IntroductionLearning to fly is one of life’s mostexhilarating experiences. The freedom offlight is almost without bounds.

Flying training is a

specialised field thatrequires professionalism, quality and an emphasison safety. You need to

feel comfortable at yourcollege, and with yourinstructor. You need a

college that has a solid

reputation for quality.

Basair is a progressive, imaginative and modern

college that provides allof the above. We have a

wide range of quality training courses, a

diverse fleet of aircraft maintained to thehighest standards, the best in facilities and

most importantly - a professional team ofinstructors.

History

Basair commenced operating in 1991 atBankstown Airport in Sydney.

The business was started by Darrin Ward, a

senior flying instructor, who still owns thecompany, and works in the business today.Darrin holds an Airline Transport PilotLicence, a multi engine Command InstrumentRating, a Grade One Flight Instructor Rating, multi engine training approval, and isapproved by the Civil Aviation Safety

Authority to conduct flight tests right through

to the Commercial Pilot Licence and MultiEngine Command Instrument Rating level.

Basair has seen many flying training

organisations come and go and has outlasted

them all. The strength and security of training

with a proven organisation, and one that haspast students now flying with airlines allaround the world, is an important part ofembarking on an aviation career.

The motivation behind the formation of Basairwas to provide a centreof aviation learning thatproves itself by results. The philosophy

underpinning theorganisation was that ofa focus on clients – and

helping clients achievewhat their goals are.The results that havebeen achieved sinceBasair started haveshown that the

philosophy has worked. Basair has many

past clients now enjoying rewarding careersin airlines, working as charter pilots, and

teaching other people the wonders of flying.

Training

In order to provide the best possible training,we constantly refine and improve ourcourses.

Basair has trained pilots who are now flying in

major airlines as well as those who want a

new, exciting hobby. We offer accredited

courses for Certificates in Aviation for Privateand Commercial Pilot licence level, plusCertificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma and

Professional Pilot Series courses for careerpilots. These courses are accredited by theVocational Education and Training

Accreditation Board (VETAB) of NSW. Thisaccreditation is recognition of the quality ofour courses, and is your guarantee of a high

standard. Additionally, Basair is a member ofthe Australian Council for Private Education

and Training.

Basair has obtained course accreditation in itsown right - rather than the more common

process of licensing a course from anotherorganisation. This means that we teach ourown courses the way they were designed to

be taught – and we have complete controlover the delivery of those courses.

Additionally, Basair is a “Registered Training

Organisation” which allows us to deliveraccredited courses, and is your indicator of

minimum levels of quality, facilities and

standards of course delivery.

The licence you gain when studying with

Basair will give you a highly respected

qualification that is a recognised internationalqualification.

We have a modern flight simulator. Use ofthis equipment is incorporated into all of ourtraining. We also have an extensive video

library as well as a complete computer aided

briefing system.

Facilities

Basair Aviation College has two campuses –one located at Bankstown Airport south westof Sydney, and another located at CessnockAirport – north of Sydney.

Each campus comprises a modern air-

conditioned building complex containing

classrooms, simulator facilities, pilot lounge, and administration.

Rather than being located in the side of a

hangar Basair has dedicated facilities thathave been custom designed and built as a

place of learning. Set back from the aircraftparking area provides the benefits of a quietlocation for study, while still being close to

the aircraft fleet.

Basair is not just a flying college. We have a

lounge area for your use, a bar-be-que area

with picnic tables, plus a fully equipped flightplanning room with fax and telephonefacilities. The college is open seven days a

week, from 8:00am to 6:00pm, and you arewelcome to call in at any time for assistanceor advice - there is always someone to

answer any questions you have.

Instructors

We can only provide quality courses with

quality teachers. Our instructors are alltrained professionals, and are continually

being evaluated and retrained to maintain thehighest standards.

Flying training is a personal experiencebetween you and your instructor. Yourinstructor will get to know you, how you fly, what your strengths and weaknesses are.

Additionally, the Chief Flying Instructoroversees all training, and will happily discussyour training with you at any time.

The team of instructors at Basair comprises a

group of senior Grade One Instructors who

have many years of flight instruction behind

them. The majority of our instructors havealso been trained by Basair - so thestandardisation of our training techniques isunequalled.

Aircraft

Basair's fleet of aircraft is diverse, with someaircraft types not available elsewhere in

Sydney. With a selection of different typesavailable for you to fly, the Basair fleet is oneof the most comprehensive in the region.

From our basic trainers, to our advanced

multi engine turbocharged aircraft, Basair'sCPL trainees experience a wide range ofdifferent aircraft types during their training.

Location

Basair is located at Bankstown Airport, 25 km

south-west of Sydney. Just a thirty minutedrive from the city centre brings you to thebusiest airport in the southern hemisphere, and the fifth busiest airport in the world. Weare fortunate at Bankstown that even with

such activity, we have few delays due to a

complex of four runways. Bankstown also

has a control tower - ensuring our clients aretrained in a professional airspaceenvironment from their very first lesson. Ithas long been said that "if you can fly atBankstown - you can fly anywhere!". Thosewho learn to fly at Bankstown have the skills

Page 4: Cpl Information

Basair Aviation College – Commercial Pilot Licence Courses 7310.25.0107 4

and experience to be able to fly into thebusiest of airports with ease and confidence.

Naturally, exposure to the procedures ofBankstown is a valuable part of the training ofa Commercial Pilot. You can feel confidentknowing you can handle high levels of airtraffic anywhere in the world.

Two great options for training

As well as being located at Bankstown Airportin Sydney, Basair has another base atCessnock Airport in the Hunter Valley, justwest of Newcastle.

There are many benefits that stem from thesynergy between operations at these two

locations.

Clients have the choice to fly at eitherlocation - without undergoing check flightsthat are normally required.

You are also able to inject some real variety

into your training by occasionally having

lessons at our Cessnock base. This isaccomplished completely transparently – and

provides you with extra insights into yourtraining.

Advanced standing for higher studies.

Basair courses provide you with advanced

standing in higher studies courses. On

completion of a Basair course you can enrolto continue your studies to a Degree levelutilising “Distance Education”. This enablesyou to work in the industry and build yourflying experience while continuing with

advanced studies.

With sufficient industry experience you will beable to enrol in a Master of Aviation course. This qualification is significantly higher than

that of a Degree, and Basair courses provide a

path to this qualification if you so desire.

University studies

Basair also offers an innovative course in

conjunction with the University of Newcastle. On this course you can study for your aviation

qualifications, while at the same time studying

for a Business Degree with the University.

This is an ideal program if you are looking atgiving yourself the best opportunity in theaviation industry, while at the same timekeeping a wide range of employment optionsopen with additional qualifications.

Details of this course are on page 23 in thisinformation.

Into the future...

We have always been at the forefront oftechnology at Basair. Computer aided

training, the latest digital flight simulators, extensive audio-visual training aids are justsome examples.

The information superhighway is the road to

the future, and Basair was the first Australian

flying college on the Internet, and one of thefirst flying colleges in the world to launch into

CyberSpace. We have electronic mailfacilities to provide rapid communicationswith our clients locally, and internationally. The e-mail system is also used to providesupport for theory tuition. Additionally, wehave a full information service on the World

Wide Web. Our web site provides a wealth ofinformation about aviation careers, links to

airlines, and you can even listen to the controltower on the Internet! Study resources forour clients are also available on our web site.

You can find us at http://www.basair.com.au

We are pleased to welcome you to Basair, and we look forward to helping you achieveyour goals as a career pilot.

Key points ! Basair holds accreditation from the

Vocational Education and Training

Accreditation Board (VETAB) for itscourses. This means thatGovernment accreditation has been

obtained, and ensures high

standards of course delivery.Accreditation also means thatcandidates studying these coursesare eligible for AUSTUDY and othersimilar financial assistance.

! Basair’s courses are designed in-

house by aviation professionals with

many years of experience training

Commercial Pilots. The courses arealso designed to the latestCompetency Based Training

standards.

! We conduct training to FlightInstructor rating level, and we hold

approval to conduct theory

examinations up to Grade OneInstructor Rating level. This gives an

indication of the quality of training

provided, and the confidence that theCivil Aviation Safety Authority has in

the quality of previous candidatesfrom the college.

! Our courses incorporate oursophisticated multiengine flightsimulators for Command InstrumentRating training. We also have an in-

house Authorised Test Officer who

can conduct tests in the simulators.

! A wide range of high performanceaircraft are available for trainees to

fly, such as the constant-speed

equipped Tobago single engineaircraft compared to the fixed-pitch

Piper Cherokee or Cessna 172, and

the more complex Twin Comanchecompared to a Duchess, Partenavia

or Seminole multi engine aircraft. Itis vital to be trained to fly higherperformance aircraft like those

operated by commercial operators in

the industry.

! Rather than many of the flying hoursbeing in “low end” aircraft like theCessna 152, our courses ensure thatyou are conversant with theoperations of all the aircraft typeslikely to be used in your first aviation

job. To achieve this we ensure thatyou gain exposure to a wide range ofaircraft types during your training, with sufficient hours on each type to

consolidate your learning.

! Theory courses are conducted

according to a structured syllabus. You do not need to self-study thematerial. You are trained for yourtheory exams – not left to try and

train yourself using “self teaching”methods.

! The Diploma and Advanced Diploma

courses start on fixed dates and run

to a structured program, rather than

commencing at random times. Thisallows us to fully integrate your flying

and theory training.

! All flight tests are conducted as you

progress through to yourCommercial Pilot Licence, and notjust a final Commercial Pilot flighttest. You will pass the General Flying

Progress Test and then obtain a

Private Pilot Licence on the way to

obtaining your Commercial PilotLicence. This means that you areable to carry passengers with you

when you are building yourexperience. (If only the CPL test wasconducted you would never carry

passengers with you - until your very

first flight employed as a CommercialPilot!)

CommercialPilotCareersA career as a Commercial Pilot is one that isdreamed of by many people. An exciting

career, it offers many rewards such as travel, job security and attractive salaries.

Decisions that affect the long-term careerprospects of a candidate need to be madebefore any training is commenced, and thesedecisions need to be made carefully. This document will provide you with

information about career pathways and

training required to follow those pathways. Itis our hope that decisions regarding a careerin aviation will be made easier after reading

this document.

The path to a Commercial PilotLicence

The training for a Commercial Pilot Licence(CPL) follows a similar path, regardless ofwhether the training is conducted full time orpart time.

An important consideration when embarking

on an aviation career is the quality and natureof the training course undertaken. It isimportant to undertake a course of training

that provides the best range of career skills, while not taking excessive time to achievethese skills. A course should be completed

within a twelve month period, and then

employment obtained to build flying

experience.

Further studies can be undertaken once theinitial course is completed. These studies arenormally done via “Distance Education” to

allow you to continue working in the aviation

industry and building experience.

The first stage of a Commercial Pilot Licenceis to obtain a Private Pilot Licence. Thislicence allows a pilot to carry passengers, butnot for hire or reward - they cannot be paid

for their flying. All Basair Commercial PilotLicence candidates are required to pass thePPL. This then allows them to carry

passengers while on navigation flights.

Valuable exposure is then gained to theresponsibilities of the carriage of passengers.

The Private Licence will generally be achieved

with around 50-60 hours of flight time and

also involves three written examinations. A

flight test is conducted prior to the issue ofthe licence.

After gaining a Private Pilot Licence, thetrainee needs to build experience whiledeveloping skills to the level required for theissue of a Commercial Pilot Licence. At thisstage of the training course Basair traineesundertake a series of cross country flight to

destinations like the Great Barrier Reef, AyersRock and many other outback locations.Extensive experience is gained in remote area

navigation, and operation from outback

airstrips. Training to raise standards to thelevels required for a Commercial Pilot Licenceis also conducted during this time.

The Commercial licence is issued after thecandidate has achieved a minimum of 150hours flying experience, plus passed a written

examination and a flight test. Basaircandidates will be required to pass an

additional seven exams prior to obtaining

their Commercial Licence. This ensures that

Page 7: Cpl Information

Basair Aviation College – Commercial Pilot Licence Courses 7310.25.0107 7

our candidates are at a higher level ofknowledge than the typical CPL candidate.

At this point the candidate is qualified to bepaid for their flying. There are, however two

main limitations placed on a "standard"Commercial Pilot - they can only fly during

daylight hours, and they must also fly in

reasonably fair weather. These limitations aresignificant for a CPL holder, so additionaltraining must be undertaken to remove theserestrictions.

Generally, a CPL trainee will undertaketraining for a "Command Instrument Rating"which allows them to fly at night and in bad

weather. If desired, the night flying

component can be covered on its own as a

Night VFR rating.

The CPL holder can also undertake training atthis stage to become a Flying Instructor -

probably the best way to obtain that first job

in the aviation industry. Training to be an

Instructor also increases flying skills, as an

Instructor must be able to show high levels ofproficiency in all flying manoeuvres.

After completion of this additional training thenew Commercial Pilot is in a much moreemployable situation, and is able to pursuejobs in air charter and air freight operations.

Generally, employment will not be possible in

the airlines at this stage as the new CPLholder does not have sufficient flying

experience to meet the minimum entry

requirements for the airlines. This is an

important point and one that is often

overlooked when deciding on training

options. The CPL holder will have to obtain

employment flying aircraft in General Aviation

to build up experience prior to applying to theairlines. This employment can be in the aircharter or air freight areas, or maybe as a

Flying Instructor.

Basair’s training courses are designed to

allow you to expedite your path into

employment in the aviation industry, and

therefore strengthen your career prospectswith an airline.

Gaining employment initially as a Flying

Instructor is the simplest way of increasing

flying experience, and it also allows the pilotto work from major population centres.Flying training experience is also regarded

highly by the airlines as this background givesa good grounding for future check and

training captains in the airlines.

Medical requirements

The issue of a Commercial Pilot Licence isdependent on the candidate passing a ClassOne Aviation Medical. This medical includesa general physical examination, plus eyesightand hearing tests.

Because an entire career depends on passing

this medical, we always recommend that a

full Class One medical is completed prior to

commencing training.

A list of medical examiners is included with

this information.

What do the airlines require?

The following is provided as a guide. Pleasenote that these requirements are typical of themajor international and domestic airlines(QANTAS and Virgin Blue) however regionaland commuter airlines may have quitedifferent requirements:

! Minimum age 21 years.! Higher School Certificate (or

equivalent) completed.! Commercial Pilot Licence.! Multi Engine endorsement.! Multi Engine Command Instrument

Rating.! 1000 hours flying experience,

including at least 500 hours "in

command".

Important considerations

The way you undertake training for a

Commercial Pilot Licence has a significantbearing on what your career prospects will bein the long term. Unfortunately, many peoplemake the wrong decisions at the beginning oftheir training and the result is a lostopportunity for an aviation career.

There are some fundamental considerationsthat need to be of primary concern when

making your decision:

Age - If aiming at a career with the majorairlines: The major airlines will generally belooking at taking on flight crew at the earliestpossible age, between 21 and 30 years old.The reason for this is that there are significantcosts incurred by the airlines in training you,so they need the longest return of service thatyou can give them prior to retiring. Thisallows them to recover the training costs they

have invested in you.

For this reason you should avoid any delaysin getting to a position where you can be

Page 8: Cpl Information

Basair Aviation College – Commercial Pilot Licence Courses 7310.25.0107 8

applying for a flight crew position. You

should complete a course of training that runsfor no more than twelve months, and then

commence working in the industry. If you

would like to obtain a Degree (or similar)qualification then do this once you areworking in the industry and increasing youraeronautical experience.

Age - If looking at other career options(regional and commuter airlines, flyinginstructor, charter pilot etc.): Age is no

barrier to someone wanting to fly for a living. The main restrictions on a Commercial Pilotarise at 60 years of age, so

early retirement is not a

requirement for being a

pilot!

Experience: The mostimportant factorconsidered when you

apply for a job is yourflying experience. It is theone qualification that allaviation jobs are centred

around, and it is thereforethe most important qualification you need to

obtain.

Most airlines will require a minimum of 500 or1000 hours before you can apply for a pilotposition with them.

It is crucial that you obtain your CommercialPilot Licence and other qualifications withoutmuch delay, and then start working in theindustry to build up your experience.

Qualifications: The main qualification foremployment as a pilot is the Commercial PilotLicence. It is of benefit to obtain a furtherqualification such as a Diploma. A Diploma

qualification is obtained after a one yearcourse of study, which is the minimum time itwill normally take to obtain a CommercialPilot Licence.

A Degree, however will require at least threeyears of ground study, and produce the samepractical qualifications as a Diploma course. The delay in obtaining a Degree qualification

(an additional 2-21/2 years) could make you

ineligible for entry to the major airlines. A

candidate completing a twelve month

Diploma course of study will have around

1500 hours flying experience by the time a

candidate undertaking the Degree coursefinishes with around 200 hours experience. This places the Diploma candidate ahead of

the Degree candidate with significantly

increased experience levels.

If you would like to obtain a Degreequalification then you can complete studiesfor this after completing a Diploma - generally

part time by “Distance Education”. This is by

far the preferred option as you receive thebenefits of working in the industry and

building up experience as quickly as possible, while still obtaining a Degree qualification.

Basair's Diploma and Advanced Diploma

courses provide full credits towards a Degreecourse, and will therefore significantly shorten

the time and cost of finishing a

Degree once one of ourcourses have been completed.

Additionally, it is worth

considering completing a

higher qualification in othersubject areas such as BusinessManagement or Marketing, asthese courses provideexcellent background

knowledge for pilots. Themajor airlines are now looking

closely at qualifications and experienceoutside the aviation field as a benefit for theirflight crew to have.

Summary

From the above, it can be seen that thepreferred path to follow for a careerProfessional Pilot is one that has the following

characteristics:

! Diploma qualification if possible, orprofessional course of study.

! Study period of no more than 12months to be qualified and

employable.! Involves a wide range of experiences

for the trainee, including multi enginesimulator training, and high

performance aircraft training.! Provides a clear path into

employment in General Aviation to

build up flying experience.

Types of study.

There are two main ways of studying for a

Commercial Pilot Licence:

! Full time study - Professional PilotCourses and Certificate or Diploma

Airline Pilot Course, and

! Part time study - Professional PilotCourses.

Page 9: Cpl Information

Basair Aviation College – Commercial Pilot Licence Courses 7310.25.0107 9

The avenue followed depends entirely on

your situation, but the following should beconsidered:

Full time study provides the fastest path to a

Commercial Pilot Licence, however it also

(naturally) requires a greater time and

financial commitment. Full time study willalso be less susceptible to delays due to

weather etc. as the course can be rearranged

to suit the conditions.

Part time study (e.g. flying on weekends)allows more flexibility in study in terms oftime and financial commitment. It does, however, take longer to qualify when

studying part time, plus you are more proneto delays with weather since there are limited

days on which to train.

Basair has designed professional pilotcourses that provide our clients with the bestpossible start in the competitive aviation

industry. As well as our accredited Certificateand Diploma Courses, Basair has a range ofcourses for the trainee wishing to study part-

time, or to gain alternative qualifications to

those offered.

Courses

Basair courses assume no previous flying

experience or knowledge. Each courseoutlined in this material provides training

from ab-initio through to full Commercial PilotLicence.

Several Professional Pilot courses areavailable, each one catering to a differentcareer stream for the candidate.

! Full time study can be undertaken forany of the Professional Pilot series, plus our accredited Diploma and

Advanced Diploma Airline Pilotcourses.

! Part time study is available for any ofthe Professional Pilot series.

Professional Pilot Series

Available on both a part time and full timestudy basis, these courses give the greatestflexibility in both scheduling and financialcommitment.

The basic course is for a Commercial PilotLicence, with other courses providing training

beyond that level.

Payment for the training can be made as thecourse progresses, or in instalments.

Diploma & Advanced Diploma Airline Pilot

Courses

Designed for the candidate who wishes to

obtain a high qualification level, with the mostefficient full time training program. Thesecourses contain training for a CommercialPilot Licence and Multi Engine Command

Instrument Rating as a minimum. Additionaltheory on subjects such as marketing, and

computing is also covered. Depending on thecourse chosen, Airline Transport Pilot Licencetheory or a Grade III Flight Instructor Rating

are also included in the courses.

The Advanced Diploma of Aviation (AirlinePreparation - Flight Instruction) courseprovides the best path for a trainee to obtain

employment in General Aviation immediately

on completion of the course.

Employment Prospects

Basair evaluates all trainees for potentialemployment on the completion of theircourse.

Candidates are evaluated on the basis ofperformance during the course, effort made, skills obtained, general flying proficiency, personality and demeanour. Successfulcandidates will be interviewed on completion

of their course.

Any candidates who are evaluated forpotential employment may also berecommended to another operator foremployment.

Basair has an extensive network of contacts in

the aviation industry and our VocationalGuidance service allows candidates to berecommended to an operator who is currently

seeking new flight crew

Whatpeople say aboutBasair“I highly recommend Basair's Advanced

Diploma in Aviation course. From day one thecourse has proven challenging, yet highly

rewarding.

The enthusiastic instructors demonstrate theircommitment to quality coaching and supportvia interactive ground lessons and exciting in-

flight tuition. As the Diploma class isencouraged to progress as a class it is thisteam environment that fosters a strong

support network to ensure all studentsachieve their best.

It is this approach to aviation schooling which

reinforces Basair's reputation as Sydney'spremier flying institution.”

Justin Clarke.

Advanced Diploma of Aviation.

“All Instructors I have had have all been

extremely helpful. They have all been morethan willing to help with any aspect of flying, and have all provided instruction to a very

high standard.

The course has been very enjoyable in allaspects. It has been very rewarding, and

contributing to this is the quality of theinstruction provided.”

“Darrin, I wish to take the opportunity ofcongratulating you on the standards of BasairI encountered and in particular the work ofmy flight instructor.

I come from a background which perhapsgives me some authority in simply stating itwas above and beyond my expectations. Iwas particularly impressed with Charles'instructional style and skills.

I am not usually given to responding in such a

way but thought in this instance I would. Welldone!”

Paul Baker.

Private Pilot Licence.

“I spent 6 years in the Royal Air Force asTactical Communications Specialist and

always wondered what it would be like if I had

chosen a career as a Pilot. Due to agerestrictions of the Royal Air Force pilotrecruiting policy (19-23) I decided to research

a company that would give me professionaltraining to the highest standards that would

prepare me for the Civil Aviation Industry.

After some research, I decided to undertakethe Advanced Diploma of Aviation course(Flight Instructor) with Basair due to theprofessionalism portrayed in dealing with

my requests and the supply of information to

me as an international student. The fact thatBasair trains their clients in the busiest airportin Australia (Bankstown Airport) was also

attractive as real life/live environment offersgreat experience compared to other schools Ihad considered. The Advanced Diploma

course comprises of 14 months of solid study

which would normally take 3 yearsat University. This I also found to be very

advantageous considering my age with

advancing within aviation industry.

At present I am completing my

Commercial exams and can confirm thequality of training is to a high standard. I find

myself setting high personal goals to improvemy general flying in anyway that is possible. Ihighly recommend Basair as a high quality

training facility that looks to achieve my

maximum potential and drive my motivation

beyond the Commercial licence.”

“The Diploma course from day one has been

well balanced between flying and theory. Thecourse has been structured to develop theskills and knowledge required to attain thedesired level of training, with the instructorsand staff being friendly and easily

approachable to answer any questions.

The flight training has been to a high

standard, with the ground work equally

meeting the high standards that Basairachieves. The effort required is intense, butthe knowledge gains in a short period of timehas been immense.

All these factors contribute to the highly

rewarding and enjoyable training that theDiploma course provides.”

Lyndon Batchelor.

“Darrin, we have not met but I wished to takethe opportunity of congratulating you on thestandards of Basair I encountered today and

in particular the work of my flight instructor.

I come from a background which perhapsgives me some authority in simply stating itwas above and beyond my expectations. Iwas particularly impressed with hisinstructional style and skills.

Paul Baker.

Diploma of Aviation.

“I have been a student with Basair for almosta year now and last Saturday (15th April) Ipassed my GFPT with flying colors under very

windy conditions of 20-22 knots crosswind.

I have done majority of my training under theinstruction of Stuart Venison. Purpose ofwriting this email is to acknowledge theincredible job that Stuart has done since hetook over as my instructor.

I am a business owner and recognise theimportance of commending people who

continuously perform beyond their call ofduty. These people are true human assetsand in a service based industry, they

represent core reasons for customersatisfaction and success of an organisation.

In my opinion Stuart Venison is a human

asset for Basair. I am writing to commend him

not because he does his job well, but becausetime and again he has gone beyond his call ofduty through his display of professionalism, subject matter expertise, understanding and

commitment towards helping me excel as a

pilot.

It is my humble request that his efforts berecognised in a manner you deem fit. It willonly encourage him and other people within

Basair to provide a level of service that truly

represents your company as a leader in theeyes of your customers.

Abhishek Bhattacharjee

Private Pilot Licence.

“I was a recent student at Basair and I am

writing to thank you and your staff for a mostprofessional and enjoyable learning

experience.

I studied for my PPL with Basair whilst I wasworking in Sydney and I gained 35 hours ofvaluable flying time including 5 hours of solo

flying.

From the moment I started with Basair therewas a clear emphasis on safety whilstmaintaining the enjoyment of flying. I have to

admit that I was a little nervous when I firststarted, but after a couple of lessons with my

instructor the fear had disappeared and Irealised that in flying I had discovered a new

pleasure that would be with me for life.

I found my instructor to have all the qualitiesthat in my opinion makes a first rateinstructor. His attention to safety was alwaysparamount as was his eye for detail. Hecommunicated information in a clear, concisemanner and taught me the value of good

airmanship and forward-thinking.

Once again a big thank you to all at Basair. The training I received far exceeded my

expectations and I hope to study with Basairagain at some point in the near future.”

QANTAS Pilot career informationThe following information has been reproduced from the QANTAS general recruitmentinformation and details the pilot career requirements for joining QANTAS. This is a usefulreference in deciding which course of study is the most appropriate, as well as what the generalcareer path is once employed by QANTAS.

“A career as a Qantas pilot is an extremely rewarding one in terms of jobsatisfaction and self-esteem. The much-publicised aspect of financial reward iscommensurate with the time, work and effort required to maintain the position. Thelearning process will continue throughout your flying career.

Study for a career as a Qantas pilot begins in a school where you should bestudying English, Mathematics and Science for years Eleven and Twelve. TheScience subject may be a multi-element subject but ensure you include an elementof physics, it may be Physics or it may be Engineering Science. Your subject choiceand marks achieved should allow you to matriculate to a major university to studyscience.

At school you should take any opportunities to develop skills in leadership, teamwork, awareness and co-ordination. Practise leading people; involve yourself in teamor group activities; read, listen, observe, do and appreciate as much as you areable; practise and participate in eye-hand, and eye-hand-foot co-ordination activitiesincluding sports such as cricket, baseball, softball, hockey, tennis, squash and golf.It is recommended you take a full Commercial or Air Transport Pilot Licence medicalexamination, including a check of your hearing and eyesight before you make yoursubject choice for years Eleven and Twelve. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority orFlying Training organisation will support you with the details of your mostconvenient Approved Medical Examiner. If a flying career is to be denied to youbecause of medical problems it is best to know before choosing subjects for the finaltwo years of school.

After school the decision to start flying training straight away or continue study isyours. You do not require a degree to fly with Qantas as a pilot.

You should plan to undertake your own flying training. Qantas does not sponsorpeople to learn to fly, we employ people who have:

! A Commercial Pilot Licence;

! A Command Instrument Rating;

! A multi-engine aircraft endorsement on their licence;

! Passed the Air Transport Pilot Licence theory examination and have 500 hoursflying experience in command of an aircraft.

After gaining your Commercial Pilot Licence you will have to find employment in theGeneral Aviation industry. There are many different flying activities includinginstructing, freight, aerial tours, charter, mustering, survey, joyflights, or flying forthe smaller airlines which present opportunities for pilots to build their experience tothe minimum level required to join Qantas.

Qantas advertises pilot vacancies in the major newspapers. These advertisementsinclude the application criteria and a request for qualified pilots to apply.

Page 14: Cpl Information

Basair Aviation College – Commercial Pilot Licence Courses 7310.25.0107 14

A comprehensive Pilot Selection Process, comprising assessments of abilities, personality, aptitude, medical fitness and two interviews is applied to ensure thequality of recruits entering Qantas is very high.

A successful applicant will spend between four and six months training with Qantasbefore commencing flying on regular services. You will learn the aircraft systems, flying procedures, flight planning, navigation and emergency procedures on theaircraft simulators.

You will leave the Training Centre as a Second Officer.

Second Officers are carried on long-range flights so Qantas can conform to theFlight and Duty time limitations by allowing the Captain and First Officer to take restperiods off the Flight Deck. The time spent observing other crew members duringtakeoff and landing, plus the practice obtained by flying the aircraft in cruise, is acontinuation of the learning process, begun in school, which will prepare the SecondOfficer for training for Promotion to First Officer. Promotion to First Officer may beoffered after attaining Second Officer rank and depends on vacancies occurring, seniority, proficiency and the successful completion of the promotion course.

First officers are Co-Captains. They make command decisions and judgements whileoperating ‘In Command Under Supervision’ of the Captain. First Officers areapproved to fly the aircraft during takeoff and landing, as well as in cruise.

First Officers could expect to begin Command training between three and ten yearsafter promotion to First Officer, depending again on vacancies, seniority, proficiencyand successful completion of a training course which may take up to six months.

The Captain has the ultimate responsibility for each flight; for the aircraft, the crew, the passengers and the freight.

Retirement age from Qantas is currently 55 years but pilots may extend theiremployment to 60 years by agreement with the company. Adequate superannuationis available together with other benefits which may change slightly from time totime.

A Qantas pilot may expect to be away from home for up to six months a year. Mostexpenses incurred away from Sydney are met by Qantas.

The opportunities to see the world, work with the latest technology which ismaintained to the highest standards and operate as part of a highly trained, motivated and dedicated crew of professional people both in the air and on theground is well worth the time, work and effort which begins in school and continuesthroughout your career as a pilot.

Qantas is in a service industry which exposes it to the cycles of booms and busts inboth the domestic and international economies. Cycles of growth and contraction ina pilot's employment are a result. The ‘windows of opportunity’ to join Qantas as apilot open infrequently and irregularly and for varying lengths of time. Young peoplewho want to fly with Qantas must be qualified and ready to apply when the‘window’ is open. You cannot be sure there will be sufficient time to qualify beforethe ‘window’ closes again. You have to be prepared.

Good luck with your career endeavours. If you choose aviation we are sure you willenjoy it and we hope to see you flying with Qantas.”

What makes our courses better?Choosing who to trust for the training that will give you your career in aviation can be a difficulttask. There are, however some very important things that you should ensure are provided as partof the course you do. We are pleased to advise that allour Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses have thefollowing advantages for you:

! Our courses are structured and are conducted in a

classroom environment. You are not required to “selfstudy”.

! There are no hidden costs - we include all that you

need in your course to start your aviation career.

! All maps and charts are included - you don't have to

reach into your pocket during your course to buy all those things that you weren't told about.

! All pilot equipment is included in your Pilot Support Pack - including protractor, navigation

computer, scale rule, fuel drain and knee board.

! We supply (as part of your course fee) professional Jeppesen materials for navigation training. These are the same documents that airline pilots all around the world use. Instead of using

cheap alternatives we use the same materials that professional pilots all around the world use.

! All flight tests are included - both aircraft costs and Approved Test Officer fees. These can bean expensive addition to a course.

! Landing fees are included - both at your home base, as well as away.

! Fuel costs are included - even if you buy fuel away from base. Many other courses require you

to pay extra if you buy aircraft fuel away from base.

! Fees are locked in for the course once it starts - there are no nasty

surprises during your course.

! No fuel surcharges. With the cost of fuel becoming more significantaround the world you may be concerned about what effect this willhave on your course. The answer is simple - no effect at all. We won'timpose any surcharges or other penalties if fuel prices rise during yourcourse.

! Overseas student health cover is included - you don't have to worry

about obtaining health insurance (as is required for your visa) - wesupply coverage for you.

! A range of aircraft are used. You won't be only flying the most basicaircraft - you will gain experience on a range of aircraft types and willtherefore be a better pilot.

! The flying hours in our course structure are realistic and are based on

our experience in running these courses for the last 10 years. We don'tquote unrealistic minimum hours that can't be achieved, and which

results in additional costs.

! There are two campuses where you can undertake your course –Bankstown south west of Sydney and Cessnock/Newcastle to the north of Sydney.

! At both campuses our aircraft are parked closer to the runways than anyone else – meaning

you don’t waste time taxying on the ground – and you get straight into your lesson.

! Basair was the winner of the 2005 "Business Awards - Aviation Business", the 2006 "BusinessAwards - Aviation Business" and the 2006 "Business Awards – Business of the Year".

General InformationAll training provided by Basair is of the highest quality, and the formal structure of our coursesprovides a learning process with precisely defined goals.

A candidate is trained with a small group of other students at the same level of experience and atthe same time will interact with students at varying levels in other courses. This provides a morestimulating learning environment.

Basair is not a high turnover flying college but a medium sized college that maintains an emphasison the quality of training and personal attention. At Basair the Chief Flying Instructor is continually

in contact with all instructors, and closely monitors the progress of students, as well as thestandards being achieved.

While the learning environment at Basair promotes the highest standards of professionalism, it isalso an enjoyable place to study. Class sizes are kept small, with each student receiving personaltuition. Interaction with other Basair students is a vital part of the learning process for a

professional pilot who will have to deal with many different people as their passengers. Basair hasa reputation for quality training, with a pleasant atmosphere. Our fly away trips, competition daysand other social events are as much a part of our full-time students lives as they are for our part-

time students.

Vocational Guidance

Our vocational guidance service is provided to students to help with both selection of courses and

career paths in the initial stages, to job placements on completion of their training. Counselling isavailable at any time. A course review committee ensures that course content is always updated

to keep abreast of changing technology, as well as with changing industry needs.

Why fly with Basair?Deciding who to trust your flying training to can be confusing. Whether you are going to fly part time or full time, it is an important decision and one where often facts are in short supply. Below you'll find a list of just some of the reasons we feel you should trust your training to us. We have the largest training fleet of aircraft in Sydney. The fleet is well maintained, clean and fun to fly! Our fleet size means that you will be able to get a booking when you want - you won't be trying to find a booking on just 2 or 3 aircraft.

We have a range of aircraft to fly - not just one or two types. Our range means that there is always something new and exciting to challenge you and to upgrade your skills.

We have a fleet of 6 brand new Tecnam 2002JF aircraft for training. These 21

st century

aircraft encompass the very latest design, modern aircraft engines and superior handling. These aircraft are a leap ahead even compared to new Cessna 172 aircraft since the 172 is actually a very old design (first produced in 1955) that has been updated to look more

modern. The Tecnam JF on the other hand is a brand new design, incorporating the latest engines (with advances like electronic ignition) and completely refined flying characteristics. See www.tecnam.com for more information.

Established in 1991 – we are a long term player in the industry. We've got an established reputation in the industry for providing quality training at competitive prices. We've seen many organisations come and go, often causing much distress to their students, so the value of flying with a reputable, proven and well established organisation cannot be over-emphasised.

Basair is a member of several important industry organisations, including the Aviation Safety Foundation of Australia (www.asfa.net.au), the Regional Aviation Association of Australia (www.raaa.org.au) and the Australian Council for Private Education and Training (www.acpet.com.au).

We're a Sydney based organisation - and we've been training people at Bankstown Airport since 1991. We didn't start elsewhere and are now trying to learn the local procedures - we started at Bankstown, and we know the important procedures and techniques to use to make the most of your training.

The owner of the business (Darrin Ward) is a professional flying instructor. And works in the business full time! There is no better way to understand how a business is functioning than to work in the business on a daily basis. Darrin keeps a close eye on the training of all students and supported by a team of professionals ensures that the standard of training provided is the best available.

Dedicated facilities - not located in the "back of a hangar". You want facilities that will help you learn in a professional, pleasant and comfortable environment. Basair's facilities have been designed by Basair staff as dedicated flying training premises. You're not going to be stuck in classrooms at the back or side of a hangar with all the problems - noise, distractions, smells, and interruptions. We have clean, air conditioned rooms that are specifically designed for aviation training.

We can teach all courses in house - right through to (and including) flight instructor ratings. We don't have to send you elsewhere to gain additional qualifications. We have approval from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority to teach for all licence qualifications and ratings right through to the Flight Instructor Rating. Being allowed to train other people how to teach new students is

Page 33: Cpl Information

a sure recognition of the trust that CASA has in Basair.

Our courses are accredited. We have accreditation through the NSW Vocational Education and Training Accreditation Board (VETAB) for our Private Pilot Licence and Commercial Pilot Licence courses. In fact - Basair was the first flying training organisation in Sydney to obtain the very latest Competency Based Training approvals, and we've held accreditation since 1996.

We hold our own course accreditation - we don't licence someone else's courses. Rather than simply licencing courses from another organisation we've put the work into designing courses to suit the way we teach. This has lead to such success with our courses that we now have other organisations around Australia licencing our courses to teach to their students.

GST free flying is available. Holding accreditation for our Private Pilot Licence course (Certificate IV level) allows our students to obtain their PPL without paying GST. Without this accreditation you'd be paying another 10% for your flying training - all in tax!

We own the majority of our aircraft - we don't rely on other people. Most people new to the aviation industry don't realise that many flying schools own very few of the aircraft that they use for training. This means they have to lease aircraft from aircraft owners. Those schools have no control over their aircraft - the maintenance being performed, upgrading the aircraft, even whether the aircraft will be available next week! At Basair we don't believe that students should have to put up with this uncertainty so we own all of our basic training fleet, and we lease in only those aircraft that provide an interesting supplement to the basic fleet that we own.

Custom written training manuals, including supplementary CD. These manuals provide a wealth of additional information that you can't find in any textbooks. This information is the practical, “hands on“ hints and tips for your flying, plus a useful summary of aircraft information, radio procedures and airport information.

Basair was the first Australian flying school on the Internet. Basair had an Internet presence in 1996 - long before many people had even heard of the Internet! From November 1996 we were keeping in touch with our pilots by email, and helping people find out about flying through cyberspace.

Comprehensive staff training regime before any instructors start working for us. All our staff members undergo a rigorous induction program when they first join Basair. This covers everything from how we teach people to fly, to how the business is run. We also have an ongoing staff training program that ensures this knowledge, and staff skills, are maintained at the highest levels.

Standards set above CASA minimums for staff upgrades. We don't work to minimum standards - we always set our standards higher than what the Civil Aviation Safety Authority sets. This includes for our own staff. When our staff members are going to upgrade their qualifications they don’t just have to meet CASA's requirements - they have to also meet ours, which set a much higher standard. Staff will have to study hard to improve their knowledge prior to being able to upgrade their qualifications.

Page 34: Cpl Information

A recent survey of clients indicates that 99% of our clients rate us above average for quality of training, aircraft and facilities.

Due to our many contacts within the aviation industry we offer our Commercial Pilot Licence trainees the best opportunities for gaining that lucrative first job. This has been built up by training pilots for many years (since 1991) and ensures that our successful trainees can look forward to excellent employment prospects.

We have past staff and students now flying with airlines all around the world, including QANTAS, Cathay Pacific, Eastern, REX etc.

Since 2000 we have been utilising a start of the art electronic aircraft and instructor booking system. This custom designed system gives us the ability to schedule your training well into the future, as well as to keep close tabs on aircraft and instructor availability.

Diploma, Advanced Diploma courses for career pilots. Fully accredited, AUSTUDY eligible. A comprehensive career counselling service is provided to all our Commercial Pilot Licence trainees. If you're looking at a career as an airline pilot then we have the best range of courses available to help you achieve your goals including innovative courses leading to a Degree.

Professional training environment. Custom designed training manuals, CASA approved courses, well maintained aircraft, an excellent safety record, plus experienced instructors who undergo continual professional development. These advantages mean that you are trained to

a higher level, and will be a more confident and competent pilot. There is no price compromise on safety.

We don’t sell down to a price. You won’t find us bragging about being “the cheapest” flying school around. Would you like to trust your training to an organisation that thinks that the most important part of flying is being the cheapest? We provide value for money flying training that we are confident is better than any other training available. There is a false economy in undertaking “cheap” training because without fail, this training will take longer than carefully thought out and planned training – and will therefore cost more in the long term, while appearing to be “cheaper” when comparing rates. The old saying is very true in aviation – “you get what you pay for”.

No membership fees are payable for flying with Basair. Some flying clubs require you to pay an annual membership fee, adding significantly to the cost of your flying.

Basair was the winner of the 2005 Business Awards – for the category of “Best Aviation Business”. See www.thebusinessawards.com

Our operations have been copied by many other flying schools. As the saying goes - imitation is the best form of flattery, and many schools have tried to imitate the Basair way of doing things. They'll never be able to copy it all - but some of the things that we were the first with, and that have been copied include:

• Regular weekend BBQs - since 1996

• Advanced flying seminars - since 1998

• Electronic booking system - since 2000

• Regular newsletters - since 1991

• Complimentary Internet access for our clients - since 1999

• VETAB accredited courses – since 1996
