The home of Stephanie and Bill Hayden is tucked away in Sharpe with beautifully landscaped grounds and an attractive brick exterior, but what’s inside is still a surprise!

The sheer volume of this 9,000 sq. ft. home is the fi rst surprise, but the attention to detail, the feeling of warmth, the comfortable verandas, and the livability of this space is what leaves visitors in awe. Without even meeting the Haydens, one can surmise that this home is all about family and entertaining.

The “old” part of the house, as Stephanie calls it, was built in 1983. About eight years ago, her dreams of remodeling and expanding came to fruition. “I had seen a house plan in Paducah that would be ideal for the new part of the house, and we consulted our builder, J.B. Cren-shaw, with the ideas,” she said. “He confi rmed that we could incorporate the new plans with our existing home. He did a great job, although it’s bigger than we fi rst thought it would be.”

The home has three bedrooms, two spa-cious home offi ces that could be bedrooms, three full baths and two half-baths, two kitch-ens, three dining areas, three family rooms and several outdoor entertaining areas. When any or all of the merged families—six children and 14 grandchildren—come to visit, everyone has plenty of room.

“It’s great having two kitchens around the holi-days. We have a spacious walk-in closet that was added to the master bedroom that we created where a garage used to be,” Stephanie explained.

The remodel of the “old” part of the house belies the fact that something else existed in this space. Everything from the vanity and tub in the master suite to the laundry room where a bedroom once was is large and totally utilized.

The Haydens spend most of their time in the remodeled part of the home. “We have a large recreation area where we display collages of all our children’s accomplishments and interests encompassing scholarships, diplomas, beauty contest wins and sports. We are so proud of the people they have become and are so blessed to be able to share their lives,” Stepha-nie explained.

The walls of this room full of memo-ries are attractively appointed with those large framed collections featur-ing alma maters of the children — Lone Oak, Marshall County, Heath, UK, Murray State, SIU and John A. Logan — where son, Scott Chambers, began his baseball career. He signed with the Dodgers in the early 1990s.

A billiard table, big comfortable chairs and sofas, a rustic mantel, colorful rugs and pillows with touches of red and accent pieces from Trees ‘n Trends complete the décor in this area.

Bill spends a lot of time in this room since that is where the “big screen” is.

A view outside to the veranda through French doors and windows allows light into the den. “I sometimes escape to the adjoining mas-ter bedroom where I can pull the curtains for privacy, turn on the gas logs, and cuddle up to read or watch TV,” Stephanie added. (There are three fi replaces.)

With a little help from Paducah interior de-signer, DJ Lyons, the lady of the house se-lected paints in reds and golds for many of the walls. Breaking from this color scheme in the children’s room are lime-green walls and nauti-cal blue and crisp white bedding and accent pieces.

“DJ also suggested removing some of the kitchen cabinet doors in this remodeled part of the house and placing decorative items in it, since I didn’t really need all of the cabi-net space,” she noted. The idea provided another nook for some of Stephanie’s fl oral designs, which are found on the mantels and doors and carefully placed throughout the house.

“Decorating is one of my hobbies. Your house can feel new again by changing out fl owers and wreaths with the seasons! At Christmas, for example, I have four trees which the kids help decorate with their hand-made ornaments. I use big Christmas balls and stems and always put a fun tree in the den,” she explained.

“I leave a few red things out and add to them for Valentine’s and then I bring out the Easter decorations, bunnies and forsythia, when we move into spring. In the fall I dec-orate with pumpkins, of course. Thanks to my gifted husband, I have a huge storage area upstairs where I am able to keep all of my supplies, arrangements, and wreaths stored and protected,” she continued.

The 4th of July is an important holiday in the Hayden household. They display fi re-works near the road in from their home to help celebrate. Bill spent over 40 years as a Special Forces major in the U.S. Army and retired from the Reserves. Today he runs his own business as an electrical engineer and is also a general superintendent for Dimen-sion Construction out of Memphis, Tenn.

Hayden’s home offi ce also refl ects the military background. “I wanted Bill to have a special place so the items found in this offi ce refl ect his hard work and dedication to our country,” his wife commented. Stephanie’s offi ce is used for her part-time work. She was a Kirby vacuum distributor for 30 years and recently closed her store in Murray.

Moving into the newest part of the house, one quickly notices the extensive thick moldings; the eye travels from hardwood fl oors (purchased at Home Floor Center and fi nished by Paducah craftsman Bob Hopwood) up to the recessed ceilings where heavy chandeliers, numerous light fi xtures, and canned lights are strategically placed. The tall ceilings are in contrast to those in the other part of the house where lower ones make that space feel “warm,” Stephanie pointed out.

one area in the huge living area, while another round table with antiqued wicker arm chairs provides additional seating just inside the kitchen. Wherever guests are seated, they can view the rooms’ interest-ing furniture and heavy gold framed oil paintings and oversized mirrors.

They can also enjoy views of crepe myrtles and fl owers fl irting at the mullioned windows. Bill and Stephanie both love landscaping and do it themselves. She sketches out ideas, they choose items from local nurseries, and he does the heavy work.

A baby grand piano, a few silk plants, and soft fabrics on sofas and chairs grace the more formal living room.

Last, and certainly not least, is a “tro-phy” kitchen. The voluminous, glamorous kitchen with its tall antiqued ivory cabine-try, beautifully decorated shelves, granite counters, and attractive hanging light fi x-tures is as practical as it is POSH. Natural-ly it is the hub of the home for a family who loves getting together and entertaining.

“We also love to sit outside and enjoy quiet time and the views. We’re not big on travel. We’d rather stay home and have friends, family or our church group here. The children love to be outside, too, and there’s not a lot of traffi c on this road,” Stephanie added.

Little do passers-by know what a sur-prise lies inside the front doors of this new and “old” home in Sharpe. ■

Jan Crawford and ReneeTilley are practi-cally lifelong friends.

“When we moved to Paducah, Renee was the fi rst person to call, and she asked me out to lunch. It’s ironic that we live

next door to each other.”The Crawfords and Tilleys share a common wall

between their townhouses. To make it even cozier, they also share a front lawn and a brick garden wall at the rear. As one might expect, there is a pass-through in the garden wall, bringing the families together.

The houses are mirror images of each other and the plans have been modifi ed differently. In no way are the colors and furnishings similar. The Til-leys prefer neutral walls throughout, accented with red and green, while the Crawfords chose black and stark white walls with splashes of red and blue.

The Crawford house has raised ceilings and a fl oor-to-ceiling fi replace.

The basic plan for the townhouses specifi es a counter between the kitchen and great room. Omitting this feature in the Crawford kitchen allowed space to install an uphol-stered banquette at the end of the room. This blue-upholstered bench was built to provide storage in the bottom for table linens and dinner-ware.

Like other residents on Summer Place, the Crawfords were ready to down-size from their previous home.

“We didn’t use our house as much,” Jan explained. “We were traveling more. We wanted to be able to come and go without a lot of responsibility. One of the reasons we did this was so we could visit our grandson.”

Also, like some other residents, the Crawfords were able to add their own ideas to the construction lay-out.

“We worked with Marcus (Burnett) from the get-go,” she said.

a large garden with swimming pool and screened porch. This amenity has been downsized to a lap pool at the rear of their new home.

Another change in planning was to roof and screen-in the porch, “because we en-joyed our screened porch so much at our other house.”

Jan’s college major was in interior design, and she loves decorating. This is evidenced in her new home, where she has called on her talent for innovative ideas. Black walls in a dining or living room would be consid-ered daring and unusual, but they work beau-tifully in the Crawford house. Just as daring might be stark white walls, but they are ac-cented with colorful furnishings and vivid art on the walls.

The keeping room takes on an updated and casual look with red and blue furnishings and accents.

“I wanted a place for the family to relax and have fun,” Jan said. “Open and fun; that was my vision.”

She likes to get ideas from home deco-rating magazines and, in fact, fi lled seven scrapbooks with clippings during the planning stages of the house. By the time construction began, she had narrowed her collection of ideas down to two scrap-books.

In the planning process, a new house did not necessarily mean new furnishings.

“I used tons of stuff from our other house,” she said. Example: a brown hutch in the great room was updated with a coat of red paint. A game table in the fam-ily room of the old house is now used for intimate dining.

Basically, she said, the decorating pro-cess was taking furnishings from the old house and seeing how they worked in dif-ferent areas.

Decorating a new home has been a good thing for Jan Crawford.

“If I had known how easy it would be,” she said, “I would have done it sooner.

“We love it here.” ■

The Tilleys

Renee and Steve Tilley are enjoying the peace and serenity of a sub-urban neighborhood.

“We both lived in the city all our lives,” Renee said, “We love it here. It’s so quiet.”

The Tilleys live in a townhouse on Summer Place, in Brookhaven, a residential area created by co-developers Mary Sue Brooks and Marcus Burnett.

Like other residents on Sum-mer Place, the Tilleys had chosen to downsize both living space and yard. The townhouses contain 2,800 square feet on the ground level and an unfi nished upstairs. Some homeowners, like the Til-leys, have fi nished out a portion of the second fl oor, while others, are

using it for storage. The Tilleys decided to fi nish 600 square feet of the second fl oor to allow for 2 bedrooms, a bath, and a sitting area.

On the main fl oor of the Tilleys town-house are a living room, a great room, kitchen with dine-in space, dining room, two bedrooms, two baths, a study and laundry room. To the rear are porches large enough for dining as well as relaxing.

The rooms are spacious, with vaulted ceilings that make them appear larger, and welcome sunlight coming through the many windows.

“We wanted as much light as we could get,” Steve said.

The Tilley’s blended family includes fi ve adult children from previous marriages and 2 grandchildren, a son-in-law and a daughter-in-law. When a recent funeral brought 25 family members together, there was plenty of room in the well-planned space.

Many townhouses were purchased before or during construction, giving owners the opportu-nity to make design options with co-developers Mary Sue Brooks and Marcus Burnett. The ba-sic plans were the same, but some wanted such options as different ceiling treatments, location of doors, elimination of half-baths, fi replace loca-tions, etc. Some porches have partial ceilings, and some are screened-in.

The Tilley’s porch is partially roofed in order to provide shade.

“We don’t get the hot afternoon sun, so we can really enjoy it in the late afternoon and eve-nings,” Renee said.

The front elevations are identical.“The layouts are the same,” she explained,

“but you could add things. We put in extra clos-ets where we could.”

The building plan specifi ed a “Jack-and-Jill” bath between two bedrooms. The Tilleys or-dered the connecting doors to be eliminated, thus adding wall space to the bedrooms. Now,

We’ve got more functional, usable space than we had at our old house, even though it’s smaller (here.)

you enter the bath through a door in the hallway. It then made sense to eliminate a planned half-bath, thus increasing space in the adjacent laundry room.

Stairways in the townhouses are confi gured to the needs and lifestyles of the owners. The Tilleys had a stairway wall removed to give a more open look and to create shelving for artwork.

They have kept window treatments to a minimum in order to create a sunlit environment. They installed plantation shutters throughout; the only window treat-ments are in the master bedroom and living room.

On the basic layout, the kitchen is separated from the great room by a snack bar. The Tilleys wanted open space, so they re-located the bar. Cabinetry in the kitchen and the baths was made by Amish craftsmen.

“One thing we did was pipe the stereo system into six different areas of the house,” Steve said.

They chose hand-scraped, wide-plank hardwood for fl oors that will never require refi nishing.

They consulted with a carpenter of the construction crew, who used a sheet of cardboard as his draw-

ing board to construct fl oor to ceiling cabinets in the study.

Steve did a bit of remodeling of his own, by con-verting an entertainment center into a bar. The televi-sion set now hangs over the fi replace.

Construction on the Tilley townhouse begain in September 2011; they moved in the following June.

Sharing a common wall is no problem.“We don’t hear a thing,” Renee said. The Tilleys were not even disturbed by construction

noise on their street.Said Steve, “The houses are well-insulated.”Renee called the well-planned space in their home

“amazing.”“We’ve got more functional, usable space than we

had at our old house, even though it’s smaller (here),” Steve said. ■

A little TLCBy Pat BrockenboroughPhotography by William Carter

Heather Pierce loves old houses. Make that old houses in need of repair. Make that old houses in need of repair and a new owner. Make that old houses in need of repair and a new owner looking for a bargain.

She had noticed the saltbox-style house on Buckner Lane on her trips to Clark School, where her daughter at-tends class and to her church, Immanuel Baptist Church. It appeared to be vacant and in need of loving, tender care.

“I started doing some investigating,” she said, “ I called around, looked up the deed, and found out from the mortgage owner that it would be six months before it would go on the market.” The six-month waiting period turned out to be fortuitous because by the time the house came on the market the house in which the Pierce family had been living was sold.

The house was in repossession when the Pierces bought it from the mortgage holder through a Realtor.

The drive-bys on Buckner Lane indicated the work that had to be done: removal of the carport and above-

Before

ground swimming pool, construction of a new drive-way and garage, replacement of windows, repair of shutters, new paint, removal of a tree and new land-scaping.

Heather was only allowed to go through the inside for a few minutes while the owners were removing their belongings. But it was long enough to convince her that with time, talent and elbow grease, the house

could be remodeled to fi t the family’s needs. From previous experience she knew what she

was getting into.“It’s more expensive to remodel than to build,” she

admitted, “but I think older homes are more interest-ing and more fun.”

Then, there is the all-important factor of location, location, location.

“We can walk to the school, church, park and market,” she noted.

She learned that the house was built in 1938, and some of the original elements, such as crown mold-ing, remained intact. But there were problems. The stairway hand railing had been torn apart, and 18 spindles had to be replaced.

The Pierces began remodeling in September 2011.

They repainted, of course. The outdated kitchen was brought up to date with new appliances and removal of a side kitchen door.

New plumbing and a new heating and air system were installed.

A pantry and half bath were built in a pass-through from kitchen and living room.

“The pass-through was charming to me,” Heather said. “it’s something you don’t fi nd every day.”

A mantle in the living room was re-built and gas logs installed. A sun room adjacent to the living room is a space where daughters Hadley and Clara can enjoy their toys and games.

The stairway leads to the family’s bedrooms and baths. The master bath was installed in what Heather believes might have been a nursery.

“Older houses didn’t have master baths,” she pointed out.

Due to the state of the failing economy nationwide, large numbers of home owners have been losing their property to mortgage lenders. Sadly, the trend has fi ltered down to Mc-Cracken County.

The bad news is that in the month of Februrary, there were 30 repossessed residences scheduled to be sold. The good news is that of this number, 10 sales were canceled.

In mid-March, the number was higher. Twenty-seven resi-dences were scheduled to be sold, and of this number two sales have already cancelled.*

Cancellations are due primarily to two factors (1) an agree-ment is reached between the mortgagee and the mortgagor or (2) the mortgagee fi les for bankruptcy.

“The bulk of the sales are foreclosures,” said Master Commissioner Mark Ashburn, who effectuates the sales.

“Sometimes the property is sold because of taxes owed or to enforce a tax lien.”

Very rarely, he added, it is because the property is owned by two peope who are in diasagreement about its ownership.

Ashburn receives an order to sell the property from the McCracken Circuit Court Judge, for whatever reason, foreclosure, tax lien or personal dispute. He advertises the sale for three weeks — on Fridays in the Paducah Sun — and conducts the sale on the last Monday of the month. The sale is held, “on the court house steps,” as the saying goes, but inside the County Court House.

Ashburn’s offi ce chooses two Realtors to do an appraise-ment, a term which means that the appraiser does a “drive-by” evaluation of the property. Neither he nor the Realtor has the right to enter the residence. Only the owner has that right.

“At the sale,” he explained “I will give the street address and the appraisement.”

Buyer beware: Without the right to inspect the interior of the property, you may be taking on an expensive remodeling project. Another caveat is that if the buyer does not pay at least two-thirds of the appraisement value, the owner as a right of redemption. He has a one-year period to reclaim the property by purchasing it for the amount it was sold plus 12 percent interest. It would be unwise, then, for the new owner to lay out any expenses for which he could not be legally en-titled to receive reimbursement due to the right of redemption.

The buyer must also be prepared to write a check for at least two-thirds of the appraisement fi gure at the time of purchase to avoid the right of redemption.

After the sale there is a 10-day exception period allowing for a protest of the sale. After 30 days, the new owner must pay the balance of the purchase price, at which time he will receive the deed to the property.

People interested in purchasing a property that has already been sold by the commissioner to the mortgagor bank, may contact the bank, which in turn will refer them to a Realtor to handle the sale.

Buying a house at the courthouse door can be a good investment.

Said Ashburn, “I’ve seen people who got good deals and some who lost money.”

The 27 we have in March is already set, but the plaintiff has a right to cancel the salel until the morning of the scheduled sale.

Be patient, because (remodeling) is not always an easy process. ... It will be a good investment in the long term.

“”

The house was patched up, painted and remodeled by March 2012. There’s more to be done in the future, though. The basement will be refi nished to provide storage space, a family room and a den.

Redoing an older home is not for everybody, Heather pointed out. Her dream came true because of an enthusiastic crew, which consisted of various contractors, her husband Neil, and her father, Fred Vowell, who lives in an historic home on Foun-tain Ave. and is no stranger to remodeling projects.

“To me, the project, the planning, is fun,” Heather said. That might not be the case for others.“It depends on the person. A lot of people want to just move

in.” And there are caveats. “There’s the fear of the unknown, the time (involved).” Her advice: “Be patient, because (remodeling) is not always

an easy process.” And be cautious. Know what you are paying up front and what you have to put into it.

Was buying a repossessed house that needed major repairs a good investment?

“It will be a good investment in the long term,” she said. “It’s a nice place to be for all of us.” ■

ith the conclu-sion of the Quilt Show just two days ago, stitch-ing and sewing are fresh on our

minds. The beautifully made quilts seem to reach a new level of exqui-site design and expertise each year and the 2013 entries were certainly no exception.

Does the talent it takes to create such works of art come naturally? Was it learned at the foot of grand-mother’s rocker or was it taught at a local shop or even online? And how does one choose which area to pur-sue and perfect—embroidery, quilt-ing, needlepoint, cross-stitch?

Paducah resident Pat Gourieux

a master’s degree in chemistry from Murray State University, Pat’s choice of sewing as a hobby may seem unusual, but sewing came fi rst when she was growing up in Mayfi eld.

“My mother, Mary Washam, had a Singer sewing machine like most women who sewed back then and I started doing hand work and machine sew-ing as a teenager. A jumper was one of the fi rst things I made, and I enjoyed it from the beginning. I had a metal loom for potholders and made those, too.”

Her granddaughters are ages 2, 5 and 7, and the 7-year-old has already asked Pat to teach her to sew. “She’s not quite ready, but when she is, I will be happy to teach her.”

A walk through the home of Pat and David Gou-rieux takes some time if you stop and look at every item “Made by Pat.” Machine embroidered table toppers and fringed pillows, counted cross-stitch pieces, pleated curtains, and machine quilted throws for different seasons, framed hand-embroi-dered tone-on-tone inspirational pieces, and dish towels with colorful fruits are just a few items that she has used to decorate their home.

Page 39: Cozy - Amazon Web Servicesmatchbin-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/public/sites/1140/assets/73NH… · Pat Brockenborough Vicki Hunkler Advertising Director Carolyn Raney craney@paducahsun.com

In the corner of one guest bedroom, an antique rock-ing chair that Pat refi nished and recovered with her own needlepoint creation is a reminder of her grandmother. One of Pat’s quilts and several embroidered pillows adorn the bed.

“I’ve done a few monogrammed shirts and a robe for Dave. I’ve made golf (her second hobby) towels, casserole carriers, baby quilts and shoes, embroidered jackets, totes and purses, lace ornament covers, and monogrammed pillow cases,” she noted.

“Every Christmas, I make pillow cases for our daugh-ter Stephanie’s girls, Liza and Emily, and our son Der-rick’s daughter, Ceci. I sew a tag inside with the date so they will always remember.”

A unique gift idea Pat had for a friend followed a rooster theme. Her friend had rugs in the rooster mo-tif, so Pat copied pictures of them from catalogs and made matching kitchen towels for her.

“I don’t have any certain subject or any one color scheme that I do. I like it all, although I do lean toward deep reds, browns, and earthy tones when I choose colors.”

In the spacious sewing room at the Gourieux’ home, one of three machines is in full gear as Pat checks the settings for lace bookmarks she makes to place in greeting cards. “I went to a class in St. Louis on the topic of Stabilizers Used for Embroidery. This lace design of a cross uses a wash-away stabilizer,” she explained. The results are incredible if you have never seen a computerized machine like this.

Hanging on the sewing room wall are three counted cross-stitch pieces that feature rabbits. They were in her offi ce before she retired. “We always laughed about these because we used to say we work to protect bugs and bunnies (environmental clean-up) and they were a reminder!”

Pat did not take classes until she retired and she only added machine quilting to her repertoire four years ago. “My interest in quilting was due to the Quilt Show. I’ve housed quilters and enjoyed talking to them. It was a natural evolution to move into quilting,” she said. Pat sometimes integrates quilting with sewing when creat-ing a child’s jacket or a table topper, for example.

Her advice to anyone who is just starting out is to take advantage of some of the free lessons offered in the Paducah area. “Go to dealers who offer lessons on the machines and those for beginners. A machine is like a car. It needs to be maintained every 12-18 months and they need adjustments, so fi nding a good dealer is important,” she noted.

“Many of the local sales people love teaching and talk-ing to customers. You should fi nd someone who will work with all skill levels. Finding a mentor is also a good idea. We learn from our mistakes and by sharing with others.”

Pat’s family and friends are lucky this “sewing artist” likes to share her beautiful hand-made items when it’s gift-giving time. ■

hen people decide to build a new home and move instead of purchasing a resale or remodeling their present house, the reasons are varied. In the case of Cathy and Richard Trampe, it was a carefully thought out process that started several

years before the fi rst brick was laid.“We knew what we wanted. We had been in our house in

Metropolis for 29 years. Our two children were raised there and both of our careers in education started and ended in that area. Richard had retired and I was approaching retire-ment, too,” Cathy explained.

For several years, they saved magazine clippings of rooms, furniture, fi xtures, and styles they liked. Then they started examining house plans that would fi t their needs. “I had

folders for each room,” Cathy said, and their interior designer, John Gust, confi rms.

“They had been collecting things for a long time, and they knew for the most part what they liked and disliked,” he said. “They had started the inspiration folder quite some time before they actually started the building process. It was so helpful to be able to browse through them.”

Moving across the river to Paducah was not a major relocation decision, but the building process was a new experience for the Trampes. They wanted to be on or near the golf course at the Country Club of Pa-ducah where veteran golfer Richard spends lots of time since his retirement. While pre-viewing condos and homes for sale, they saw an ideal lot on Troon Road and bought it then, even though they had decided to wait until Cathy retired before moving.

“We wanted the house to be all on one fl oor, looking toward being older. We didn’t want a really large home” she noted. After looking at dozens of fl oor plans, they fi nally decided to take a William Poole Southern Living plan and rework it themselves.

“I literally merged the Poole plan with my own sketches, gave them to John Gust and he reworked the design for the space we had. “He was a good listener and prob-lem solver.”

“In their new home, we eliminated the bays at the rear of the house and replaced them with squared, open gables to allow for more usable space in the breakfast room, as well as the master bedroom sit-ting alcove,” Gust noted.

“This also gave us an opportunity to design a larger outdoor living space and, I believe, a better looking rear elevation of the home. Inside, we added a wall and adjust-ed some of the doorways to allow for some furnishings and art the Trampes have. This also gave us a chance to execute the inte-rior trim concepts, specifi cally the wainscot-ing and picture frame moldings, more accu-rately with symmetry in mind,” Gust said.

Posh May/June 41

Page 42: Cozy - Amazon Web Servicesmatchbin-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/public/sites/1140/assets/73NH… · Pat Brockenborough Vicki Hunkler Advertising Director Carolyn Raney craney@paducahsun.com

Gust is a fan of good windows, specifi cally ones with exterior mullions. “The added shadow lines can really make the biggest difference,” he explained.

Cathy said they had a “wonderful carpenter” who did all the built-ins and mantel in the living room. “I love the molding,” she emphasized and the designer mentioned that lots of sketching of the molding applications, bookshelves, cabinetry, doorways, and mantle was well worth the effort to get the Trampes’ desired effect.

“I can sometimes sketch out a design thought on site in a lot less time than it can take to verbalize a vision to a builder or homeowner,” he said. This avoids ideas being “lost in translation.”

(Marcus Burnett was the builder and a 19-year-old Amish man did the cabinetry work from a photo the Trampes had in their folder.)

“We ended up with a house about the size of a condo,” Richard commented on the 2500-square-foot

Page 43: Cozy - Amazon Web Servicesmatchbin-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/public/sites/1140/assets/73NH… · Pat Brockenborough Vicki Hunkler Advertising Director Carolyn Raney craney@paducahsun.com

plan that includes three bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a spacious open kitchen with breakfast area, a formal living room and separate dining room, and a family room where the Trampes can enjoy quiet time or the fl at-screen TV housed in the beautiful cherry custom built-ins.

Echoing their designer’s thoughts on the house, Richard and Cathy agree that the fi nished product is all about the details—lighting fi xtures, moldings, truly custom built-ins, curved windows and special win-dow treatments, walnut stained oak fl oors, lamps over the mantel, tiles for the kitchen and baths, marble around the fi replace, and certainly the steam shower.

“This is a feature I really like! It’s wonderful at the end of the day to have the steam shower,” Richard emphasized. He had seen a similar unit at his friend Terry West’s lake house and wanted to incorporate one into this fl oor plan.

A beautifully crafted stained glass window in the master bath window was made by Paducah artist Wanda Sanders in the fl eur de lis motif. This offers needed privacy as well as a touch of color over the soaking tub.

The home’s exterior is brick, but not what the Trampes originally chose. “We thought we wanted slurry on the brick, but decided against it once it was on the chimney. The plan actually called for drivet and stone,” according to Cathy.

The back exterior facing the golf course features an eye-catching pergola and terrace with wide stairs going down to the yard—something Rich-ard wanted and designed with Gust’s help after

The Trampes have a strong sense of personal style. Nothing seems contrived. They’ve been gathering things they love ... it was a lot of fun putting it all together.
