8 SECRETS OF CAREER SUCCESS
1. INVEST IN YOURSELF.
• Think of yourself like an investment account.
• Experiences
• Learning
• Relationships
• Invest early so it grows and pays over career.
• Discretionary time is yours to invest.
• Take advantage of every opportunity for learning you are offered.
2. BECOME SELF AWARE
Self-Awareness
• Objective understanding of one’s own talents, strengths, weaknesses, and passions and the role these play in our decision making and behavior
Components of Self-Awareness• Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
• Talents, Strengths
• Behavioral and Personality Styles
• Values, Beliefs
• Passions, Interests
• Blind spots, Weaknesses
Caution!• We are the least accurate assessors of ourselves.
Recommendation: Utilize assessments (Myers
Briggs, Keirsey, StrengthsFinder).
Survey people you trust and ask them to identify for you your strengths and opportunities.
Reflect on who you are and who you wish to be.
3. HAVE A PLAN.
DO I KNOW WHERE I’M GOING?
Intentionality• The quality of making choices and taking action towards the
achievement of important goals.
Two Parts:
• What do you want to accomplish?
• How will you make it happen?

4. HAVE SOME GUTS.
• Spend time thinking about the important issues and have an opinion on things that you can defend.
• Talk to your boss about your career goals.
• Share your goals with others.
• Ask for and take on big, important projects.

Low performers don’t get promoted.
Regardless if you love your current job or not, focus on delivering great results.
KNOW WHAT MATTERS

• How is my performance measured?• What does my boss consider to be high performance?• What things are really important to my boss?• What do I need to do to meet and exceed these
expectations?
PRACTICE AND PREPARATION
6. LOOK AND ACT THE PART.
• Perception is reality when it comes to advancing.
• Dress for the job you want, not the job you have. (When in doubt, overdress.)
• Everything you do is important and is being judged.
• Treat every interaction as an interview for your next job (conversations, meetings, emails, etc).

• Get involved in groups and organizations.
• Help others as much as you can.
• Keep in touch with people.

It is not what you know that matters, it is who you know that makes all the difference.

• Get involved in the community in something you are passionate about.
• Seek a leadership role in the organization.
