What kills Hot Water Tanks?NeglectThe most dangerous enemy of the hot water heater is often the people who buy them and then forget about them. Leaks can develop over time and can slowly destroy a heater from both the inside as well as the outside.

Internal RustHot water tanks come from the manufacturer with sacrificial anodes installed to prevent them from rusting. The key word is “sacrificial” as these types of anodes get used up as they function. Once they are depleted to approximately 50% of their original size, the inside of the tank becomes vulnerable to corrosion. It’s worth pointing out here that water softeners often speed up the anode consumption. The sacrificial anodes depletion rates will vary based on water temperatures, amount of water passing it and the mineral contents in the water.

Sediment Build UpSediment build up inside the tank is typically made up primarily of limestone which is known to separate from the water with temperature and/or pressure change. It builds up on the bottom of the tank, elements, inlets and outlets. Scale build up requires extra energy to heat the water (increasing operating costs) while creating hotspots on the tank which speeds up the corrosion process on these spots.

Impressed-current anodes are not "sacrificial", so they are not consumed during use. They feed a very small amount of electricity into the tank to replace that produced by sacrificial anodes. The electrode is made of titanium. Interestingly, while sacrificial anodes are consumed more rapidly in softened water. Powered anodes actually work more efficientlybecause higher conductivity makes it easier for electricity to flow between anode and cathode (tank steel).

When the anode rod is in the hot water tank, the oxygen molecule wants to take two electrons from the anode rod or the tank. The anode rod gives up its two electrons quicker than the tank's metal and protects the tank from corrosion until it is depleted.
