CPD SPORTS & EXERCISE MEDICINE COURSES 25 March 2014 and 28 October 2014 Aberdeen Sports Village The University of Aberdeen has developed this course based on a successful event in 2013. This first event is split into two half days – participants can decide to attend either or both. This course aims to develop your theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding of the current issues around head injury and concussion, with the afternoon session focussed on the health-related benefits of exercise, psychological barriers to exercise, practical aspects of exercise consultations and exercise prescription (including green prescriptions and monitoring adverse effects). Its purpose is to develop a good level of understanding in the following areas: Concussion Head injury in sport The pathology of concussion Practical approaches to assessment and referral following concussive head injury Exercise Health and Disease The benefits of exercise for disease reduction and prevention Exercise prescription and monitoring The psychology of exercise for health Practical approaches in exercise consultations The future of exercise prescription HEAD FIRST: A seminar for pitch side and primary care management of concussion Concussion - who has the responsibility?– Jonathan Hanson (SEM Physician) Head injury in sport- who needs to go to hospital? – Mark Mitchelson (EM Consultant) Practical advice for return to play following concussive head injury.- James Robson (Scottish Rugby Union) The pathology of concussion and links to CTE – Willie Stewart (Consultant neuropathologist) Post-concussion syndrome – who to refer? – Dr Jackie Hamilton (Clinical Neuropsychologist, ARI) Practical Workshop Primary care concussion tools -the SCAT3 form. - Jonathan Hanson and James Robson

OCTOBER 2014: HEALTHY EXERCISEFollowing the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, it is anticipated that there will be an increased interest in sportand exercise across the population. This course aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of the health-related benefits of exercise, appropriate exercise schemes for special populations, and the physiology andmanagement of sports injuries.

The course has been developed in conjunction with a range of academic staff from the College of Life Sciences andMedicine at the University of Aberdeen and in conjunction with local practising GPs, Medics and orthopaedic injuryspecialists.

RegistrationRegistration fee for a half day event will be £105.00 – registration for both half day sessions will be 195.00.There is no VAT charge; the registration fee will include attendance at the course, delegate pack, lunch andrefreshments on the day. Discounts for groups of three or more attendees from the same organisations areapplicable.
