2011, ex aequo with the neighbouring cityof Gdańsk. The newspaper placed emphasis onSopot’s magnificent white beaches, fin-de-sieclevillas and the lively Bohaterów Monte Casinoboulevard lined with cafes and packed clubs. NewYork Times also praised the Leśna Opera, which in2012 was reopened after thorough renovation.

Europe’s longest woodenpier, it is also one of the most popular Polishvenues for relaxation and partying and anessential landmark of the resort. The near-byBohaterów Monte Casino Street is Sopot’s toppromenade commonly known as ”Monciak”and the place to go when looking for clubs andrestaurants, recommended both for formaldinners and after-hours get-togethers. TheSopot Aquapark can act as a noteworthyalternative. One of Poland’s largest and mostadvanced water parks, it has enough cascades,Scottish showers, massages, grottos, waterumbrellas and slides to guarantee first-ratefun. And if you want to boost your adrenalinelevel try to make your way up a 70 m longstretch of a wild river. Or perhaps simply relaxin a jacuzzi, a complex of modern saunas or abiological regeneration salon. The mostadvanced bowling alley in the whole Tri-Cityrounds out the offer.

Gdańska .. Traditionally the best

Gdańska restaurant is the only venue of its kind to be so closely connected with the millennium of Gdańsk.

Our restaurant is dedicated exclusively to the city, as reflected in its interior decoration, arrangement and culinary offer.

The décor presenting seventeenth-century Gdańsk is an unquestionable highlight. Richly decorated walls,

models of ships and miniatures depict life led in the city of Neptune three hundred years ago.

Splendid Gdańsk atmospherePolish and Old Polish cuisine is our speciality

We organize banquets and anniversary parties
