When asking David Bachmann of Pinehurst farm of Wisconsin,

“What was the best cow you ever bought?” he had to think awhile.

Great Homebred herds come from great foundation purchases. With David’s involvement in the sales business and showing, he had many opportunities to view and evaluate some of the elite cows of the breed. However with success and popularity of these cattle don’t come without a price.

It is a lot more fun and challenging to find the hot show cow or brood cow before the world knows about them. David had the ability to do that and had a network of good cowmen spanning the country to assist him. Three legendary men that come to mind were Nelson Rehder, Henry”Sonny” Bartel and Darrel Pidgeon.

While narrowing the best cow list down it came to the two Excellent 97 point cows discovered and developed in David’s Pinehurst herd.

The first 97 was Dolvic Fury Bubaleah the Reserve All American Aged Cow in 1973. Bubaleah was found while David and Sonny and Greg Bovre were selecting for the Midwest Medalist Sale in the herd of James Ray of Roberts, Wisconsin. Sonny spotted the maternal sister to Bubaleah (Sired by Midwest bull, now CRI) and really liked her. David and Greg that night went to Ray’s and not only liked the cow but also found her maternal sister by Fury who was a first calf three year old. Good produces were hard to find so they bought the pair. Unfortunately Bubaleah’s sister never became a show cow but Bubaleah won the aged cow class at World Dairy Expo in 1973.

Her real impact at Pinehurst came from her Prestige of Lakehurst son Pinehurst Copyright who sired three All-American Get of Sire’s and two Honorable Mention Gets and was the Premier Sire at Madison in 1980.

The second cow was Jan-Com Fond Matt Matilda Ex-97 5E Gold Medal Dam, Jr. All-American Aged Cow 1977 and a 5 time show winner, Gold Medal Dams and many Excellent

tell me about the

cows with superior production records and great lifetime totals.

David Bachmann first saw the Illinois bred Jan-Com Fond Matt Matilda at the World Dairy Expo in 1974. An immature four year old, she placed out of the top ten but left an impression. At that time Pinehurst was collecting Fond Matts and she had the look of a late bloomer. The next spring Darrell Pidgeon was traveling through Texas and stopped in the Steinberger herd, where Matilda was living and was able to acquire her for Pinehurst. David Jr., David’s son, was starting to get interested in the cow business so David put her in his name.

David Jr. showed her as a 4-H project and she was named the Jr. All-American Aged Cow in 1977. Matilda was a five time national show winner and made a high record of 10-10 3X 35,631M 3.9F 1391F and was named a Gold Medal Dam. She was the dam of an All-American daughter, Pinehurst Precious 4E-EX-95, and an All-American Son, Pinehurst Blueprint EX-95. Her family has now reached ten generations of Excellents. These generations include many All-Americans, red & white and black & white, national show winners, Gold Medal Dams and many Excellent cows with superior records and great lifetime totals.

aurthor’s Note: Matilda, I believe, improved every year of her life until about 12 and had a great personality.

Some are more interesting than others. Jess found her

way to the winner’s circle several times this past summer and her note-worthy winnings piqued my interest. If a cow can do that much winning and be “on” that many times within a short period of time, I knew there had to be a story in there some-where….and there was.

Sunrose Jess, a 5 year old Advent daughter, bred and owned by Bruce Gingerich of Millersburg, Indiana took the show ring by storm. In June, in Richmond, Indiana at the Indiana State Holstein show she was named Senior Champion and Grand Champion.

In August she loaded up for another round of shows. When Bruce led her into the ring at the In-diana State Fair Holstein show, held in Indianapolis, he led her out as the Grand Champion. A couple of days later, she was crowned Supreme Champion of the Indiana State Fair.

Sunrose Jess left Indy and headed south to Louis-ville, Kentucky for the Kentucky State Fair. Keep-ing a perfect record on her summer tour, she was tapped for Grand Champion and went on to win Supreme Champion.

While she has swept up a pile of purple ribbons this summer, her path to perfection was not always a walk in the park.

Jess began her tanbark career as the 4-H project of Gingerich’s step daughter. She was an “off-aged” calf, Gingerich explained, “I gave her an off age calf for the same reason I gave my boys off aged calves to start with; to teach them how to be good losers, then we’ll try to teach them how to be good

winners. But as a calf she accidentally turned out to be Junior Champion at her first show.”

A few months later, Gingerich took her to the biggest dairy show on earth, World Dairy Expo. “She stood second from the bottom and I told everyone I just brought her so she would know her way around expo when she was older and it mattered,” he said with a smile.

Jess just got better with age standing third to fifth place as a yearling and as a two year old. She stood second and was Reserve All-Indiana and Honorable Mention Intermedi-ate Champion as a three year old and Grand Champion at their district Holstein show as a three year old.

The obstacles along the way have made Jess more than just a milk cow. When she calved as a two year old, Ginger-ich had been gone for a few days and when he got home she was three days fresh with frost bite on her right front teat that turned completely black with black streaks run-ning up her udder floor. A call to the vet found chickweed salve to be the udder saving solution, in addition to milking that quarter by hand for the next three months.

The next year, just about the time Gingrich thought Jess would peak in her show career, she lost a calf and her 9 month lacta-tion turned into 22 months and hopes of a great show career were delayed one more year. Jess calved in January 2013 and Gingerich was “getting his psych on” to take her to the New York Spring Carousel in Syracuse in April. Two weeks before the show Gingerich said, “the floor fell out.”

“We trimmed her feet and a few days later she started sliding…FAST. Dr. Robert Zell finally determined she must have had a touch of hardware that got stirred up when the sling went under her at hoof trimming time. But by the time we got ready to leave for New York, she was on the truck and ready to show.” Her New York Spring Carousel debut found her first in the five year old class until the last minute when the judge Michael Heath slipped her into second place.

Classification day in June found Jess sick with the first case of coliform mastitis on the farm in 12 years. Ginger-ich said, “She scored Excellent 94 one day, had a blown quarter the next and zero kidney function the next day. She went down and was unable to get up. Four days later she had 92 pounds for the tester. We bred her the next day and she’s pregnant.”

He continued, “The one thing I want to say about this cow, that I want everyone to know about her is that she has the heart of a champion. She makes Seabiscuit look like a no talent wimp.”

As she stood in the string at the Indiana State Fair, Jess had several admirers but no one summed up her tenacity and superiority quite like fellow Holstein breeder Brian Tu-man of Minnesota when he told Gingerich, “Look at her face and her eyes, that cow is one chromosome away from reading, writing and arithmetic.”

Sunrose Jess is not the only great one in the family. She comes from a long line of hearty cows, Gingerich ex-plained, “I purchased her 3rd dam from Mike Oesch (of Indiana). She was a Comestar Leader x VG 87 Ned Boy x VG Bell x EX Char Sam Elevation Pabst.” He continued, “The Pasbst went back to a few cows that Mike had pur-chase when London Dairy sold out in Michigan, and when I was in high school Dr. Webb used to always come to our place and talk about the Pabst, so I had been following them for a long time.”

Gingerich then bred the Leader to Ricecrest Marshall, trying to come up with something the AI industry may be interested in and came up with Sunrose Jaila, who was VG with several records over 40,000 and her top at 49,200.

Jaila’s first daughter was Sunrose Jenna EX 94, by Morty, who has 150,000 out in three lactations. Her second daughter was Sunrose Jenny EX, by Hi Metro, who won the four year old class at Indiana State Fair in 2009.

Jess was Jenny’s only daughter. Jenna had a son, Sunrose Jake, that we, and some neighbors, used. He sired Look-

well Brooke who won a lot in Indiana and Kentucky and was nominated Junior All American Senior Yearling in 2012. All of Jakes daughters that have been scored are VG as 2 year olds.

Jess has a Braxton daughter, Jalyssa, who was Junior Champion at the Indiana state Show in 2012 and a Janu-ary 2013 daughter by Jake, Gingerich explains, “She the result of a miscarriage and throwing five straws of her cousin at her just to get her pregnant—but she’s a great calf.”

Did he think she would be this great? Gingerich an-swered, “I will admit I always had a hunch with her.....you just watch her and she seems to have “it”....it is all her for sure. As a young cow, she just didn’t have enough volume in the udder to run with the big dogs, but that’s a problem I can live with.”

Gingerich admits he has no clue on where Jess will go from here, he commented, “It doesn’t matter what show we are going to--county fair or expo, we always approach every show day with the same motto. Let’s try to land something in the top 5......after that it’s just more fun”

Gingerich concluded, “All I know for sure about Jess and the rest of that cow family is that if they were all like these girls, milking cows would never seem like work.”

Sunrose Jess will parade through one more show ring this year as she takes a stroll across the colored shavings at the “Big Dance” at World Dairy Expo.

Sunrose Jess Picked Grand – Judge Nathan Thomas of Ohio tapped Sunrose Jess as Grand Champion at the Indiana State Holstein Show in Richmond, in June.

Mark Rueth grew up on a farm in Jefferson, Wisconsin milking

grade cows with his father. He started showing grade calves at the county fair and after a disappointing fair, Mark’s Dad, a good cowman, bought Mark his first registered calf.

Unfortunately the Rueths, like many of us, bought their first animals on a limited budget and making their purchases from the animals at the end of the sale. Mark’s mentor—his dad, told Mark that instead of buying all these bargains maybe he should invest in a good one. Looking back at Mark’s track record I think he took his father’s advice to heart.

Mark Rueth became a fitter, working sales, shows and clipping for classifications- providing a great education. Fitting took him around the country and the world and exposed him to some great cowmen making many lifelong friends. Among them was Mark Van Mersbergen of Markwell Farm in Washington.

Mark was preparing the consignments at the Great Northern Sales Arena in Fond de Lac, Wisconsin when he first saw Stookey Elm Park Blackrose. She checked all the boxes on what Mark was looking for in a big time purchase. She had a great frame, carried the red factor and was sired by the popular bull, Blackstar. This was not his first exposure to the Blackrose family as he had clipped and admired her dam “Speckles” while clipping for Louis Prange.“Speckles”,

By Ron Schaap

BlaCkroSETHE BLOOD OF

a Triple Threat had the biggest head Mark had ever seen and had the look of a brood cow.

Before the sale Mark Rueth called Mark Van Mersbergen and told him about a nice young Calypso daughter that might interest him. Van Mersbergen asked Mark what else looked good, so Mark told him about Blackrose. Markwell gave him a bid on the Calypso but said they were even more interested in the Blackstar heifer. The Calypso brought $2450 and sold to Gil-Tex of California, where she went on to be the All-California two year old. Mark was disappointed he lost out on her but then set his sights on Blackrose.

She came in the sale ring and the bidding began. Everything came to a halt at $4,500 and Mark was confident Blackrose would go home with him, but then somebody new jumped in and ran her to $5,400 where she was struck off to Rueth & Markwell.

Mark started working for Bob Schauf ’s Indianhead Holsteins in Barron, Wisconsin and got the “OK” to house Blackrose there. Bob Schauf knowing a good one himself talked Mark into selling him a one-third interest. It was at Indianhead that she spent the rest of her life.

Elm Park Stookey Blackrose wound up EX-96 3E Gold Medal Dam, Dam of Merit, two time All-American and All-Canadian and the ALL-TIME All-American Junior 2 & 3 year old. She made a record of 42,230M 4.6F 1939F 3.4P 1432P. She has produced 21 Excellent and 18 Very Good progeny.

Mark later learned of the contending bidder at the sale. She would have had her tail docked lived in cramped small stalls and in all likelihood would not have had the impact on the breed that she has today. As you watch the Red & White show at World Dairy Expo realize that a high percentage of the animals in the show ring carry the blood of Blackrose.

Clark Vilter admits that he was not the first to spot the potential of

Guernsey great Westlynn Tom Dee. Randy Kortus was judging a show in Washington and marveled at the winning 2 year old.

That was a young “Tom Dee.” Randy Kortus contacted then fitter, Mark Rueth and together they purchased the outstanding young Guernsey. “Tom Dee” made her way out to Madison that fall and when Clark saw her for the first time he was impressed with her balance, great udder and feet and legs. Deciding it was more enjoyable to own her than to look up at her, Clark became a partner with Randy and Mark. Eventually purchasing the whole cow.

How did that work out?

Well not too bad! “Tom Dee classified Excellent 96, made a high record of 26,540M 4.8F 1284F 3.6P 961P and also had a most distinguished show career as a four time World Dairy Expo Grand Champion!!

But “Tom Dee” didn’t stop there. She turned into perhaps the Greatest Guernsey Brood Cow with twelve Excellent daughters and sixteen national show winning maternal offspring. Among her daughters was Four Winds Dee Destiny EX-93 All-American who was the dam of Four Winds Destiny Child, Excellent-95 with over 28,000 pounds of 4.5F milk, two time Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo , five time All-American and the best cow Clark Vilter ever bred.

“Tom Dee” helped Clark and Joy Vilter achieve the Guernsey Master Breeder Award and propelled Clark into being included in the Klussendorf Award club. It shows what one great purchase can do for a breeding program.
